  • Ruby Spice Summersweet Clethra - Native, Flowering, Fragrant, Fall Color - In this video I plant three Ruby Spice Summersweet Clethra . It is one of my favorite plants for pollinators. The bees absolutely love these in the mid-summer. They are hardy in zones 4-9. You don't have to amend the native soil when planting.

    I planted a Ruby Spice during shutdown because of the fact I needed something that could tolerate wetter soil and I could stand forever and breath in the wonderful fragrance!

    Ended up buying one a few weeks ago! I have a slightly sloped area in the front of my house under a window (4-5ft under it) to grow a nice shrub and thought this would be nice! Part sun and shade, clay soil.

    I looked up this video as I planted 2 I got from Park seed as sticks. I potted them up and planted as about 15 inch plants. A year later they are about 3 ft just a single branch coming up and I hope they fill out a little and give me blooms this summer. Thank you, Jo

    Summer sweet is one of my favorite shrubs. I love the fragrance, and I work at a nursery and generally people can smell it from across the shrub lot, and will ask me what it is. I planted ‘Sugartina Crystalina’ behind my Koi pond as low hedge with ‘Big Blue’ Liriope by the waters edge.

    The house we bought last year has overgrown Burfordi Holly in front & one side. I can see they've been whacked back before. Sure would love to rip them out & put nicer shrubs in, Clethra would be great around the porch where high oak shade occurs. No budget yet for this project, still planting my hosta, ferns etc. Some are in HUGE pots, big holes but nice mature look in a hurry. Maybe next year......

    Great video, very informative. I bought two ruby spices about three years ago and they have not bloomed yet. They grow about 2 feet tall in summer and become beautiful golden yellow in fall. But every spring when I check them while I'm doing spring cleaning I see they are about a few inches tall. All the height they had in the summer is gone. Do rabbits gnaw on them? I cannot think of any other reason for these plants not to grow and get established in my garden. By the way, I live in Toronto (Canada) USDA zone 4. Would you kindly advise. Many thanks in advance.

    Just planted two last year and they did very well. However, I believe the yard bunnies loved them too and now I only have branches! One plant has a tiny sprout but the other, nothing yet. Will they survive or how can I protect over winter?

      RUclips is way better source of information than traditional t.v. Shows. The subscription entertainment has changed the way people used to watch t.v. Anything good on Hulu, Netflix or Amazon get recognition but RUclips is and will be always better. Viewers can get questions answered ( which is most important to me as novice gardener). Most importantly the “ real professionals” can give us good “ content”. For many viewers this will be destroyed on moneymaker t.v channels because they are all concerned with making money.

    Hey Jim! Congratulations!! I've noticed that when you plant perennial shrubs, you don't put them all the way in the ground and leave a little at the top. Is that the rule for most perennial shrubs, do you compensate with mulch at the top and what is the reason? Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Appreciate you!

    • @JimPutnam
      @JimPutnam  3 года назад

      Yes, I leave them up and use the mulch to finish up to the top. Works great

    What time frame are we talking about here when we talk about the eventual height of a plant? I planted my ruby spice last year, it was about 2 feet, my zone is 6, so how much growth it can roughly put on this year?

    My older home came with a ton of mature hardwoods so I pretty much deal with roots everytime I dig a hole! We've lost or cut down many of these now (at a huge expense) and have many to go, but the roots remain.

    The fragrance on this is not what I've expected having read the descriptions. t's actually reminiscent of Scepter'd Isle rose with its stinky myhr note but more rough. An aquired taste I suppose.

      Judy, I planted one in May and so far the deer haven’t touched it. We have quite a lot of them come through our property and I’ve seen their prints where they’ve been beside of the shrub, but they’ve not nipped at it as of yet.
