As far as I can determine, you're the only slow-pitch angler who has taken the time to film exactly how different jigs perform in the water. As a slow-pitch newcomer, I am VERY grateful your efforts. On a somewhat related note, could you possibly explain why short rods with really soft actions are critical to effective slow-pitch jigging? Most of the RUclips videos I've watched state that the slack-line (free-fall) portion of the technique is by far the most important part of working the jig. If so, what difference does the rod make? Isn't it the REEL that's creating the slack line and the free fall?
Appreciate that! Yea it seems most jigging rods are parabolic so you're getting power through the whole bend. I cant say I'm an expert and I use spinning reels and am usually just opening the bail and letting the jig free fall. Convention reels seem to work great as well and I'm sure that would effect the descent as you cant really totally free line the jig as easily. I actually would in the future like to use more conventional set ups jigging but for now I'm just spinning and free line on the way down.
Often times when the jigs on the bottom I'm also kind of hanging it there and it is a much slower secent between the jig being moved with the rod and let back down.
The soft action eases the transition from falling to lifting imparting more life-like action to the jig. It also treats the angler nicer over a day's fishing, imo.
It's not fair, this kind of test should be in the same weight, the weights obviously different, the first few jigs are 100 grams, and the last one is about 250 grams...
technique isn't the same each time, so it's hard to tell what's doing what.. The ocean, at the end, almost looked better than the rest, as it had a butterfly type fall.. but the others were unpredictable which may be best. I bought most of these so will be trying them soon.
@@itzyabui To be honest, I haven't had time to go fishing and practice technique much recently.. I've been getting my butt kicked at work. Since I posted that comment, I only got out 2 times. Shimano butterfly jig, worked miracles so far. A buddy I was fishing with, has been here his whole life, never saw a big King Mackerel caught on a bar. I dropped a shimano down, and on 3 of the 4 drops, caught a tile fish, a big king mackerel, then a shark.. The shark almost sawed off my double hooks and i put it away and we had to head in. I'm a huge fan of Shimano butterflies and their other weird weighted creatures, I forget the name of them. They look like bugs. Caught some big Ling Cod back out on the west coast. My all time favorite bar for catching huge fish, is still the octagon profile, solid chrome PLine bars. They have a tag that looks like a heart on them. We nailed so many fish using just those heavy ass PLine chrome bars. That's one of my all time favorite lures to use for anything.. Thanks for reminding me. I think we are going to go out fishing this weekend and I need to toss them on the boat.
@@itzyabui The P-Line Hex Bar Jig. I run them in 8 inch and other sizes, but the bigger ones just murder huge angry game fish. Trust me on this one.. you won't go wrong with them. If they don't immediately produce, change the jig style. Also, test them out and see the action near the surface, so you can get a feeling for how they fall. They're magic.. by far.

@@itzyabui Those bars were our secret weapon.. I never told anyone how we caught the monster sided lingcod we caught out there.. I never would have. We left the west coast in 2018, now I'm releasing of our fishing secrets. We fished Albacore, Halibut, king salmon, etc.. too many species to list. Those P Line bars are how we consistently caught 30 to 42 pound ling cod and a world record cabezon, which blew away all previous state records by 12 lbs. There's a tactic to using those bars for lings. You need to find the back side of deep structure. Find a lot of other rock fish.. work close to the rocks, rapidly find bottom and bump it up before you get stuck.. Always keep it within just feet of the bottom. Work the holes. You might lose some lures, yes.. especially if you aren't using stronger braid and allow the lings to rapidly shoot back into a rock and stick you. Never use super heavy braid in excess of 100lbs, if you get stuck. Go 50-80 lb braid, then to 50lb florocarbon. You only need 5 to 8 ft of floro. Mono will work, but make sure it's clear in water.. usually lings are in merky water. Make sure you keep enough of the P Lines so if you get hung up 2 or 3 times it doesn't end your entire day. They're cheap.. treat them that way.. Always work the back side of structure, steeper rocks produce the best. Try to maintain location as much as possible but with a slow drift. Also, if working lings and larger fish, use the large 24 oz lead heads, with a big hook, and those weird ass looking body, that's like a large worm with several tentacles on it.. I wish I could post a photo because I have one here. If you're up in northern california in the cooler water, don't be surprised if you hook a large ling cod one minute, then a huge halibut the next like we did. One of my largest 80 lb halibuts came off of the same technique. My largest halibut were 2 of them at the same time, same pole, but that's a whole different story. Halibut will bite the P Lines as well, and have caught them off of the same octagon chrome bars. Hope my info helps.. Structure deep, underwater steep canyons, both sides.. use a HD fish finder to ensure fish are populated. Large ling cod got large, because they prey inside of the crevices of steep reefs, instantly popping out to catch unsuspecting fish.. keep in mind, they are the wolf of the sea, and they sneak attack and will eat anything if presented correctly.. but they're attracted to those bars more than anything. Yea coulda used a little more water depth for sure, ive caught em pretty good on the squish but lately the slow pitch has been pretty good on the tunas for sure

@@c.l.smooth29 a light one might work off a pier but youll snag a lot. I know a lot of guys use bucktail jigs from shore and piers that would be a better option and also something like a yozuri crystal minnow is a good place to start.

They do for sure, the ocean cat was 250g, the butterfly was 6 oz, the flat fall was 5.6 oz, ill have to go grab the squish and the koika and double check but i think the squish was 130g and the koika was eaither a 150 or 200g

Depend are you fishing Florida waters of California Rule of thumb depending on the depth and current it’s usually 1gram per = 3 feet water I usually fish California rock fish most of the time i stick to 200 grams lures anything 600 feet or less it gets me there now depending again on the current.
Yup the flat fall looks the best but, I’m not a fish and on there day others may work... But lures catch more anglers than they will ever catch fish.... Have you ever thought. manufacturers have to keep inventing more lures so we buy em.... If you catch on 6 different lures stick to em don’t waste you’re money on others!
While this is appreciated, it doesn't reflect how the jigs will behave at deeper depths. Line drag will drastically slow the decent, providing a more level fall for most of them. Not to mention the slight effect that salt water will have vs (presumably) freshwater.

I would give the Savage Gear Squish a close second.
I like the video, only problem is no current in the pool…. Jigs will react differently in the ocean while fishing but this is a good start.

Squish are my go to. Pink Zebra Glow is my favorite followed by the Dorado.

The flatfall looks like it fouled up a couple times. Maybe that’s why they redesigned the jig and gave it a new name.

Most of the time im using 40lb but ill go heavier if im targeting bigger grouper or snapper.

Agreed that would be a good next test but a little tougher for sure! It is a saltwater pool though for what thats worth lol
