I lost my late Great Aunt’s recipe and have been heartbroken. This is the closest to her recipe that I remember. Can’t wait to make these. Thank you for posting!!!!
Oh my goodness! These were a special treat from my grandmother at Christmas time, she would can them at summer time and make us wait, drooling all the way to Christmas, what a treat!
SUPER STOKED!!! You have told me what I have tried to figure out since red-headed Mrs. Robinson, my Nanny's neighbor, passed away many years ago. We loved her. I always think of her when I sing along to the song, too. She made the BEST watermelon pickles in the world. That's how I began my profession as the family pickle tray-maker at age 6. I still do it to this day most especially for my dad to continue my childhood tradition. So, THAT'S how to get the same translucent look and color, cider vinegar and golden sugar. I cannot thank you enough! I have everything but the sugar and am on a mission, now! Is there a link to the recipe on the website, please? Fan for life! 😂 I'll be back to let you know how they turn out! Ty, again!
i grew up on these as a kid from my godmother . she always made them . but i never had them sweet . i always had them like a regular dill pickle taste . but i bet these are so good . great video it brought back great happy memories for me. have a good weekend and hope ur pain level stays low . mine was low all day until bed time now . it's defiantly has my attention . hope i can sleep . sending prayers you sleep well !!!
OH!!! My gosh. I have not heard of this since I was little. A very, very long time ago. Just the memory brought me to tears remembering my aunts, and grandma making this. Along with chow chow and more
My grandmother used to make this. We called it "block" pickle because it was cut in cubes. This was a real treat---like candy for us kids. Thanks so much for the recipe. Can't wait to try it!
heard of this from my hubby saying his mom used to make it.But I never had a recipe , he explained ,but didn`t know exactly the ingredients,THANKS will have to try this
Oh Joy!! Thanks so much for posting this! I have such great memories of my Mama's Watermelon Rind Pickles. Don't know if you have ever read the poem, Reflections On a Gift of Watermelon Pickles, but here it is - in honor of your pickles. Hope you have a great day. Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle Received from a Friend Called Felicity During that summer When unicorns were still possible; When the purpose of knees Was to be skinned; When shiny horse chestnuts (Hollowed out, Fitted with straws, Crammed with tobacco, Stolen from butts in family ashtrays) Were puffed in green lizard silence While straddling thick branches Far above and away From the softening effects Of civilization; During that summer- Which may never have been at all; But which has become more real Than the one that was- Watermelons ruled. Thick imperial slices Melting frigidly on sun-parched tongues Dribbling from chins; Leaving the best part, The black bullet seeds, To be spit out in rapid fire Against the wall Against the wind Against each other; And when the ammunition was spent, There was always another bite: It was a summer of limitless bites, Of hungers quickly felt And quickly forgotten With the next careless gorging. The bites are fewer now. Each one is savored lingeringly, Swallowed reluctantly. But in a jar put up by Felicity, The summer which maybe never was Has been captured and preserved. And when we unscrew the lid And slice off a piece And let it linger on our tongue: Unicorns become possible again. ~ John Tobias
Looks just like my grandmothers. Thank you for mentioning that it is golden sugar and apple cider. The color is amazing. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks for making these! I got some from a former neighbor once and loved them, learned canning so I could make them one day..found a recipe from Hobby Farms magazine and it was awful...so I will try your recipe. The first ones I had tasted mostly like watermelon...the second ones were very syrupy and stuck in my throat...this looks like it will taste more like summertime.
I love these pickles! I always make extra syrup and can it. I use this syrup over turkey wings in a crock pot with hot sauce, YUMMY! You could put extra syrup over chicken pieces or ribs in the crock pot with hot sauce and let it stew all day! Just saying excellent pickles and syrup! Myra
Pulled this oldy but goody up. This is gonna be a rough summer , as I cant work till the corona passes, trying to waste nothing. I have a huge sweet tooth, and I am sure this will satisfy that, save me some money by not buying candy, and not wastingthe rind! Triple win!
Salt brine is a great idea. When I tried them, they tasted good, but had a limp, unpleasant texture. Pulling some moisture out in pre-brine is good thinkin.
I made two or three different types for a friend a couple of years ago, he is still enjoying them!!! Hey you should be in the outdoor kitchen!!! Too rich is that too much sugar for How?? My hubby would like it with about 1/2 that amount. Either ways it's good stuff.
Went to try out your recipe and realized that the canner is in storage until the end of the month. I have the watermelon now though - any idea if you can freeze the rind for future pickling? Or will this degrade it too much? Love the videos - keep up the good work!!
HI Mrs. Volfie I thought about you guys today because i had made a cheese egg casserole with sausage patties and red link sausage. It was pretty much all i had in the fridge so i made like a pot luck late night dinner. I want to freeze it but im not sure how eggs are in the freezer.
I will have to try your recipe; the only pickle recipe for these that I knew about had sliced lemons in the brine, and I just DON'T like lemons. Lemonade and lemon meringue pies are my exceptions. tyvm for posting this recipe,
In the words of a very wise woman "Who'd'a thunk it?" I've never heard of this but it's REALLY waste not want not isn't it? May I ask if those spices are what you always use to spice your pickling vinegar for these, and if you'd ever added Mustard seed or ground to balance out the Christmas feel of cinnamon, clove & ginger? Also is it easier to peel the rind when you have the big wheel slices or when you've chopped it up? Thank you.
Can these be soaked in brine overnight then processed using the same steps using Mrs. Wages bread and butter pickling pack that already has spices in it?
I have neverf tried these b4, I know what I am going to do with our melons this year Lord willing. how much would you charge me to make a cartoon pic of my horses an chickens and one with horses chicken an a goat both with a barn garden in them
I had to watch the video two or three times since you said not to l@@k at your hair. I didn't notice anything wrong with it lol.. The critters (especially birds) would love them rinds as well. Too hot for canning!!

My Mom always made these as I was growing up, I miss them so much. She also would use them like pie filling and make a delicious pie.

Yes, 2 pints of watermelon rind pickles, add corn starch to thicken, put in pie she'll and top with another pie shell. So yummy.
One of those things from way back when...nothing went to waste. Looks good!
My grandmother used to make this. We called it "block" pickle because it was cut in cubes. This was a real treat---like candy for us kids. Thanks so much for the recipe. Can't wait to try it!

During that summer
When unicorns were still possible;
When the purpose of knees
Was to be skinned;
When shiny horse chestnuts
(Hollowed out, Fitted with straws, Crammed with tobacco, Stolen from butts in family ashtrays)
Were puffed in green lizard silence
While straddling thick branches
Far above and away
From the softening effects
Of civilization;
During that summer-
Which may never have been at all;
But which has become more real
Than the one that was-
Watermelons ruled.
Thick imperial slices
Melting frigidly on sun-parched tongues
Dribbling from chins;
Leaving the best part,
The black bullet seeds,
To be spit out in rapid fire
Against the wall
Against the wind
Against each other;
And when the ammunition was spent,
There was always another bite:

Of hungers quickly felt
And quickly forgotten
With the next careless gorging.

Extra syrup?! BONUS!! I would make a jar of pickled onions or zuchini or anything seasonal!! This is where I can experiment and have fun!
My Daddy used to make Watermelon Rind Preserves when I was a young girl. I would never taste them but now I wish I had!
I usually give my rinds to the chickens. I've never heard of these before. You learn something new everyday. Thanks for the recipe Mrs. V.
Me, too! In fact, just this morning, I cut open a watermelon and gave the ends to the chickens...darn!...but will make the rest into pickles. :-)

Any time I make pickles I boil the extra brine and jar it up. You can used it for pancakes, waffles, etc.
mm, I haven't had watermelon pickles several years. YUMMY!
it's all new to me. my grandmother might have made these but sadly she past in 1977 .
I bet this would make a delicious relish to add to potato salad.
I've had these once, and always wanted to try making them. Thanks for sharing!!!

A new water kettle! Where have I been? 😀 My husband said his mom would make marmalade and pickles too. Looking forward to trying the recipe. Thanks.
I like to use red hot cinnamon candies as my flavoring for these. So amazing! Thanks for sharing!
I made this recipe last Saturday and this morning I woke up to the empty jar. Thanks for sharing your wonderful recipe!
awfully quiet here... love it!
i mean love d recipe!
I made these for our forth of July cook out and they were a huge hit thank you for another wonderful recipe 😊
Keep the green part on! Makes it crunchy!
Too hot to even can outside, but I will probably do it. You have to do it while things are in season so I do everything I can outside.
Now that's a new one!! Never heard of such a thing.
Salt brine is a great idea. When I tried them, they tasted good, but had a limp, unpleasant texture. Pulling some moisture out in pre-brine is good thinkin.

Just got done with mine!

Sooo what does this taste like? I've never heard of this before. Very interested to hear :)

I never heard of these before! I'll have to give them a try! I wonder if I can substitute stevia for the sugar?
Oh My Favorite!
Thanks Bev, new tea kettle?
Never had them. What do they taste like?
Can these be soaked in brine overnight then processed using the same steps using Mrs. Wages bread and butter pickling pack that already has spices in it?
interesting thanks for sharing
Will a metal spoon affect it or wooden / plastic better
i thought you had a summer kitchen for doing canning and cooking in the hot summer ?
My hubby's aunt made these, but she put candy red hots in them. Man were they good
I will try that next time!
It gave them a little kick. And a pretty red color.
How long will this keep on shelf
Question...did you peel off the outer dark green peel? They look good! Do they actually taste like a Bread and butter pickle??
A bit stronger, with the ginger & other spices. Think somewhere between Bread'n'butters & pumpkin pie spice.
yes I think you peel off the dark skin but very thin peels to save the whites for processing if I understood right :)
Yes peel off the skin..I must have accidentally edited that out..they are rich like sweet and sour sauce..would go GREAT with ribs!
+OurHalfAcreHomestead Ok thanks!
I have neverf tried these b4, I know what I am going to do with our melons this year Lord willing. how much would you charge me to make a cartoon pic of my horses an chickens and one with horses chicken an a goat both with a barn garden in them
