    I do have a sea sponge that has been in retirement for quite some time, not sure why?
    Thanks Ellen for your real time sea sponge tutorial. I will get mine out of its corner and start using it again. What lovely little 🖼 you created with the sea sponge.

    Next day i tried the sponge tap method on cheap practice paper. I use tray paints so I didn’t have saturated paint as the tube paint. First i tried the dry leftovers on my pallet I found the best part of my sponge. The paint was Still too weak. Then i tried tapping my clean wet sponge right on the green colors in my paint tray. It worked great. Rinse sponge. Repeat with the yellow color range. Rinse then the red and orange area. Rinse and again with brown. Much better for the paint tray medium. I’ll try the exercise with my new technique.

After watching you paint this lovely landscape and it’s many shades of green, you made me question how I saw things. 2 in 1 is great! I just finished your landscape with the cottage, & the chicken & apples; & shall do them again. I also enjoyed your simple abstracts. Being a newbie to watercolor I don't mind doing some twice. (I just thought of your birch trees--zowie.) As for the sponge, who knew? Do you have one of goldfish with sand, a little castle or whatever or perhaps angel fish? My daughter surprised me with a couple of sketchbooks. Although I'm very happy using the pads, I think of sketchbooks for the more "advanced". Yes, I'm a little intimidated. Thanks for all the ideas, & techniques.

    Great tutorial Ellen, yes I occasionally use a natural sponge, but now I see more applications. Might even try a painting with only natural applicators, sponge, lichen, twig, feather, sand with the grandkids, how fun! My off subject question though, what would you suggest for a fixative for watercolor postcards to actually survive being mailed? Or best to put in an envelope instead? Thanks

      you dont' need a whole set start with a few colors, cad yellow deep, cobalt blue and or peacock blue, quinchrdone magenta- and a Paynes gray these can make many colors - but add a few fun ones in- like Opera, and Prussian blue!

    I love your ideas and effects but I need to find something that is similar but synthetic as sea sponges are animals and the divers put their lives at risk every time they harvest them
    Can you recommend anything similar please ?

    • @ellencrimitrent
      @ellencrimitrent  2 года назад +1

      well I am not sure if these are actually from the ocean or manmade- ?

    • @rosemary288
      @rosemary288 2 года назад

      @@ellencrimitrent I’m thinking she’s asking for a synthetic version.
      And I believe the answer is no. Other then the sponges we use for household cleaning. (Which has its place in painting, but I’ve only use sea sponges).
      But I’m not sure of her concern for divers.
      Here in FL is a town call Tarpon Springs which is known for its sea sponge trade - and thereby draws many tourists - the economy of the town is based on both. Look it up!
      I live pretty far from tarpon springs so I haven’t been, but I bet you’d enjoy visiting there during their sponge/seafood festivals, or enjoy some on site plein air painting - which is what I’d do if I can ever get over that way!!!
