Tax scammers traced back to India (Marketplace)

- Scammers are stealing millions of dollars from Canada by claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency in telephone calls. We trace the calls back to illegal call-centres in India and meet a former employee and local police who say the RCMP isn’t doing enough to stop the perpetrators.

It's Adam Smith! And they have a new method, something about someone using your social insurance to launder drug money. I had my doubts and then soon as they started asking about my bank accounts I laughed and hung up.
Yeah. And John Smith real name would be Gopal Sawami 😳

$99,500? I would rather go to jail than pay that.
Absolutely
😂😂😂😂😂😂. These scammers need to be put in jail or take all the properties & assets away from them. What a shame for people who scammed others' hard earned money. Majority of us have to work hard for our money even some of us get help from our parents & grandparents but they have to work so hard for their money
The man in the video who borrowed to pay that money did he not mention why he needed that money? I think since he borrowed from his son I would think his son will be more savvy to know that CRA would never call to collect money. And would never ask for money to be paid in bitcoins. That's why you send you kids to school so maybe they can be smarter than you and save you from grief such as this scam.
So you would rather go to jail and still have to pay $99,500.
Especially since jails here are considered better than cheap motels from pretty much any country. 😅
I get these robocalls everyday in my voicemail. When I call back and start speaking in hindi, they hangup 😂

This is how people get programmed in India when they are born, especially those in the cattle belt.
We like to spread like anything to every part of the country, breed like fungi and convert the whole country into Bhaiyyaland and rename it as Republic of Gandooland. Then we will steal, rob, do fraudulent activities and create nuisance. We also have dyslexia and epilepsy and hence can't drive in a straight line. So we jump into lanes abruptly and sometimes brake abruptly and create traffic chaos. Also, we dont understand the concept of driving on the correct side. We walk like tortoises swinging from side to side and dont understand the concept of personal space.
Tillu Miya u stupido xD
Couldn't have described the current state of India any better. The law enforcement department keeps blaming each other and then they say it isn't their responsibility. It is a shame. Sorry Canada. I hope these low lives who earn a living cheating people get caught someday

Ask yourself how many times a year you have called or been called by a legitimate call center. That ratio will tell you precisely what percentage of call centers are scammer v.s. legitimate.
$110,000!!!!??? I feel bad for the people being scammed, but why TF would you pay that much when they don't even come and talk to you face to face. If they ask payment through phone it's already a fukken scam.
Exactly. A little googling also helps.
CRA does not come to your home to speak to you if you owe money. There is your answer.
if i buy something above 20 euro i do atleast 10-20 minutes research so what this guy means is how he can pay a fine of 110k without doublechecking if its legit or not.
He is most likely a immigrant which means that he doesn’t know how Canada works so he just went with the flow
First the put fear into you, and you lose all sense of reasoning before they start to drill you to get you to pay them money.
Seriously, what bothers me the most is not the fact that these cyber organized scam artists exist, but the fact that people living in the modern world fall for these types of scams. Lack of common sense beyond belief...
Scammers don't target people like you they target immigrants and the elderly. People who can be harassed into submission it's not a lack of common sense.
Kevin Kimani they target everybody .I get on average 3-4 calls per week from scammers in chinese language ,any Indian accent . It is all about common sense.how can govt ask you in bit-coins,walmart card so on ,rather than proper tax filling procedure. In case you have problem why not contact Accountant .Go online to your CRA account.
I am sure people afraid of CRA did something wrong ,otherwise why would you worry about them.

@@strawberridoll If you owe the government money, they send you a letter detailing the amount, why you owe the money, how to pay them back and a phone number you can call. You can now even setup up an account with both the federal and provincial government, if you have to do provincial taxes, that allow you to access you tax information. So if you do receive a call from the CRA, legitimate or not, log in and double check the info you get.
Addendum: The CRA will not demand money from you without explaining things first. So if they do claim you owe them money, ask for details, where was the mistake made, when, etc. They'll happily give you details and the opportunity to pay them back. At the end of the day, a citizen in jail can't pay their taxes back, the CRA, like any tax agency, ultimately wants money, not a conviction.
To setup your account with the Canadian government, lookup my account, link below. Always double check the URL. As you will see by the one below, you can read out words that actually make sense and relate to what you want, ie, Canada, revenue agency, services, etc. If the URL makes no sense, then dont go. Many of the letters sent by the CRA will have the My account info on it that you can look up. They also include a phone number you can call for more info.

In India we are well aware of these scams, so we don't pick calls from unknown number , we have downloaded app called Truecaller , Canadians should also download it
Protected Dude The vast majority of Canadians will not be fooled by these parasites and most are aware of the scam so they don't need an app. The people who do get scammed obviously aren't aware of the scam, so why would they every think to get such an app. If this large of a scam was orchestrated inside of Canada, the authorities would have taken them down long ago, but they can't do anything because the scammers are in India, so it is up to the authorities in India to take down these gangs. Unfortunately some of the authorities in India have their hands in the pie, so they don't want to do anything. Parasites on society need to be stopped, because they take as much as they can and give absolutely nothing back to society.
Most of the victims are elderly people who grew up in a much different time. A person's world gets a whole lot bigger when they need to be aware of cyber crime and they grew up in a small town where they trusted everyone.

When these IRS Scammers call me I ask. "When were my taxes due last year? " "What is the most I can make to file on a 1090EZ Form?" "Who is the current IRS Commissioner?" "What is a Schedule K-1 used for?" "What is the address to the IRS building you are located?" "What is the State Capital of the State your calling from?" "How much does an IRS agent make?" It's around $50,000-$60,000 for an Agent or Auditor and a Special Agent around $100,000-$150,000! The scammers won't be able to answer any of these questions! If you live in Canada the forms are different.
An IRS Scammer called my wife last week and said there was a warrant for her arrest! My wife asked "What is my name and where am I located?" They couldn't answer.
Kent Harris Next time they will use your questions to be more prepared, just let them be ignorant about it
You are awesome
All just one google search away
The best way to deal with them is to get their full name and department spelled out for you. Get your file # from them, and call the official CRA/IRS line (found on the websites) to check. If the number is not anonymous a quicker way would be just to google it. I had a scammer like that call me last year, I googled his number while we talked. Found it marked as scam on various sites and confronted the guy, after which he hanged up.
Kent Harris, you’ve just disclosed these information to the scammers.
thank you so much dear journalist and we hope we catch all the scammers i hate scammers !
I got a couple of those calls, a computer left a message on my answering phone a couple times, but the computer starts talking as soon as the phone is picked up whether it's a person or not so I only got the tail end of the message which was a number to call and something about an arrest warrant. I did not call the number back. they stopped calling me. The police still haven't shown up.
*Bollywood music blares in background*
"I am an agent of the Internal Revenue Service" says a man with a heavy Hindi accent.
The GOC should either call or mail a letter to their citizens making them aware of this scam.

Oh cool, its an interactive learning segment. I'm in the middle of watching this and my phone starts ringing, "my social security number has just been suspended."
