“Having a bunch of cats around is good. If you're feeling bad, just look at the cats, you'll feel better, because they know that everything is, just as it is.”

Awesome quote, though it only applies to cats who’s needs are met including love. Mistreated cats have more of a tweaked out oversensitive vibe going for them.
I think if I lived the life of a well cared for house cat the peace and joy would radiate off me as well.

@@michaelnice93 Spot on. I feed a stray cat sometimes(whenever I see her around) in my neighborhood, she had a tragic life as she lost all of her kittens either by road accidents or eaten by other stray dogs. Although she expresses clearly that she is hungry and want some food, she never let anyone touch or pet her, and scratches anyone who tries to touch her. As a cat lover myself I am tempted to pet her every time I give her food, but I accept her boundaries and never touched her till now, so there is kind of an understanding between us. This case could've been different if the tragedy part had not happened to her.

cats are essentially buddhist in nature...they just do what is needed without getting hung up on endless details...they are also minimalists...the highest understanding is that nothing is happening and nothing exists...next lower than this is life is pointless and nothing matters...us humans can make up all sorts of reasons for why any one thing or number of things matter or are important coz we cling to dualistic details but the cat is more in oneness mode not questioning things at all and being aware in the present moment..the cat can kill and in a few moments later show complete composure with no change in their being...there is no sense of guilt or remorse and they move on...although it is a precept not to kill...to move on is buddhism...to be aware in the present...not dwellong on past or future thoughts...if one can have no thought and be beyond mind for periods it is a great relief...some folks have thought of cats as cold assholes full of selfishness but actually folks have also considered buddhists in this light because we don't react but just walk away...to some it can seem we just don't care about anything but it is wise to avoid sh!t rather than jump into it...it's the asian way really...all of asia is energy of yin...the night...the feminine..the cool...the back channel way....the mystery...the west is yang....all up front and open and direct and over the top and in your face...asians have a style which is flavoured by the energy of yin...I should know I have lived in south east asia over 25 years...hmmm...I may buy a cat or a few soon...I have a mouse in my room and can't find a trap to buy but cat can solve this issue quickly

sh!thole but I know they must keep the rat and mouse numbers down..I have tried to get near a few but they are too aware and always run away....I've had them just sit outside my door and stare at me which is pretty trippy...have given them food but not in the habit for every day...I've given stuff and they eat a little and leave the rest or don't touch it at all...point being they don't need human assistance for survival...it's possible that cats actually think they are smarter than us because we appear to be filled with confusion and problems...I have put fresh chili's in the stairwell to prevent cats from crapping there but they crap all over them...have put bottles of water there and they still crap all in the corner...someoone has thrown piles of dirt on all the cat crap...whoever the cat is he is sending a message that he will sh!t there as he likes and nobody can stop it...there are so many other places he can do it in but he (assuming it's male due to the dominant behaviour) just continues to hammer that corner and make it disgusting to walk past only after a week...I refuse to get out there to clean it...ain't my job...I put chili's and water and it don't deter him from pooing there...it probably has to do with territory...he marks his spot and other cats crossing that point could be attacked...the fights at night are about 4 times a week and they are beauties going for 5 or 10 minutes...across from my room there are cats living in abandoned rooms...cats walking over the roof tops and these same cats I see down on the street sometimes eating food out of the garbage bags on the street...they sleep on verandas and sometimes fight over there too..big trees around so I'd say they jump into the tree and hop down branches to get to the street...hmmm...cats are weird creatures...they really don't seem to give a sh!t about anyone or anything and this is the ideal way to be...I was once taking care of a schizophrenic girl I took off the street in thailand and we got to a buddhist temple and the monk saw that she was dragging me down and he said "its ok to be selfish....look after yourself and don't get in trouble helping another"...it turned out she was massive trouble for me and I ended up arrested and in jail because of her...long story

I've had lots of cats, they all have different personalities. I had one named Chocolate who adored me. When I picked her up she would relax completely and let me hold and pet her as long as I liked. When it was relaxing time she would sit with me, at night she would sleep in my bed, and in the morning she would gently poke her nose against mine to be let out so she could eat.
She was partially an outside cat. As a kitten her mother took her back but I called her name and she meowed until I found her again. Another time someone trapped her and I called her and again she meowed until I could find her and when I released her she was clearly elated, she rubbed up against my legs and had the jauntiest little walk home.
Finally on the sad day she died, a racoon attacked her while she was outside in the bushes and she limped back home, I put her on my bed and she put her paw in my hand until she was near the end. Then she crawled under my bad so I wouldn't have to watch her die.
Nobody can tell me cats don't care after that. I think that cat cared about me alot, as I did for her. I remember when I put a collar on her for the first time she seemed so proud to be formally part of my family. I still carry that collar with me to this day. I'll never forget that experience. It changed my perspective on just how smart and caring animals can be, as long as you raise them with care.

@@ironwill2613 You obviously don’t truly understand felines. You’re missing out. Humans have a natural tendency to personify. However, that doesn’t change the fact that a cat, whether being fantasized about by a human or not, is a complex little thinking creature with emotions. Those are just attributes they have whether a human thinks it or not. They are who they are! As they develop a bond/ relationship with a human these attributes become more obvious as the two individuals from different species learn to communicate, trust and enjoy each other’s qualities. It’s a joy for both!

@@littlebirdie2 lol, I thought that sentiment was an attack, but yknow, if your point is just that two individual minds bonded and enjoyed each others existence through repetition and trust then yeah, can't really argue with that, that's the nature of any creature that has enough mental capacity to form social structure.
I think people can downplay animals recognition of death and sadness, but they experience that like any other creature, it's just that they have very little means to communicate and have much more interest in personal experiences than that of empathizing with another persons experience. Like this video stated, humans kinda obsess over misery and therefore we think nothing can feel pain like us.

Animals can be greedy. If one gets too greedy, it sets off the balance, and risks death in nature. Take a drink at the lake too long, a predator may appear. A deer running across the road, can get hit by a car. A dog stealing another dog’s food can cause a fight. Stealing a bird’s eggs can cause a bird to peck the thief to death. A male praying mantis looking to mate get’s it’s head cut off due to lust (biological reproduction). Try to steal a spider’s food, get caught in the web. Steal honey from a beehive, get stung.
You can call this survival, but due to overindulgence, overextending one’s self, stealing, and not thinking about consequence will lead to one’s demise. Of course this is not absolute. Some steal their wealth, scam their way to the top, ect. But the ego is what ultimately messes up our lives. We need it to survive, but it must be used as a tool, not as a crutch. You should be in the driver’s seat, not your ego.

It was amazing to see. It was just like what a human would do when they see two people they know fighting

There has been times where my eldest cat would fight with the youngest one. Both are females. When this happens and it gets intense between them, my only boy Milo would break the fight between them. Sometimes he will gently push away the older one to make sure she doesn't attack the younger one and then goes to the younger one to check on her and keep her a little bit of company. Of course, they are play fight with each other but I noticed is when both of them are actually fighting.

I have a 13 year old cat and have lived with cats my whole life. When I announced my pregnancy with my daughter, I was asked several times, "What if Gertrude doesn't like the baby?" to which I always answered, "She'll make it known and go on with her life." She has and she did. We could all stand to be a little more like cats.

A tip: Do not stare into a cats eye's with your eye's completely open the whole time. The cat feels threatened when you stare at them. When staring at a cat, blink youre eye's for every 3-5 seconds. By blinking towards a cat you basicly say: I trust you, you are no threat to me and I do not want to hurt or attack you. And when the cat blinks back, he/she trust you with the staring :)
Really nice feeling if you notice that the cats blink back to you!

When I was a kid, I had two cats and then got a kitten from a cat shelter where I volunteered. He was a bottle baby, found on the side of the road next to his mom's dead body so he had a tragic start to life. But this cat snuggled SO HARD, he was the snuggliest little guy. And in retrospect, I think he knew his time was short so he fit all the love he had in that time. He was about a year and a half when one day we found him dead in his favorite spot on the window sill. Absolutely heartbreaking and utterly shocking, I really loved that little guy. Now, I also had two full grown cats and they weren't big fans of him since he played constantly (you know, kitten). But when we died we buried him in the backyard. That same afternoon I was walking in the backyard (which was very large, it was a horse farm) and I passed by the kitten's grave. My other adult cat was walking with me as he had been outside for hours at that point (indoor/outdoor cat). I noticed then that there was a dead mouse gently placed next to his grave. My adult cat would hunt and he had another spot across the property that he used as a trophy cabinet/graveyard for all the little animals he killed. So he made it a point to bring this mouse to the grave of this kitten. I couldn't believe it, this is like 15+ years ago and it still gives me chills. Cats are way smarter and have way more emotional depth than we give them credit for.

    Love this video.
My only quibble is with some cats need of human contact.
I adopted a not abused, but very neglected adult cat.
She spent her first week with me, hiding under my bed, coming out to eat, and to use the box.
I am extremely patient, with cats, and let her figure out what was going on, but still talked to her and encouraged her to come check things out.
I did have 2 cats already, who gave her space and she really was not very concerned with them.
Long story short, she became the most wonderful animal companion I have ever had.
I love all my animals, but because of her situation I really gave her nothing but positive attention, and she really became a very loving friend.
So where I disagree with this video, is that she was extremely attached to me, unlike any animal before.
It was not about a lack a confidence, because she ruled the home, was not afraid of anything inside or out, and she took no shit from anybody.
Of course she wanted treats and love like any animal, but she constantly would seek me out, just to be there.
Of course, her sleeping curled next to my chest every night was for warmth, and security, but it was only me that she sought out just to hang and watch tv.
Again, she was not shy or timid. I have taken in 2 strays over time, and while they held power over my existing 2 cats, she would have none of it.
I now understand when I hear people talk about a cat that was more than just a dependent, looking for pets, and food.
She was "around" 7 or 8 when I got her, and her life ran it's course until last year, when she started getting disoriented and refused to use the litter box, and I had to put her down.
I am a 50 year old man, who lost my father when I was 30, mother at 40, and one brother soon after.
Losing my wonderful friend was the hardest thing I have had to go thru, and over a year later, can still not even look at the hundreds of pics and videos I have of her.
There are always exceptions to every rule, even when it comes to biology, and instinct.
    She was an exception.

There IS a very specific family structure, social support between the cats, and sibling rivalry and territorial issues. The one common truth is ALL of the cats love and respect to me. I think there is one flaw in this book though. He does say not to try to be cats, but then gives us cat like rules which contradicts how he says cats behave and how he said not to try to be a cat.
We can't be cats. Not merely because we're human but because that desire to change things is important. Eventually we must settle into a society or maybe a totally different way of life in which we too can be at peace. Other animals have been living and evolving much longer than we have.
We too, have to seek a life style that brings us peace. That's why we ruminate, and we change things, and we fight. I don't think misery is our nature, I think it's because we keep building societies that make us miserable.
Isn't it funny how all of our systems eventually get corrupted to the point where they only enrich a handful of people at the cost of everyone else? Solving that is our first step to a society where everyone actually gets a fair shake.

  • @Palmieres

I really appreciate what cats bring to the table in some specific philosophical discussions, specifically in how self-centred humans are, to the point where an animal that does not feel the need to serve humans is considered unloyal and untrustworthy. The hubris of that human-centric point of view borders on the despicable. We value a creature who wants to be enslaved by its connection to humanity, whom we think should feel worthy based on how useful it is _to humans_ rather than a creature that lives independently of us. We are so digustingly proud and conceited that any creature that sees us as just another living being sharing the same world, as a creature who refuses to see us as masters or owners, is even vilified and attacked for it. Even regarding dogs I reject the word "owner", it's awful. We're, at most, guardians, tutors, and above all, friends. Dogs are wonderful, but I often wonder if we didn't purposefully breed them to become addicted to human approval and so we could benefit from that connection. Cats, on the other hand, recognise our existence and will respect us only when they're respected back - like pretty much all wild animals. I'm very, very glad we didn't manage to take that away from them.
And concerning cats not really showing affection to us humans, that's the furthest thing from reality.

And to make ourselves feel better, we sort of "shame" cats for being our masters, trying to impose human morals in order to justify our action of caring for them at the detrimental of our own resources ie. time, energy, money when essentially, we have zero obligations to take care of them.
Damn, I love cats! They are such an inspiration for us.

I have learned more from my childhood cats, as an undiagnosed autistic child, than my own parents.
Dont get me wrong, they are great parents all things considered, but never a good model for happiness and serenity, or philosophy. And 'Model' here is the key word. They lived what they preached. Lead by example. One great lesson right there.
Observing cats i started to simply enjoy life as it is in the moment, enjoy the sun on my skin, playing with seemingly uninteresting things, care little of the enticements of others, and most of all: Boundaries.
When my parents always wanted to push my boundaries like preventing me from closing my own damn door, or getting all up in my business, from cats i learned to have set boundaries and protect them with teeth and claws, firmly but not with needless anger, and yet to have a door always open for the cats as they always bring good things with them (cuddles), and are innocent.
And as an adult i learned that they dont piss/shit around to spite us monkeys, like my mom used to believe for so long, but to tell us something is wrong, its a cry for help: Ignorance/desperation before malice. Another Great lesson just right there.
And to repay the many lessons my cats taught me, and even if they dont really need it, i am teaching them to speak, so that they might be more precise in their demands. Im doing such with recordable buttons (ironically, the buttons were invented for autistic children, i guess everything is connected isnt it), and they already know 'food', and one of them 'pets' too.

There was a stray cat that come to my house and beg for food, but I didn't give my food, and i can see the sadness in his eyes, cat does have feeling and emotion, but the nature of cat behavior that was given by their ancestors trap them into thinking that survival is the most important, I've met my friend's cat that has been missing for months and when it was found, the cat was missing the owner so much it cuddles and even shed tears, the theory that cat only care for themselves is wrong because not all cat are the same.

I had a different relationship with my cats than the one outlined here. My female cat loved me and wanted my attention. She was so happy when I petted her and paid attention to her. Now that she is gone I feel bad that I didn't give her more attention than I did. She was frightened when as an older cat she got oral cancer and she looked to me to make everything okay, but I couldn't. My male cat was very self-centered. He felt the world revolved around him and everything was created for him. He was king of the cats in the neighborhood. He chased the other cats around. He taught me that it was important for him to lay a scent trail to mark his kingdom; he taught me why he brought his prey into the house (so other cats could not swipe it); he was an excellent hunter and caught birds all the time. He knew how to sneak up on them. He also enjoyed chasing squirrels, just for fun. He was always one bite away and could never catch them. And he knew how to get what he wanted from me; he had me trained. He was the most persistent cat I've ever met. My neighbor used to say, " I know he's just a cat, but he is so annoying." Also, he was a fussy, fussy eater. He was ill for several years before he died and ate non-stop the most expensive cat food I could find. His thyroid was over-active. Both my cats were thin and experienced pain before they died. Both refused medication. My male cat bit me so hard when I tried to give him a pill, the wound got badly infected. Both cats would run when I tried to hide medication behind my back. They knew what I was up to. When I left them alone for three days to go to a funeral, they wanted nothing to do with me for 24 hours after I came back. They thought I had abandoned them. I think my male cat knew what I was doing when I called to put him down because he was suffering too much. He clearly gave up on the ride to the vet. My point is that cats have such distinct personalities and complex motivations, it is impossible to talk about cats in general. I just saw My Octopus Teacher, and I realize I learned from my cats the same way he did from the octopus. But I did not learn what John Gray learned from them.

Great video! However, I’d like to point out that the idea of ’cats don’t need their ownes” is not true, in fact a lot of cats are left and die every year because people believe this. It’s true that cats are more independent and more likely to be able to fend for themselves than a dog for example. But they are still domesticerad animals, and their chance of survival is a lot slimmer by themselves in the wilderness than with a owner. So please don’t abandon your cats.

It’s true that they’re incapable of agreeing with an ethical stance on this issue, just like human toddlers, but it’s simply not true that they physically can’t survive without consuming meat. The fact that cats can have heart attacks kind of pokes holes in the idea that they "don't care"; more accurately a cat's morality is defined by not letting potential predators or annoyances know that they are getting under the cat's skin: the facade of their indifference is in itself a defense mechanism...all instinct, no anthropomorphism needed.
