This guy has superb touch. His dynamics are so good and his clarity on these "twiddly" parts are so good. He really brings the lower melody out with those arpeggios tip toeing around above it (similar to un sospiro) One of if not my fave classical pianist
This has always been my favorite Hungarian Rhapsody since I first heard a recording of Andre Watts playing it. Hamelin plays it so exquisitely. I love the way his hands flutter around 1:04. I love how gutsy he is at 3:48, and wish I had the balls to tackle something like that live. Great performance.
@Asriel Kujo oh I'm sorry for sharing my opinion I somehow forgot that people don't like when you share your opinion unless you have the same opinion as them
Technically speaking, Marc Andre Hamelin is unrivaled! Musically speaking, he is also a superb musician!!! I think his acme and apotheosis reached the zenith of brilliance when he was in the prime of his youth. I never heard a pianist play Liszt with such fury!!!
On this piece I prefer Roberto Szidon... Have a listen... When he does the double trills it makes the hair on my neck stand up... On number two though it's hard to beat this guy .... that cadenza is bonkers
If his playing didn't lack exquisite musicality almost completely he would be a great pianist indeed. But despite his immense technique his sound is sooo boring.
There is nothing boring about this. A superbly felt and musical performance, by a technique which is more advanced than any other pianist in modern recording history. As for the music, one of Liszt's most extrovert and enjoyable outpourings. Find a more exciting version, or better still, play it yourself, double tenths, glissandos and all. At this point, Hamelin could play anything ever written, so his concern was probably more control, and perfection.
@@tomowenpianochannel A lot of nice words. If only this was also present in his musical output. He is a technician without true musicality, that's why he is not regarded as an important pianist, to say nothing about "great". However, if you convince people to listen to him... This kind of playing is only "great" for a very primitive contemporary understanding of classical music.
This is absolutely graceful performance, I love it❤, Thank you Hamelin for the performance.

When the guy says 480p is higher quality you know the video was posted before 2010
The audio quality is also superb.
@@rize118 Yeah of course, most old taped recordings have ridiculously good audio for the time
It was 2010 when this video was uploaded to RUclips; this recital was held in 1997, and broadcast in 1998 in Japan.
