  • I am planting a Ruby Spice Summersweet Shrub (Clehtera alnifolia (Ruby Spice) in my backyard. This is a great flowering shrub that provides many seasons of interest and can be grown in part shade or sun. Summersweet prefers acidic soil that stays on the moist side. The more sun it receives the more important a moist soil area will be for this shrub. It is hardy down to zone 3 -40 to -34C (-40 to -30F). This shrub can grow to a size of 1.5m (5Feet) tall and 1.25 - 1.5 m (4-5feet) wide. It has glossy green foliage that changes to bright yellow in fall and has white buds that open to fragrant reddish pink blooms in late summer. These blooms tend to hold their colour into the autumn. Regular water, spring fertilizer, and possibly soil acidifier are all this plant needs to add beautiful interest and attract birds and pollinators to your yard.

Howdy Prairie Plantgirl and chillin' Buster!😃
Fun and interesting time planting that beautiful shrub with you. Can't wait to see the color in the stems and the blooms.😃👍
We harvested that volunteer giant pumpkin. It came in at 14 pounds. It sure was fun watching it grow.😃
Beautiful yellow lilies in the background.😃👍
I thought Buster was digging you another hole to plant in.😄 He's a really good digger.😄💕

What a great volunteer pumpkin that was!
Buster is a great digger. I am very lucky he only digs that one spot.

@@PrairiePlantgirl can clethra be planted near the house foundation or will its root be damaging to the foundation or the drain of the house? Wondering if it has big roots. Thanks!

It’s fun watching you dig a hole with your entire body weight on the shovel. At home here that ends up being my job LOL. Inevitably there is a huge rock under the exact spot that my wife picks.

I’m lucky enough to not have rocky soil. If I hit something hard to dig in it is thick sticky clay. Fortunately I’ve been working at building this soil for over a decade now so that doesn’t happen very often anymore.

We have a summersweet on the shady side of our house, and I propagated one from a sucker. Here in NS the soil is naturally acidic, so it’s pretty happy. When it blooms it gives off a lovely fragrance.

It’s great to hear you are happy with your summersweet. I have always admired them, but this is my first time growing one.

Thank you for this video!!! I have ordered 2 of these shrubs for my backyard (unfortunately I could not find any locally and I would have had to drive an hour away to try and find some at larger garden centres.) I really enjoy your videos and I live in central Alberta so I can relate to your gardening challenges.

@@PrairiePlantgirl Nice info. Can the Clethra be planted 2 feet from home foundation wall or will the roots cause damage to the house and drain? Thanks
