Great song. I loved the way (intentionally or unintentionally) they mix up Pete Shelley style with the style of Steve Jones. You can't argue with the message either. I went to do a dissertation at uni on their controversial prosecution over the HR Giger painting but was dissuaded by a visiting American Professor. Shame. The US gave us the DK's and at the same time we had Crass. Go on Haniers, i dare you to play some Crass! To ease you in, try BigA LittleA or What's Next Columbus? Anyway, thanks for playing this - a great start to a Friday morning.
I agree that this DK's song has a strong British Punk sound. I think that's what I like about it the most. Crass were an English art collective and punk rock band formed in Epping, Essex in 1977[1] who promoted anarchism as a political ideology, a lifestyle and a resistance movement. Crass popularised the anarcho-punk movement of the punk subculture, advocating direct action, animal rights, feminism, anti-fascism and environmentalism. The band employed and advocated a DIY ethic in its albums, sound collages, leaflets and films. Crass spray-painted stencilled graffiti messages in the London Underground system and on advertising billboards, coordinated squats and organised political action. The band expressed its ideals by dressing in black, military-surplus-style clothing and using a stage backdrop amalgamating icons of perceived authority such as the Christian cross, the swastika, the Union Jack and the ouroboros. The band was critical of the punk subculture[2] and youth culture in general; nevertheless, the anarchist ideas that they promoted have maintained a presence in punk.[3] Because of their free experimentation and use of tape collages, graphics, spoken word releases, poetry and improvisation, Crass have been associated with avant-punk[4][5][6] and art punk.
I've always been aligned with Dead Kennedys' political views or they've been aligned with mine. We both want what's best for the Planet and its people. The music on this song is some of the best I've heard them play. It is very well paced with a strong and powerful driving, throbbing bass. A Band doesn't need a Rhythm Guitarist when they've got a great Bass player. A lot of the time Dead Kennedys' music is played at such a frenetic pace that I don't move to it at all. One of the best nights of my life was seeing Dead Kennedys LIVE at The Royal Antler Narrabeen on Sydney's Northern Beaches in 1983. All the mohawk Punks were going berserk taking up the area 30-40 deep near the stage. They would come surging back towards us and we would accommodate them by pushing them back towards the stage. They loved it and we all had a great time together. Jello Biafra waited for them to come back near the stage before he dived into the crowd and lay on his back still 'singing'. To fully understand most Punk Bands you need to appreciate their humour. "Give me Convenience or Give me Death" is an hilarious indictment on American Society. Homer Simpson finds it unbearable to wait 40 seconds for his popcorn to be microwaved. That Simpsons' episode was decades after that Dead Kennedys' album. "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables" is chock full of funny songs such as "Kill the Poor" 1. "Kill the Poor" music: Biafra, East Bay Ray; lyrics: Biafra 3:07 2. "Forward to Death" 6025 1:23 3. "When Ya Get Drafted" 1:23 4. "Let's Lynch the Landlord" 2:13 5. "Drug Me" 1:56 6. "Your Emotions" Ray 1:20 7. "Chemical Warfare" 2:55 Side two No. Title Writer(s) Length 1. "California Über Alles" music: Biafra; lyrics: Biafra, John Greenway 3:03 2. "I Kill Children" 2:04 3. "Stealing People's Mail" 1:34 4. "Funland at the Beach" 1:49 5. "Ill in the Head" music: 6025; lyrics: Biafra 2:46 6. "Holiday in Cambodia" music: Dead Kennedys (Ted, Ray, Biafra, Flouride); lyrics: Biafra[29] 4:37 7. "Viva Las Vegas" (Elvis Presley cover with altered lyrics) Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman 2:42
That was the outro track at the end of Side two. Side one of "Plastic Durgery Disasters" opened with the same lady doing an intro track kinda like a school film soundtrack.
Such a great band. For my tastes one of the best rock bands in US history. Largely because of the protest element. But the guitarist is no slouch, the bass, drums, all stellar. I consider Jello a truth bomber. He has rarely, if ever, misinformed.
Great band! Changed the trajectory of my musical life. Other punk bands to review Husker Du, The Minutemen, The Replacements, X, Minor Threat, Social Distortion...
@@hanierfamily That's a tough call They have songs that are purely instrumental, no vocals, that stick closer to that true surf rock sound, and songs that have vocals which lean a little bit away from the surf rock sound and more towards punk, while still maintaining some of that surf-rock sound. (In case it matters, I think all of the instrumentals are covers of surf--rock classics). Which style would you be more interested in checking out? Help me narrow it down and I'll make a couple of suggestions BTW, I effed the record title: it's Living in Darkness, not everything turns gray, which is a song on the Living in Darkness EP.
@@hanierfamily Miserlou, Pipeline, or Mr. Moto for instrumentals. (All on the Bitchin Summer EP). Bloodstains or Everything Turns Grey for the slightly punkier songs, with vocals.
Two suggestions on songs to review - Dead Kennedys “Moral Majority” (you’ll have to read the lyrics as you listen) and Rudimentary Peni “Dutchmen” which gives an interesting take on the conflicts of the time (early 80s).
Toy Love - Bride Of Frankenstein (Band version) This is a horror theme song from New Zealand. The (Band version) has the best sound quality. Recommended.
the 6 or 7 heavy surf guitar influenced songs they have peppered thru their catalog are my favs. This one along with Chicken farm ...no other band sounded like quiet like them.
This song 💓 holds a very special place in my dark dehydrated little heart. For better or worse punkrocker for life I'll be buried 12-ft underground with my cherry red doc's and mohawk if i don't get a bald spot first . 12 feet? cause deep down I'm not that loud bad or smelly😊😅
"Sometimes their songscan seem a bit harsh".... ...how surprising, harsh punk rock... How did this happen? Apart from Moon Over Marin and We Have a Bigger Problem Now there is one sweet song they performed live only once, which might be more to your taste: Pull My Strings... It is so funny when I hear your excuses about playing DK "political" songs. So politically correct, making sure nobody's feelings get hurt. That is what among the others DK was laughing at.
This is the song that tipped me over the edge into a life time of PUNKROCK in 1984 14 years old. Thank you so much family ❣️
The harsh production can't hide the fact that this is a perfect pop song. Gorgeous.
One of my Fav DKs songs. Clearly one of the more Surf guitar numbers they did.
For those who thought that DK was too harsh this is the song that I would introduce them to the band with.
Such a great riff. 🎶
@@snuffcore9686 yep. Could almost be a pop song if not for Jello's vocals and Rays guitar sound. Btw, how about Too Drunk to Fuck for accessibility?
@@kevincostelloe4006 Too dark.
Great song - one of my favorite things is when I fired this up driving the Marin Headlands north of SF
My favourite guitar riff of all time.
One of best the Kennedys ever did before they fell out

I saw the Dead Kennedy's at Le Rendezvous in Winnipeg in October of 1984, thanks for jogging my memory.

In the 80's , California was a very conservative state. Everything changed in 1992 after the riots. Cool ending to song ! 🌙
Chris my friend calling the Exxon valdez an incident is like calling a compound fracture a scratch😅😂
MTV Get off the air and Riot from the same album are also awesome
Small correction. MTV get off the air is from the Frankenchrist album.
Well, you got Riot right.
If you like the surf rock/Ventures/Dick Dale sound you need to check out the band Agent Orange (anything off the Living in Darkness record)
Which Agent Orange song would you prefer?

You have to Lurv the Dead Kennedys
I really like 'The Dead Kennedys' , this isn't one of my favourites of theirs I'm afraid, but they're still a great band.
No-one can ever accuse the DK's of not kicking ass. p.s. this was way before the Valdez. 7 years before.
Could you take a listen to 'Tarot Woman' by Rainbow?
A good song, but they have done much better
The end bit is out of context. If you don’t listen to the opening of the album it doesn’t make sense.
Listen to New Order age of consent
