Putting on a crinolinedress

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 24 фев 2011
  • Edit: did you know I make sewing patterns now?
    www.makerist.c...
    Here I do show how to put on my new 1860s crinolinedress.
    I have made it all myself (I'm a dressmaker and specialized on historical costume, my homepage is
    www.au-trait-galant.de - sorry in German only)
    The pattern of the dress is 100% period.
    The solution with the petticoat is NOT authentic. It has an elastic and is coverd with ruffles of petticoatnylon.

      Not really this kind of dressing was really easy. The only tiresome thing was the millions of buttons. But ever since the development of zips I think we would be fine dressing without help.

    (I didn't have this video recommended to me. I was looking for underskirt ideas....this was a bit more than I hoped!)
    So that is why dresses cost so much: yards and yards if material!!! Beautiful 😍 design. I would like to wear one for a day and feel like I have my own space and be all over the top for fun :D

    A crinoline is the ruffled over skirt, or historically a stiffened petticoat. The first thing you put on (which you were calling a crinoline) is a hoopskirt. So everyone please - a layered fabric petticoat is a crinoline. Thank you, and amazing job on making your outfit -it's beautifully done.

    Where's the timeline where everyone, both men and women were issued with dresses like these that they're required to wear whenever they're in public as a measure of forcing social distancing? Also has the added bonus of preventing people from leaving the house unnecessarily now that we live in an era where convenience is paramount and having to put all that on every time one wants to go out would soon see most people limit their outings to essential travel only.

    I think corsets are quite comfortable. But I must add, that I don't do tight lacing, I only reduce my waist about 2" sometimes up to 4" but never more. So breathing in a moderately laced corset is no problem at all.

    • @jorgevilla32
      @jorgevilla32 4 года назад

      Please be much more careful not to overtighten your corset when you wear it just like that.

    Props for wearing a petticoat over the hoopskirt - because seeing the hoop's bones isn't the best look out there...
    But you look fantastic.

    Back in the day of this style of clothing, doors were much wider as a rule. Otherwise you lift up one side of outfit (slightly) and press in a little on the other side. Most hoops/crinolines weren't that wide for day use. Party/ball gowns had the wider widths. My wife has 5 different sizes and all, but one are made the old fashion way....no solid fabric....open with hoop part attached to straps joined at the top.

    I'd love a crinoline dress but where would you wear it without feeling too much out of place? Also, I was told to avoid open fires and flames of any kind, as the crinoline burns well and tends to roast the occupant on the inside before she can escape.

    EASIER WAY.... layer all 3 before you step in. If string waist bands on both slips line them up in front, if zipper on either line it up to your back. Slip #2 lays on top of #1, fluff and distribute evenly all the way around. Place dress to zip in back, evenly distribute dress over slips. If wearing boots put them on, if pumps, leave them off. Step into opening, this is when I kneel down, if both slips have drawstring, first, pull up hoop slip #1, tie firmly in front. Slip #2, pull up over #1 draw string snugly in front also. If zipper waist, line it up with dress zipper back. Put arms into dress, adjust, zip, (slip #2) then Dress. As you stand, dress and slip #2 will fall evenly, as hoops from #1 expand. Step into your glass slippers and head to the ball, carefree without twisting and struggling, your ready to go!

    For anyone wondering how they went to the restroom back in that era, there was a slit in the pantaloons and when you sat down on a toilet of that era , you sat on it reversed, facing inward where you could lift your skirts , sit on the toilet ( they had special ladies toilet not outhouses in some grand houses )

    I've already made a crinoline with an elliptical cage, and I was wondering something about your ruffled petticoat :) How many meters/yards were used to make this? Which fabric did you use? It doesn't seem very heavy (whicch is really a good thing haha)! My next crinoline seems to have almost the same proportions (size/shape of the cage) so I was wondering about how many meters I'll have to buy to make such a petticoat :) My elliptical one wasn't ruffled. Thanks a lot and congrats for your work!

    Dear Cécile du Jard I hope this is not to rude to ask of you! What is the circumference of each row of your crinoline pattern if I may ask? And the distance between each row of the steel boning? Because I’m 5’8 and would love to make one for myself. Plus how much yards of fabric did you use to make your Crinoline and Petticoat. I’m a size 16. Hope to hear from you.
    Sincerely,
    Cin 😊

    Question! How on earth did they go to the toilet?in their case the chamber pot? seriously, ever thought of it? did they undress and dress again? somebody(maid) slip the pottie under the skirts and hope the lady aims well????

      amalialovesicecream I dress this way every day. When outdoors I wear crotchless pantaloons. Otherwise I wear diapers or more often Tena Lady Super.

      Elizabeth Marsdon What a coincidence, so do I! Except I just wear suntan pantyhose when outdoors and the heavy protection, comfort fit, Super Plus the rest of the time, along with an overnight maxi. I sure take a ribbing from some of the boys at school for doing it though, especially the football jocks. They can't understand why I enjoy it so much. I just tell them: "Hey, some guys like football and others period crossdress. Get over it."

    Wow this dress is so wide and the hoopskirt is huge but its a little inaccurate of the of the Victorian era or the American civil war period their skirts weren't so wide as this woman is wearing they wore more of bell shaped skirts but not even near wide as she is wearing probably the girl got inspired by the Victorian magazines they had at the time like Punch where this magazine was written mostly by males because they were against of women wearing it so they drawn all this bizarre drawings of accidents of women of what could happened to them if they continued wearing hoopskirts so their drawings were exaggerated like the dress she is wearing

      +KRocker F Several paintings of that age were indeed exaggerated, but crinolines as wide as the one she wear nonetheless existed...

    • @leababy77
      @leababy77 8 лет назад +9

      At the widest, hoopskirts were 5.5 to 6 yards in circumference, and generally used three times that in the fabric for the actual gowns. The bell shape was during the 1840's and early 1850's and was first achieved with a multitude of petticoats and then a crinoline petticoat which was made of horsehair, then artificial crinoline with actual hoops inside was introduced in the 1850s.
