  • Victoria Uwonkunda makes an emotional journey back to Rwanda, where she grew up.
She was visiting for the first time since she fled the 1994 genocide with her family at the age of 12.
Victoria retraces her journey from the capital Kigali, to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In April 1994 extremists belonging to the Hutu majority ethnic group in Rwanda killed an estimated 800,000 people, mainly minority Tutsi and some moderate Hutu. It happened in 100 days. The mainly Tutsi forces which took back power following the genocide were also alleged to have killed thousands of Hutu in retaliation- an allegation they deny.
    Produced by Victoria Uwonkunda.
Filmed and edited by Anthony Irungu.
    Additional filming by Kevin McGregor.
Executive producers: Miriam Quansah, Louise Clarke and Marko Zoric

I am from Cameroon and this Rwanda Genocide carried out by the Hutus against the Tutsis in which about a million people or more were slaughtered in the watchful eyes of the international community is a very terrible thing that happened to mankind. I shed tears each time I watch a documentary on that. I am even more surprised how they managed to reconcile and live together as a country after too much hatred and bloodsheed. May God bless Paul Kagame for transforming Rwanda this much within a short time. Yes Rwanda is a great country. Thanks very much for this documentary.

I have heard terrible stories in my life but the story of the Rwanda genocide really breaks my heart and I do shed tears when am watching documentaries about this terrible story. I don't understand the world anymore. How did the world let this happen? Close to a million people being killed in cold blood while the world looks on? I am reading a lot of world politics, trying to understand how the world operates. innocent civilians being killed in Gaza and the world superpower keeps on sending weapons? Please make me understand how the world operates. Congratulations Vic for this documentary.

Victoria Uwonkunda's return to Rwanda is more than just a trip; it's a deep, emotional dive into her own past and a nation's painful history. Watching her journey from Kigali to the border with Congo, you can't help but feel the weight of her experiences. She was just a kid, only 12, when she had to flee the genocide that took so many lives in 1994. This documentary, brought to life through her eyes, is incredibly moving. It's not just about the places she visits; it's about the memories, the people, and the stories that have marked her life and the entire country. The team behind this, with Victoria at the helm, has done something really special. They've managed to capture not just the horror of what happened, but also the hope and resilience that's come after. It's a must-watch for anyone who wants to understand the real impact of Rwanda's history on its people and the strength they've shown in moving forward.

I think it is important to note that:
1.) There were practice killings taking place way before the president's plane was shot down in places like Bugesera as early as the Spring of 1993 and many witnesses say French soldiers were overseeing these barricades where Interahamwe would pull people with Tutsi ID cards from cars and kill them.
2.) The Refugee camps in the Congo were not filled with Tutsi Survivors but with the Hutu population and the fleeing perpetrators as the RPF won the civil war they were fighting while the genocide was taking place and took over the different regions of Rwanda. The camps were used as an attempt to try and regroup and re-arm the perpetrators to go back in and fight the RPF. This formation of a refugee camp was all pushed by France in the UN under the guise of a humanitarian mission.

It’s been 30 years since the 1994 Rwandan genocide and on this occasion Kagame invited his friends (Bill Clinton, Isaac Herzog) to commemorate the victims of a genocide that he himself planned/instigated.
We see this as another case of “criminals returning to the scene of the crime”.
The official narrative of the genocide is full of lies, misinformation and deceptions. This narrative perpetuate the lie of Kagame being the “hero” and his RPF the “army of salvation”, when in reality he’s the true villain who’s been holding the Rwandan people hostage for 30 years.
We know that RPF instigated/planned the genocide. There’s indeed a “colonial” origin to the Rwandan genocide, but there’s also a RPF origin to this tragic incident which victimized not only the “Tutsis”, but also Hutus, Batwas and countless innocent people in the entire Great Lakes region.
To better understand the role the current Rwandan-leadership played in the genocide and their complicity in the ongoing genocide of the Congolese people, we recommend a book called “In Praise of Blood; The crimes of the Rwandan Patriotic Front” by Judi Rever.
The Rwanda we’re familiar with today is but a smokescreen, just because the streets are “clean” it doesn’t mean that Kagame’s hands aren’t dirty and saturated with the blood of African people.
We can better honor the victims of the genocide by searching for truth beyond the official narrative of the genocide.
We can also better vindicate the victims of the 1994 genocide by advocating against the ongoing genocide of the Congolese/Palestinian people and most importantly by opposing the dictatorship of Paul Kagame.

1million Tutsi’s 😅 where do you pull these numbers from there were no more than 8 million people in Rwanda at that time and the Tutsi people only were 11-15% of the population. Which means there were at that time only a total of 880.000-1.200.000 Tutsi’s. If you claim that over a million Tutsi’s have died then according to your number of 1 million every Tutsi has died. If so how come there are still Tutsi’s like the president himself and the members of his cabinet till this day. The math is not mathing my guy. Or do you claim that the percentage of the Tutsi people at the time was higher than 15%? If so why isn’t there a research or statistical data showing this.

@thehoneydeev read well the definition of genocide. When we talk of holocaust, we talk of the Jewish people who were killed because of who they are, not because of what they did or their political affiliation. Neither does it mean that there was no other nationalities like Germans, Polish, Italians, Russians, etc who died. Rwandans too don't deny that some hutus also died and there's a day to remember all those who died either because of their political ideologies or because they were saving Tutsis. However, the prime targets in the genocide were Tutsis and this is well documented by rights organizations and the ICTR. So my friend, Rwandans know better and they are custodians of their affairs.

The war was effected to all of us

Wow the bittersweet wish of every Rwandan child who survived the Genocide. I was 6 years old. Its amazing how much children who have experienced war, can be agents and bridges of change. indoctrination is our biggest hinderance. undiluted truth is our only lifeline to heal our land and future generations. What makes one ethnicity; survivors and false claimants of heroic Majesty, while the other ethnicity is denied of truthful mourning and healing?
Can we acknowledge every Rwandan? Can we rise above the propaganda and clouded indoctrinated judgment and give each other respect of being equal humans? 30 years on.... Can we not do better?
Side: im not sure that man admitted to killing without duress. It looked very rehearsed, almost like he needed to repeat it to not face greater consequences.

However yesternight I was watching a similar documentary 'Reclaiming History' by DW and they stated that there are NO ETHNIC Groups in Rwanda, and the Hutu, Tutsi, Twa is a narrative created by colonialist. Please research on this I would really love you to confirm if this is true! Conversely, the Rwandan Genocide is a terrible nightmare for Africans and the entire human race collectively; it shows what terrible evils we're capable of once we allow differences to develop amongst us; intentionally or unintentionally!
