I heard that after Norm gave this monologue, he was banned from hosting ever again. That was nine and a half years ago. Now he has actually just appeared in another Celebrity Jeopardy sketch. Not bad.
Artie Lange said that what Norm wanted to do, after the monologue was over, was just get in his car and leave without doing any of the sketches! It would have destroyed his career, but it would have been epic!
They are putting out entire seasons of SNL now (granted they are pretty expensive.) It could be a year or two before the 80s/90s are available, but I think they will be worth the wait.
More relevant today than ever. Norm is a prophet among men. From his departure, the show has gotten painfully unwatchable each week. The Anna Faris episode yesterday was brutal.
I think that NBC is one of those uber-serious companies when it comes to copyright infringement so whenever their stuff gets put up it immediately gets taken down. I suspect that this monologue has only lasted because there's no video and it's pretty "godamn" old.
@Dibrini oh fuck man, he should've did that... I remember watching this live and was half expecting him to just fuck up every sketch he was in purposefully and just freeze and stare at the audience saying nothing and have the cast members just squirming the whole time, haha
I remember I HAD to see this when it aired. I had stopped watchin SNL by then,,,,I think. Yea,,,,So-I just had to see it cuz it was NORMMMM!!....I cried when they fired him tho. Like a damn baby hehe
@CanadianGuitarist I think so. I probably googled it back when I answered the guy and that's what I found. Plus I think he got fired sometime in 98 and he says it's a year and a half later.
What's funny is that Norm was pretty accurate in saying how the show blew. SNL has suffered severely since his firing. They've had a few funny people on the show, but not nearly enough to really make it all that decent.
"So one minute you are firing me, the next you are asking me to return? Well you know what? FU, you guys suck!" Hell, his career wouldn't have been that much bigger if he had played nice and gone along with what they had scripted for him. If I can't have as big a career as the other guys, then the least I can do is go out in a blaze of Sour Grapes!
Classic monologue. The people of SNL fired him for being unfunny: so this means that people like Will Ferell and Jimmy Fallon are actually funny? Being fired is never good, but if I were Norm Macdonald, I would take this as a compliment for being good at what he does.
Not to mention the conglomerate Viacom which owns NBC sued RUclips because their videos were on RUclips. Okay, alright whatever. But guess this; they sued for an Austin Powers villain like total of 1 billion dollars.
I wonder who the people were that booed at around 2:49 when Norm joked that the show had gotten really bad. Were they people who worked on the show? I can't see why a regular audience member who boo at that joke.
Wait, why did I full screen this?
This is the greatest moment in SNL history
Possibly the best SNL opening ever.
greatest monologue ever from the greatest comedian.
"Alright guys we got a bad show for you tonight..." Hahaha, ahh Norm. So funny. Why doesnt anyone on the show laugh as hard as they should.
Brutally honest, completely without ego, sharp as a tack, funny as all hell... Norm is the man.
Superb. Thank you Norm, you don't know how much this cheers me up.
I heard that after Norm gave this monologue, he was banned from hosting ever again.

I would have loved to have seen Lorne Michaels' face during this monologue. Thanks for the awesome post!
great stuff as always
Norm, I didn't find you funny before, but after hearing this, you've delivered one of the funniest monologues in SNL history.
that was by far the funniest opening snl monologue i've ever heard
This was the best Monologue EVER !!!

I wasn't even aware this was linked to from ED; I just love Norm. Now I have to go searching the site for what pages links here.
Seeing Norm at Jukebox Comedy Club Sunday

he didnt get fired midway through 97-98, he left the show but he was fired from update by nbc west coast president don ohlmeyer on december 13, 1997
thank you thank you thank you for this
BALLS. HE'S GOT BALLS.
Artie Lange said that what Norm wanted to do, after the monologue was over, was just get in his car and leave without doing any of the sketches! It would have destroyed his career, but it would have been epic!
thanks for this.
"How did I suddenly get so goddam funny?!"
You've always been goddam funny, man!
Norm was awesome, I was like eight years old loving that shit.
I remember tuning in just to see him host and laughing my ass off when he did this.
Way to go norm!
Norm is awesome! Seeing him tomorrow night in Boston, 09/21/12!
Norm was great on Update. He's so unique. No wonder he does such a good Letterman impression, his style is like Dave's but still very much his own.
Norm was the only one worth watching when he was on there. He still funny as hell.
good god, hes so awesome
They are putting out entire seasons of SNL now (granted they are pretty expensive.) It could be a year or two before the 80s/90s are available, but I think they will be worth the wait.
Norm Macdonald on SNL was just brilliant.. besides Weekend Update, his spoofing of Larry King and Bob Dole was spot-on
Greatest SNL monologue evah.
Norm just became my new personal hero.
Norm, you sir are my hero.
we love you norm ,we love you!
legend...
Norm is my hero and possibly one of the greatest Canadians to grace t.v.
Norm doesn't take shit from anybody. He's the greatest.
o wow just brutal. only norm can burn bridges with such hilarity and ferocity, before he even crosses them.
Oh dear god, I nearly died listening to this. Norm is amazing.
Norm had a reputation of saying exactly what was on his mind and that didn't jive with to many people.
ah Norm, such biting bitterness laced with laughs,my hero
what an opportunity for revenge
EPIC
"So, yeah, I'm funny compared to - well, you'll see later...." lol Hilarious!
that was youtube's april fool's joke
Norm is brilliant.
Norm rules!
"How did I suddenly get so goddam funny?"
Norm's the man.
@theinstantvincent Did Norm's O.J. Joke at the ESPYs (when he was talking to Charles Woodson) have anything to do with his firing from SNL?
norm is the best!!!
Wasn't this monologue LAST MINUTE and SNL didn't know he was going to say this?? I heard that story somewhere...
Norm is so boss.
man, i wish he had done what he originally wanted, and just taken off after the monologue and screw them over completely, LOL!!!
@cowboyfromhell663 I wonder whether Lorne Michaels knew what Norm was going to say before Norm started the monologue...
More relevant today than ever. Norm is a prophet among men. From his departure, the show has gotten painfully unwatchable each week. The Anna Faris episode yesterday was brutal.
only about 7.9% according to Insight. a lot of people just love Norm Macdonald.
@kappagirl981 Thanks. Were they pissed off, or were they just joking around? I bet they were pissed off!
Im seeing Norm on Thursday, Fuck I cant wait. Norm is God.
I think that NBC is one of those uber-serious companies when it comes to copyright infringement so whenever their stuff gets put up it immediately gets taken down. I suspect that this monologue has only lasted because there's no video and it's pretty "godamn" old.
norm is hilarious
11 people are NBC managment
lol this man is hilarious! He should have never been fired from SNL!
@Dibrini
oh fuck man, he should've did that...
I remember watching this live and was half expecting him to just fuck up every sketch he was in purposefully and just freeze and stare at the audience saying nothing and have the cast members just squirming the whole time, haha

Is the full episode available on a torrent anywhere?
hahaha ahhh that's great.
@sbtbfanatic Try Hulu. I know that either a large portion or the entire episode is available there.
What's funny is that Norm was pretty accurate in saying how the show blew. SNL has suffered severely since his firing. They've had a few funny people on the show, but not nearly enough to really make it all that decent.
I wish there was more of his snl stuff posted, did it get taken down?
"Ok so lets recap..."
@sbtbfanatic norm said it was the writers in the back booing together haha
@RobTFirefly wow, fancy meeting me here.
i had to sign up to view a video and my annoyance shone through in my username.
October 23rd, 1999
? whoa everything is up side down
"affect"
Lmao. This is SNL
"So one minute you are firing me, the next you are asking me to return?
Well you know what? FU, you guys suck!"

i thought they just "fired" him from weekend update
You can hear some show lackeys trying to boo in the background when he says the show isn't funny
trolling IRL
ohhh
I just downloaded this mp3 from fakenews(dot)net and stuck a background on it.
And no problem.
ETHER
erm. what? i think that may be a problem with your browser.
@TheScientist0000000 I'm actually TheScientist0000000.
...or so the German's would have us believe.
lol.
Hilarity.
Lol
@fuckfuckfuck1 Is that right? That was a pretty quick return to hosting after being fired, wasn't it?
hmm? his reply was three days ago and mine was two days ago meaning i posted the day after he posted.
It's only slander if it's not true. :p
@RobTFirefly Are you THE rob t firefly?
@TheScientist0000000 Quite possibly. :-)
@sbtbfanatic i don't think so but if you're american you can watch it at hulu (200380/saturday-night-live-norm-macdonald)
@fuckfuckfuck1 I actually typed it before listening to the full clip; for some reason, I thought he was fired in late 98.
Not to mention the conglomerate Viacom which owns NBC sued RUclips because their videos were on RUclips. Okay, alright whatever. But guess this; they sued for an Austin Powers villain like total of 1 billion dollars.
