SAWMILL ASSEMBLY - Swingblade Sawmill BUILD Ep.11

  • Building a circular sawmill from scratch. The function of the mill is in its name "swingblade" - the blade swings 90 degrees making it possible to cut both ways while moving the carriage up and down the log resulting in dimensional lumber in one pass. I built a chainsaw mill ten years ago and milled lumber that I used for my cabin / sauna house project. Then I built a bandsaw mill five years ago and used the cut lumber to build a partition in my barn I currently call my workshop. Both of them worked great, bandsaw mill was faster than chainsaw mill for sure. But I think I can make an even faster mill and swingblade sawmill in my opinion is just what I'm looking for. There are different types of swingblade sawmills, one type utilizes a railway system where the saw carriage rides on rails so both rails are in the way when loading the logs. This is a beam-type mill where the saw carriage is suspended on a beam over the log that sits on the ground fixed by a couple of wedges so it doesn't roll off while cutting. There is no need to clamp the log down. Cut depth and width adjustments are all made on the sawmill beam end frames. I think this design is ingenious!
    This sawmill build is based on www.turbosawmill.com "Manual Mill" design and it is patent pending.

    Very impressive, nice smooth action with no binding or jerking. The truss beam is light and rigid, good design and execution, the test cuts will be interesting.

      The beam could've been made from heavier materials though FIY if you decide to build your own.😀

    Maybe use the old collapsed roof behind for a open sided shelter. And great to see the final long saw built.

    Its just as well you're a crazy young man my friend, this old man is sitting in his nice warm living room enjoying a glass of red wine watching you work in the snow... 🤯
    my knee aches, my knuckles ache and my fingers are numb just watching you...
    I know what the news projects will be though!
    A pad for the sawmill to rest on, of course created using your own rock crusher and then a roof over the sawmill created using your sawmill.
    I make light of my admiration for you, and yet I do mean it with the greatest of respect because your hard work is always to better the lives of you and your family on the homestead/farm.
    All the very best of regards from (a dry and only slightly cold) Scotland

    I love your simple and robust solutions.
    I would have used a massive drive shaft, which would be heavy as hell and had to be supported in the middle.
    The alluminum tube, you used, is much lighter and could nevertheless transmitt some momentum.
    Great.👍

    Having seen an old mixer with an control wheel for emptying, it seems like a good idea to use the same type of wheel to control the saw. I don't know if someone hasn't already mentioned it, or if you haven't had this idea in your head for a long time. I admire and cheer!

    Nice work Donn! Amazing job you did on this mill, looks like a perfect manufactured kit. The time and effort it takes to think this entire kit out and then to build it is incredible, then throw in all the camera work and edit is an entirely different job. Thanks for the hard work and bringing us along. Now if that snow would go away so you can start making sawdust!

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, Mike! I'll try and make sawdust this week if everything goes as planned.🤞 Small things to do still like wiring and getting a log from the forest. But if the weather allows let's hope for some action.🙏😛 Yup, making videos really gets in the way of the actual work as you perfectly know. Could achieve everything 2x faster if there wasn't for filming.🤓

    Моё вам уважение. Отличная работа Донн, станок получился интересный и хорошо продуманный, осталось посмотреть как он покажет себя в работе. Жалко зима наступает, снег выпал, наверное не получится уже поработать на новом станке в этом году. Ну ничего, буду ждать продолжение. Всего Вам самого хорошего.

    Great project. When you start testing if there is too much deflection in the truss as the motor and blade carriage roll across while cutting consider spot welding a full skin of thin sheet metal to each side of your truss beam, like a unibody frame. You will figure it out.

    You may need to add cables for support in the other direction. You can see the beam dip down when you move the gantry across.

      You are right. In my humble opinion they are mounted upside down.

    • @wilsonmetry
      @wilsonmetry 6 месяцев назад

      Yes, the cables are in compression in their current configuration. They need to be flipped 180 degrees so they are in tension as the truss flexes downward. Or just flip the whole truss if possible. source: am architect and I have designed several similar structures.

      @@wilsonmetry I was wondering if maybe he was using the cables to correct a arch from manufacturing. hes not a dumb guy and wouldnt do that if there wasnt a reason.

      @@curtism7203 agree, he is not a dumb guy for sure. I couldn't see a reason they would be as he has them. Maybe he'll clear it up for us! :)

    • @herrkull2229
      @herrkull2229 2 месяца назад

      As you can see, if you look carefully, his beam is slightly arched upwards, so that compensation of deformation is probably too much in his case. So he certainly would have wanted to correct it by cabling it in the opposite direction...

    All the manufacturers of these saw mills should be watching your videos because you design better products than they do you should mass produce that you probably make a lot of money.

      My sawmill is based on Turbosawmill design and they are mass producing this sawmill. And I hope they make a lot of money with this product because it's ingenious.👍
