- De Arend (the Eagle) worked the first train in the Netherlands in September 1839. Built for the broad gauge "Holland Iron Railway" by R B Longridge, she worked the inaugural train of the Dutch railway network in September 1839. Although scrapped in 1857, a full size working replica was constructed in 1939.

It's amazing that the replica has been around longer than the original!🤔💕💕😁😁🇬🇧
There's an extremely narrow 510mm gauge within the 1945mm broad gauge, sitting along side the 1435mm standard gauge. 01:51
It's always interesting hearing about a broad guage locomotive.
Although the Dutch measured their gauge from rail centre line to rail centre line instead of inside face to inside face making the gauge 2,000mm or 1,945mm from the inside faces of the rails.
Honestly, I hope one day a heritage railway somewhere opens with a line of 7 foot broad gauge track, along with narrower broad gauge lines (maybe the 6'4 3/8" gauge) to make the line dual-gauge and more accessible to more broad gauge designs! Now, it's a pipe dream I know, and would be super expensive to build all the broad gauge steam locomotives from scratch, but we would be able to see so many long extinct locomotives that were destroyed simply because they were broad gauge! Again, I know it's an expensive pipe dream, but it would still be cool!
amazing video and a amazing train. Im from the netherlands and had the oppertunity to drive it
oh wow. I'd love to have a go, having regularly driven "Planet" in Manchester.
u pronounced p much all of the dutch words perfectly, I was surprised to hear that
Thankyou! I really enjoy languages and learning them and the sounds they make.
Starbucks? So not kettles, but percolators. 😁
Bravo! Good video, old steam locomotives.I respect you, thank you.
Thank you very much!
Good video
Anthony thanks for again a very nice video on steam engines of old. Don't worry about your Dutch pronunciation, Impressive for someone not using the language, but then I know your French is rather fine as well.
Thank you so much! I'm flattered.
could you cover the Derwent locomotive next? its the oldest darlington-built engine surviving today.
Its on my to-do list with a guest presenter! Watch this space.
Fun video! Always interesting to see something from your home country. I think I saw it in steam once before? When it's not in steam it's kept as a part of an attraction in the museum, which is quite a practical way of keeping it 'in use' when it isn't outside. You're Dutch pronunciations are also really good!
Thankyou! I enjoy learning languages
Starbuck! Ha Ha 😂
Did you know in Russian food mall Vokzal 1853 that steam locomotive is here
The most recent major overhaul of this locomotive was filmed and is available at ruclips.net/video/OWKkSrPwUH8/видео.html
This is really interesting, but I can't help wondering - is that a BR Class-08 with fancy paintwork in the background?
Dutch railways used English Electric shunters too!
No, it's s the export version of the Class 11.
Top video again; when did they conform to standard gauge? Were these the only broad gauge engines? Thanks.
Re-upload?
corrected re-upload. First one had a few errors.
I did what?
"Edward Starbuck the invenor of coffee". Christ! The only consoling thought is that you are an expert of old trains and not coffee.
Waow! That's one heck of a take away from a JOKE.
