  • There's a new budget Holy Panda switch in town, and they deserve more love. The TECSEE Purple Pandas are a 5-pin, 68g switch that feel very close to Holy Pandas for more than half the cost. The housing is made out of PME, which is some kind of special blend, which gives the switch a more muted sound profile. There's also the Blue Velvet PME Tactile & Coffee Chip Ice Cream switches, which I haven't tried, but I'm willing to bet they're just recolors from reading the product descriptions.
    U4Ts are my #1 tactile switch, these are my #2. I find the downstroke on the U4Ts to be more satisfying, but Purple Pandas feels more like a Holy Panda vs the U4Ts.

    Just wanted to say, I ordered some Glorious Pandas a few weeks ago for my first custom build and made an impulse decision to return them to sender and order these instead after watching this video. 68 lubed switches later and I am incredibly happy with the decision; these feel quite smooth and have a really satisfying deep sound signature on my build. Thanks for recommending them!

    I'm a beginner in this hobby I got these as my first switch replacement in an RK 84 and my goodness were they an improvement on the stock browns the board came with. I haven't even lubed them (cause I haven't tried that ever) but I'm super satisfied, I can only imagine once I finally do lube them.

      Glad you like them, I’m enjoying them too. If you do decide to lube them, they sound even nicer, but be careful not to lube the legs or it diminishes the tactile feel too much, at which point you may as well have gotten linears. There are some good guides on the Internet and RUclips about how to lube tactile switches without overdoing it

    Tecsee have made some pretty good switches so far so with them gaining notoriety, i feel like the recent price increases are justified but still sad to see. Luckily i hopped on these before the lastest price hikes. I’m really looking forward to their latest release which I just preordered on bespoke keys, they’re the Diamonds for $6.95 per 10pk. I already have carrots and CCIC so i have faith in their ability to to make good switches.

    (Jk the price went back down, wonder if it'll stay)
    Unfortunately the price has increase on Aliexpress to about $.50 a switch ($0.43 a switch if you get 110). They're still great at that price, would choose them over Glorious Pandas & probably other Panda variants, but it's no longer at a banger deal.
    Holy Boba testing (with the 68g Purple Panda spring):
    Overall, Holy Bobas with Purple Panda stems felt stickier than the one with Halo stems. I'm guessing the purple panda stem is a bit thicker so it collides with the Boba housing more. One of the stem actually had some extra material left on the stem that's hard to remove, so it couldn't return for the upstroke at all. Halo stems are better for Holy Bobas.
    Zykos testing (with 67g zeal spring):
    I only have 2 Zeal v2 bottom housing, one clear Zealios v2, one Aqua zilents, and unfortunately the leaf on my aqua zilent bottom results in a better tactile feeling than the zealios one (which can be an issue with creating Zykos, in theory both bottoms should be the same). I tried both bottoms with both stems, and I managed to tell which one Zykos was the aqua zilent bottom both times. This doesn't mean I can say 100% you can use Purple Panda stems instead of Halo stems for Zykos, but both times the Zykos w/ aqua bottom felt like a strong tactile switch

    Just got these in yesterday, stuck them in my ghetto-ass modded pre-built. They feel fantastic. Maybe it's just my personal preference, but they both feel and sound amazing, especially for the 21 dollars you can snag them for. Very few switches even make it into that 30 c/switch category, especially not ones that I personally feel can compete with the big boys. If you're going for a build on a tight budget, and really want that nice tactile feel, you can't go wrong with these. Nice vid also.

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  3 года назад +1

      They definitely compete above their weight class! And that's a good call out about the 30 cent /switch. When you search for budget tactiles, you get recommendations for switches that costs 55 cent or more, which used to be budget, but that's pretty much the status quo these days. These are truly budget, and perform very well.

    A bit late to the show but I’ve just got these for my second keyboard. I wouldn’t really agree these can replace GPs since imo they feel significantly different. These have noticeably less tactility. These also have less travel and they sound deeper lubed (compared to lubed GPs). Even though I prefer GPs and ping isnt an issue at all for me (btw GPs have way less ping than eg a much more expensive sunflowers that I have in another build) I will still be using these but might swap springs to two stage springs.

  • @jaebberwock
    @jaebberwock 3 года назад +2

    I bought these on your recommendation from Aliexpress - I'm 50/50 on these. Nice when they work but poor quality/finish for the 62 gram ones. All of them have unfinished plastic flakes inside that are still stuck to the housing. They will most likely flake off in time but difficult to remove, you'd have to go in there with a tweezer. I've lost 4 switches out of 35. They were just unacceptably scratchy when lubed/filmed, and put back together. Also, the little flakes makes putting on the film the most difficult to get on of any switch I've filmed so far. The film catches on the plastic pendant pieces and you have to wrangle it in. I bought 90 switches - not confident I'll have enough left over after the lubing process to fill a 75%.
    Once you get to the lubed and filmed point, I will say it feels and sounds really nice. Prefer it over my pewters/gat browns/cap browns/tealios. I haven't tried any Pandas and my U4Ts haven't come in yet but these are my favorite tactiles. However, it is almost certain that the inside of the switch will get contaminated over time, not sure how that will affect the smoothness of the switch.
    If you gonna buy, buy more extras than you would normally. I'd say 100 for a 75% board to be safe - especially if it's coming from a slow boat from China.

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  3 года назад

      Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it seems like the quality control on these isn't great, I didn't have the issues you mentioned. I'm starting to realize switch quality control is a somewhat common problem from reading other people's experiences, even for the Bobas.

    Hmm... I'm researching mechanical keyboards right now. I'll probably be getting a new keyboard within the next two weeks. It's insane how many customization options there are for mechanical keyboards. It's hard to tell what's important and what's not. So many reviews basically just focus on the sound the keyboard makes... very rarely do they even go over performance which astounds me. Many people wear headphones while on the computer anyway, so why would they care so much about sound?
    For me... I'm interested in performance and price. The Tecsee Purple Pandas and Sapphires seem to be the two most realistic options. I have no idea what type of switch I'll actually like, because I've never tried them, but they're both relatively cheap and get ranked A or B from what I've seen. I assume I want tactile... my main focus is typing > gaming. However I don't want clicky, I'm not a fan of very loud keyboards. I haven't really seen any real reason why you would want a louder keyboard for typing either. It's almost like a majority of this industry is just mentality and sound preferences. All I'm interested is in getting a better workflow.
    I'm also confused as to whether I should try to build my own, buy a keyboard, or customize. Soldering is not an option which means I'd need a hot swappable. For instance I could buy a Drop ALT 65% mechanical keyboard for $200 new. However all the switch options are pretty bad. All basically C to F tier. I can buy the barebones for $150 new. Now I can get it used for $98 or I can get the entire keyboard used for like $105/$115. Then I just get 67 purple pandas for like under $30. So for $130-145 I can literally buy it cheaper than building it my own. I could also buy the barebones... but I feel like I'd need to buy like padding and other things too. Not sure if it'd be cheaper overall (more research).
    For some reason building your own seems far more expensive than just buying a decent mechanical keyboard, that's hot swappable, and simply changing the switches. Very odd. It's the reverse when building a computer. Maybe I'm wrong... I've only been researching for a few hours.

    Just to clarify, previously some people claimed the Coffee Chip Ice cream switch is just a recolor of purple panda...it's not true. I finally bought 2 packs of 110ct purple panda. Stock, the coffee chip ice cream feels smoother and no leaf ping. The purple panda has similar tactile feel so I am guessing lubing can help reduce the leaf ping and improve on smoothness. Anyway just want to share my finding in case anyone is wondering.

      @@SomethingAzn i did some more testing today since i was building zykos as well. i tried out several purple panda stems, and they all felt..more sticky than the halo stem. one of the stem actually could not return for the upstroke at all because there was some extra material left on the stem. im guessing the purple panda stem is a bit larger than the halo stem, and can barely fit into the switch, so yeah halo stems are probably better than digging through purple panda stems. they work pretty well for zykos tho.

    • @jimmynguyen973
      @jimmynguyen973  3 года назад

      I'm not sure what you mean, the mic is definitely not upside down, but also the orientation shouldn't matter as long as you're speaking into the capsule

    • @logicphile6207
      @logicphile6207 3 года назад

      @@jimmynguyen973 Incorrect. The mic is DEFINITELY upside down and orientation DOES matter. When the body of a microphone is at the bottom that allows heat to rise and, thus, change the tonality of the condenser mic. You may not think it's a massive difference, but it is existent, like it or not. Moreover, with the body of the microphone flipped and angled upward, your voice will have a touch more range as your neck will be angled slightly upwards (which also has an effect on plosives).
      Even room temperature and humidity can affect the sound of a microphone, which is why engineers sometimes "hotbox" microphones, even if that particular type doesn't need to warm up. Recording engineers like hanging microphones as I've described for good reason.

      @jimmynguyen973  3 года назад +2

      @@logicphile6207 It sounds like what you mean is the microphone isn't upside down, but it should be because of the heat issue that you mentioned. Another way to put it: the correct orientation is for the mic to be upside down.
      But from what I understand, this is an issue with older tube mics and isn't an issue with modern mics. I'll look into it more later, but I'm honestly not too worried about it for RUclips purposes

    • @logicphile6207
      @logicphile6207 3 года назад +2

      @@jimmynguyen973 If you want to phrase it like that, sure, so long as you understand my point: the orientation inverse of what you have would be beneficial.
      What you understand is correct & incorrect: modern microphones generate less heat, yes, but they still generate heat. Also see the throat angle changing the range of your voice.
      Like I said, recording artists change the orientation still for a reason, but if I had to pay even $20 to change my mic orientation, I wouldn't because the cost/benefit isn't worth it. For free, though, that's an easy "Yes" from me.

      since i used both stems on both housings and was able to tell which one was the aqua housing both times, im inferring that the 2 stems are similar and purple panda stems can be used for zykos, but i cant say with 100% certainty.
