The term "White Lightning" - and the song - is about corn liquor, distilled in some clandestine location (in this case, "in North Carolina, way back in the hills"), commonly referred to as "moonshine".
Yep my grandpappy could cook😂
Wow walked through this world with me that's a great George Johnson walk walk through this world❤❤
I knew the guy who is considered the most famous of the "moonshiners", Popcorn Sutton. Who practiced his craft in the mountains around Maggie Valley, NC.
@@timhouston3371 i always loved the look of that Ford model T pickup he would drive around in.
Or that Good Ol' Mountain Dew. George probably drank a lot of it!
George recognized a catchy hook when he heard one! You're almost breaking into the Pulp Fiction dance. Love it!
This song was written and originally released by JP "Big Bopper" Richardson Jr... Who famously died on February 3, 1959 in a plane crash, along with Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens , and pilot Roger Peterson... The "Day the Music Died" was an event that was later immortalized by Don McLean's song, "American Pie"... The event was already etched in American history by those who remembered the headlines, but "American Pie" made sure future generations never forgot...
George came along later and made a hit out of it...
Yep.. outta my town of Clear Lake IA!!
George released the record 6 days after the fatal plane crash on Feb 9 1959. It became George's first #1.
@@trentupchurch5414 Thanks for that info... I knew it was released later that year, but I didn't realize it was THAT close to the crash...Seems that "Bopper" may have seen/heard the "Possum" coming... Nice way to help his family financially... Especially since JP, like Buddy, left an expecting wife behind... Too bad Buddy's baby didn't make it...
@J S I've thought about his kid might have been another Hank Jr or even if that plane hadn't crashed Waylon Jennings might not be the superstar that he become. Truth is there was so much musical talent back then and steadily getting better. Looking back at the decline over the last few decades has me doing a lot of what ifs
A great artist who was known for sound affects in his songs is Roger Miller. Treat yourself to "Do-Wacka-Do", "King of The Road" or "Chug a Lug". He has too many great songs for me to list.
"Dang Me" is another good one.
G-Men, T-Men Revenuers too looking for the place where he made his brew! Such a great chorus line! I love it when he does the drunk hiccup, sadly he didn’t do it in this version.
George is backed on this video by Johnny Cash's band The Tennessee Three along with Gordon Terry playing lead guitar.
Absolutely love your reactions, and you are spot on with recognizing the talent ole George had,he could do a lot with his voice that others couldn’t.
thank you so much!!
White Lightning is Moonshine
Mountain dew is also moonshine.
And both are homemade liquor.
It fills my heart with joy that you finally did this. And the great reaction and fun as always. And yeah white lightning refers to having a still out in the woods and making your own moonshine during Prohibition.
A fun reaction. After the comment about liking sound effects in songs, I'm going to suggest reacting to Roger Miller. He did some great light hearted songs. My suggestions would be:
Dang Me
Chug A Lug
For more serious songs by Roger:
Husbands and Wives
Little Green Apples
You need to listen to George jones & vestal Goodman singing o come angel band…… country gospel at its best. ❤
You can really see why he was given the name Possum in this early version. That nickname followed throughout his life.
White Lightning is a corn liquor known also as Moonshine. There are of course all flavors now but back in those days they mainly made White Lightning aka (Mountain Dew). It's illegal liquor which is why it says in the song that all the people were looking for where he made his brew.
You’re a sweetheart. Love your reactions 🌹
I love the performances of this song where he does the hiccups. He does it so well. Lol
I prefer tge live version from the navy hoedown, I think '62. It is on youtube, he really gets it!
This is cool beans sweety 😊
The harmony is George Riddle. I dated his niece. They called them the two Georges. Riddle was an excellent song writer and singer. One of like 12 kids. The family is very musically inclined. Riddle was Jones's person that tried to keep him from drinking. That's why you hear no show with Jones. If you ever read this. You can sing. One of the list favorites is rissi Palmer
Another fun little ditty George did back in the old days was "Nothing Ever Hurt Me"
George Jones He stop loving her today a must hear song
Written and Recorded by JP . Richardson. Better known as the Big Bopper.. Who passed away in a plane crash Feb 3 1959 along with Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. George Jones Recorded and had a hit with the song in April of the same yr...both versions are awesome...
Yup moonlight chemistry lol my old family business 😂
One of his best vocal performances can be found in his song Grand Tour. I promise it wont disappoint.
No, you are pretty right on with your reactions. If you're not familiar with a term, no biggie! White lightning is moonshine! I love and miss the older, light hearted music, we don't see it anymore, glad you're checking it out!
George Jones ‘The Possum’ singing about that shine!
Rock a billy at its finest. The 50s' & 60's had the best music EVER,
White Lightning & Moon Shine are home distilled, unaged whiskey.
thank you for sharing, I did not know that!
Girl you're beautiful. Keep it up.
Yeah! :)
Great reaction again! :)
Rumor says, it took about 70 takes to record that song, because Gorge was so drunk.
In the final take there is still a mistake ("He took one sprrrlug, and he drank it right down"), but they let it in there, and George sang that third verse for the next 50 years like that! :)
I always heard it as, "He took one _sir-slug,_ and he drank it right down."
Never knew it was a mistake.
George is sooo great but I''m in love with Britt!!!!
Take a swig white lightning and you’re gonna make some interesting sounds too. Love your reactions.
White Lightning was written by The Big Bopper and given to George Jones, no charge or strings attached.
Awesome reaction👍 this was his very first #1 single in 1959, “ walk through this world with me” is one of them ❤️👍
White lightning is liquor, corn or whatever it is distilled from. The next step to make it into whiskey or Bourbon would be to age it, in the case of Jack Daniels, and some others is storing it for years in charred oak barrels. The"possum" George Jones did good with this song, but I also like the original version by the man that wrote it, J P Richardson "The Big Bopper" who died in the plane crash that also took Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly.
Fun fact: Moonshiners making their cars fast to outrun police, is where NASCAR was born.
This one is fun!!
Love the shine! East Kentucky in the house!
haha welcome!
That was great!
Classic good song
One of my favorite songs ever by George, and one I was known for back in 4th or 5th grade, after singing it in the school talent show. There is now way anyone would be allowed to do this song in grade school today, but in the late 70's life was a lot different. White lightening better known as Moonshine also referred to in the song as Mountain Dew, pure corn whiskey.
About the same age, I remember singing Three Dog Nights "Joy to the World".
You'd really enjoy Roy Clark singing Folsom Blues also. The black and white version is the best I've seen on RUclips.
She knows her stuff.
Amazing Ive been spamming your reacts amazing channel , Joe diffie's cover at his birthday celebration is a must
Fun song , I like it. White Lightning is illegal brewing whiskey.
Love You Britt!
For future reference, it is pronounced Nye-eev-IT-taiy.(naïveté)
Keep up the great work!
Moonshine, Mountain Dew, White Lightning, corn liquid, same thing, homemade alcohol
I know this comment is a bit late but I love the reviews. The haircut he has in this performance is also called a "flat top". It was a popular haircut in the 50's and 60's. My dad used to have hair cut like that back then.
And he was a Marine.
I recommend Listening to George Jones ol red
Another good song about stump water (moonshine) is Copperhead road by Steve Earl.
Think Everclear... White Lightning was home made alcohol, which was a substitute to replace the newly banned commercially made alcohol at the beginning of Prohibition... There was a Constitutional amendment passed that banned the production, importation, sale and even possession of any alcoholic beverages. Look up "Prohibition" and you'll get all the background you could ever read in your lifetime.
Good old rock-a-Billy
White lightening means - moonshine
Thanks!
Fun fact the guy on harmony was Jonny Paycheck. Go check out old violin.
I love this reaction! Your reaction is so fun and heart warming… perfect reaction to a song intended to be fun and playful.
And if you would like to watch a song to make chills run up your spine, look up Willy Nelson and Loretta Lynn's "Lay Me Down." Good one!
i think youll find the sound effects came from those who drinking the moonshine................its pretty strong
The story is that George showed up at the studio drunk to record this song and after 82 takes everyone wanted to kill George. So, the producer sent everyone home and went with the 2nd or 3rd take.
👍👍
Moonshine!
You may also hear Mountain Dew used in the same context, especially in Irish folk songs, pre-dating the use as a soda brand.
Really miss your cute natural hair....you are so pretty with short hair....coming from a hairstylist point of view....✂✂😍😍
Well if you like the “animated sound effects” then you MUST check out Roger Miller! You won’t be disappointed! 🤣
Another song when he was younger The window up above. Serious song about cheating
So fun... love it!
Enjoyed your reaction. If you haven’t already react to his song “Who’s gonna gill their shoes “ thanks. God Bless!!
Fill sorry! Lol
She did it about 3 weeks ago (As of this posting)... Enjoy...
thank you so much! I will keep it in mind!
Believe me, home brewed moonshine is not the same as store bought 😲 But if you're going to try it. You should start with store bought. There are still people hiding out and making it.
This is my Mother's favorite singer I have had to listen to him since the 1970s! and still do to this don't
Whiskey made from a still
You should look up
"Finally Friday" remix by George. The radio station plays it every morning going to work, and every afternoon on the way home.
HILARIOUS!
Look up "Tear Me Out of the Picture" by George Jones
I know Roger Miller has a song with roughly the same beat, Who Shot Sam. Which is oddly one of my favorites. They co-wrote a song that Alan Jackson had a hit with many years later, Tall Tall Trees. And to answer your White Lightning question, it's Moonshine.
George also recorded "Who shot Sam"... Maybe under the alias "Jumper Jones".
White lightning is commonly referred to as MOONSHINE, rot gut or corn liquor
Perfect a cappella harmonization: Voctave's *Disney Princess Medley.* Please!
Try the blackberry smoke cover of this song 🎸
❤❤❤
Britt if you had some homemade white lighting/ moonshine you might hit the ground moaning like the city boy
home made whiskey also called moon shine
Great reaction! Please react to wild irish rose!
Also known as moonshine!!
The "White Lightning" part sounds like Vince McMahon lol.
I can't remember any other reactor checking out this song! Thank you!
Since you like story songs you should listen to Red Sovign, songs "Phantom 309" or "Teddy Bear".
It means moonshine sweetheart. Lol
This funny song is about the crystal meth of its day, very popular in the hills. White Lightning can be 150 proof and it is chugged straight. So it's actually kind of sick since the hillbilly who cooks up the stuff is feeding it to his little boy. Talk about breaking bad! The guy who wrote it was DJ J.P. Richardson, the Big Bopper. Richardson died in a plane crash with rock 'n' roll star Buddy Holly shortly after writing this song for George Jones.
Try listening to Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow doing "Pictures". Great listen!
I like the version where he pops his cheek like a cork.
White Lightning is moonshine. Absolutely love to your reactions. You should check out The Grand Tour by George Jones. You should also check out a couple of comedians. Don Rickles and Norm Macdonald.
Rocky Top is another song about corn liquor
Hey Britt, like redtick said white lighting is moonshine made back in the hills out of reach of the law if possible one of the strongest drinks of liquor you'll they try to calm it down to 100' proof but back then it was a pretty strong drink, George, as usual was George, he made great music although his career I would like to request a song by Vince Gill called "THE STRINGS THAT TIE YOU DOWN" thanks for the George Jones, song it was great
Check out the early live version of too much water and she thinks I still care.
George didn't write this song -- J.P. Richardson wrote it and recorded it as The Big Bopper -- but he did write songs early in his career.
George Jones at this age reminds me of how Jim Carey looked on the movie Me,myself, and Irene
It's whiskey called White lightning
phonetically nigh-eve-a-tay'...
moonshine.. home brew liquor.. is clear, many flavors can be brew from many grains, vegayables, fruits etc....known as white lightning, mountain dew, hooch, home brew, shine, mulekick etc..,
moonshine is what he singing about
Well,, to be honest honey, makin a stil in a dry County was against the law and this is what that song is about, and I'm sure you've found all of this out. If not, watch Andy Of Mayberry....hahahahahaaa!
Anyways love your reactions to these Country fellows from that time period.
Things were so different back then....
i also recommend the original version by j.p richardson {the big bopper}
moon shine
Moon-Shine
A good song for you to listen to is The Hanging Tree by Marty Robbins.
Jerry Reed does good sounds, and a great story teller.
