I think we can all agree that the Internet has an intense, borderline obsessive, appreciation for cats. With felines as its spirit animal, the internet can even seem cat-like in personality. Where does all this kitteh love come from? Humans made the internet, and humans have had an affinity for cats for centuries. But can we make the jump from "the internet loves cats" to "the internet IS cats"? Watch the episode and find out!

People = the internet. Cats = the internet. Therefore, people = cats.
Cats are photogenic. Almost without exception. Their symmetry and graceful movement. And so many of them have that duality of maintaining a cool dignity while being complete clowns at other times. Dogs mostly want to play and take part in a pack. Dignity isn't really one of their things. I nevertheless consider myself more of a dog person than a cat person.
Have you noticed how many photo's there are of cats looking at laptop screens....

I love both cats and dogs. I love dogs because most of them have an undying loyalty to their humans, or an intelligence to figure out problems in amusing ways.
I like cats because they are unpredictable. They have their own language, really. All those complicated hissed, purrs, rumbles, tail-twitches. They aren't tame like the dogs are. It's like having a snow leopard stalking through your house... exept much smaller and causes a little less damage. They hunt, yes, and things can get messy, they are independent, disloyal and sly. But this is what makes them so facinating to watch. Like dogs, no two cats are the same. Some are lazy. Some are curious. Some are playful. Some are aggressive. Some are sly.
But whatever the cat or the dog, I love them both.

it's probably been said already, but toxoplasmosis is an infection by a protozoan not a virus. As an ER nurse I read an interesting study about motorcycle deaths and it was found that a majority of these risk takers had lesions in their brains related to toxoplasmosis. I would love to see a study done on fail blog victims.

I had a realization the other day and it explains the popularity of both cats and hats. Every person on the internet at one point in their childhood read the Cat in the Hat and that's why both are so popular.

I can agree with that toxoplasmosis and totemism thing, but I don't agree that "cat is the internet because it's part of humans, but bacetria are not."
It's like saying dogs are the friendship because they say that "dogs are the best man's friend". I agree it became a sort of totem, but not that it's deep in our mentality or biology.
In all honestly I think that the Internet loves cats so much because, they are, well cute. They're curious, fun-loving, lazy animals, which makes us love them even more, so to say.
I think a big reason there are so many cats on the internet is because it tends to be introverts who spend a lot of time on the web, and introverts tend to prefer cats to dogs because they fit into the more low-key introvert lifestyle. Just a thought, I have no data to back it up. Very interesting video, thanks.

I think the reason why people on the internet love cats as much as they do is because cats represent that spirit of introversion combined with the need for human compassion that is found quite regularly with people who spend an extended amount of time on the internet. Dogs are much more eager-to-please, which may alienate the sort of people who would much rather sit at a pc than do something "worthwhle" with their lives (myself included). Plus cats are suuuuper adorable >.
Watched this video around 5 times, enjoyed it. Watched the Ignite talk and then this, Ignite talk contextualises so much of the video.

We can relate to cats in many ways. They're loners, can be somewhat cruel, very lazy, think they're better than everyone. But they can be very affectionate, silly, and clever. You can pretty much say that almost everyone can be compared to a cat.

I find it interesting how the idea of cats has evolved through the ages. I mean they have been seen as gods, witchcraft, bad luck, and now as a supposed mascot or totem of the Internet.
You know when someone's using insane troll logic, and you're just nodding along like, "yeah, that totally makes sense"...

I typed 'Cats' into RUclips I got about 13,900,000 results. Fewer than I was excepting.
I had to watch the video twice because the first time through I spent the entire time just looking at the cat pictures.
Cats are the literal embodiment of the Internet. It disgusts us, fascinates us, makes us feel good, and teaches us about ourself. It has claws and delicate little paws that looks weird but cute. Sound familiar?

I think the reason why people love cats so much is because of their actions. Let's face it, cats do some funny stuff sometimes. However, those funny stuff only happens once in awhile, and that's only when you are looking. When ever the internet came around, people could show what funny things that their cat just did. And because cats do funny things, many other people wanted to show their cat doing funny stuff. Not to mention the expressions that cats can and do make.
Jump forward a few years, and here we are with who knows how many cats pictures, videos, and cat based memes, all because cats rarely do funny stuff.

A cat has the freedom to do what it wants, choose with whom it will socialize, choose who it will like or love, and then sit back and be practically served by a human being with food, protection, entertainment, and love. As an internet user, I can roam the internet as I please, choose with whom I will be Facebook friends, choose who I will follow on Twitter, and then sit back and be given hours of free entertainment from RUclips and memes. So, internet users really do relate to cats.
I heard from my networking teacher some years ago, that the first internet (which was a town connect by a series of vacuum tubes) was set up many many years ago and (after test items and such) the first object sent via internet was a Cat being sent by one sister to another across town before the lady left on a vacation. He also stated that the cat did indeed survive being shoved in a tube, and then blasted down a vacuum tube to a hub only to be shot out to it destination. /unconfirmed

I think the internet is about ideas. Literally. It's a place to share ideas in all their thoughts and forms. Couldn't cats simply be a medium for expressing those ideas?
