It's fantastic to read about your success on RUclips Elements - Meditations & Mindfulness. We feel proud to be a tiny part of your journey on RUclips. Remember, you've done all the driving, we just put down a couple of road signs to help you get there.
This seems a lot more useful in terms of ranking content against yourself compared to the 1 in 10 ranking you see in the very beginning of RUclips studio. Probably because audience retention doesn't care what's trending as much as what's valuable to the people who already clicked.
I do like this graf, i find it very useful. I liked Dan's video and thought he did great bringing the Community Tab to light. I really like the camera intro you did. It was different and the sound affects were spot on. But i also watch these videos to learn how you are creating them, not just for the information in the certain video. Watching Tv (when i do, which isn't very often) I am noticing little things in editing they are doing to keep it interesting. Like fade in and outs and b roll and clips in between the show footage. Thanks for all you all do! ~shelly
My audience retention and view duration is actually pretty high. But I still have hardly any comments on videos which is a bit discouraging. I ask questions in the video with the hopes to engage the audience more and perhaps intrigue them to share their thoughts, but still have no actual feedback. Views have also decreased, but could be due to my decision to stop sharing them on Social media. In time though. I Still have a very small channel with right at 57 videos. In time. Thanks Rob for all the helpful info. You've been a huge help.
I've actually started going back thru older videos that are starting to get more traction and looking at these metrics and taking out some of the bigger dips.
Thank you. I’m trying to compare your video to the VidIQ optimisation guidelines. I’m stumped on the number of keywords in your description. It would be great if you could take us through what keywords you selected and why, and how these show up in your title and description. I’m not asking you to show us anything secret. Just how the publicly available things like title and description have been put together following your guidelines. A couple of examples, using your videos, would be really useful. I’m never quite sure whether or where to add hashtags in titles and description. Such a little thing, but I’m still not too clear about it.
So the hypothesis presented here is that literally one word, “Personally”, triggered a descent from above average retention to average retention and this is somehow doing things “wrong”? I am all for using data analysis to leverage growth, but at some point it really does seem to be feedback loop paralysis. If a single word is triggering an exodus of viewership from a video, I think the problem is a bit bigger than avoiding the wrong word, because one word should not be triggering that sort of thing. You never know what other words you might utter in the future that are land mines. What I think is more likely is that people clicked on the video to find out what the major feature change was and when they got the information (early), viewership outside the typical audience left because they got what they came for.
"This intro took me HOURS to make ... for very little benefit" I feel personally attacked. Thanks for the nudge to stop being such a perfectionist and really double down on "good enough"! :)
Thank you for showing your gaffs with retention that helps so much. I found it discouraging seeing drop offs right off the start and only getting around 40% viewer retention on average. I thought I must be doing a bad job on my videos. Really helped to see a channel way more successful is not all that different. 😁 I think I just expected to much and figured others were more in the 70-80% This makes me want to push forward more 👍
I used to have long but very cool animated intros on my other channel and it was hurting my audience retention rate a lot. So on my new channel I decided to go with just a 5-10 hook that either has a punch line or a "before and after" snapshot if it's a tutorial.
I don't seem to have access to this. Not sure if its because its not available yet in UK or if my channel is too small. either way looking forward to using it when available to me.
I think unfortunately a good chunk of it is from clicking through but not wanting or being able to exercise at the time 😭 but I'm definitely doing my best to make the videos more entertaining to sit through even without following along! And it does seem to go up over time thanks to return viewers coming back for their workouts, bless those sweet beets 💕
RUclips does not show my content many times at all, impressions say so, however I have a few decent subs so my return viewers is always happy in the RUclips studio so I am most pleased with this . I wonder about retention but not enough to worry about, not much to worry about as it's just music :) have a great Sunday!
In case you didn't realize, really small channels like my own don't have typical performance against which to measure. We have a tooltip saying there aren't enough recent videos of similar length to calculate typical retention. This is rather ridiculous given even one previous video would provide a metric against which it's all relative and would offer helpful insights for improvement. I truly love RUclips and marvel at the platform. However, I do think they've made unusual decisions that discriminate against smaller channels who need the metrics more than any channel to help them grow. Excluding small channels from community posts, comparative-to-similar videos/channels, stickers, super-chats, etc. are all contributing features that would enhance and accelerate small channel growth. Ironically, these are the very features which ultimately would help RUclips increase revenue by allowing smaller channels to grow faster. Thank you for your fun, friendly and always helpful videos.
One of the problems with all the comparison metrics is that many gets blurred with shorts and long form content. I hope they soon allow you to filter accordingly.

I contend if we even have one previous video within a certain number variance of duration, it would be enough for it to provide at least one set of metrics against which we could compare. Just wanted you to know you're not the only one left outside in the cold of this metric :-).
Before starting this channel, I watched your content on how to grow and implementing those has been helpful. I am still relatively new but my thumbnails and CTR is above average now I need to work on audience retention. Please guide me 😀
This typical retention is marked as not available for all my videos with the lame excuse of not being enough of videos of the similar length (there are some but how should I know how many are enough?). With Dan's video I think people has heard the news, went to check if they have the tab now and started to play with it or just forgotten about the video afterwards. I don't think there is a way to say "Hey people, your favorite store has 80% off right now, but watch the video till the end first!" and expect them to stay and watch. They never stay to listen till the end in the fairy tales either ;)
"Typical retention not available" on every one of my videos. Seems odd with 4K hours of watch time, 1K subs, 35 or so videos, and ~50K views in the last 365 days?
My videos suffer the same fate which is rather disappointing but, to be fair, I think we have to accept that as a new channel (well I am) people are starting off watching with curiosity only. Because people don't have very long lengths of retention, unless you blast them with something else more interesting or, they come to your channel specifically because of your content, they just click on to the next video. One thing that's important to remember (and I keep hearing this on RUclips) is that you have to have at least 100 video uploads before you can really judge the performance of your channel. It's a bit like being an author. Stephen King was rejected many, many times, as were other famous authors. It took them a long time and multiple essays, short stories and books before they could really judge what their audience (and publishers) were enjoying with their writing. It takes longer (and a lot more hard work than sometimes advice on RUclips suggests) to be successful on RUclips. 'Just one thing' won't make much difference but continually adding improvements will, if you're patient long enough.
Don’t just watch the videos write everything down and keep it right next to you want you edit so u r always remember and don’t forget! Plus keep pushing, god bless
I am starting to think a lot about what Mr Beast said in his Colin and Samir interview. They asked him what the magic AVP is for a video and he quickly spit out, "70%." I don't question his knowledge of YT analytics because he clearly has cracked the code, but it made me think: is that global to the platform, or his niche? Is it relative to his other videos assuming a high CTR? Why do my >70% AVP videos not gain even a little traction? If I ever got to talk to Jimmy, that would be the 1 question I would ask: where did the number 70% come from in that interview?
Very simple. The ocean we navigate has more goldfish than hungry sharks willing to have every bite of information we share. In many cases, you try too hard and you'll simply kill the whole purpose of the video by underdelivering.
I find it hard to interpret whats right and whats wrong. "is it the format? is it something i said? did i let them down? is my video just not useful at all? are there other ways i can keep them hooked?" just so many questions run through my head. i guess this stuff takes experience and time to understand
I have a channel. A month ago my impressions were at a good level and then all of a sudden my impressions started to drop drastically. And now it is down by about 70%. Please explain the reason and how to fix it.
Want an epic example, of this video's concept, in action? Watch ANY video from "Mark Dice". No intro, no fluff, no logo, no splash.... INSTANT content, from second 1.
Interesting video. I need to rethink my video intro to prevent that initial drop off but I’m not sure what I should do. Perhaps I just get into the action and forgo an intro.
My RUclips Studio says "Typical retention not available." Do you know why? I checked my very first video which is almost 4 months old, but still nothing. I'm still a young channel so maybe I need a certain number of videos for this to show up? If yes, then this metric doesn't help those who could really use the help to grow.
I hear things about sharing the videos on FB being bad for a channel yet that’s the only real reason I get the views and solid retention I get ! It’s a tricky place to do business is YT I just make videos because I like to at this time as still way off monetised .. but to be honest would be nice to see some of the $$ from the adverts that get slapped all over my content :(
@@Toohard315 I just took a look at your channel and it seems your problem is your channel doesn't have a focus and you don't upload very often A good idea would maybe be to make more minecraft videos
I noticed they changed this lately, was very happy to see it. Especially on my newest videos from this month, which went viral (for me vs what I normally do)
According to Mr.Beast your retention needs to be at 75% and you should be good. I trust him cuz he literally knows how to start a new channel and make a 'viral video.'

I left that video because I’ve already had access to the community page for a few years now.
Yep, that could have been another reason. A bit clickbaity for channels over 1k subs, but we do know the majority of our audience is under 1k subs.

I'm still a young channel so maybe I need a certain number of videos for this to show up? If yes, then this metric doesn't help those who could really use the help to grow.
I am interested in the pop ups i always notice new graphics and memes i enjoy the creativity
Great content as usual thank you 🙏🏽
I hear things about sharing the videos on FB being bad for a channel yet that’s the only real reason I get the views and solid retention I get ! It’s a tricky place to do business is YT
I just make videos because I like to at this time as still way off monetised .. but to be honest would be nice to see some of the $$ from the adverts that get slapped all over my content :(
Dan is The Man.
Definitely!
Thank you for the uploading.
As always great content you are uploading.
We really enjoy it.
wooow..
No problem Serendipity tv, thanks for watching! Make sure you 👍 the video if you haven't already 😉

Was good wasn't it?
That white background of analytics, it burns the eyes!
vidIQ channel caught small RUclipsrs like me😂
That new intro 🔥
Thanks. Trying to keep it as short as possible!
I seen that and it helps me a lot
How do I know what it is that my viewers want to see from me?
Thats my problem too
BUT YOU HAVE MORE SUBS THAN ME
@@Toohard315 I just took a look at your channel and it seems your problem is your channel doesn't have a focus and you don't upload very often
A good idea would maybe be to make more minecraft videos
@@XavierTheFallenHuman ok thank you 😀
@@Toohard315 No problem
Nice video Rob.
No problem กชชโย Goal RUclips, thanks for watching! Make sure you 👍 the video if you haven't already 😉
Cool. I noticed these myself.
I noticed they changed this lately, was very happy to see it. Especially on my newest videos from this month, which went viral (for me vs what I normally do)
Well in 31 subs it won't matter either way. Congrats in advance!
@@vidIQ thanks! Of course it was wrestling and AEW All Out videos that did it 🤣
@@vidIQ Whelp. It happened. :D
According to Mr.Beast your retention needs to be at 75% and you should be good. I trust him cuz he literally knows how to start a new channel and make a 'viral video.'
MrBeasts retention rate goal is 70%. He adds more tension throughout his videos. He uses a tension
elief cycle to keep the viewers interested.
Good information
Thanks!
Woo amazing for Sherring Vidio. I like this new update it Will the make small you tubers acces the Community... My fraind's.
How about asking your viewers what they want from your videos? Would that help in retention
