I like how most of the OST is variations of a single track, mostly STORM. Some call it lazy, but I think for a shorter game like this, it works nicely. It feels like a neat package of military grade tracks meshed together to make it seem like Adrian's going through similar, equally intense situations with the battle drums serving as a call to action.
It's easy for people to call things 'lazy' and not look into the deeper meaning of it. OpFor soundtracks are predictable, methodical, calculated, and represent relative composure, just like a trained soldier in a situation like this. Gordon is more unpredictable, as he is just an average guy forced to deal with all of this, hence his soundtracks being more hectic. I think both soundtracks from Half-Life and OpFor are fantastic in their own ways. And if people don't believe that Gearbox would pay attention to something like this - watch Adrian's weapon animations when he shoots them. Significantly better recoil management than Gordon, indicative of actual soldier training.
@Alex I feel like this is the best way to describe their experiences, Adrian's is kind of predictable because his mission is to keep the situation under control and maintain the Aliens, so he of course runs into them, and once he finds out the Black Ops are out after the HECU, he expects the HECU to be on his tail attacking him, while Gordon doesn't know when he'll encounter the HECU, he didn’t know about the Aliens, and he ends up finding himself in Xen
Opposing Force is a game of military infraction in the Half Life story, the music is like that because it refers to threatening situations or likely PTSD.
The military thematics remind me of how a soldier trained for this would react. There's the beat of combat but a layer of unpredictability and reaction, whereas Gordon is kinda more the everyman and his music reflects the environment more
One thing I like about this games ost is that it has a sort of neutral feel to it? Most games soundtracks seem to feel like they're amping you up. Like they're trying to communicate that you're gonna kill the enemy or whatever. This music is just sort of frantic and pressured.
Sometimes in opposing force, it starts when your not killing an enemy, as an example, storm starts off when gman locks you in the tunnel so you can leave black mesa. only after do enemies begin to attack
Black Ops: Why Do We Have To Clean Up This Mess That Grunts Can't Handle Shepard In Vent Sneaking Up on Them With an MP5 About To Shoot a Grenade: WAZZUP BITCHEZZZ
I was fighting some Black Ops to this music, and one of the female ones ran out right next one of my squadmates. He had the SAW, and hit her twice in the stomach; she got taken down instantly. It was cool.
The OST being variants of the same track is actually pretty thematic. Adrian is a trained soldier, and despite the fact that he's fighting against aliens, zombies and other threats he's never ever faced, he's keeping a level head. HL1, Gordon is a physicist. He's only used firearms as part of the hazard course. Adrian knew the risks when he joined the HECU. Gordon thought this would be a normal day.
This music works really well if you're moving from point a to point b but there are a lot off hostiles inbetween trying to kill you and you have to fight your way through

The silent protagonist. Barney Calhoun, Adrian Shepard, & Gordon Freeman are all the great heros aswell as all other hazardous environmental combat units.
