    Most people think that Lambert's scream is the scariest in the film but I find Brett's the scariest cause it sounds so real. Stanton's portrayal of terror is just so convincing. Especially with how he desperately calls out for his buddy Parker. RIP Harry Dean.

      +JMD Nelson apparently you're too stupid to understand that this is the original appearance of the Xenomorph, and the first time it's fully grown form is shown on screen.
      The actual film release reveal is much better, with less details about the creature shown until later points in the film.

    • @jaywunder13242
      @jaywunder13242 8 лет назад +3

      JMD Nelson Um, yeah, but they probably didn't want it to look like that on screen, dumbie.

    • @BeeTeeGee
      @BeeTeeGee 8 лет назад +52

      Yeah, everyone now knows what the xenomorph looks like, but in 1979 they didn't. The whole reason for the small glimpses of the creature early in the movie was to not give too much of it away. Even Ridley Scott was disappointed at the whole reveal of the creature later in the movie that it was clearly a guy in a suit. But if they revealed it like that earlier in the movie the overall impact of the creature would have suffered. The more you show something like the xenomorph, it becomes less special. It's probably why the xenomorphs lost their fear factor by the time of Aliens, we saw too much of them in that movie and seeing them get cut down by the Marines didn't help.

    • @ttv0
      @ttv0 7 лет назад +29

      Didn't the xenomorphs wipe out majority of the Marines with ease? The alien was still dangerous and a huge threat, at no point did they have an advantage over them, they were clinging onto survival they were first attacked.

  • @chalked9815
    @chalked9815 8 лет назад +286

    I don't know. The alien is supposed to have gore, but the original film scene is much more realistic. Showing less of the fully grown alien is better for the plot.

      I agree.

    • @toebeans31
      @toebeans31 5 лет назад +4

      The original film scene was very much so realistic yes, but you don't need gore just to have a frightening movie. This shows that the alien uses it's tail for more than what fans think it likes to do just because of the breeding it's race. This shows that the tail was used to bring it's victims closer in and seeing Ripley and Parker running forward and shouting his name explain why they told Dallas that they saw him being taken into the air ducts this scene was in the original book so it was accurate

    • @ryans413
      @ryans413 5 лет назад +1

      Less is more with this film for sure this scene still scary regardless I like both versions but I am kinda glad it was cut down a little cause at this point of the film we see that it’s grown and it’s more of a surprise when you just see the head come down then the whole body.

      @darkprose 5 лет назад +8

      Yeah. The camera lingers and pans across so much hardware and mechanisms and byzantine technology, when you do see the alien, you might easily take it to be just another cool detail of the _Nostromo,_ not the pale and robust worm that burst from Kane’s chest. But it makes sense that the alien would look like its host _and_ the ship. Where did the alien get all that mass from? It didn’t get it from the crew, obviously, since they were still alive at this point. I think the movie suggests that the alien somehow absorbed energy and matter from the ship itself. The animal that takes Brett would no longer be just “Kane’s son,” but a child of the _Nostromo_ as well.

      Not to mention that it's never clear that the creature eats anything, it attacks viciously, yes, but consumes its preys? No, not as far as we can tell, so why assume tha it would need nourishment to grow? I certainly never did.

    In the theatrical release, they should have at least left in the scene where Ripley and Parker run in and see a glimpse of the alien, the blood dripping down onto Parker would also have been great to see. Also, love Harry Dean Stanton's acting here, his stunned/shock response to first seeing the alien is great, it's so sad when he yells one last time for his friend Parker, poor Brett :(

    • @KeldorDAntrell
      @KeldorDAntrell 8 лет назад +10

      I disagree for a couple of reasons. The scene is so quiet that Ripley and Parker must have been a long way off. This is implied by the long intro which built suspense as Brett moved further and further away. For them to come running in would have contradicted the former sense of isolation. It would also suggest that the ship was much smaller than it is which would make hunting the alien down seem easier which would then diminish the scene of Dallas entering the labyrinth of air ducts.
      Also, don't you think Yaphet Kotto's acting was off? He looked as if he was expecting to be splattered with blood and felt it wasn't coming down quickly enough so that he was forced to spread his chest in order to *catch* the droplets to make the scene work how it was writtten (in another outtake I've seen he gets a bucket of blood dumped on him in one go).

      Arthur Workman in that case imagine: YOU had to go hunt this thing (keep in mind you know nothing about this creature at the time only that its "small") and then you stumble upon this man-sized creature that was just watching you the whole time, and its only intention is to kill you and everyone else on your ship. Fear can do a lot to a person. It can make them indecisive, or scare them stiff, or it can make them fight or make them flee. Not everyone is the same when they face fear, Brett was simply too afraid to move.

    Yes, this is pieced together from outtakes, etc. we've seen in various home video releases over the years, but as this is a fan edit, I have no issue with the length of the scene. Indeed, it provides a greater look at the quite comprehensive material Ridley Scott and Terry Rawlings had at their disposal in the editing room for 'Alien', and helps to illuminate further their editorial decisions. Clearly, Scott shot a LOT of alien footage, and the decision to only offer the audience very abstract and tight glimpses of the creature in the finished film was a choice clearly made in post-production.
    It's nice to have all this material assembled in one place, and to see how significantly differently the film could have played out with another director and/or editor. Thanks for your hard work, DestronTC - and I would love to see the final film reassembled and made available to fans in this way. :)

    They cut more than an hour off the film to make it two hours in the final release.
    And while we can all agree that this cut (thank you for posting, btw) was a little long-winded with weird cuts and didn't flow), there was another non-theatrical release version on HBO about 4 years ago that showed the Alien merely hanging above as if asleep... the rest is the same as the theatrical release except until Parker and Ripley look upward and Parker is splattered with blood. It was enough, and it explained why Parker - in the theatrical release - knew that this "thing was big, like a man..." This should've made it into the final release.

      I think Ridley’s original cut of Brett’s death needed no improvement, but I would not want to be without all the stuff that ended up on the cutting room floor. Not sure how other people feel about it, but the scariest part of this extended version is Harry Dean Stanton performance. It’s like he’s building to some mindless scream, reverting to a child or an infant, puffing out his cheeks like a bull about to charge, and then he begins to whimper! How often does a victim in a horror movie literally whimper, whimper like a frightened dog? That was such a Lovecraftian reaction. Lovecraft’s narrators often just lose their minds when confronted with ancient and cosmic horrors. Stanton’s performance here feels like that, as if his mind could not cope with what he was seeing, watching the almost gentle way the alien reaches out to his head. For a second, his mind returns long enough to scream for Parker. Though the alien is about to physically attack and take him, the psychological attack of the alien’s sheer presence is devastating.

    A lot of the additional material is from the cutting room, the original thought process was that the ALIEN could run up and down using the chains like a spider, so I think the shots where it is just suspended like a circus act detracts from the tension of the scene and I can see why it was omitted. It is always incredible to see this creature up close, but sometimes less is more I think

    THIS is why the first film is always gonna be my favorite out of the series. The subliminal sexuality the Alien has, in my opinion, is really shown here. The way its head and face rises up and it's dripping with saliva and how it's almost elegantly observing Brett just seconds before killing him. That's what makes the Big Chap a horrifying piece of art in a way. It pulls off being fluid and graceful but equally violent and frightening on so many levels.

    • @mambatabac
      @mambatabac 2 года назад +3

      Yeah - I mean Aliens is my favourite film OAT in terms of pure watchability... but when it comes to doing this creature justice none of the other films even come close to the original. The Alien here is so gracefull, so unpredictable... and is in absolutely no hurry whatsoever in murdering the crew. It even seems intrueged by its fellow humans, studying them for a while and touching them before violently murdering them (or not, as the coccoon scene shows). Ridley Scott did a masterful job of bringing H.R. Giger's art to life in terms of behaviour and tone. We will never have a cinematic monster this utterly terrifying ever again.

    The size, toughness, vicious cruelty, and deadly power of this xenomorph from the first 'Alien' as compared to later versions in the subsequent films has often been remarked upon from several observers and sources. There's a theory that this xeno was in fact a 'drone' as opposed to the 'warrior' caste of the subsequent films - note its slightly larger size, smooth, as opposed to ridged, skull carapace, possibly even greater strength and toughness, and possibly slightly higher intelligence. The 'warriors' of the later films are mainly quick strike and attack swarm creatures, conditioned to defend the hive en masse at all costs, while the somewhat slower yet stronger drones are the 'workers' who build and maintain the hive and do all the hard labor and 'heavy lifting' at the will of the queen. It is also theorized that the drones, unlike the warriors, are somewhat more intelligent and have the quasi-hermaphroditic ability to slowly convert biological/organic matter outside their own species into viable reproductive vessels to propagate the species in the absence if a queen - as evidenced by the 'egg-morphing' of Brett and Dallas literally into eggs - an ability, which this theory presumes, the warrior caste lacks.

You can see Brett is trying to assert his dominance as the alpha male by puffing his cheeks and trying to stare the alien down....unfortunately, this didn't work out too well for Brett because the alien submits to no man. The story is that Harry Dean Stanton had not ever played 'fear' before onscreen, and he was unsure how to proceed. But it's obvious his instincts as an actor were right, as it's clear that Brett simply doesn't know what he is looking at (although there is some form of primal recognition that this 'thing' is exceptionally dangerous). How do you convey a reaction to the utterly unknowable? But it's entirely in keeping with character: Brett isn't a verbal person, and so HDS plays his reaction as reverting to some kind of monosyllabic groans, as befits a prey item about to be devoured by a huge set of teeth. :)
      The editing in the original scene also attempts to reproduce Brett's confused perspective: the extremely tight (and almost abstract) close-ups of the alien's head and teeth deny easy assimilation of what we're seeing. This is why this extended fan edit is illuminating, as it shows how drastically Ridley Scott reigned in the alien onscreen, preferring instead to distort and infer its appearance - even when the Giger design was so overwhelmingly unique and original. Most other directors would have gone straight to the 'money shot', thus sacrificing everything to please the audience.

    @KeldorDAntrell 8 лет назад +3

    Extremely frightening! Better than what was in the film *except* that this really gives away the appearance of the alien more than would have been right for the whole film.
    I love Harry Stanton's unusual vocal response. Although I can't figure out what would justify such a response it made the scene more frightening and realistic somehow, perhaps simply because it didn't conform to expectations. Was the idea that he wanted to try to be tough and fight it but found himself incapable of moving and unable even to muster up a battle cry?
    Another possible reason why they didn't extend the scene was that given the amount of blood that was evident from the first attack (which wasn't shown in the film in the final cut) Brett would probably have lost consciousness and been incapable of screaming or thrashing about. Whether he would have been killed the instant the alien's tongue smashed his skull is actually more probable than what they went with i.e. Brett being able to have an extended death scream.

The whole thing fully conveyed the nightmare of being paralysed and gradually eaten away/coverted into the alien nest, fully able to experience every moment of it. Dallas' moans were unlike anything I'd heard in a film before. That scene would have been the worst part of Ripley's whole experience. Even if she hadn't had a relationship with Dallas, she would never get that nightmare vision out of her head.

    I saw the original in the year of it's release when I was 9 years old. This movie was so horrific, word of mouth was more effective advertising than the official advertising - in Australia anyway. It was the subject of conversation - a must watch for horror movie buffs and raising respect for the sci-horror genre.
    At 54 years old, I now get to see for the first time this extended version and I am lost for words. Lost for words as to how this was not included from the beginning.
    It is pure extreme horror, but combined with the violence and gore that even at my desensitized age from a regular course of sci/horror fiction, find myself shocked.
    I can feel Brett's fear; followed by a sense of his hopelessness in his futility of growling at this purely evil creature (hoping to ward it off wile maintaining self restraint so as not to aggravate it any further), followed by the suffering he goes through in the creatures crushing grip and creature's tail (proceeding between his legs, up his back to his neck at which time his pain so extreme his self-restraint fails by his growling transforming into outbursts of screaming), followed by the inevitable "kiss" of death.
    Horror movies and even real-life events have shown some pretty awful ways to go and even in consideration of all of those, this would be a death preceded by cruel and unusual punishment inflicted solely to torture its prey to maximize its pleasure at inflicting maximum suffering.
    I can see why there is the opinion that H R Giger was into the very dark side of the occult and this creature both in form and behavior may be inspired from.

    I love the original scene so much... it's one of the best creature reveals maybe in any scifi/horror film. But, I do like seeing some of the experiments they did with the movement of the xenomorph. Originally, this thing was truly alien. It didn't move like a person, necessarily, or some wild beast. Its movements, its thoughts, its motivations, were truly alien, and they tried to capture that.
    This footage and the footage just before Lambert's/Parker's deaths where it crab-walks into the room--to me at least--tell of a much more frightening creature than the 'bugs' we ended up getting in James Cameron's film (which I also love).
    Still, good job on this. I wouldn't change the original scene at all, but it's nice to see where their thought processes were going, and what was lost in translating the sequels.

      Torni 3945 I think it's because this one wasn't a drone like those ones. Notice the different head (That might just be because of the director) I don't know, I just like to think of it like that.

      TheReal MovieFreak Actual Drones were originally going to appear in Aliens but
      during pre-production the creature's smooth carapace was removed out of
      fear the fragile dome would crack during filming, a modification that
      gave rise to the Warrior caste.

      Torni 3945 perhaps it's because he's not connected to a hive mind like the ones in alien

      Torni 3945 the aliens in the second one were not mindless. It may have seemed that way since they were all acting as soliders who would do anything to protect their queen. But they were certainly still smart. Remember the scene in aliens when the power goes out? And ripley says they cut the power? And hudson was like "hiw can they cut the power? Theyre animals!" That shows that the aliens were still much more intelligent then the average predator.

    They were very smart for leaving the xenomorph in the shadows when they released the movie. That being said, seeing this footage is fucking awesome.

    I think it would've been just fine in the movie. The more like this, the better. Scary! And I don't think they showed too much of the alien to keep it scary. I mean, we've known what it looks like since the 70s and we're still watching them!

    In the original theatrical release, the scene where the alien puts its tail between Brett´s legs was cutted and used at Lambert and Parker´s death scene!

    When I first saw this movie, the eerie otherworldly music from this scene (the film version of this scene) really gives me chills, and the way it was cut matched the music so well. This scene just doesn't have that for me. This scene is creepy, but not terrifying. Too much time to gauge Bret's reaction, too much time seeing what we're afraid of... makes it less visceral.

    I guess I don't understand why he makes zero effort to get away. In the actual cut of the film he's the victim of a surprise attack and so it makes more sense.

    The cut scene is scarier and works better for the move...after a long 1/2 hour opener with nothing happening, its good to have a death that's brutal, alone, dark, instant. BUT this scene is an amazing idea, probably by the actor. We've been long out of the food chain but I'm guessing when cornered by a predator, you'd revert back to being a scared animal. He first growls/snares like a cat raising his fur. When he sees it isn't working, he whimpers, begging for mercy. Great idea.

      That's what I wondered - that his intentions in his head may have been to fight ferociously but he found his body rooted to the spot and his vocal cords so constricted with fear that he could bearly utter a sound - which, incidentally, is a bit like in a nightmare when you try to scream for help.
