The main reason I watch your wonderful tutorials is not so much for the subject matter, but for your "pearls of wisdom". Tony Couch also said to "paint it as dark as you want the first time", but that is easier said than done. The advice about using a light touch is something I must remember more often to avoid disturbing layers. For payne's grey vs. neutral tint, if they are made with PB15 (thalo blue), the pigment will stain. BTW, we just spent some time in Canada - St. Anthony, Cornerbrook, and Sydney. The Emporium in Sydney harbor had many handmade items by local artisans. It is a beautiful country, and the citizens are so polite and welcoming. My husband says when he grows up, he wants to be Canadian! 😍
Oh, I am from St John’s, the island of Newfoundland, which is a province of Canada. We are a relative newbie. We joined Canada in 1949. Before that we were at Dominion a Canada that went broke. 😅This is my first time commenting, even though I saw one of your other videos. I really liked that video and so I am now looking forward to seeing some more.
I'd like to say thank you for the quality of your instruction. You present your information with patience, clarity, and great knowledge. I am so excited to try this painting.
From Waterloo, Ontario. This is lovely, so inspiring and instructive. I’ve been a bit scared of reflection on water but will certainly give it a try now. Thanks again for your generosity.
So glad I stumbled across you here, Shelley. I've watched a few of your vids and they are the best on here. No they really are- watching has made me able to flex my watercolour muscles properly again at last. (I got back to wcolour last year after not doing any painting at all for over 20 years.) I am now a HUGE fan.
Enjoyed this very much and learned a great deal. Thank you for sharing your thought process around the choices you made. I feel like I was back at the lake in the evening with my dad many years ago - refreshing peace… ~ a newbie from Alberta
Thank you Shelly. You always make me feel as if I can do it because you make it look so simple. You bring a lot of common sense to watercolor painting. I will actually try this.
Oh my gosh I love this so much!💕💕💕💕💕 Request: tall ships! Don’t you love the old tall ships with the vertical sails! They are so romantic, and pirates are the ultimate bad boys!
I have been watching your demonstrations on RUclips on my TV. I would like to download photos of the subject you paint. I went to images but the actual photo you painted from was not visible. I am trying to get back to art. I have worked in many mediums but never became proficient in water color. I am medium ability and intend to start painting along with your demos. Please send me information about how I can be part of your demos on line.
Hello from Australia. I’m wondering if this tutorial could also be used as a guide for painting dappled light under trees or do you have another tutorial for that technique? I am a newby to watercolour and loving your teaching. Thank you so much
Thank you very much. Dappled light is similar although shadows are different than reflections. They would be in tree trunks and branches as well as on the leaves themselves. Unlike reflections, shadows will be softer and not the colour of the casting object but a darker version of the surface colour. For example, a green tree doesn’t make green shadows on rock but it would be a darker version of the rock itself. It would also follow the form of the rock. Think of how snow shadows fall across a road - they go up over the snow bank at the edge and then straight across the road and over the next bank again. They are not just flat.
I'm not Shelley but she says at the beginning of the video she is using Arches 140# cold press. Every professional w/c artist I've ever seen uses only cotton paper.
Hello Shelley i am in California and want to be present on your Wednesdays demos. The next is August 30th. Can you help me connect at the right time. Thank you. Jackie the English Lady

Hi Shelly! Michigan USA here!! Love your videos
You’ve captured the serenity at dusk on the lake. I’ve learned more about perspective on water. Thank you!
I really like this demonstration and you have a very calm voice. That is good thank you.

Awesome, from a geology camp in Northern Angola
This looks like alot of nerve wracking fun to paint. I'm always amazed at how you arrive at the result. Brilliant 👏

I really love you're art. And I really want to see how you would paint a thunderstorm :) a very windy day with thunderstorm :)
Nancy from Zephyrhills Florida, new to your channel, self taught acrylics, but do want to learn how to do watercolor painting.
Would a small hair dryer work rather than a heat gun?
Sure. Mine is loud (can’t speak over it), blows everything off my table and takes longer to dry so I prefer the heat gun

Could I use a dry brush to show some of the light reflection on the water?
Lovely
