- We spend the weekend at Knight's Key Campground, in Marathon Florida. While it was our intention to hike or bike the Seven Mile Bridge, we also enjoy the campground, our inflatable boat, and the local cuisine. By the way the sunsets are also amazing. We are stoked to be here, as we usually are when we travel to the Florida Keys.

Marathon is a relatively large city located in the middle Florida Keys, just before the Seven Mile Bridge. It is composed of several islands, none of which is called Marathon oddly enough. The name probably comes from an expression used by railroad workers during the construction of the Overseas Railway, conveying that the fast pace work felt like running a marathon. That’s what they named the train station, and the rest is history.
We spent a weekend there recently, at Knights Key Campground, at the island just before the Seven Mile Bridge. It is a beautiful tropical paradise. $68 per night in the off-season will buy you a harbor site with your own dock. We wanted to use the inflatable boat so that’s what we got, only to find out it was only convenient to launch it during high tide, which is what we did. One of the best beaches in the Keys, which is not saying much, is nearby. It is called Sombrero Beach, named after its namesake reef, former key, and lighthouse nearby. We spent the weekend enjoying the outdoors, eating the local seafood, and relaxing at the many tiki bars in the area.
It was my intention to bike the old Seven Mile Bridge, but the National Park Service has decided to close it down, in a renovation project that could last years. At least we got to walk on it a few years ago, and to be fair, it was in pretty bad shape. It had already been closed to vehicular traffic, and in recent years it had become a popular spot for biking and jogging.
We are planning to go back in the winter, if we can find a vacancy, in order to enjoy the high season, when the tiki bar by the beach is open and the park is full of snowbirds. It will be interesting to see the seasonal differences.

I grew up going to that campground. Fishing and camping with my family are some of the best memories I have,I am truly heartbroken at the fact that it doesn’t exist anymore.
I've been there many times, in my younger days, with my Dad. Watching your video, brought a slue of memories, pouring back to me...especially seeing the end of the old 7-mile bridge, with the old railroad tracks as banister blockers. And the Drone footage was Excellent. The editing was perfect! You've made an old man's day! I intend to forward this to my entire contact list! This is the best half hour I've spent in years! Ha, ha, we went down to Marathon after Irma went through and found ourselves in the middle of the 7 mile bridge with the low fuel light on and not knowing if there would be an open fuel station soon after the bridge. We love these Keys videos Robert. Thank you.

On Marathon key ..back in 1982., spent christmas on Marathon..... Great little efficiency with bedroom...private..loved staying there!!! Was able to snorkle behind the place in channel .....LOVED THIS PLACE and cant remember the name...........

Ah so very nice. Had to watch the bike riding with one eye for awhile but it's so beautiful. I learnt if I spray my shovel with Pam the snow just slides right off. Happy trails guys !!

I was so hoping to see a video of your riding on the old bridge. I love to bike and enjoy watching for videos of rides off the streets, along paved trails, especially ones near here in south Texas. The bridge sounded an ideal place to ride. I hope you bring your bike and try again when the construction is finished. The views will be awesome!

It is Hot in August. Around Xmas the camp sites are more booked but you don't hear any loud music, the Tiki bar is 100% open, and people are from all over and very, very, very nice...plus the cafe is open too for meals ( next to the fish cutting station).
What is real fun is for $25 take the starfish snorkel tour out to the reef....so worth it!!!

I currently live in Alaska and it’s absolutely gorgeous in the summer, but the winters are too long (at least 6 months). I’m moving to Florida to live 9 months per year, the other 3 months, I’ll stay in Alaska and fish for salmon.

Enjoyed the video, my husband and I were there last week. First time ever in the keys. We took the ferry boat over to Pigeon Key island, along with eight others, and that was a good decision. Beautiful place, sad that folks can no longer bike over to it.

Hi Robert, great video. It helped us with the decision to make the drive from Canada to this Campground this March. Really sorry to hear it is closing soon, what a great location. oh man i was hoping that you would drive on the 7 mile bridge
Robert, I rode my bike on the old bridge to Pigeon Key. No one told me that the pavement was busted up. I rode all the way out there and back, but it was a rough ride. I also drank about two liters of water; there and back. It's really pretty out there, though.
Great video, love the ride, never get tired of it... you forgot the Cuban coffee though ;)
Oh, but we made some in the camper... forgot to shoot it.
The Island Fish Co was delicious. Had the shrimp scampi.
The campground is now Isla Bella Beach resort. Stayed 11/19 and it
is very nice but "beach resort"? Tiny beach but a beautiful resort.

I always play my music loud like that! but I am considerate of my surroundings and the people near me. It would be like smoking a cig and blowing it in someones face.
If I was that close to Key West I would have gone there. I was there 14 years ago for 3 days. Stayed at the Palms Inn and it was really nice for $130.00 a night.
I go to Key west at least once a year. It is my happy place

Hey Traveling Robert. I recently started watching your videos and I love them. Have you ever been to my beautiful state of New Hampshire? I would love to see a video from here. You should come late summer or early fall (great foliage). It's very cold here from late fall to late spring.

Love Marathon. We've been going to The Hawks Nest on Knights Key for over 40 years and it never gets old. Watching your film made me sad to know the area was so devastated by Irma. We won't be able to come this year, but hopefully everything will back to normal next year.

Hi Robert. I've just found your channel, I enjoyed your video and commentary. I spent my 2015 holidays on Florida, Including 3 nights on Marathon Island, I love that place as nothing else on this planet.
Just found your channel, loving the commentary and music. Went to Marathon last summer for ten days and loved it ❤❤❤ went to many of the same places. We drove from Houston to The Keys pulling our boat. Wish we could bring RV and boat 😫
