Busting tech support scammers: Undercover in India (Marketplace)

  • Marketplace tackles one of the largest scams targeting Canadians: Fake technicians claiming your home computer or smartphone is compromised - and demanding hundreds or thousands of dollars to fix it. We discover that much of the scamming activity emanates from call centres in India, and after months of cultivating sources on the ground, we get inside. Plus, we ask: What is the RCMP doing to stop this scam for good?

@@kbhasi : I haven't a clue what " _RUclips's AI_ " is, never having heard or read of it, before. "AI" in computer science is for " _Artificial Intelligence_ ", and having graduated in plus worked for enough years in CS' it'd be interesting to know how this sort of AI used by RUclips and Google would come to recommend CBC's Marketplace or any other good program series. When you communicate, try to be clear about it.

@PatientTangent : Yes, Marketplace has been interesting for me, better than regular, bland, ..., so-called news; BUT, CBC has also produced some other reports that I've found to be okay. Take, f.e., the reports about the two young guys who cold-bloodedly murdered 3 innocent people in BC this past summer, Bryer Schmegelsky and Kam McLeod, who ended up killing each other, one killing the other and then committing suicide. It wasn't investigative reporting, which MarketPlace is, but for regular news it was okay and of value, for Cdns needed this alert. There's plenty of useless, and worse, reporting by many media producers, but we can sometimes get some useful reporting. PROBLEM is, not enough. Besides other ones by MarketPlace regarding these scammers, here's another episode you might find interesting, " *_Food waste: How much food do supermarkets throw away?_* " (Marketplace) (22:26), CBC News, 28 Oct 2016, ruclips.net/video/QLqkV8cP4xs/видео.html. LOTS of edible food WASTED! This world doesn't lack food. It lacks SANITY.

There is a huge online community of Scam Baiters on RUclips who deliberately call scammers and waste their time so they can't be scamming anyone during that time. Thank you CBC for doing this and getting the word out there about these scammers. I was called a few years ago, being told I owed to Revenue Canada, was struck by the caller's very foreign accent and didn't "go for it"; told the person thanks for the info. and I'd check it out for myself. The caller didn't argue, we closed the call, I got the official phone no. for RC, called and was told that I didn't owe a penny to RC and to disregard these phone calls, which're only for scams. One of the things that aroused my suspicion is that RC hadn't sent me anything by Canada Post and I always expect that to happen with Cdn govt; but, another thing that triggered my "alarms" was the person's accent, totally, and I mean TOTALLY, foreign, too different. Also, why the heck would RC choose to try to contact a person by telephone, rather than using Canada Postal mail? SO, you DON'T care about innocent people harmed by scamming. Now you can go roll over and laugh out loud all you want, about being a JERK. Contrary to you, I don't think it's funny when innocent people are naively fooled. ...

She got a "microsoft" pop up on her computer saying there was a problem and she needed to call right away and of course it provided "microsoft's" phone number. Except of course it wasn't microsoft at all. Fortunately none of her banking or SS # or anything like that has ever been put into her computer so we were lucky there, and we literally had NO $. I finally got on the phone with the guy because my sister cannot understand their accents. He was pretty much demanding $499.99 to "fix" her computer after we let him have access. I told him I literally had .46 cents in the bank. I could hear in his voice how disappointed he was when he replied "oh".
I ended the call. Called my daughter's best friend since high school. She's younger and smarter than I am about these things. She walked me through removing all the crap he downloaded onto her computer and we restarted it and it worked fine. Just a little FYI if anyone's bothering to read this novel. If you ever get a pop up on your computer saying there's a problem and to call them right away, my much smarter frend said don't even try to close out of anything just hard shut down the computer with the on/off button. You should be able to turn it on after a bit and the pop up should be gone.
