Swatch Group for a good reason decided to leave the world watch and jewelry show and to create an own format how to present its novelties. Today is the 28th of May 2019 and two weeks ago I have been spending three days in Switzerland to finally discover the novelties of the luxury brands of Swatch Group. Among them of course Jaquet Droz!

Jaquet Droz Magic Lotus Automaton - a ticking Zen garden
Jaquet Droz says: "Some watches tell time. Some tell a story." So true!
Four flowers represent the four seasons or, for some, the stages of a life. A mother-of-pearl button at 3 o’clock symbolizes the unopened Lotus bud. In relief upon a corolla of gold petals, it evokes the first season: spring. To its left, a Lotus flower in full bloom symbolizes summer. This simple miniature incorporates a number of Jaquet Droz decorative techniques. The petals are carved from mother-of-pearl, and finished with a thin coat of translucent paint that accentuates the relief. At its heart a yellow sapphire with gold prongs represents the pistil and stamens, poised to fly away and give life in turn to new Lotus flowers. By its side, a Lotus flower fallen onto the water represents the third season, fall, carried away by the current. Finally, winter is marked at 6 o'clock by the seed pod of the aquatic plant. In this season the pod sinks to the bottom of the water to be naturally buried, thus protecting the precious seeds that will foster new Lotus flowers the following spring. Jaquet Droz sets the pod with seven diamonds that represent the seeds - visible symbols of the life glittering within.
The Jaquet Droz Magic Lotus Automaton measures 43 mm in diameter and is available in a choice of red gold or white gold (limited series of 28 pieces of each). Turning over the timepiece, the bridges and oscillating weight are hand-engraved with exclusive naturalist motifs, with carp and Lotus flowers echoing the carvings on the dial side. The non-engraved elements on the movement are also decorated (circular graining, drawn strokes) and chamfered by hand. This new automaton is the subject of four patents pending. It features the most sophisticated dial ever produced by Jaquet Droz. The movement contains more than 500 components. The development phase alone took over three years.

This watch perfectly represents the point where art and engineering meets. It shows that engineers can do the impossible and break the limits by producing such a complex mechanical watch that is also stunning to look at. Do not downplay this. It is not meant to be understood by everyone.

Why should it? Everyone can wear such a piece of art I would say...
so the fish moves for max 4 min? other times it just shows the time in static form?
If you don't activate the scene the watch always shows the time - yes....
i wish the lotus flower will get Pink color which is color of happy and strong life symbol instead white color symbol of pure or funeral. This is amazing watch, i really like this 99% just 1% left for color of lotus, that's it.

A bit kitschy and with motives clearly targeting Asian markets, but mesmerizing nonetheless.
Of course Asian markets are targeted... Interesting mind-game could be what to display and animate on such a watch for the European an/or US market... What would you propose?
@@WatchAdvisor I think European culture is too rich for me to suggest something specific. Greek or Roman mythology, Shakespearian plays, Andersen/Grimm tales etc There's a lot of themes to explore.
Roadjull I think the problem here in Europe would be that there are so many different cultures only some hundred kilometers side by side. So what should you choose? If it French the Brits and German wouldn’t like it and so on and so on... Your ideas anyhow where brilliant. Thanks for sharing!
I also think it's a bit too crowded, but it's understandable considering Pierre Jaquet-Droz was renowned for making automaton. Plus JD have been making watches for Chinese Emperor and official since 18th century.
I rather use the same price to buy 1PP, 1 AP and 1RM.

It's a piece of beautifully designed and intricately executed in engineering on a tiny scale - if you want practicality, you can get a Casio digital watch for $5 on Amazon.
@@harrymartin684 well I would choose the casio digital because it will tell the time more accurately than the JD that's what watches are made for but maybe I'm totally wrong.
@@dynamodel I wouldn't say you're totally wrong, the Casio would be far more reliable and a more accurate timepiece, but I would say you're missing the point of a watch like this completely.
@@harrymartin684 For me a watch like this is a pointless exercise. If it was the most accurate mechanical watch ever made and beautifully done well that's different. I'm sure if you ordered a beautiful boat from a manufacturer but it didn't float you wouldn't see the point in it pretty much the same with my point of view on watches that can't keep time accurately. What's the point?.
