The spectacular construction of the Dutch Afsluitdijk in 1929 in color! [AI enhanced & colorized].

- The "Afsluitdijk" is part of the Zuiderzee Works in The Netherlands and part of an elaborate plan in the early part of the 20th century to protect The Netherlands from the sea as well as to create new (farm) land. The dyke separates the Wadden sea from the former Zuiderzee for which its name was changed to "IJsselmeer".
Its construction started in 1927 based on the plans that were developed by engineer Cornelis Lely. His first plan to enclose the Zuiderzee dates from as early as 1891! In 1932 the last closing hole, the "Vlieter", was closed. A year later, the dike was opened to road traffic. A monument was erected on the site where the Afsluitdijk was closed, the Vlietermonument.
Locks for shipping and discharge sluices are located on both sides of the Afsluitdijk. Closest to the province of North Holland, near Den Oever, are the Stevin locks. The Lorentz locks are located at Kornwerderzand, more than 4 km from the province of Friesland. The entire dyke is 32.5 km long, the water barrier part is 30 km; its width is 90 meters.
A traffic road connects the two provinces over the Afsluitdijk. This road is part of Rijksweg 7. The road is not at the highest point of the dike but south of it, so that the Wadden Sea is not visible from the road. There is a cycle path between the highway and the highest point. Since cyclists are not allowed on a highway, the cycle path should be considered as a separate road.
Once the IJsselmeer was formed, the water turned from salt to fresh in the 1930s. This had a huge impact on the lives of the populations of the surrounding fishing villages like Volendam, Marken, Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Urk a.o. No longer could they fish for sea fish but had to convert to eal fishing and other fresh water fish.
This film highlights the rather primitive conditions under which this dyke was constructed. The bedding of the dike consists of huge woven wicker nets on which heavy bolders were thrown by hand. A diagram in the film explains the construction method. The film ends with the closing of the last hole on 28 May 1932. This date is commemorated on the monument that was erected at that spot.

i cannot get over how exceptional this is, both in scrupulous high quality camera documenting in 1929, the nature of the labour (straw mats! shovels! high tech cranes in 1929! clasping each other while carrying the heavy metal pipes ) and the restoration of this film.....this should be standard footage in history lessons at school.....very touched...thank you!!

All they care about is making big bucks and corrupting young minds by continuously showing agression, war, attrocities and the most violent content as possible. No wonder the youth is so violent, like yesterday in Rotterdam...

@@ricksfilmrestoration5163 Het zou nog wel eens kunnen werken in de artistiekere cinemazaaltjes, wie weet op festivals, met bijhorende traditionele ambachten erbij? Zuiderzeemuseum, arnhem openluchtmuseum? Ik denk dat heel veel mensen dit prachtig zullen vinden. Ik denk ook in middelbare en hogere scholen die metaal en houtbewerking, techniek, scheepvaart en bouw doen zou dit een mooie aanvulling op hun leerpakket zijn.....als zij met strooien matjes een hele afsluitdijk kunnen bouwen kunnen wij toch wat afkicken van al onze schermverslaving en wat meer gaan tuinieren/mooie houten huizen bouwen of zo, nee??
Dit in herstelde vorm te zien vergroot mijn respect nog meer voor die generatie. Doet me denken aan een gezegde die ik van een oudere heer hoorde: 'Vroeger waren de schepen van hout en de mannen van staal, tegenwoordig zijn de schepen van staal en de mannen van hout.'

What a beautiful and impressive film! I owe my life to the heroes who made land from the sea: the workers, scientists (planners, sociologists, geologists, hydrographers, engineers). My parents are children of pioneers and colonists who settled in the polder behind the Wieringermeerdijk (the dike that was closed a few years before the Afsluitdijk). The Zuiderzee Works are imho the eighth wonder of the world!

Mooie beelden weer, goed dat er een arbo is opgericht als ik naar de veiligheid van toen kijk.
Toch veelzeggend dat NL's meest roemruchte projecten zoals de drooglegging van de polders, de afsluitdijk en de deltawerken gebouwd zijn in de tijd vóór de Arbo.

arbo heeft snowflakes van de arbeider gemaakt , 3 dozen koek tillen is het limiet en wel met een rechte rug
@@QNFee eerlijk gezegd kan ik daar niet rouwig om zijn, ik ben pro fysieke arbeid en het mag best een beetje zwaar zijn maar als je die arbo regels niet hebt ben je na 2 jaar kapot, meest lucratief is natuurlijk ook mensen 8 uur per dag 5 dagen per week in dezelfde gouding 1zelfde taak continu laten uitvoeren maar dat is zelfs met koekdozen tillen teveel. Als je veel/vaak moet tillen zijn limieten en goede houding echt noodzaak, maar vooral ook veel afwisseling van taken anders hou je het niet vol. Of ze moeten 2 keer zoveel verdienen (zodat je wat minder uren kan draaien) zodat je niet op je 50 ste al met pensioen moet

Prachtige film! Wat mooi dat dit bewaard is gebleven. Ik herken heel veel dingen van vroeger. Zinkstukken maken met wiepen die eerst op de wiepenstelling met de hand gemaakt werden. De geur van Gelders rijshout. Steenzetters, opperlui en rijswerkers. De grote koffiekannen en de emaile kroezen. Allemaal een pet op en een zware tussen de lippen. Wiepen maken bij hoogwater en zinken bij laagwater met DUKW;s. Kranen op US Army WW2 onderwagens. De geur van onverbrande benzine en het geluid van de motoren. Ja, echt werken met spierkracht, lange armen en wijde neusgaten. Na zoveel jaar, als de dag van gisteren.

Ik ben op dit moment aan het werk op de afsluitdijk. Het project heet levvel (lely's erfgoed veiliggesteld) ik draag maar een klein steentje bij maar ben toch trots dat ik hierbij betrokken ben en het werk van deze toppers van dichtbij zie en er ook aan mee mag werken om Nederland veilig te houden in de toekomst

Great film! I had heard about the technical construction of the dike, but had not realised how much manual labour was involved. Which may have had something to do with the werkverschaffing (or was that later?) but still.

Ik wil niet vervelend zijn, maar volgens mij gaat het hier over de Afsluiting van de Wieringermeer, 29 juli 1929. De Afsluitdijk kwam daarna in 1932. De film is prachtig, het werk toen bewonderenswaardig, de bewerking nu eveneens.
De originele titel van deze serie bij Beeld En Geluid is ´Zuiderzeewerken´. Naar mijn idee is het echt niet alleen beperkt tot de Wieringermeer. Kijk zelf op de nieuwe zoekmachine van Beeld En Geluid.
Dag Rick, mag ik de film gebruiken voor een lokale website op Wieringen?
Geweldig ook die kaart waar ze laten zien dat Wieringen echt nog een eiland was, op Google maps is dat nog steeds heel duidelijk te zien!

Daarom is de Markerwaard polder er nooit gekomen vanwege o.a fel protest vanuit Volendam en Marken. De Houtribdijk is een overblijfsel van dit plan

The Afsluitdijk is an important invention. Reference is made to a storm that occurs at most once every 10,000 years. The blocks should be able to survive even that storm. Too bad all these smart men don't know about a recurring natural disaster that our planet is suffering from. This is mentioned in various old books and e.g. also by Plato. That natural disaster is caused by the ninth planet in our solar system that comes close to the sun and planets at high speed every few thousand years. The most famous disaster is the deluge, but also 'the end of times' was caused by that planet. After years of research, I was able to reconstruct a timeline. The next disaster of that great one takes place in the year 7.156. The disaster causes a tidal wave "higher than the highest mountains". Only then will the Afsluitdijk no longer provide sufficient protection. The research can be read as an e-book under the title: Planet 9 = Nibiru. @@ricksfilmrestoration5163 the music is great, I agree....a bit earie yet grand.....but its not familiar for most people, most people like famous blockbuster music as wel ! `wat de boer niet kent dat vreet-ie niet` ;) I like the music a lot, though i can imagine there s a lot of other music out there that would fit as well. But its your project and your choice, I think its a very good combination

I would formulate this slightly differently because your comment suggests that ´werkverschaffing´ was the only reason to start this huge project. Indeed it was part of the project, but not the main driving force. Creating new (agricultural) land for the Netherlands and protecting the country from the sea were the main objectives.
@@Rick88888888 yes, and they used the werkverschaffing project for that goal, otherwise they probably should have hired immigrants, I cannot imagine many people wanting to do this unless very well paid.....were they well paid? I also wonder what the mortality rate was...ah, and no helmets they wore!

@@ricksfilmrestoration5163 i think it `d be good we d incorparate a good part physical labour again in EVERY job (and I dont mean lifting 80kilo basalt rock necessarily). Our health and environment would benefit so much from it.....I think the sitting part and doing the same for long periods is very bad for our spine, muscles and nerve system....variation of movement should be there in all workplaces, AND working in the open air
