Los Angeles’s Dangerous Obsession with Car Chases | Annals of Obsession | The New Yorker
This chase is sponsored by SouthWest Airlines. Wanna get Away?
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That went dark really quick.
emeydoubletee
LOL
is that a pun too (cause the Malaysian plane went dark)?
to bad Malaysian Airlines stops flying to LA they used to but not any more
The romans had the collosseum with daily fights!the USA has this!
implement law to forbid it. Implement large fines for doing it. Sorted.
It's because secretly everyone wants them to get away.
I can't find the one with the pickup on fire anywhere on RUclips
whats wrong with automotive gladiator sports?
ONLY IN CALIFORNIA, WHERE ......
Police Chase In A Prius?
Well Played
Got Wasted when you need the adrenaline rush, but gas mileage is life.
I asked the same question or a Tesla...
Better yet Tesla in Ludicrous mode!
At least they're saving fuel for more chases.
Well played indeed.
I feel really sorry for the guy's dog.
Why don't you go erect a nice roadside monument to him.
Alaric why... he did it to himself? I feel sorry for the dog.
He took the easy painless way out, he brutality murdered his dog. The dog suffered a long painful death sadly.
If he kills himself then he decided to. The dog didn't decide to die
TwoAyem, sure buddy sure.
I saw the guy that killed himself live on KTLA, I felt so sad for the poor dog inside the car, the sign read "HMO's are in it for the money!! Live free, love safe or die." it was actually 1998 and the person's name was Daniel V. Jones.
AnarchoHumanism I saw it to blood leaked across the whole highway
The guy was diagnosed with both cancer and HIV and his HMO based insurance dropped him so he went and took himself out in front of the world.
@@heyitzLou sad stuff man
I can relate. I was a victim of Kaiser for 33 yrs.
this inspired me to go on a high pursuit chase
well then get need for speed hot pursuit 2(2002).
Thats a good one
Is it bad that I really want to do this.. maybe when I'm 80 amd have lived my life.. or when I'm 40 and divorced lol
EnigmaOGN
Both would be dope. Watching an 80 year old speeding in a mustang or some divorced dude going through a midlife crisis in a convertible that he stole.
Did you catch the guy?
Here in Australia, particularly where I live, Queensland, police have a policy to follow, that essentially weighs the safety of the pursuit against the safety of the public. The officers involved in the pursuit, and the other police in the office managing the pursuit, have to decide whether the pursuit it safe to continue, what they are actually pursuing the driver for - is it for an on the spot traffic offence, or is the car being pursued actually wanted for something? If it is the former, almost always the pursuit will either be discontinued, or will never even start. They will generally give chase for about 30 seconds then decide to discontinue. In this case, they will simply go to the driver’s house later and have a chat, which usually involves the handcuffs and a charge for fail to stop, which is a serious offence generally called Skye’s Law, after a little girl who was killed during a police pursuit.
You can watch more about Australia’s pursuit tactics here: ruclips.net/video/dhM_-D__Eec/видео.html
In just over twenty five years living in Toronto, I've never seen a car chase on the news.
In South Africa they just shoot the car being chased.
Ariel Cohen Unless it's President Muntu they give him a pass Everytime he breaks the law!
They used to.
And, ironically, seven new car chase videos popped up from youtube when I tuned into this one. Great advertising gimmick.
@Dee Bates hey the narrator lady said herself that she'll watch one if it's live on tv lol
it's the youtube algorythm dude
I actually prefer the car crash videos myself, especially the Russian ones.
Huh and you assumed wouldn't have known that because.......? That was my point. They knew that would happen too.
Dee Bates how is that advertising? i dont have any tv channels with car chasing. and the new yorker isnt gonna make any money off those videos
youtube just shows recommended and similar videos. idem with every subject
I sometimes wish theres a car pursuit with an actual professional driver and knows how to get around LA and actually escapes
Dammit Trevor!
Anas Takiyudin 😂😂
There actually were a few where the ppl got away lol
Guy on the motorcycle at night, and the guy who escaped through the drainage pipe. Just a week or two ago police quit chasing a guy where they supposedly have his real name. Not sure what happened to him. So two or three that I know of. There was another motorcycle one, but the video I saw was from his camera, so his "escape" might have been faked.
officialghetty theres lots of people that get away. It's very rare to see the escape on camera... just last month two cops got shot at and the suspects were able to lose officers in a pursuit but you wont see that video online or on the news.
few police chases* people*
Of course, there are, but they're very unlikely. And the criminals usually get caught later.
It depends on the situation and era. A number of the rum runners during prohibition became some of the best drivers in the US professional circuits after prohibition and their mechanics that modified their cars to out run police later revolutionized motor sports thus police hardly caught them.
There was the one where the guy hopped off his motorcycle, took off his jacket and walked away
We also like oxygen, water, and the sun here in California. We just happen to watch them live while the rest of the Country watches them on RUclips. Everybody has an "obsession" with car chases.
stinkbandit actually we have the poorest oxygen water and sun quality.
stinkbandit California is Americas cancer
LA has the most air coverage available out of any city.
Nissan 350z no that's Mississippi
I wish Atlanta would do these they are so cool to watch live
Thanks OJ!
The obsession with L.A. car chases is caused by bumbling law enforcement. The cops would rather follow someone for two hours than do what is necessary to end the pursuit. I think it might be a liberal thing based on government official's desire to not have anyone get hurt even if it kills them.
I believe that this is the issue. The police are hamstrung in their response. Once you steal a car or initiate the high-speed chase, you are 100% responsible for what happens next.
Some police forces around the world have an outright ban on pursuits because consequentially there is very little justification, especially if someone is killed in the process.
God I love LA
People seem to forget about the LAPD and Rodney King. That's one reason why it became a thing to not pull over and comply. Don't also forget that the LAPD is notorious for dropping off gang members in rival neighborhoods instead of taking them to jail or the hospital. And now, with the more recent cop shootings; it's not hard to see why criminals don't pull over. But once we have self driving vehicles, it'll all end.
"Are they going to get away with it?" The question that keeps us watching. And sometimes I wish they do.
California is a GTA server
"You don't remember the driver. You remember the moment"
*FACTS*
Crazy obsession.
They should be like us Brits and obsess about the weather. Particularly the discussion of the types of rain. A very rewarding obsession with no fatalities.
The weather is more lethal here in the US, it gets more sensationalist coverage than these chases sometimes depending on where you live
Awesome video...I would add two elements of car chases I would add are: desperation and adrenaline. Desperation: because criminals are to some extent, the result of a difficult and harsh world, and without money you resort to messed up choices. Not everyone has an equal upbringing and education and access to money so when people run from the police sometimes I think "i hope they get away" even though I know they should just stop and face their consequences. Adrenaline: because when it kicks in hard like in a chase, you literally aren't thinking straight and that's why sometimes chases are called off, because the driving becomes just so erratic.
Black guy, black guy, black guy another black guy, black guy, WHITE guy, black guys, black guy... speaks for it self.
0:16 "And these pursuits have become this Perverse form of entertainment."
Are you saying the "normal" form of Hollywood entertainment is NOT perverse???!!!
So turning wars into entertainment wasn't perverse?
"All I did was love her." When you love someone with a knife, it kills them.
This subject is quite fascinating. Cause they are so entertaining! Something unique to LA.
poor dog, dogs are always better than humans.
English?
Nah dumbass
thanks for promoting watching pursuits, i hope the news stations paid you well ;)
Anyone recognised the music in the background?
No more probations, warnings, tickets...but mandatory 5 years in jail and this problem stops cold.
WHO KILLS A DOG
JC_wolf 64 who kills a person?
This is why school shootings happen too... :/
Roblox Jailbreak
It’s funny because growing up in SoCal... these were all but normal for me. I had never really thought about how this never happens anywhere else.
I love this. It's literally a video lamenting the obsession with car chases whilst showing seven minutes of car chases and no context.
Americans always have liked to cut to the chase.
I wish we had more helicopter filmed car chases in Atlanta. La is lucky they get those. They are so cool to watch especially live but unfortunately east coast states don't do a lot of helicopter car chases
I wish they didnt tell us that his dog was in the car when he torched it :( 5:08
i need to watch the mustang one. link?
Ok now 5:11 that's soooo sad!!! The dog died ";( . .
I find it disturbing that people cheer on these idiots involved in a high speed pursuits. You don't cheer on hostage takers who threaten the lives of those they take hostage. Cheering them on, to potential accidents, seems unbelievable.
She didn't mention Stu, so she ain't no modern fan.
WOAH HOAH!!!!!!!!!! THAT WAS A CLOSE ONE
What are you talking about? Watch the whole vid. Stu is on. Smh.
The name of the game is $$$ and ratings. I should know....I'm in the racket.....only in radio.
Here in Norway the police stops pursuing when it gets dangerous for others. You guys across the ocean might wanna think about it as well, especially when 90% of pursuits are for non-violent crimes? Pfff. I think it's more about showing off and being power thirsty, than actually enforcing the law.
Just sit back and relax most of the time you know whos driving anyway just wait and get him while his not in a car. Most countrys the police stay back and use helicopter to monitor the car. then when he stops thy arest him/her. Easy. :D
Most pursuit don't happen for petty crimes. They happen when either the person is already driving like a maniac, drunks and reckless drivers trying to get out of a ticket (nonviolent), or bigger crimes like bank robberies or murders
Believe it or not, the LAPD has a very strict pursuit policy, they won't just up and chase you for anything. They also have 19 helicopters with at least two out on patrol on any given time. If ever a pursuit get's too dangerous they just have the airship monitor the fugitives till it's safe to resume a ground chase again.
You're comparing a city, whose population is roughly 4 million people, vs an entire country, whose population is 5.2 million people. Norway has 300x the land area. I know Scandinavians are obsessed with thinking they're better than everybody else at just about anything, but do you _really_ think there is any comparison here?
Peter Schmidt 13 million if you count the metropolitan.
When you play to much gta 5
If an officer deems a chase to be unworthy to continue if the suspect committed a minor crime and the risk is more higher than the reward, then they can call off the chase.
they watch to much fast and furious
lol true XD
And play too much GTA
No actually It's because of these incidents that are the reason they made the fast n furious movies and created GTA. If you lived in LA you would know how the culture is here.
I agree, it shouldn't be live. Also those who do it for the fame shouldn't be televised. Or gore stuff. Common sense tells you "if you make it a show, more actors are gonna pop up". Risking innocent lives in the process is plain wrong.
omg we need to see people blow up and dye ... we just need it in 4k plz... seriously
nick fatfly yeah man they should use that in pursuits, just use a dye bomb to dye them bright orange and they'll be so easy, lol, I'd totally watch that on 4k
1:45 Perfect PIT..into oncoming traffic.
5:21 Serves him right. He intentionally killed his dog, who hadn't done anything.
I remember watching that on Fox news who had the really close up and I felt bad for the dog. Even when the helicopters panned away you could see the blood start to make its way down the ramp.
The guy blew his own brains out protesting HMOs. The dog was burned to death against its will by him inside the truck. That is why I have more empathy for the dog than the guy.
ShinNakon so do police, they kill a dog and get 15 years in prison but if they kill a black man they are free to go
Lol? Police kill dogs all the time and walk away.
Jonathan Castaneda sad that an innocent animal is deemed worthless and that is considered okay by you
I got confused feelings about pursuits, because I like them, I search them on YT and ofcourse I hope nobody gets injured on them but now I realized that maybe is wrong enjoy watching something that puts peoples life in real danger
I love los angeles
Josue Dias I
Josue Dias California is Americas cancer
Merry christmas muchachos
Nissan 350z Not really a lot of historical events happened there
We have a element on the periodic table named after us
They showed *1* example of the person doing it to impress people and then tied it to "the police are bad"
This makes me want to play GTA V tbh
car chases and border/customs have always been a fascination in North America. lool..its good TV
This is pretty funny
Logan Huynh I know right?!!
Especially where they said the statistics of how many die a year or where the guy burned his dig to death oh yes so funny it's great
It all goes back to Kowolski in Vanishing point ( 1971 version) where speed means freedom of the soul
Springfield MO never show police Chase n we still have 10 to 15 a week
I was up there last week, i have never seen so many cops. Lots of crime huh?
Joby Goff really I went to mizzou, never heard about Springfield.
No there is not 😂
Armadyl Featherbreeze
you do realize there is more than one Springfield in the US. and in the Simpsons, Springfield is a made up city representing any typical city.
It’s a real life action movie. That’s all it is lady.
People in LA seem to think they're they only city that deals with traffic
ISFgang they have the worst traffic in the world. Yes other places are terrible but nothing tops LAs
Json07 you’ve never went to Mumbai or New Delhi in India.
@@JcksnACC You clearly have not been to Manila, Philippines.
People anywhere don’t understand LA traffic.
Ever driven in LA? The reason people love these is because the guy running is LIVING THE DREAM! Actually achieving the speed limit on LA freeways! Which is otherwise impossible, especially on the 405.
name of the thong please
What thong are you talking about? Got a feeling you are a 12 year old male who for some reason made up an account with the nae of a female. Perhaps you are still not sure which bathroom to use.
TheJer1963 What are you talking about? Maybe he wants a song name just made a typo... i don't know.
TheJer1963 He wants the song, but i think he's got a lisp
TheJer1963 he obviously meant song dumbass
There's those who think that police should suspend chases and let them go to avoid public danger, but if they do that, the attitude will be, "Lets go rob a bank Ralph, as soon as the police start chasing us, they'll stop, then were free"
7:13 minutes to tell nothing. Thanks for being just like any
This video was actually very informative about police chases. Also, it was 7 minutes and 13 seconds long, or 7 minutes, or 7:13, not 7:13 minutes.
Yes very informative, the guy drove up to his hood to see his mates and everyone celebrated, could’ve never figured that one out without this video
Of course... car's city... 6 billions of miles of freeways
Excuse me. I didn't like the interview itself. Thank you for the complement with these 13 seconds. Feel free to alternate these numbers, just keep separating them with double dots because 7 and 13 together doesn't seem to fit. By the way, next time I'll check for a video that's more likely 4:20 ones.
In the good old days the cops would play poker after a chase. Four clubs beat a king. '-)
i remember seeing almost all these live(:
such chases shouldn't be necessary, if your tax-dollars were put to good use, and a lot of lives could potentially be saved.
What you don't want with any chase, is that it is in a residential area, in a city, where there are a lot of people.
Then why don't they protect cities just to do that?
How much does one metal pole that rises from the ground with kevlar nets (motorbikes) cost, that you can install at the top of every off-ramp on the freeway? Then, when you have that, from the moment you are on the freeway, you're screwed, in front of you the cops can create a traffic jam, and they arrest you in a safe way for them. We have that technology for years, yet they still remain in favor of dangerous chases put everybody at risk. They use their cars as weapons, literally running over a person, yet when we even touch an officer with our car, even not on purpose, we even get attempted murder thrown at us, or aggravated assault. A typical double standard when it comes to the law, and as usual, that standard is in favor of those who are the puppets of the executive power of the government, the police. Strange, you have to be a criminal to enforce the law.
Love the snotty tone of this piece. You bet we love our car chases.
1:13 I've played too many video games to think that the wooden post would stop the car.
I want to know what's the point of a thumbs-down button if there's no indication that a comment is disliked?
Will Lowe well just to decrease the total amount if you have written something disgusting
I wouldn't know. I've never clicked thumbs down. I either click thumbs up, or nothing. And I hardly ever click thumbs up. I've subbed to The New Yorker for decades, and this internet thang is not often amusing.
It's for google to gather more user information and sell it ;)
The thumbs down button doesn't do anything to comments. It shows up on the video. Are you dumb?
Barry A. not all crosswalk buttons, thermostats and elevator close buttons do nothing.
I am sorry, but I have trouble believing that people are getting into such pursuits just for fame. Maybe it happens some isolated cases, but to depict it as a widespread phenomenon is a bit of a stretch to me.
If you're in a stolen car, head towards the area just east of the LAX runways and dump it there. The cop and media helicopters probably won't be able to follow you into such highly restricted airspace.
Robin Sattahip LAX will allow police helicopters inside there airspace though?
TheReal Lifehacks not in a case like that, they need to know in advance
then you would be turned over to federal agencies in which case you would never escape. Something tells me that going even near an airport when you are a felon is not the best idea, especially these days.
Xpry If the chase was approaching LAX they'd notify Air traffic control
You mean like what they did in Gone in 60 Seconds?
yup that my drug filled city
I wouldn't expect "The New Yorker" to understand
"Los Angeles’s Dangerous Obsession with Car Chases" by The New Yorker
10/10 not bias
Still rather live in Cali than New York
Dead channel
TheOnlyEnclave 5he new Yorker? Lmao eut
TheOnlyEnclave yours is dead
Says nine subs with 1 video
Omni Potent not everyone uses youtube to upload let alone be a mouthpiece of a website in video format
Is that all you have to say about a channel that uploaded a good video? Your channel isn't better.
And DON'T anyone try to blame the
GTA games either!!!!!!!!!
Stop acting like there's something wrong with car chases. They are far from the most dangerous type of crime and rarely does anyone other than the person running end up hurt. God forbid people try to put some excitement in their lives. God bless the police chase
Except thousands of dollars of damage is done, and the person running most likely cannot pay it. Just hitting one car (which some runners do multiple times) usually costs over 10,000 dollars to fix, and who do you think is going to pay it.
Jumbling Gyro Productions that's what insurance is for
If you have insurance on everything you own...
And thats why we pay higher premiums because idiots want to see a persuit and a crash. Inshirance is already expensive
there was a police chase in london last year where a child was run over and killed, do you think thats cool?
This is exactly why we shouldn't be pursuing them for non violent crimes. It's absolutely ridiculous. Most of the time they even have PLATES, copy it down and give them a fine later, simple as that. The few people who don't have a plate, just let them go if they don't stop. Only serious criminals should be granted an exception for a full pursuit.
Maybe the minimum sentence for a police pursuit charge should be 20yrs in prison. I bet that will slow it down..
with property crocke
This is what solid, unbiased reporting looks like.
going to LA on Septembers, so when I go there will be a chase?
Los Angeles Police high pursuits inspired by the Juice.
I remember watching the live footage of Daniel Victor Jones shooting himself in the head on the local TV news. I was sixteen years old. The helicopter crew turned their cameras away about half a minute too late to avoid broadcasting (around 4-5 PM) Jones sending a bullet through his skull live on TV. It was chilling. I will never forget it.
OTHER PEOPLE DIE BECAUSE OF THESE PEOPLE, its a sad way to lose a love one
She said you can move quickly through L.A. hahahaha!
Mary Melton is out of touch. High speed chases are not perverse they are interesting, because they give a live version of what law enforcement has to deal with on a regular basis.
you guys seen the movie night crawler?
2:38 lol OMG XD Best car chase ever, hehe instead of shooting up people or TMZ for trying to stop them they just THROW A SANDWHICH! Then when they ran out of gas they found a place parked, and didn't take hostages and instead just cooparated with the law and turned themselves in XD
Stu Mundel (Sky-9) is the greatest correspondent in the history of broadcast journalism.
Who is liable for any damage caused by a police chase? If I'm going around by, car, bike or walking, and get hurt who is fault? Yes I know the 'criminal' is in front, yet they wouldn't be driving if the police weren't chasing. Plus if hit by the police what then?
I'd rather know there was one headed toward my neighborhood or where I was driving so I could get out of the way.
