Awesome Andy. Excellent review I’ve been in love with my Nikon D4 and it’s iso etc but this OM1 wow. Thanks very much. All I’ve got to do now is learn how to use it properly.
That's certainly the best series of images I've seen taken with the OM1 by a country mile, and the best overview for wildlife photography I've seen so far. I'm hoping to get a look at one in a few days, a big thanks.
Wow, the images at such low ISO settings are amazing! There's now no longer any justification to carry the huge FF cameras and lenses anymore for wildlife and action photographer anymore, not to mention the insanely priced zooms and telephotos for the FF cameras. Well done Olympus!
This is why I have bought your books- you make images that most of us can only dream of and you have been doing this for years with much less sophisticated cameras. With such a high frame rate and speed available I can only guess that your photos get even better with that great imagination of yours. Can't wait for your next book.
This video is a true eye-opener! Real high ISO images of wildlife is exactly what I wanted to see from this camera. I am now sure about switching from full frame!
We here in Australia started getting our cameras on March 1st, Ihave so far shot 4092 frames[as of this morning] in my yard and garden. Heaps to learn and a joy to use. Easily the best camera I have owned in over 40yrs of shooting. A mate has the 150-400..drool, and I have the 100-400 which all those images were shot with. Great content as always. Cheers from QLD Australia.
Ive got a D500 with a 70-200 and a 200-500. However on the telephoto side I'm genuinely considering the om1 and the 300 as the procapture is such a ridiculously amazing feature for wildlife action!
Wow and thank you it's so nice to see someone as good as you regards using the Olympus gear. All we see by other photographers is FULL FRAME or go home 👍🏻👍🏻
Now then Andy, Greetings from North Yorks....Great video and intro to the OM1. Just wish I had waited a little longer to switch to Olympus from my Nikon D7200! Having been watching your Wildmanrouse series last year and signing up to your Composition Series, I purchased the OMD EM-1 MkIII + 100-400mm, plus 40-150mmPro in January!! I shall have to practice and become competent with what I have until my critic (my beloved wife) believes I'm ready to move to the next level! Lol.
Yes Mal matey I remember!!! Now as a WildBunch member you get the discounted training and it's this Wednesday so please sign up if u wanna learn how to make the most of the OM1
Beautiful Images Andy You talked a lot here about the importance of high ISO and how well the OM-1 handles high ISO settings, but how does it compare in that regard to the E-M1X and the E-M1III - don't they have about the same ISO performance and doesn't the new version of OM Workspace also offer the new AI Noise Reduction with those models ? Shooting RAW (as most serious photogs do) I wonder how much the high ISO performance of the OM-1 really has improved over say the E-M1 III
I am a professional photographer so I shoot RAW and wrote a book on it. For me, someone who is hyper critical of imagery, there is a big improvement especially at high ISO. Those that can't see it don't want to see it and are usually trolls anyway. It works, and also high iso is important but so are other developments too. So i am a serious photographer if that was what you were saying.
Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation, Andy! The enthusiasm you bring on screen is unmatched. Quite honestly, this is probably the first in depth and detailed 'wildlife and bird photography' session I have come across especially wrt the OM Systems OM-1. Looking forward to testing this camera soon. Cheers!
Great stuff I just bought the OM-1 and 300 f4 Pro with both tele converters, Also got the 12-100 f4, 7-14 f2.8, and 90mm 3.5 Macro. It's a little more difficult to set up than my Canon is but I'll get the hang of it, My question is do you have a video on how to set up AF for wildlife and BIF? I have the AF set up with SH2 25fps animal detection on and have birds selected but lets say like a squirrel comes around how can I change from bird to animal like with a button? Thanks;)
Very nice review 👍....but beare in mind... your using the expensive 150-400mm pro lens, that lets a lot of light in at f/4.5 in the entire zoom range, produce much shaper images, 😉 and cost more than 5x more than for example the 100-400mm f/5.6-6.3 ...newer the less, I'm waiting for my OM-1...looking forward to it 😉
Bear in mind Michael that I reviewed the 100-400 and have a lot of images in very low light like pre dawn with hares and deer. This lens is still used for deer stalking and produces excellent professional quality results for me.
Top video, thanks a lot. I part exchanged my EM1X and EM1.3 for two OM1 bodies and collected them on Wednesday. I've been out twice and I am really impressed with them. I have one for general wildlife and one for macro. It picks up birds in flight so much faster than my 1X, and the keeper rate is brilliant. It picked out the head/eye of an Egret, which was about 50 metres away and standing behind some twigs. I was amazed. As far as I'm concerned, the OM1 is a wow camera.
Great video, thanks. I am going to order one. Ref lenses, I mainly shoot birds. I cannot afford the 150 400. Can you tell me, would you suggest the 300 pro or the 100 400 please? Does the 300 pro lens have very much better quality? Thanks
The best OM-1 revue out there. Well done. Great images!! Felt like I was being yelled at for the first couple of minutes until I got use to your passion. :-) Again, your photography is top notch!
Very informative video, thanks. I currently have the Olympus E-M1x (bought after the price drop) and the Panasonic G9. I use to mostly Canon gear before. R7 looks interesting, but really dislike how they have moved the controls on the back, why. No battery grip and none planned, don't get me started. Will see once the R7 ships and hopefully someone compare them.
Enjoyed your video Andy! I missed one thing though - your thoughts on the ERGONOMICS ! Is the OM-1 as comfortable to hold as the E-M1x, especially with a long telephoto (I use 300/ Pro + 1.4 TC) ? From images I have seen, the space for a (large) thumb on the top right back of the camera body is not as generous as on the E-M1x.
Any mate doesn't make a difference. These days just get one with plenty of RAM, at least 16GB and preferably more, as processing is always intensive with any camera
I’m considering investing in the OM System OM1 so I don’t have to carry heavy full frame camera gear when I’m hiking. With that said, and not being familiar with the system, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t converting the raw files in Olympus Workspace into TIF images processing, as Workspace applies noise reduction as a part of the conversion? I would like to see some RAW images non-processed in, say, Capture One. Perhaps starting the photo developing process in Olympus workspace is the price of carrying a lighter camera system. Nevertheless, thank you for presenting the beautiful photos and information!
I removed the troll Ben so apologies for that, he will take no part on this channel again. As far as I am concerned the images are fine out of Workspace for my professional use and it's all I can say. Others have their opinions. I have tested this camera longer and harder than anyone else in the field and am delighted with the stuff I can now do, other Canon / Nikon / Sony users alongside me have agreed it's a level playing field now. I can't be bothered with files and camera comparisons as that is not my job, please speak to an OM Systems Ambassador for that Ben.
The sound is atrocious but stay with it as it is fast and splendidly informative. So much so that I may change and purchase this camera. Great job, Andy and superb images at astonishing ISO's. Will it however shoot well with older lenses?
Have you shot it in a dim rainforest setting yet? I currently use a Sony A9 and 200-600mm and struggle in low light with that combo in SE Asia a lot and constantly trying to find a focusing option that consistently works. (perhaps I need to learn the settings better). If purchasing new what lens/lenses would you go for (excluding the pricey 150-400mm) - I do have an old GH4 and 100-300mm languishing in cupboard before I gave up on Panasonic and moved to Sony.
Hello Andy Thank you very much for your review, that helps us to make up a decision. I got a question What lens or lenses do you use for taking those awesome pictures?? Thanks a lot
Thank you! What a great camera! I'm getting one for sure although my em1 mkii is still very usable. I have a question: Can the new battery be charged with the blh1 battery charger? Thank you.
Depends what I am doing Dave, I change modes according to my shooting plan / strategy. Sometimes I use Auto ISo, sometimes I don't, it just depends what I want to achieve.
I always shoot at native ISO’s, 100,200,400 etc, I once read the in between ISO numbers say 10,000 instead of 12,800 was 12,800 under exposed, therefore introducing noise. Do you have any thought on this or should I just ignore native ISO from here on ?? ( I’m shooting a modern R6 ).
Fantastic review Andy. I shoot music and performing arts, often very low light so high ISO and low shutter speed, wide open - 6400 plus - and was considering going back to FF (Canon or Sony). The EM1 II struggled at high ISO and difficulty focus locking in low light. I am giving the OM1 a chance here and your review is making me feel better, ahead of delivery 😂.
Thanks very much for this video, really interesting. I have the OM-1 and the Sony A1 and they are both great for my BIF work. However, I do not agree with the OM-1's high iso performance. Noise creeps in at iso 1250-1600, which shocked me, this before any manipulation software is used.
Well everyone is different. I just shot several images at iso 10,000 and beyond that have sold to commercial clients. The noise on my A1 was far worse.
Andy, I am impressed by the quality of your work at high ISO values-so impressed that I plan to take your advice and expose to the right (within reason, as you say) at high ISO values in order to get a brighter picture. So, in what follows I am not quibbling with your results, as your results speak for themselves. I do think it is important for me, and others, to understand what is happening in OM Workspace. For one thing, running the raw file through OM Workspace prior to processing in some other program is an extra step in an already time consuming process, and so ought to be avoided if possible. That raises the more important question of why it might be thought necessary to run the file through OM Workspace. The answer is that OM Workspace applies a noise reduction algorithm to the raw file even when Noise Filtering is set to Off. I verified this by opening the same raw file (shot with my EM1-3) in DXO PhotoLab and OM Workspace. In PhotoLab, with denoising turned off, the image is much noisier than in OM Workspace. When I turn on DeepPrime denoising, the image in PhotoLab looks much better (of course), and very much the same as it does in OM Workspace. This means two things: first, it is not necessary to run the raw files through OM Workspace if your processing software has a good denoising algorithm; second, image quality in the OM-1 raw files is not improved to the degree one might expect based on the image shown in OM Workspace. This does not mean that the new sensor is no better than the old one-your work clearly shows that the new sensor is better. In my view, based on looking at the raw OM-1 images in the DP Review studio test, in comparison to the raw images from the EM1-3, the new sensor is nearly one stop better in low light than the old one. This is consistent with your comments in the video (as I understood them), in which you have been able to increase your maximum usable ISO value from 5,000 to 10,000, more or less. As I understand the situation, the promise of two stops improvement in noise reduction and one stop increase in dynamic range is in reference to hi-res mode, though OM Systems has not been forthright in pointing that out in its sales pitches.
Thanks Gregory. It’s is true that they do apply a little bit of noise reduction I think to the raws. It’s not true that you don’t need workspace. As someone who is Uber experienced at processing raw files, and I have done many comparisons already, the output of higher iso images from workspace far supersedes anything else I have used. Personally I don’t care if it does or not I just use the best for me, I have no allegiance. But I have found a massive difference. And it’s more than 1 stop my friend. I have sharp commercial images in no light at iso 16,000 taken 30 minutes before sunrise. They are included in my training. Everything I have found is from extensive testing in the field. Not for a day but for a decent time. As a pro I know what quality I need. So everything i say is what I’ve found and basically what I need to have. The improvements are astounding. I know this from having literally thousands of images now shot in real world conditions. So I appreciate your comments and that’s your view. I have a different one based on my experience in the field but that’s cool, everyone needs to have their own views in this world. Thanks for writing such a nice and informative reply, would engage more but dashing for a flight byeeeeee
@@Wildmanrouse It is true that real world results are much more important than comparisons of test scenes, and so take priority in any discussion of whether one camera is better for one's purposes than another. My effort here is to help me and others put your results-which are indeed impressive-into the broader context of evaluating whether the image quality of the OM-1 is worth the cost to upgrade from the EM1-3. One part of that assessment is to compare identical scenes taken with the two cameras. Not having the new camera, I have to settle for looking at test images taken by others with both cameras. This morning I downloaded raw files for both cameras from Imaging Resource. These are shots of their standard test scene. (This is the one with cloth swatches, bottles, and a grid of colored squares.) I can open these files in OM Workspace, which presumably applies the same noise reduction algorithm to files from both cameras. Looking at files ranging from 6,400 to 25,600 ISO, I agree that the improvement in detail and color is more than one stop. (I would say it is definitely less than two stops. [Edit: Looking at EM1-3 1600 vs OM-1 6400, the improvement in detail is two stops. Again, this is after application of the OM Workspace denoising algorithm, which gives an appearance almost identical to the DXO DeepPrime for EM1-3 files.]) On the other hand, the noise blotches in areas of constant color show less than one stop improvement, because they are considerably larger. I doubt that this will be a problem with natural scenes, as there are few areas of constant color in nature. (A clear blue sky is an exception, but the sky has little color in low light and is generally hazy in morning and evening.) So overall I am encouraged by the test results as supporting evidence alongside your results. By the way, do you sell printed material that teaches your processing methods? The image of the jumping squirrel-as just one example-is amazing.
@@gregoryashmore8554 hi Gregory. I’m in a hide in Finland using the tracking for birds in flight and have already today taken shots that astound me. Like I said above, all I care about is how the camera performs in the field in my everyday Pro life. I don’t care for the ins and outs, just that it delivers what I ask it to when I push it. My processing methods are archaic, 1960’s and awful to be honest!! I do teach my artistic based approach on one to one’s but even then it’s rare as there are a lot better people at processing than me. It’s not what I’m about. So thanks for the nice interest but trust me you’d be disappointed!!!
People tend to forget that Olympus is a fantastic camera, it offers way more than the FF counterpart. Yes maybe FF gives you little more dynamic range better noise control at night. But that about it. Every other category the Olympus blows away all competition. In terms of IBIS, the best in the world. In terms of size, terms of crop (wildlife photography) close up shots. People will say you cannot do landscapes and its poor. I have shot landscape and you need a lower mm lens to achieve the FF equivalent. I have used alot of cameras. Sony FF, Canon FF, Nikon and all I can say is the Olympus is the best camera that offers everything you need. And IBIS is not overrated, most of our shots are done handheld which is the most important. Who wants to carry a tripod or monopod. Olympus all the way! Even the colors are better than Sony. Sony is overrated and so is Canon.
Hello Andy. Awesome job buddy.. I’m about to order this camera soon.. your review made us so easy to make a decision..One question. What lens or lenses you use for those awesome pictures??
Tremendous, thank you. Why bother watching anyone else speaking about this camera? I’ve ordered it! I shoot rugby players. Would your training about it help me or is it wildlife specific?
Hey John thanks mate, there have been a fair few trolls replying to this so appreciate it. Yes the training would be the same as I am talking about the AF system in depth plus a lot of other little bits. If you are a wildbunch member it's this wednesday and discounted so remember thatr!
Hi, you say you got the shot at 3200 ISO. Was it really Noise free or did you post process. I had the OM1 in the field and like you I shoot a lot of wildlife. In particular a lot of birds under tree canopy. I shoot a lot at 4000 ISO and I found very little different between the OMD EM1 mk III and the OM1 I still had to post process in Topaz- In the field I do not think the claimed results are as good as seen in the studio.
If I have high ISO images 3200 and above I process through workspace first and foremost as it has the new AI noise engine and that works great. Yes it's not the best software in the world but the new AI engine is great and I have adapted my professional workflow to use it. Whether I use it at ISO 3200 depends on the light level, if it has a little noise I don't care as I like a little noise. But to say that the the ISO is no different from other cameras is frankly "having a laugh" as we would say in the UK, it is a different world.
I don't think Topaz can open the new files! Not even Photoshop (Adobe confirmed it accidentally can open the OM-1 files only). I use DXO Photolab and that cannot open the new OM-1 file.
According to other reviews its no better up to 800iso than the EM1mkiii and only noticeable noise improvement when shooting at 50 megapixel. Ill use the £2000 and get two more EM1's
Great review and very honest and fantastic pictures to illustrate a fantastic camera. I have the M1X, and will use it for some time to come - The AF is fine for most. It is great to know, though that Olympus (OM) are developing their cameras!
Simply inspirational Andy and makes waiting for my OM-1 all the harder (Hurry up WEX ffs! 😂). Your knowledge of your subject is top level too - Well done.
Right that’s quite obvious ? Not sure why you’d say that when I didn’t imply otherwise? And just so you know my keeper rate was extremely high and they’ve sold very well in the few months they’ve been out. So I did something right.
@@Wildmanrouse Oh its fantastic value. But it's what happens with all cameras and how I picked up a Lumix G9 for £599 about a year and a half after release 😁

sorry I only just saw this. I stick to the 8-25, 40-150 and 150-400 with occasional use of the 100-400 for stalking
Thank you! What a great camera! I'm getting one for sure although my em1 mkii is still very usable. I have a question: Can the new battery be charged with the blh1 battery charger? Thank you.
I don't think so no it's a different shape. I use a PD power pack so never have to worry
Thanks for sharing. Fantastic images.
You seem to set your ISO before taking the shots. What mode did you have the camera in?
I am guessing M or S.
I shoot native ISO too as the rest are just software interpolations in my view and it makes my life simpler!
Does om1 support procapture continous autofocus on lumix lenses?
I am not sure you may wanna ask someone at OMDS about that.
Think it should do you well although you should sign up for my training as it will help fill in some gaps!
What are you using for interpolation?
Photoshop.
So thanks for the nice interest but trust me you’d be disappointed!!!
ok but the images 10,000 iso comes from the camera as jpg or raw?
People tend to forget that Olympus is a fantastic camera, it offers way more than the FF counterpart. Yes maybe FF gives you little more dynamic range
better noise control at night. But that about it. Every other category the Olympus blows away all competition. In terms of IBIS, the best in the world.
In terms of size, terms of crop (wildlife photography) close up shots. People will say you cannot do landscapes and its poor. I have shot landscape
and you need a lower mm lens to achieve the FF equivalent. I have used alot of cameras. Sony FF, Canon FF, Nikon and all I can say is the Olympus
is the best camera that offers everything you need. And IBIS is not overrated, most of our shots are done handheld which is the most important.
Who wants to carry a tripod or monopod. Olympus all the way! Even the colors are better than Sony. Sony is overrated and so is Canon.
😀😀😀😀😀
Hello Andy. Awesome job buddy.. I’m about to order this camera soon.. your review made us so easy to make a decision..One question.
What lens or lenses you use for those awesome pictures??
Absolutely amazing shots and review. Thank you so much. Can i ask, what software do you use to upsize your cropped photos?
Photoshop!
I will be using Workspace . I don't think Topaz have got it right yet for the OM-1
I say what I did I don't lie. I shoot commercially so it counts what I do quality wise. I have no agenda to lie.
I use DXO Photolab and that cannot open the new OM-1 file.
but workspace does and as a Pro it is good enough quality for me
According to other reviews its no better up to 800iso than the EM1mkiii and only noticeable noise improvement when shooting at 50 megapixel. Ill use the £2000 and get two more EM1's
Then the reviews are SO wrong. I have used the OM1 for quite a long time.
And you'd be wasting 2k, sorry that you don't believe the truth of a pro review
Great review and very honest and fantastic pictures to illustrate a fantastic camera. I have the M1X, and will use it for some time to come - The AF is fine for most. It is great to know, though that Olympus (OM) are developing their cameras!
Glad it was helpful!
Simply inspirational Andy and makes waiting for my OM-1 all the harder (Hurry up WEX ffs! 😂). Your knowledge of your subject is top level too - Well done.
Thanks Roy well you'd better sign up to the training then my friend!
Thanks for your review. Birds move so fast, not all the images will be keepers regardless of the system you use.
Right that’s quite obvious ? Not sure why you’d say that when I didn’t imply otherwise? And just so you know my keeper rate was extremely high and they’ve sold very well in the few months they’ve been out. So I did something right.
I think I will wait a year or two and let you lot soak up the release £2k lol
Here that dumb lumix fangirl again. Will your G9 stop the war too ?
DFD for life 😆💩
@@Makta972 Bad workman always blames his tools haha
for what it does it is great value
@@Wildmanrouse Oh its fantastic value. But it's what happens with all cameras and how I picked up a Lumix G9 for £599 about a year and a half after release 😁
