Finding FREEDOM Again, Why I left my teaching career for full-time van-life & converting our new van

  • In this video, I am opening up more. I am sharing how & why I ran away from my life, career, house and everything to find freedom again. I am particularly talking about why I left my teaching job and moved into full-time van life. And, how this had an impact on my income, ego and emotional health and well-being. The up-to-date parts of the video show the van mods James and I have been doing in our small van conversion. The curtains I was sewing went wrong twice and I had to unpick them! I did tell you I wasn't very good at sewing! I'm also sharing my newly finished art trolley with a tour or it too! At the end, I talk a little bit about the comments from last week and open up to how I am truly feeling at the moment. Thank you for watching, keeping me company and having a cosy cuppa with me again. Keep shining bright! Big loves, Wendy. Xxx

I rarely comment, but bloody hell this hit me.
Just today (!) was my last day working in a school, and I'm starting to build a business to be able to sell my art in the future. Completely followed my heart.
And as you said, working in a school, it's a battle everyday, you win some, you lose some, but the war will never stop... and it made me ill. So it was just not worth it anymore.
    Thank you for being you.
And also, owls are my spirit animals, so when I say that owl candleholder I took it as a sign I'm on the right path now.

The old story is often odd remarks made about us! At 76 you would think things said some sixty years ago would no longer drive present day actions, but no matter how I try and push then out, I have a struggle to express myself! Watching you dance and walk in lovely scenes remind me of the imaginative child who danced and sang so happily, and the adult cousin who laughed and said “she can’t dance or sing, she must be tone deaf and lacks rhythm” ! My other imaginative ways, art, stories, and adventures were encouraged by my grandparents who I lived with in an almost rural area of Florida on the Loxahatchee river in the 1950’s. It was almost like a jungle with alligators, snakes, and panthers! I climbed trees and pretended my stories! My grandfather bought out an art store because I wanted to paint in oils at ten years old! But I will dance and sing because of your example, to get back that little girl! I love your dancing it seems so free! Blessed and safe days!

I've just found you and your channel. Thank you. At 61 I do relate to much of this, living a life doing so much to conform, raise our daughters, achieve "the dream" and when the lock down happened and we lost a lot of work, the home we rented, I realized I'd lost myself. And I realized I was on a path to "someday I'll do the OTHER things I've waited to do!" And it was NOT going to happen. I was almost 69 then, and I wasn't closer to the freedom to draw, paint, travel, be financially free, be slow and deliberate and not have so much stuff I didn't need and didn't love. You inspire me to bring ME back to being important. Thank you.

I have just celebrated my 60 th birthday. All my life I have suffered with just not quite feeling the same as others, never really fitting in but today something really amazing happened to me. You verbalized why I left teaching better than I could have. It's difficult for creatives to be in a profession that is so stifling and seems to make up rules and procedures arbitrarily and just as soon as you get used to it (as best you can), they change everything again, usually adding more responsibilities while simultaneously becoming more rigid and removing what little autonomy teachers have in the classroom. I, too, was becoming physically ill. My body decided to tell me what I'd been ignoring in my heart and justifying in my head. Such bliss to be living free and making art on my own terms!
Also, I wanted to tell you that you have been one of the inspirations to start my own RUclips journey. I began watching in 2020 and have been slowly savoring every video. Love to you, Miss Wendy.

Thank you again, Wendy, from one teacher to another. I relate to this so much. I went into teaching with enthusiasm but after 10 years, it became too much and I ended up ill too. So I was encouraged to leave teaching by my family and my fiancé. Now I am a stay at home Mum, doing art in my (rare) spare time, and I'm so much happier for it. I wish I'd done it earlier. Take care - and I love the shelf on the trolley. If you hadn't told us, I would have assumed it was that colour because it was a shelf and not edged like the other two. It looks great. Really looking forward to new shop stuff! Love and hugs, Xina xxx

This is my exact experience of teaching in mainstream, what it did to me, made me physically and spiritually ill. How teaching was eroding my sense of what humans are and what they need as children, the passion to give children a wholesome life knowing how important this is.
I lost me, my passion and my creativity. Today after 6ys of not teaching im finally becoming me again and a much stronger richer me.

I am now pursuing my own art and working for a library, which I love equally! I can now foster cats, take longer hikes and wearing my quirky clothes. I put out my crystals in my home, I rightsized to what I love and I filled my heart and soul with great happiness.

A similar story as a teacher leaving the United States school system. The journey has brought me abroad to live more simply, volunteering with literacy programs, and painting and making art. Now loving a sunny life in Spain but with a cancer diagnosis I'm learning more along the journey. It is a scary unknown part of the journey but it all helps separate the "wheat from the chaff"- what is of real value and what isn't, choosing to embrace or let go. Art is such a great teacher in following that inner voice. Thanks for your wonderful videos and glimpses into your journey.

Your are so beautiful- inside and out! ❤️ As a teacher this really hits home. There must be a problem if we end up getting sick just by doing our job (and more than likely we are putting our whole heart into it!) It’s supposedly an honourable job, and that’s why we are drawn to it. But something is amiss, perhaps the system, top-down hierarchy, or rigidity. Some schools are different, but more often than not we are just being injured by the war, as you call it. I think there are many unconventional ways to educate that are liberating for teachers and students alike- which I am very excited to pursue. Thank you so much for your videos! They give me inspiration.

Anxiety is such a pain at night! Some things that have helped me:
    - listening to the track Weightless by Marconi Union. I recommend reading about this because there’s science behind it. I usually loop it for 24 min timer and I’m usually asleep before it ends.
    - I’ve recently purchased a weighted blanket and I’ve noticed a HUGE reduction in my anxiety.
    - diffusing oils as I sleep

I found you a few months ago I think, and kind of popped in now and then, more inspired by how you are living your life full on, and then lately these latest videos and the van build... hitting me in the heart. My husband and I are planning our van buy and build, but even more so, the power of you sharing YOUR choice to take back YOUR self and your own LIFE and SOUL and to LIVE... I am soaking these videos up almost through every pore and breathing them in, like light into the dark places. I have had a dream for a while now and I am finding it more and more important to me, so I am slowly working through the obligations to others sort of making and gathering myself together for my own... wings about to spread? So, thank you... to both of you! Sending warm love, Lynne

I contemplated a teaching career at age 18. I immediately knew I couldn't do it. It felt like dieing to me. Working at same thing every day for over 20 years felt depressing.
So, instead I became a Park Ranger with US National Parks. Still, I was teaching every day, but every day was different. Every class was different. Life was not always so planned and simple. I went through a bad divorce. I raised 3 children. I buried my second husband after a long, sad illness. He was a Vietnam veteran. All that behind me now, I'm at a transition point again. What lies ahead feels exciting.
Thank you. I enjoyed hearing about your journey and your perspective on life. God bless you...

Much love to you and your freedom. We didn't come here to worry about paying rent and now you know that you cant un-see it- you are free. Life takes care of life we don't need to plan, just be open. God takes care of life - we are life - we are all connected- God is everywhere. The person and ego mind just creates resistance on our path. In our true place, the self, the non-dualistic life, we are whole. God bless you on your perfectly imperfect journey.

Thank you for sharing. It speaks to me most because you are over 30 (not that you look it, I only assume by your life experience). Most the videos of people speaking of freedom who are under 30 doesn’t feel good to me, because it doesn’t include, or understand me. I am 37, and made small achievements much later in life. I hope to start to travel, and pursue my dreams, next. I wanted to know it’s okay to do so over 30, even though the world will embrace me less.

I’ve been catching up with your vlogs. I wonder if James could build you another shelf for the art trolly? It looks as though you have room for one near the bottom. If the shelf is put in with side rails, things will stay on, and not fall off. That would clear even more off the art area. Maybe your glasses would fit on the bottom shelf. Anyway, glad some things are looking up, even if it’s a bumpy ride. Other people’s problems do have an impact on us, I know those sleepless nights. Van weekends look like fun-hope you take us along!

I have about 27 years in teaching . I too became ill but have learned how to protect and take the time for healing when needed. Teaching has touched my heart in many ways. I have started pursuing more creative outlets in the past 5 years or so. When I see the creative vibe and sincere heart in others it really allows me to see how special and unique each of us are. Thanks for sharing your spirit of joy and truth with us.

Hey Wendy! Discovered you by chance on YT. Love your works and the trolley and van projects. Looking forward to catching up on the rest of your videos.
I had a similar experience. I was a teacher aide/substitute and left for similar reasons. My move was to a rural community for the last several years. Now I'm preparing to move again, to a busy college town for a writing gig (subject must be interviewed in person). After that, maybe I'll wander a bit as well. Blessed be.

I'd like to tell you how inspiring you have been to me. There is a Therapist on RUclips and I really like how she explains feelings and how to cope with them. Her channel is called In a Nutshell.
Also the things you have said today have sparked an idea of being authentic and honest myself. I have recently found out that I may be Autistic, have ADHD, am dyslexic and have Dyspraxia. I left my job as a TA in a primary school when the menopause hit. I couldn't think straight anymore had became chronically anxious. After nearly a year on the sick I was unable to return to work. My husband knew that anytime I was struggling always still went to my art. So he suggested that l went to art school. Now I have not only finished a Foundation art course, but l also have done two years of a three year degree in Surface Pattern. It's the best thing I've ever done. This is how I found out about my differences. Because of your honesty today, I am toying with the idea of starting a channel myself and admitting my neuro-diversities. Maybe I can inspire others. Also I want to be a good role model to my children. One is autistic and one possibly has ADHD. They are both dyslexic too. My daughter is in the top set in her comp and about to start her GCSEs. My son is struggling and about to start comp in Sept. I want to do the right thing.
If you have had time to read this, I would love to read your thoughts.
    Kay
