    My favorite folklore is of an old RUclips where everyone happily enjoyed the comment system.

      And in much the same way this folklore is just as invented. The comment system had flaws, but we were used to it, this one is just simply different and I personally find it better.

    In my opinion, Slender Man is the essence of one of the most controversial topics of our day. Big Brother, the government, and other titles. The always watching, the unstoppable force, the idea that he can do what he wants to you, when he wants. Think about where he spawned. The internet. The last area of pure free expression and opinion where no one can get to you. Until now with this talk of constant monitoring, and we all know that over time, the internet will be fully monitored. GPS, IP addresses, Everything electronic being tracked. Slender Man is that fear. His tall, overpowering, unsettling stature and the suit only personify this. Your thoughts?

      Thomas Crackel That makes sense. In the end, It seems there is a running theme, but each person sees Slender Man in their own way in that theme. Which is why he makes such a great monster.

    I work with children and I asked a group of 10 year olds what they wanted to make movie about. We explored a couple of their ideas, Unanimously they decided on Slenderman. "The hero goes into the forest, slenderman kills him, takes his insides out with a knife. Then that makes him stronger."
    Gotta love kids. We're starting the shoot next week.

    My favorite internet related bogeymen are:
    1. Black eyed children- super scary.
    2. Stories about National Park disappearances of people.(usually connected to carnivorous Bigfoot)
    3. Disappearing Hitchhiker Ghost- Person gets ride but disappears on way to address given.
    4. Thunderbird- giant bird seen in storms( Birds of huge size,similar to vultures)
    5. Shadow people- people shaped shadows seen in corner of eyes

      Yeah that number 3 on your list I understand because in Jamestown, NC theres a bridge that supposedly has a girl named Lydia that only appears to men on foggy nights after it rains; the story goes she died on her way home from the prom in a car crash I think and never made it home? And of course she only appears to men driving solo or that are single? Variations of this story are abound, but I think these fit this particular scenario. Crazy stuff.

    Herobrine from Minecraft is a good example of this. Made up by a fan, the story was passed around and added to by other fans until the point where Mojang (the creators of minecraft) officially recognize him by "removing" him from the game in the patch notes of nearly every update.

    I use to think slenderman was scary until I actually researched and learned the "facts" about it. The thing is, he/it is just too ridiculous to be frightening. Different people kept adding more and more abilities to him, he went from a spooky figure to something that can supposedly: grow tentacles, teleport, super strength, super speed, mind control children??? The myth just got bigger and bigger until it was stupid. What makes a story scary for me is believability, the "this could be true" factor, and slenderman doesn't have that.

    • @crzykd1305
      @crzykd1305 10 лет назад +5

      when you phrase it that way its not scary, however I can word the same abilities in a way that appeals to his/its supernatural nature (yes, I see the contradiction).
      Slenderman is a man-like slender figure which has a disassociation to reality and its properties. Knowing no concept of weight or distance he may reportedly roam as if no obstacle were posed. With no determinable motive he is reported to observe and pursue his witnesses and was originally known for the charming and taking of curious children.
      On the other hand to make it ridiculous I can simply say;
      Slenderman is a man-like slender figure with supernatural abilities. His strength and agility un-mached he can move any obstacle and close on any target. With no known motive he is known to follow persons of interest and was orginally known for controlling children.
      In terms of visual representation this can be presented as the difference between passing an obstacle and seeing slenderman lift it, or the difference between him gesturing children to follow and them simply making their way to a static figure.
      Its all in the expressing of these abilities that he can be scary or ridiculous.

    • @ArchenOpteryx
      @ArchenOpteryx 9 лет назад

      punishment Code Interesting idea, and maybe Slendy is sometimes unpredictable in the wrong ways, but I think he also has the opposite problem now.
      See, the first image I saw of Slenderman was in a hazy forest, and it took me a minute to figure out what I was looking at. But then I saw that, about to ambush a guy who didn't apparently grasp the gravity of the situation, was a vaguely Doc Oc-ish silhouette that blended in with the tree trunks. It wasn't just the tentacles it was standing on: the figure was off-human in a lot of ways.
      That being my first exposure, I expected Slenderman to be this nebulous thing that could sneak up on you even during the day.
      Then Slendy basically turned into the well-dressed, faceless guy who stands out in the open and is probably just trying to scam you into buying a new camera.

  • @Calaban619

    Slenderman backstory and game cleverly tap into something that's been in our childhood nightmares forever: that "unseen thing chasing you"... you know the dream- where you try to run, but are stuck in sand... you are terrified of what IT is that you simply KNOW is chasing you- yet you never SEE it. You just try to run. and run. and know- forever- that its just "any second now". While it may not be folklore, its definitely ART (per other video)- as it invokes the makers original experience, and translates it into a media form so that other people that view it gets those same feelings invoked in them. == ART.

    I actually wrote a research paper on slender man in my folklore class last semester. Although, I think that Slender Man has alot of qualities that can also be qualified as an urban legend. Also, when you were talking about the internets nightmares generating the story of Slender Man I think that Carl Jung's idea of the "collective unconscious" describes this better. The use of motifs are in all folktales like Bluebeard, LRRH, and Hansel and Gretel.

      I did the same kind of presentation for my Myths and Legends class, and I agree, Slenderman is an urban legend, born from the internet. Then right after my presentation, we heard that two 12 year old killed their friend to summon Slenderman in our state. Sad to say, but with a few details changed it could turn into just another creepypasta for no one to believe.

    Zalgo, arguably the internet's first force of divine malevolence (a horrific demon-god) and apocalyptic legends (the sixth mouth that will sing the song that ends the world). He may be the internet's first deity, just as our ancestors might have believed in deities of the menacing elements before believing in deities that they can ally with. Sooner or latter, there may be a benevolent entity created as a counter the Zalgo.

    One of my favorite creepypastas is Pokemon: Black Version. Its about a hacked Pokemon Red for the gameboy. You start off with a Pokemon called Ghost that you can use to KILL other pokemon and even other trainers. At the end of the game, you are an old man in lavender town and there are no people on earth anymore, only the tombstones of the people youve killed using ghost. You have nothing now and can only walk half your normal speed and the music from lavender town plays indefinitely. When you go back home, the images of all the pokemon and people youve killed are shown to you and the lavender town music starts to slow down till by the end of your muder slideshow, its nothing more than demonic rumbling. Then Ghost will battle you. You cant use items, have no pokemon, and cant run. You struggle and struggle, hurting yourself as when Ghost's turn comes, all it says is "..." Then when you are almost dead, Ghost uses curse and kills you. The screen cuts to black and stays black. If you restart the game, your save data is now gone.

    Part of the appeal of folklore is the 'After-Thought'. The feeling of "What if that happened to me?" and "What if it is real? Am I safe?". Another aspect is (what I call) the 'Infinite Antagonist'; a 'Bad Guy' that keeps occurring no matter what resolutions are put into practice. Key elements in any folktale.

    I like the glowing red eyes in the tree outside my window. Like I thought glowing red eyes was some cartoon junk but apparently black silhouettes with limbs longer and thinner than my own (I'm a fairly slender... man... butnoreally) can actually have glowing red eyes. Surprisingly cute. Well not super cute since he followed me all the way here from my last apartment which was a little unnerving since I thought he was going to stay there like he lived around there.
    Hey um, come to think of it, things like this aren't supposed to happen IRL right? Right? I should probably look this up on some sort of folklore wiki.
    Whatever, I don't have the energy to be scared of my cute little cartoon-but-not-actually tree animal. Animal? Animal.

    I like that CreepyPasta and Slendy are like new forms of folklore brought to you via the internet and this makes everything more accessible so it is easier to find the originals and credit the people who invented them. You can also expand things with theories and create sequels, this makes finding a true canon difficult though, like people thinking the MH Proxies are CP when they aren't, BEN is a stoner, Jeff being a silly pervert, also Masky is shy for some reason when he seems more aggressive.

    The things you're mentioning about Slenderman also apply really well to Herobrine from Minecraft. He has no known motive or backstory, and his abilities are also unknown. In my eyes, Herobrine is a much better example of "internet folklore" than Slenderman because Slenderman was popularized by that one game, whereas Minecraft fans really have nothing to base their scary Herobrine stories off of. This means that the storyteller has to supply the horror, instead of the character already having it.

    Horror stories must hook into our innate evolutionary drive to simulate obstacles to attempt to get past them. The reason we dream about getting chased by tigers (to prepare us for a chase in the future) may be the same as why we love stories about a mythical danger, and why we so easily place it in a 'dream like' world.

    My favorite scary story is a pretty decent meshing of internet mythos meets horror literature. The book "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski began as what I can only describe as an interactive internet experience that slowly reveals the horror of a single house that defies the laws of physics and logic, while simultaneously depicting the downward slide into insanity by the "original author" along with the narrator.

      This guy is going out of his way to tell you that these occurrences aren't real. In my opinion, there is a certain amount of evidence that suggests that at least a portion of them are real and can't necessarily be explained by the modern skeptical branch of society. Such as Slavomir Rawics' experiences in the Himalayas after his escape from, not a concentration camp, but a Soviet gulag in Siberia. Have you ever noticed that some of the explanations provided by skeptics and the like often sound just as far fetched, if not more so, than the idea of a yeti or say, aliens? I'm not saying that every bogey and ghoul is real, but, there is evidence to suggest that perhaps there is a spiritual realm of aberrations that exist beyond our typical sense of reality, and that it's not necessarily crazy to believe that they may be something there that we cannot explain. Tulpas can be very real to the minds that conjure them.
