  • "Hvaldimir" - the white beluga whale that appeared in North Norway May 2019. His origin is unknown, and he was freed from a harness by a fisherman when first sited. He is currently (June 2019) taken care of by the Hammerfest municipality where he resides free in the harbor. Staff from Norwegian Orca Survey feed him every day and check upon his condition. He is definitely well trained by humans before he appeared in Norway. He constantly picks up objects of anthropogenic origin from the bottom of the harbor, most probably in hope for a return of feed fish.

Hvadimir is now touring southwards on the Norwegian coast. He seems to manage very well so far. Some weeks ago he seemed to be entangled in a rope. However, when rescue people started to haul the rope, it turned out he just had the end of it in his mouth, playing with it. His contact with people may become a problem if he swims further south to more populated areas, as he is not afraid of humans and boats.

Hvaldimir is no longer in Hammerfest. Has he gone to the sanctuary yet? He needs a more secluded environment away from motor boats. He also has to catch his own prey daily. It would be reassuring to know that he has found a family pod. He is at risk on his own even if you think of him as a "spy crustacean". Be kind and share his sightings.
