The last scene with the Joel Ellie flashback absolutely had me in tears. The dialogue is so perfectly written and it talks about how Ellie feels about the meaning of her life being ripped away from her. It’s the first time I’ve full on cried at a game and I wish the game could’ve ended with that scene.

This is the absolute best review on this game that I have seen. You´re totally fair to the game, pointing out the reason why you like the game but more important acknowledge the flaws about game and still stick with your opinions. As you said this game might age well and people might appriciate it later no matter if you like it or not, this game is going to turn out to be a game we all remember beacuse it took risks and didn't follow the safe "hollywood story" route. I'm still effected by this game emotianally and it has made me feel something and that is the reason I play videogames, no matter if I agree with the game developers or not about the game.

I went into this game completely blind. I only saw the original gameplay/dance scene trailer. I avoided all of the drama/politics, and just locked myself away for 3 days and played the game. And without a doubt, it was the best gaming experience I've arguably ever had (Even more so than the first, but also due to the first). I feel far too many people went in with this unfair bias of wanting to hate the game. Like the review bombing started the second people could review the game on metacritic. Every criticism I've seen so far I just think "..That's the point! It was intentional!". If this game is "bad writing" then so is any classic book that kills off a great character in a messed up way.

I've already seen a lot of people comment about, "finally, something that doesn't just blindly hate on this game" and I just wanted to give my thoughts on that so I could hopefully encourage some nice, civil conversations in the comments section, so here we go. I really only hint a TINY bit at spoilers, but if you wanna go in entirely blind without ANY hints, no matter how small, do not read this comment.

So, I hated the game. But I know that some people loved it, and some people hated it, and I feel like this game will be a very polarizing game for a long time. Over time, I've softened on the game a bit, but for very personal, subjective reasons, I found the game's story to be a punch in the gut, heart and soul that left me feeling empty and like Joel and Ellie's relationship never mattered in the end. It seriously messed with me emotionally because of what the first game meant to me.
But if you love the game... I'm so glad you did. Because even though I hate the game, it is not my job to ruin the enjoyment of the game for other people. If you loved the game, I'm so glad you were able to enjoy a game that I wasn't. That being said, those that love the game, it is ok to hate this game. People who hate this game, it is ok to love this game. Not everyone hating on the game is hating it out of blind hatred, and not everyone is loving the game out of blind fanboyism. It is ok to disagree on this game. If you love this game, I am so, so happy that you were able to enjoy an experience that I wasn't. If you hate it, I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy it, but I'm glad we can agree on some things.
Please, feel free to discuss opinions down below in a civil and respectful manner if you wish.

@Alessandro Silvestri Koufis To be fair, Joel is NOT comfortable in that scene at all.
The second Tommy, who has lived in a town that survives by trading with travellers in large part, for decades, opens his mouth, Joel knows he fucked up. But it's too late, they are there and they are surrounded and they already gave their names away earlier to Abby so it's too late to lie.
He lets his guard down but not nearly as much as his brother.

@Alessandro Silvestri Koufis I've thought about it like this... spending four years in a settlement where you meet a new stranger nearly every single day is gonna change how you see strangers. Hell, when they moved in to Jackson, everyone but Tommy and his wife were strangers. Eventually, when all you do is either bond with them strangers or trade with passing strangers for four years straight, you're gonna experience a change in yourself on how you perceive people.

I also understand why people didn’t. I feel like the biggest complaint was this devalued Joel and Ellie’s relationship, which I understood at first. I thought it made Joel seem like an awkward step dad that somehow got custody over the mom. But after playing through all of Ellie’s memories and especially that one scene with the two of them in the porch, i think it did their relationship justice. This was a perfect summation of the game, it's plot, it's theming and it's context. I think the story and its characters are complex, which is why the original has, and this game will hold up for a long time. part of me feels that if the leaks weren’t ever released there would be more love for this game. i did EVERYTHING in me to push all of that info away and it worked. i went into the game completely blind, nothing about it felt like it betrayed my experience with the first game. what i like about the last of us compared to other post apocalyptic games is that it’s grounded in reality. with that, i love that they never tried to make joel into some unkillable, god-like character. they’ve been in jackson for years so it’s given that joel’s guard was down for a while before hand. i don’t see the way joel behaved was out of character, and even if he were to be on edge during this scene it would’ve still ended the same way, it was 2 on 7 in a tiny ass room. that being an issue that most people are having is with the way joel goes out, it’s what reality is. it isn’t fair, it isn’t right but that’s how it goes. i could go on and on about how this story isn’t as bad as people are making it out to be. this is nowhere near as great as the first one but that’s doesn’t mean we can discredit what it’s trying to do. naughty dog never knew that the last of us would sit with as many people as it did, there’s no way in topping that. could there have been a better sequel to this story, possibly. but i think this game will be one of those hidden gems that people will grow to love over time

This game is the perfect extension of all the things that made the first game great, but it goes the extra mile to not just offer us a moral dilemma, but to show us a path to absolution. As you said, it is bittersweet, for all the tragedy Ellie goes through, she is shown how to rebuild, how to heal and how to forgive.

@TLOU2 is GOTY in 2020 Not only is it related to tribalism, the story mirrors what’s happening in real life almost perfectly.
STORY: You meet Abby as the villain. Your impression of her is pretty much set. Then you get to see through her eyes and need to re-evaluate your own stance on things. Some people can, some can not.
REAL LIFE: You get to see a new enemy on the horizon in the form of „woke video game narratives“ 🙄 via the leaks. This first bad impression festers within you. Then the game comes out. You now see (or should at least), that much of what was in the leaks, was with very little context and much was just flat out wrong. Now you could re-evaluate your perceptions of the game, examine it for what it is. Some could, some could not.
The underlying mechanism in both scenarios would be called „confirmation bias“, which basically just means, that we tend to seek out information, which already supports our preexisting perceptions of how things are.
It is my belief, that the game would have had a much wider appeal, if the leaks would never have happened. Still not everybody would like it, but if you already spent so much time hating on a game before it even comes out, there‘s almost no coming back from this. Just like when you get told your entire life, that the WLF or the scars or the Fireflies are the enemy...

It’s not a bitter sweet ending. Ellie is left with nothing. She loses Dina, and her adoptive son, she loses her fingers so she can’t play guitar, she’s permanently traumatised, she’s lost her relationship with the town of Jackson as both Dina and Tommy hate her, she loses Joel, she loses Jessie, she even loses her horse. This entire game is nothing but watching a fan favourite character be tortured. Ellie is 16 in the game (I could be wrong). Regardless, she’s extremely young, and by the end of it she’s caused a damn genocide, and still hasn’t gotten her revenge. She instead chooses to take the moral high ground over a psychopathic antagonist who gets to walk away and have a future with the fireflys. Whilst she gets to rot in the enteral hellsnape that is her mind, suffering from trauma and guilt. She’s a broken person and I felt no sense of a bitter sweet ending. There’s sympathetic Abby you play as for 5 mins when she loses her dad, but then there’s also the sadist Abby who smashes dinas face in and you press square on multiple times to choke out Ellie. This entire game is a punching bag with Ellie’s face. I hate this game, it tells a bold and decisive story yes, but it left me feeling not an inch of hope for the characters I love, Everyone’s either personality traumatised or scared, or just dead. She's not left with nothing. Materially, yes. But she can now live with herself. She wasn't going to be able to live with Dina, before she learned to live with herself. That's what her journey is about - closure with Joel and with herself. The rage at Abby and WLF is real too, but it's mostly a distraction from her internal rage.
That's the reason she lets Abby go. It isn't the dumb "rEvEngE iS bAd" meme idiots keep repeating. She has that specific memory of Joel on the porch, where she says, "I would like to try" and that's the closest she'll ever get to having a resolution with Joel. They were essentially estranged, and their relationship was never fully repaired when he was taken away, and she realizes it never will be. She already had what she was looking for, and killing Abby won't make it better.
Neither Ellie nor Abby are psychopaths, nor was Joel or Marlene or anyone else. They're just people. They do terrible things, but often for justifiable reasons. The game is about making you understand why people take revenge, and then saying maybe revenge isn't really what you're after. It's easy to mistake that for saying revenge is never the answer, but the game is not actually saying that. It's just saying revenge is relatable.
So in the end, Ellie is heartbroken and damaged, but she's not a lost soul. She finally has herself. When Joel tells her that Dina would be lucky to have her, he's also telling her she's lucky to have herself. She would never have gotten that lesson if the game had ended at the farmhouse (unless she finds a psychotherapist.)

Chris Bellamy can’t accept this game because it’s a post apocalypse? Dude the first game is also post apocalypse and ends bitter sweet but hopeful for Joel and Ellie being alive. There’s no “the world doesn’t care bro” it’s a story that naughty dog can write. And they chose to go for gut lunch after gut punch on Ellie. She doesn’t grow and change over the game she just get traumatised and depressed, it offers nothing. It’s like John wick never got revenge for his dog, didnt get a new dog, and didn’t kill the Russian prick.

I’ve watched this video twice, when you first published and now, and it further reveals what you said at the end, that I think the game will age very, very well as people continue to unpack it. I felt alone in my initial love of it, so hearing your words then let me know that I wasn’t crazy, that the layers and nuance I felt weren’t fabricated in my mind.
Now, having played through several times - it’s a profound and exhilarating experience. It improves through subsequent plays in all aspects, compartmentalized into extraordinary gameplay on one hand and this complex narrative on the other.
Watching this again now, I’m fascinated to learn what time has done for your perspectives and discoveries compared to your initial take, too. You had several lines about Ellie, her happiness, her dilemma between preserving her family with Dina and her crusade, that I’ve actually come to disagree with. I thought the same at first, too. Now, though, Ellie’s through line is so clear and consistent to me that it brought me to a very unpopular opinion that she was never 100% invested in the life and relationship with Dina. There was love there, but not true, till death do we part love. Her actions and reactions to her companions after Joel’s death show again and again her desire to be alone, her longing for a hunt and adventure.
I need to listen to a spoilercast with Ashley Johnson again to get her exact quote, but she brilliantly laid out the reality of Ellie and Dina’s relationship. It was something like, this is a college romance, Ellie’s first adult relationship, and nobody knows what they’re doing or why at that age in a normal world. You stumble through, and when it ends it may end badly, but you learn and move on. I’ve seen comments about who leaves whom, who’s to blame, they’re meant to be together, etc. It simply isn’t true for Ellie.
I hope to create video essays on my reflections on Ellie’s consistent through line and Abby’s. The two halves tell remarkable stories of these young women fighting their way through this horrible landscape and emerging stripped but with their humanity intact.
It’s brilliant, it’s haunting, it’s complex, and it will stay with me for the rest of my days.

Personally I found myself unable to forgive Abby, but I realise now that I didn't try to or want to, in fact I intentionally closed myself to that possibility as soon as she killed Joel and refused to sympathise with her from then on. However I do believe that I could have potentially been more likely to sympathise with Abby if they had made us see her perspective before she killed Joel then I wouldn't have been so closed to her.

But unfortunately most people saw the leaks and made up their minds going into the game intentionally wanting to hate it or they didn't and they saw Joel die and didn't want to try to understand Abby's motivation. I'm going to leave here links of reviews best reviews that don't talk shit about the game so you can understand more about the story , I'm also I'm going to leave this here :
      By Cynical Idealist
The hatred that Ellie feels for Abby is an externalized reflection of the hatred Ellie harbors for herself. Why?
Well Joel deeply hurt both Abby and Ellie in different ways and they both punished him for it. Ellie hates Abby for torturing Joel to death, especially because she didn't get a chance to restore her relationship with Joel. This is a mirror because Ellie also tortured Joel, she did it for years but in a different way, and I'd say in a way that was more painful for Joel, and that was by disconnecting from him. She hates herself for torturing him like that and not restoring their relationship when there was still time. That's the real pain she has been trying to avoid facing during this entire revenge quest, she's like a drug addict using revenge to avoid dealing with those painful feelings of regret. This is the realization she has while she is drowning Abby when she has the flashback to the scene on the porch with Joel and chooses to Spare Abby. She's not just forgiving Abby, she's really most importantly forgiving herself and finally coming to terms with what happened between her and Joel, I think her leaving his guitar to rest in the house and walking away is supposed to symbolically represent that she has forgiven Joel, made peace with what happened between them and is finally ready to move on and start a new life. I hated the end at first but after much deliberation I think it's actually really poetic, People saying the game is just about "revenge is bad" I think have really missed the point.

@Megatron EX1127 the reeason why he says its a "cheap reveng plotline" is becasue how inconsisten they were with joel and tommys characters. they would of never just join a random and follow her to her base where her other friends are. that in itself felt forced. secondly they made it clear that this game has to protagonists abby and ellie "no one is a bad guy" right. except for the fact that abby was blatantly evil which mad it impossible to sympathize with why she killed joel. neil himself was wrong about his story its more of a "no one is a bad guy" and "forgiveness" and less about revenge through and through. for the ending to work you are supposed to feel some sort of sympathy for abby but there is non there as she mercilessly tortured and murdered a man who saved her multiple times just because he saved a girl that her father was going to sacrifice for the greater good of humanity. ultimately the story does and doesnt work depending on how you interpret things but imo they couldve done the story much better. and i also respect your opinion and i agree on the ellie forgiving e=joel stuff they had a great idea but just didnt deliver, and poor ellie they took a fat shit on her, she lost everything and then proceeds to save and let her last possible victory roam freely because "revenge bad" but not wrong. this is just a very divisive game so we shouldnt do anything but respect others opinions.

Especially in the end where her last memory with Joel is what stops her from going farther down the road of anger and vengence, killing abby.

Also, can we give a shout out to the role music plays in this story, the dual score between Gustavo and Mac, and the pitch-perfect song choices? Gah. So good.
I created a TLOU2 playlist in my Amazon Music including:
Three Crooked Still songs. “Ecstasy” is the kiss scene dance song that Ellie also starts to play before that flashback. I can’t get enough of it. Just perfectly hits the melancholy of Ellie with notes of optimism. It reminds me a lot of the main “The Last of Us” theme.
“The Winding Sheet” by Mark Lanegan is the tape Owen leaves playing in the aquarium when Abby arrives, before she finds him in the boat. Good lord that’s an amazing pick for where his brain is. He’s tortured.
And The Black Angels song “Young Men Dead,” which was one of my favorite music-moment-setting-purpose picks of all time. It’s the Zeppelin/Doors-esque song that’s playing in the final Rattler area by the pools. It is exactly what they’d be playing and launched that moment into a Heart of Darkness, Apocalypse Now stratosphere.

Post writing note: I wrote an essay here by accident, so feel free to skip if you don’t have the time. Short version, I love the vid but disagree on some major points, mainly about Abby.
I think that the idea of Abby and you going along with her journey is amazing. But their execution of it just didn’t hit at all for me. And I have tried to really see Abby and sympathize with her, but I can’t. Not because she killed Joel, but because of the way they presented her.
I believe that Abby is a cold blooded psychopath, through and through. Throughout the whole game, at least to my recollection, she never shows any signs of regret. Not one. And I think you show her too much grace on that subject.
You defend her hunting down Joel, halfway across the country mind you. Because she saw his dead body and knows it’s Joel. She wasn’t forced to watch as he sliced his neck open and bleed to death, like Ellie saw Abby beat the shit out of Joel. No, she just saw his body. Meanwhile Ellie sees her adoptive father beat to death and then swears revenge. Ellie’s quest for vengeance is justified, Abby’s isn’t.
You then try to defend her wanting to murder Dina, while knowing that she’s pregnant, because she believes that Ellie killed Mel and Owen knowing Mel is pregnant. And while I do get this point, I disagree and actually think that it supports my point in that she’s psychotic. To want to murder Dina because of Ellie is totally a reasonable response in this kind of world. But then to know that Dina is pregnant and still she comes close to doing it, is evil. I don’t care how much rage and hatred you have, that is evil. And if Ellie were to do that, I would’ve said the same thing.
Final thing, the symbolism you talked about in the ending changed my view on it. I still really don’t like it, but the more I think about the symbolism, the more I gotta agree with you in it. And the part about the revenge costing Ellie everything, I also agree with.
But my huge gripe that you didn’t touch on is that Abby got off relatively great. Sure, her friends died and she was stuck on a post. But she now has the fireflies to go to, a new family that she had been searching for this whole time, she can now have. Her dreams were realized. Meanwhile Ellie has lost everything. She lost her ability to play guitar, she has ptsd of Joel’s corpse, she lost Mel and her son, and is now left all alone (which was her greatest fear). Ellie lost so much more compared to Abby, And I think it was so unjustified.
Abby was a much more terrible person than Ellie, and she gets to have her happily ever after with the fireflies. While Ellie lost everything and has had her greatest fears realized.
I love the video man, it was good to hear another side of the story, but man do I disagree with you on some major points. Keep up the good work!

I think the people that took abby in the final chapter are the people she was talking to on the radio, not fireflys. I could be wrong but... doesn't it seem a bit odd to make a refugee camp for a basically wiped out group in the territory of a group known for kidnapping both infected and people for prisoners?

    • @99RedRedfake
      @99RedRedfake 4 года назад +53

Agreeing with every word in the video, I have to defend Abby here.
She absolutely feels guilt for killing Joel. Her entire storyline in the game is motivated by guilt.
First thing she says when you play as her is that she has trouble sleeping and she is throwing herself into her work going on every available mission she can to avoid thinking about what happened. She got her revenge and she feels empty.
When asked by Lev why she is even helping them since they are her enemies, her answer is "guilt". Plain and simple.
Also, to reduce the pain Abby endured to simply losing her friends and being tied to a post is really shifting the narrative to fit your argument.
She lost every single person she had left in the life that she loved as a direct result of her actions.
She was ENSLAVED for months on end. Let me say that again: she became a SLAVE for months on end. I don't know if you can put the amount of trauma that something like that will do to a person. She will live with that for the rest of her life.
The game's message is that showing compassion to your enemies is good and the only consequence of revenge is more loss.
Contemplate the only reason Abby survives being enslaved for one minute.
      Who saves her?
      Ellie.
Let that sink in. What would have happened if she had chosen not to spare Ellie and slit Dina's throat?
There would have been no one to save her and both her and Lev would be dead.
It's compassion who saves her in the end.
And Ellie showing her compassion in return means now they both have a chance to rebuild their life and start again.
That's what I feel the game goes for anyway. And that's why I disagree with your essay haha
Hope mine wasn't too bad ;)

I also think that the final fight between Ellie and Abby on the beach mirrors the beginning of TLoU1.
Abby carrying Lev in her arms parallels Joel carrying Sarah and Ellie represents the soldier that is about to kill them. Ellie is the one in power as she has all the guns and the knife while Abby and Lev are powerless; hurt and almost unable to defend themselves due to fatigue of being hung on the poles for a long time.
Abby and Lev are about to escape on the boat just like Joel and Sarah were supposed to when reaching the highway but Ellie stands in their way and wants to kill Abby.
It could also be one of the reasons that Ellie decided to spare them. She could have thought of the photo of Joel and Sarah and she knows how much pain Joel has gone through when he lost his daughter. Ellie then decides to spare Abby to save Lev from the fate that her own surrogate father has gone through.
Just a few thoughts of mine after playing through that battle. Don't know if that's cohesive but I hope it is.

I must be the only one who was actually looking forward to playing as Abby. I loved Joel and I was devastated, but due to the leaks, I already knew Abby's reason. I didn't like what she did but I understood it. What Joel did, which went a lot further than just saving Ellie, wasn't going to go unanswered. I really wanted to see how the game was going to get me to sympathize with Abby. I think it's brilliant. I wish I could have gone into it blind though.

I knew most of the game thanks to spoilers and leaks before I played, you could tell from the adverts that Joel was going to die. Some of the leaks were incorrect. Didn’t ruin the game it actually help understand the plot.

Great video. The first game as I recall made the ambiguity of Joel's decision more apparent. I recall that there is no guarantee that the Fireflies could actually have found a cure through killing Ellie and that some documents or notes you find when going through the hospital levels mention that. It seems like this game just made it much more cut-and-dry. That Ellie dying means a vaccine which I never remember was the case. Bizarrely of all the plot loopholes (like Joel and Tommy just straight up telling a group of strangers who they were) it is this one that grates the most.

Thank you. I’ve felt very strongly for my love of this game and everyone who’s opinions I respect have been shitting on the game. I hate to make this argument but I feel that this game is ultimately made for people who can separate themselves from the narrative and their love for the OG characters and understand this is a world with consequences. Anyone who played the first game is naive if they thought what Joel did in that hospital wasn’t gonna come with consequences.

I can never finished the first game because I dislike stealth, the first game is one of the most well writen games I've ever played and I have no deep attachment to the characters. 2 is written terribly and its pacing is all over the place along with killing characters left and right expecting you to be sad when they barely give you a reason to besides "they matter to ellie".

    • @Thomaskh7
      @Thomaskh7 4 года назад +1

Why am I supposed to care about Abby when she was a piece of shit first and I learn why after I hate her so much, that's terrible and makes little to no sense plus they act like her story is so much deeper than others to justify not hating her when everyone goes through so much shit in this world I just look at her as more of a brat for not being able to handle it.

Thomaskh7 I think the only death that can justifiably be used in your argument is jesse. 2 is horribly written how btw? The only thing I seem to agree with you on is that the pacing is fucked.

@@marcelpatterson1881 Yeah, the only writing problem I noticed was Jesee dying and nearly nobody caring or ever mentioning him existing. I think the only mention of him post death was from Tommy at the farm. Everything else was fantastic (imo)!

Nah op, the only thing I was naive about was believing that Naughty dog would honour the characters they said they would. I understand fully the world has consequences... You know, like going to murdering a child, without consent, without letting her say goodbye or allowing her surrogate father speak to her one last time for a slim chance of a cure. .. Doctors asked for it.

Your comment on the game is more than valid, it is a human and complex story, that most people juts won’t understand, these are good people living in a world that has made them do bad things to eachother, not much different than the world we live now, I truly loved this game, it gave me perspective on both sides of the characters, their motivations and dreams, it is a human tale, they absolutely nailed it.
