Even for the recognition Brian gets, his skills is so underrated at least by most tech fans in general. I mean I get that there is stamina and all that involved in things like he does but being able to stand so far away and have the ability get the information needed with high speed as expected to hit it perfectly with a paddle just over the net is extremely impressive.

Don't answer those quizzes on social media accounts that are "fun to do". They can be loaded with questions like, Year you were born? Or favourite colour, hot drink, etc. Name of your pet. Good hackers will look at your account and those answers and can get enough info to get into many of your accounts. Even over a series of "fun to do" quizzes, not just one. They'd likely monitor your account over a week and come up with pure gold. Say goodbye to your money!

Back in those days (late 90's early 00's) there were about 10 of us in the same room, all within earshot of each other. I would hear another rep get the same person digging for info and I would go over to their desk and stop them from giving it out. Even back then social engineering was a big thing.

The problem is mostly a two fold. On one side, the company wants to offer the best service in order to keep customers happy and within their hold. On the other side, most customers care more about convenience than security. This naturally leads to laziness on both sides as they begin to accept each others sides. This is the advantage that phishing, social engineering and other art uses.

IN the UK the rule is the banks will never call and ask for personal information. If I'm called by any person purporting to represent an organisation I deal with I ask them for my details, to prove they are who they say they are, IF they don't/won't can't tell me, I hang up, simples. IF I call my bank then I will answer any security questions. I don't keep my whole life on a smartphone and so will probably never be successfully scammed.

What we need is a transparency in the market of reporting incidents and accounting for a company's reputation in this department. Whether this is government mandated or peer pressure oriented. They shouldn't have the right to hide these incursions when they are discovered, in the same way that credit card data is treated. Personal information that is disclosed to a party that has no right to that information is a breach of trust and confidence and usually requires legal permission, therefore, requires legal action or responsibility.

It could be Microsoft Teams video call, Skype or other but see the person face to face.

Sending a PDF or PowerPoint presentation about security and assuming the training will be at the best MAY not be the case. So far, out of every task I've been given, our bank is the only one that won't work with me... And I'm our Accounts Payable person. I have access to our account. I can verify every piece of information asked. But if I use my name, they end the call. Every other company account works with me as soon as I say "my boss has been getting on me to 'handle this task' so that's why I'm calling". And I have done A LOT on this company's behalf..

@@erynnlouise I disagree that rogers should be held responsible. Sure, they made a mistake in verifying it was you communicating to them in chat, but they didn't steal your money. Whatever crypto wallet you were using, wasn't secure enough. Instead of using 2auth with text messages, google 2auth provides more security, then it doesn't matter if people get into your rogers acc. Or better yet, store your crypto on a personal hdd, then hide that hdd somewhere. It's horrible how much money you lost, and amazing that people can take that with no remorse. However, I think tech companies had an issue with account security for a long time, so one solution was connecting accounts with email. Then they started to realize people use the same password for emails as they do other accounts and email isn't secure. Then they decided to connect accounts with phone numbers as well. Although the phone carriers weren't prepared to take that burden. To be the gate keeper between someone's accounts with $30,000 is a big responsibility. Blaming them for losing your money isn't the answer, it would be like blaming a police officer for not successfully stoping a home theft. Sure, it's the police officers job and responsibility to stop crimes from occurring, but it isn't their fault for the crime when they fail.

Schmuck some fair points. Here’s some extra details to consider. I can’t give all because of the open investigation. I was using google auth - they still got through. I always keep crypto in a hard wallet, I only had it in exchange briefly to convert for withdrawal. Rogers agents made 7 mistakes in a row, and even proceeded to do the sim swap after the account was flagged as “possible fraud”. This wasn’t acceptable human error but gross negligence in protecting my personal data. The money aside, I am now at risk of identity fraud for the rest of my life. More than a dozen people have reached out to me since this aired with the same experience, some lost crypto, some fiat, and some identity fraud. Rogers promotes 2FA as added account security. There are numerous mechanisms Rogers can put in place to prevent this, as other companies demonstrate with proven success. eBay. Paypal. Banking institutions. To name a few.

What? How will a VPN help at all? Aside from hiding from your ISP or whatever website you're traveling too. When you use a VPN your data still hits whatever access point you're connected to, so you're still vuln to mitm attacks and then travels to the vpn, then to the destination. If anything a VPN adds another dangerous aspect because your data is travelling through Nord's servers now. VPN companies love using 'security' as a marketing tactic, but it doesn't really help.

Call centers in canada suck. I've worked in them for the better part of my adult life, thankfully no more. 90% of company's out source their calls to agents who dont work directly for them. The agent they spoke with here works for HGS in barrie not Roger's in barrie. These sister companys dont pay well enough or accommodate at all for their workers and most just see it as a stepping stone. If companys cared about their consumers privacy they wouldnt outsource all of their calls to people they dont even know. I've seen terrible things even agents hacking customers accounts and taking credit cards. Truly a backwards industry.

Suddenly I kind-of love the way our South African companies ask the caller to give his/ her ID number, residential address, employer... and the call gets put through to a computer that demands your PIN... one digit or number out, and the call doesn't go on. Still not infallible, but wow. Eight calls to get that first woman's eight details?

I worked for a major hotel chain in a call center. People got their accounts breached all the time. Combine that with minimum wage for workers, horrific hours of work, endless barrage of abuse from unhappy customers and hiring anyone with a pulse that is just completely out of any other employment option, and here we are. It's an industry that sad to say, could really benefit from robots. Sorry, Artificial Assistants lol

Some companies use insurant companies that so-call does a background check and changes security questions on accounts. I found out about it when I contact Netspend after my card came up missing from my home and even had problems all because of the Houston County and Houston Street in Georgia is said differently here than the rest of the world. Questions that they gave were: (1) What county in Georgia did live in during 1999? I said Houston County. (2) What street is Northlake Drive off of? I said Houston Street. (3) Where did I live in Florida in 1970? Ok, I was stuck due to the fact that I was only 3 years old at the time and that September my father died so I told them knowing my mother it would properly be Seminole or St. Pete, I don't know and that I would have to call my mother and ask her due to the fact that I was only 3. Then I was told that I failed all 3 questions then it hit me and I asked the woman if she is from Texas, she said yes and I also asked her how did I get questions 1 & 2 wrong other then we say Houston difference here then anywhere else in the world. I got mad with her and asked to speak with someone in charge and he told me about a company they use to help them protect the security of the account with questions that came from the client past history instead of using the 3 questions given by each card holders. Since they change the 3 questions once a week I can call the following week and try again to enter my account. Now how can a company get by with that?

One thing I don't understand. Why Rogers (and others) not requiring the proper pin and security questions entered their software by their managers to do or even read anything with their accounts? It's so simple and I know it works this way here in EU...

    Social engineering???
Seems like a misnomer, this is a phishing call . Social Engineering is when Canadians are convinced by adversizing of how safe their information is.

This falls under the hacking term of social engineering. It's simple any method that enables you to extra information directly from a person instead of a machine.

@@systematic101 thanks for your input. My interpretation is actually what a social scientist might reply. Needless to say I went to the most knowledgable fellow in any room, GOOGLE. His dictionary reply was:
1.the use of centralized planning in an attempt to manage social change and regulate the future development and behavior of a society.
"the country's unique blend of open economics, authoritarian politics, and social engineering"
2.(in the context of information security) the use of deception to manipulate individuals into divulging confidential or personal information that may be used for fraudulent purposes.
"people with an online account should watch for phishing attacks
Turns out the definition has context and we are both correct although your interpretation should clarify with the word attack, but hey, I'm old.

... which falls under the category of social engineering:
phishing is one method of social engineering. social engineering is one method of hacking.
Since you said you are old, I'm going to bite the hacking one up front: yes, it means what people think it means. 20 years ago this was debatable. 40 years ago it had a different meaning.

i know of a very good hacker that can help you with any type of hacking, either phones or computers. My husband was so smooth at hiding his infidelity so I had no proof for months I was referred to some hacker and decided to give him a try the result was incredible because all my cheating husbands text massages, emails, Facebook, bitcoin, youtube,WhatsApp, Snapchat, fortnite ,Instagram /instagram followers and viber conversations was wired directly to my cellphone. He helped me put a round-the-clock monitoring on him and I got concrete evidence of his escapades if you think your partner is an expert at hiding in his cheat adventure you can contact him too at cybercrack_hack37588 on instagram

It's not about electronic hacking but mostly human errors both from the victim and the hackers. Human gullibility by smart smooth talkers. Always remember to change your password on social media and your bank accounts. 👍🏻

Teleco companies do ask security questions and enforce them , and customers are furious . They hate having to answer questions, they say "let people hack me I don't care , it's just a phone/cable account , I don't care" . People get SO angry when they need to answer security questions. They don't see the threat. If you try to send them to a store in person they completely explode . I've been taking these calls for 3 years , and customers NEED to see videos like this to understand that 1234 or 0000 are not useful pins. You NEED to answer the security questions.

The same thing happened to me with “American Express” my account was hacked. They let the person exchange information about me, change my password, change my security question and email. Then from within the AmEx account transfer almost all the funds from my checking account to the American Express card the withdrawal all the money from it. This was done within minutes from my bank notified me of the withdrawal. Of course American Express was not at fault. They canceled my card, black balled me and billed me after they gave away my money and my information. Worst security system ever!

I have used cyberspylove@gmail.com quite a number of times and they have never disappointed me.They helped me monitor my wife phone when I was gathering evidence during the divorce. I got virtually every information she has been hiding over the months easily on my own phone: the spy app diverted all his whatsapp, facebook, text messages, sent and received through the phone: I also got his phone calls and deleted messages. he could not believe his eyes when he saw the evidence because he had no idea he was hacked. they do all types of mobile hacks and computer hacks, you get unrestricted and unnoticeable access to your partner/spouse/anybody's social account, email,E.T.C Getting the job done is as simple as sending a message to cyberspylove on instagram and +1(213)290-4041 on hangout/whatsapp.

Why do no one addresses the real problem?
It is simply not a good Idea to use SMS for two-factor-authentication! Services should use Google Authenticator, one time TAN lists or (best) physical TAN generators.
