Why Humans Are Obsessed with Cats | Annals of Obsession | The New Yorker
Easy to care for, cute, poised, graceful, loyal, protective, peaceful, comforting, heart-warming noises, playful, agile, ninja reflexes, efficient hunters, supernaturally sensitive, eerie glowy eyes.... They just have such complexity to them.
T-Zay They aren’t loyal. CAT brain scans and intensive research proves that. A lot of people can also test your claim that they are peaceful. They are in no way protective. Their biology and ancestry plays a major role. Most cats excluding lions hunt on their own. They even hunt each other. Cats are not naturally inclined to protect humans because it is not an instinctive trait of them.

Merkel's Fourth Reich Eeeeh depends on the cat. I’m constantly amazed my one cat is as loyal as he is. He actually comes to me for help when sick. O_o which is bizarre but he’s also the second cat to do this. New cats are still in the juvenile stage, but are a mix of a classically dog like breed, so they might be more loyal.

People love cats because they are conscious and display a wide range of emotions. The fact they are independent and don't just do as they are told means that when they are affectionate and loving it has more meaning and is genuine.

The comment she made about people liking cats because of toxoplasmosis is absolutely ridiculous. I have loved cats all my life and I don't have toxoplasmosis. My husband, who has toxoplasmosis, never liked the cats we had as pets until very recently, when he's made an effort to understand our cats and their behavior. That's really all it takes to like cats.

What I love about cats is that they are not high maintenance
It’s pretty basic. They got jedi like powers:
1. Purr control to silence you.
2. Baby mimicry to manipulate you
3. Hypnotising big eyes to make you do their bidding
As we stored food, we attracted more rodents. Cats can catch & eat rodents. Cats developed a symbiotic relationship with humans due to rodent control. Then we developed youtube & cat videos went viral.
They play our instincts to protect our Kids against us... And we love it
I've heard cats infect people with a parasite which causes human obsession with them! Those clever cats! We'd love them no matter what!

I grew up with dogs all my life but when i decided to get a cat 8 years ago, my life has never been the same. He's my lazy roommate, my baby brother, my life.

They're basically wild animals and yet they seem precision designed to be a perfect companion for a modern human. They're small, not stinky, naturally inclined to use litter boxes instead of the floor, able to show affection, trigger a human's "protect baby" instincts with their meows and huge eyes.
They really have huge eyes!! I never realized how big they are in proportion to their heads, until I had my own (black) cat for a while. Then I saw a picture of a black panther and honestly it looks almost creepy, how tiny and dark the eyes are, now that I'm so used to my cats eyes. It's so weird

I LOOOOOVE Cats, I like dogs, but you are correct cats are very LOW maintenance, they can be left alone for a weekend and NOT tear up the place because they ate all of their food on day 1. :)

All my life I have considered myself a “dog person”. All the time my kids were growing up they had a cat or two, but they were the kids pets, I just provided the food. Four months ago I got the surprise of my life. I totally fell for a cat. A kitten, actually, a lovely little calico with the loudest purr and the adorable habit of sucking her left front paw...but only when she is lying on my chest while we both fall asleep. I’ve turned into a cat lady.

My calico is a butt, but my parents love her almost more than me. Calicos are very affectionate and can win over even the most stoic of people.
Before i had cats, i was basically a low life miserable 8-5 worker straight out of high school. Then I adopted 2 twin sister kittens and they changed my life. One didn’t make it to 1 year (im so sorry my baby) so then I adopted 2 more. We now have 3 and I’m so happy everytime I see them ☺️

I wasnt so much a cat person. I was a dog person, but didnt think much for cats, didnt even think much of them.
After a life crippling depression, I was left with my daughters cat. She was his life and when she moved out, I wasnt just as great company.
But then he loved me back to getting out of bed. After that, I got to understand the way he communicates so much better. Now cats are a source of love and joy. 🥰🥰🥰

JAMES KRAMER Yesterday, while saying my morning prayer before I got out of bed, one of my cats jumped on my chest. At that same time bad thoughts started seeping in to my head. I rebuked saten in the name of Jesus. My cat bolted out of the room at the same time. After some investigating, I've determined it was just a co-,incidence and laughed it off. It did scare me a little at first though.

Personally i have seen people arguing against it due to pity (eg. Every cats deserve to breed), ethical (eg. It is unnatural, i pity em), excessive love or fear (eg. Then they will extinct).
I love cats, my house take care of 28 unwanted cats, till now only 11 are adopted which leaves 17 for my family to care. We're not shelter but we cant left them to die
In my experience, the outside world is very harsh, i have seen cats being killed (maliciously or whimsically), tortured to death, involved in accident then left to death, prematurely thrown away and malnourished to death (especially kitten), roadkilled, honestly imo being preyed upon by wild dogs or eagles is a better option.
As much as good-intentional people try, in my opinion we can't save all of them especially if their population is out of control. Let alone area where cats become pest, or alien hazard for indigenous species (eg. New Zealand and Australia, land of the flightless bird).
If you have an idea on how to make better welfare to all kitties in the world, please do share it with us, for now i am advocating on population control, adoption, and humane treatment for all :)

It's been a lil over a week since my cat passed away suddenly. I had him for about 10 years. It's so hard to explain, especially to people who don't understand the love one has for their pet. My husband tells me he'll get me another Somali but I just can't right now. It still hurts because I loved him so much.
My kitty that I had 16 years had to be put down last year. We have another Cat but I still cry everyday. Losing a friend you grew up with is painful even if they're not human.

@@paulmurphy6496 - I am so sorry for the loss of your kitty. My kitty is still very playful and active, but she is 16, so I dread being where you are. Even after 9 months, it probably still hurts you. Cats eave giant ripples in the universe all out of proportion to their littleness.
I've been going through hard times in life and the main thing that kept me going was my cats. I felt I needed to get better cause they depend on me and I couldn't let them down. That gave the strength to keep going day by day. Now I'm much better I can tell they have been my major pilar to get here.

My cat is obsessed with me. She was abandoned and homeless when I took her in 8 years ago. She follows me everywhere and watches me nonstop. It's sweet but also a little creepy when I wake up and she's staring at me. Hopefully, she doesn't mean me any harm. lol

I think she's afraid she will be abandoned again. She was completely wild when I first saw her. It took almost a month before she would come near me so I put out food every day and hid behind a bush to make sure she ate it. One day I came out while she was eating and she didn't run away. She still had a raggedy old collar that was 2 sizes too small around her neck. She allowed me to remove it and pet her head. After that we were inseparable. She moved right in. :-)

I couldn’t agree more. I love animals; people confuse loving animals with treating them like children. I don’t like that people take them on planes or to the mall or such stressful environments, or dress them like babies or declaw them, etc etc.

I think that their independence is what people both like and dislike about cats. A cat person admires their independece. They are more our partners in life than pets. A person who doesn't like their independence is looking for a pet who is subservient to their will. Cats will never be subservient!

Well, I am perfectly happy to be conquered by cats. It IS amazing to have a alpha predator sitting on my lap. I adopted a beautiful semi-feral adult kitty and he has OBVIOUSLY put a ton of energy into resisting the impulse to scratch and bite me. I never punished him other than temporarily withholding affection (like, ten minutes). He figured out that I REALLY don’t like to be scratched or bit and now he almost never does it. About once a month or so, he gets a bit carried away and gives in to his impulses, but it’s becoming less and less frequent.
Ana Thanks for the feedback! I have been tempted to adopt a kitten, but I am worried about the same thing you mentioned. A neighbor told me that she tried to adopt my kitty, but (she says) he was too hostile to her other cats.
I get very emotional and very attached to cats, so the idea of returning a kitten is basically unbearable to me. The situation right now is pretty good. I am extremely proud of how my kitty learned not to bite or scratch me, even though I can tell he still has that impulse. Whenever I see him resisting that impulse, I ALWAYS say “Good boy! Good boy!” and pet him. Frankly, I’m amazed at how he resists the temptation simply because he knows it hurts me. I also suspect he likes being rewarded for his effort.
I also make sure I play with him when he gets amped up. I encourage him to attack strings, laser dots and paper bags (he loves attacking paper bags), or anything else - just not me.
TheTooginator seems like you have a good relationship with your cat, but drop the laser dot! It confuses and frustrates cats.
Ana Thats one of my “obsessions” towards cats. Dogs are cute in my opinion, but they all seem to be similar. Cats on the other hand have such distinctive personalities it makes me wonder how many different cat personalities there are. It makes me appreciate them even more! I love cats a dogs equally, but there’s just something more intriguing about cats.
First, thank you for adopting a semi-feral cat! I have adopted a handful of completely feral cats in my lifetime and tamed them. I have one who would bite, and I would just say to her "don't bite" firmly every time she did it. Now she is the sweetest thing, loves petting, and never bites. All of my former ferals are super tame with me and my husband now, but the drawback is taking them to the vet--they revert to feral under stress. 😥 Anyway, it's just patience and love, and thank you for yours for your cat!
They really take care of us when we are ill . They are honest in rage and love . They don't make fake friends.
