Hawkwind are Great , still have the LPs "Quark strangeness and charm" featuring this track and "X in search of space" both get a regular spin "Orgone accumulator" is a rocking tune too
The Original studio version of this is from '77 with Bob Calvert (RIP) on Vocals. This Version is fi '89 with quite a different Line Up. It's based on a Sci Fi Book by Roger Zellazny and was made into a Movie in the late 70s. It's set in the Future when a Nuclear War has knocked the Planet off it's Axis and there are all sorts of Mutated Beasties crawling around. A small group of People have to travel across America through the "Damnation Alley".
The Hawkwind album Warrior On The Edge Of Time is well worth a look. They are an interesting band, they started at about the same time as Pink Floyd. One of the most odd things was when Lemmy Kilmister (MotorHead) was kicked out of Hawkwind for taking drugs [amphetamines rather than psychedelics]. There are some great Hawkwind documentaries. Keep Reacting!
The Mighty Hawks! The band that turned howling racket into an art form. Loved them forever and still do. First band I ever saw with the classic lineup in 1974 on the Hall Of The Mountain Grill tour and as often as I have been able to see them since. A truly progressive band, always changing, always evolving, always making great music and always Hawkwind. Damnation Alley was about a 1977 film adapted from a 1969 book about a post apocalyptic world. You should compare this with the original version on Quark, Strangeness and Charm. Ones I'd pick out to listen to would be The Psychedelic Warlords [Disapear In Smoke] & Assault & Battery / The Golden Void, maybe also Who's Gonna Win The War from Levitation as a short intro to this rapidly evolving band. Like Zappa, the Hawks went in phases and, also like Zappa, none of them bad. One of the few bands that I can listen to any time, anywhere and for any reason. Timeless stuff and there's nobody quite like them.
The Production on Levitation puts it High up on my list of LPs that I'd play to Non Hawkfans to get them Hooked. Its especially good after consuming certain things.
@alabang100 0 seconds ago For 3 or 4 years from 1972 until the formation of Motorhead Lemmy Kilminster was the bassist/vocalist with Hawkwind, the best single of theirs being Silver Machine, Lemmy penned a track called Motorhead which was his last with Hawkwind before forming the band of the same name in 1975
Lyrics inspired by Roger Zelazny’s science fiction novel of the same name.( Not very great film too!). Love the base on the middle section of the original 1977 album version.
Iv listened to this a half doz times , and for me in my humble opinion, it is singularly the best piece of music iv heard on this channel, brilliant suggestion," what a hoot of a tune" 🏴 happy healthy peace ✌️
All I know about Hawkwind is literally “ Silver Machine “.. so I had no expectations listening to this . I see from SPK it’s from 1989 with a very different line up from the one i remember seeing that once on TOTP.. it had a wee bit of promise for me near the beginning …. Then fell off a cliff into a Post-Prog nightmare heralding the end of my interest . 🤷♂️ 👍🏴
Great Band ! The 80s may not be their best stuff imo , but its still better by a Million Miles the pish that is on Normy Radio . Would be good to list all the band members who have been in "Hawkwind " ! Proper Trippy tune , Ace . " Assault and Battery ! is a great track to try out .
Hey CNC , after being hit by the locomotive of hawkwind last night, I spoke to my sister today, who was really into hawkwind back in the day, and she said have you heard the original version of the song " Motorhead" the one Lemmy kilmister does with his band "Motorhead" , the original version, still sung by a much younger Lemmy, with his former band " hawkwind" is much better, and she's spot on , the good thing about it is you can really hear Lemmys relentless bass, if you think you've heard Lemmy showing a " Rickenbacker" who's boss, wait till you hear this, so I thought it might be a good comparison video, with a twist, twist being Lemmy of coarse, anyway later 🏴 happy healthy peace ✌️
It should be pointed out that this is a live performance recorded at a show during their 1989 USA tour. Saw them on this tour and this is what they sounded like. The reggae thing in the middle was not in the original studio version, just a thing added for the sake of mixing things up a bit for the fans.

These guys walked a thin line between Punk & Prog & most impressively did it well. Unique.

A great track from this great band, this song doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

I was expecting prog, but got more of a long format punk. This was great
Really should have listened to the original studio album version, far better.
The only " Damnation alley" that i knew of, was a post apocalyptic film from the late 70's
Eureka.😀
Try some older hawkwind.. I recommend the album 'Hall of the mountain grill' for a patreon.
Still prefer the original studio version, the live versions of some of their songs are inconsistent sometimes brilliant sometimes not.
Too bad not the original. Wrong lineup and vocals. Oh well.
Do a GRANDADDY, guys... perhaps 'The Crystal Lake'. ✌🏼
