Honest opinion is what I like, we can´t love every song we hear. First time I heard this I had same feeling but after so many times of hearing this, I like it more and more.
Personally, I think the music and Floors vocals on this song fits with the dystopian feel of the lyrics, and it did take a couple of listens to 'get' all of it, but I like the song. That said, is this my alltime favourite NW song? Probably not, and I know that the last couple of albums have divided opinion (we all know that the Nightwish fans can be...err...opinionated, shall we say?). I dont think the absence of Marko was the issue on this song - I suspect we may feel his absence more when we hear the album as a whole, but I dont think this would have been a 'Marko song' even if he were still in the band. Bands that have been around as long as NW do evolve as they age, and their sound will evolve with them, especially when there have been significant line-up changes. I think people would complain if they simply tried to make albums that sound exactly like 'Once' over and over again, and I think there would definitely be complaints if they simply tried to 'replace' Marko, so Im actually kind of glad they havent tried to do that - he's too good and too beloved to simply replace. To be honest, I think part of the problem is that lots of the NW fanbase have such specific and high expectations of what Nightwish songs/ albums should sound like, that Im not sure even Nightwish themselves can neccessarily live up to it sometimes. I am still looking forward to hearing the album in its entirety next month, so we will see what the verdict is then :)
I admire your honesty Joel. It's easy to like for the sake of liking. That said, "The Day of..." for me is epic new level Nightwish and I couldn't of asked or wished for anything better from a new release. Thank you Joel. 🙏😊👍❤️

Unlike Perfume of the Timeless this went straight to my playlist. I'm a simple metalhead and this is a catchy and simple tune. Not for everyone, but works for me. I also like what I assume to be the message.
Thank you your react. I wonder why Tuomas Holopainen should do something again what he did before. I like to dig meanings of lyrics and hope I will understand what he wants to tell. Many Nightwish songs makes me think and I like to find new ideas in my little human brains. Did somebody said that everything should be easy??
Yeah I love the song and the video. They went on a bit of a different direction but they are just evolving and maybe it won't be what some purist will like but its what a Tuomas wanted to do. Everything is done on purpose and there is no bad engineering or whatever else some are saying. And I agree with you that live Floor would sound more up front.
This is the second single of the new upcoming album Yesterwynde, which will be released 20th of september. Tuomas announced that this single will have a typical 80ies vibe which it definitely has. I hear influences clearly by Pink Floyds The Wall and Queens Night at the oprea. In the chorus right after the instrumental part and Choir I hear Agneta from ABBA in Floors voice. Story has elements of George Orwells 1984 and the video also is directing this way. Over all you need to hear it several times - like mostly in Nightwish songs - to get the full enjoyment with it. Greetings from Germany!
Nightwish is taking a different path than the one we know, it is evolving thanks to Tuomas into different sounds that I appreciate a lot I must say. About the lack of Marko, who marked the history of NW, I say that the world moves on, Tarja is missing, Annette is missing, Jukka is missing and Marko is missing but Nightwish are still here. Greetings from Italy
A new way to go for Nightwish, with the children choir, having as much singing time as Floor almost i belive, Floor is doing some fast phrasing here to, something like she does in the song Shoemaker, kind off i think. The Ill starred kids of your junkyard thats us humans right, People today are getting told all kind of doomsday things, AI and war end the world, but this song says, the end is fear, its not near, armagedon aint coming tommrow, so life your life, Also notice that Floor joins the kids choir at end and connect that to her charecter she is in video, she realize something during video, Toumas said so in a interview i watched.. I didnt read the book 1984 written by George Orwell, but the song got reference to that book i belive. At first listen i needed another listen, at 3th listen the song got me, and i started like the children choir, i actually think its a pretty good song, and something not heard like this from NW before, now i listened to the song many times! This is not a Empuu shine song, there is heavy guitar rhytm in the middle section and end, but not the big Empuu solo, but i also think this song dosent need it, because the Children choir takes spotlight instead,.. The title the day off.. is missing telling what its the day off, so i think this is where you can put in the optimistic view of the song, as a listener, if you like to, and hear the song that way, the listener decide what its the day off. The original idea was this one to be 1st single, but then Tuomas decided it dhould be Perfume of the timelees, and this 2nd.
The idea of missing Marko i don't understand. He is not a member of Nightwish anymoore. Thats how it is now and forever maby. Nothing stays the same...Nightwish is evolving maby in a direction you dont like so much. That i can understand. Me personally like this a lot. You beeing honest is great. Gold medal for that. Cheers from a finn in Sweden.👍😃
Marko was great for the band and you cant replace him. He was moore than great but I dont miss him..Whats the point ? Nightwish is progressing...Nothing stays the same.
First impression wasn't good just listening to the music itself... But watching the music video, it makes sense now. It kind of reminds me of Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, but less metal and more synth
This is one that grows on you. Curious what you think after several more listenings. Also, in terms of grit from marko, are you referring to his bass playing or are you missing his vocals?
Honest and to the point as usual. The lyrics are clever and thought provoking but as you say the song itself lacks the spark that we have come to expect with Nightwish.
Hi Joel. I think the video actually detracted from my experience here and may have affected yours. My first 8 or 10 listens have all been just the music, and with the lyrics, as it is a deep one, as usual. I actually love this song and it has grown on me with each listen. Except this one. This is my first view of the video and, frankly, I found it hard to marry my interpretation of the lyrics to the screen visuals. I suggest putting on some headphone and looking at the lyrics for a personal listen. This really is a very good track. Very thought provoking. As for Floor, taking into account English is her 2nd language, her enunciation in this is superb. Rock on, Brother 🤘😎🤘
I'm with you. You can't hear Floor in the choruses. I'll tolerate the kids singing the first chorus, but after that, I'm kinda done with it. I want to hear Floor and she's relegated to a back up singer on this song. I'm so disappointed....again.
The lyrics gives me Anti- conspiracy feels like the age old Sky is Falling. We all like srory telling and drama but i believe the children suffer when we delude their minds with drama and fear mongering instaed of possitivity. But modern world technology mean someone's Ideaology can be spread everywhere and is out of hand. Although we have been let down by Governments and misguided by some Scientists we become very distrustful and paranoid in this modern world.
Unpopular opinion… I think this song would have sounded better with Annette. Her voice sounds kind of new wave 80’s. Would have fit perfectly with this.
Thanks for reaction - because of you I at least listen to new song. Dark Passion Play is a so-called commercial record - still it was good music. What you have heard is meaningless, soulless elevator music - artificial nonsense. While Anette is mocked as a singer, Floor is even worse on the records. And what about the loss of Marko - everything else can be replaced, besides Tuoma, is/was Marko. Your reaction was good, thanks again for that. I'm only sad that I've listened to the two latest songs.
I agree with your take, Joel. I don't like Floor's vocals here, and I see I'm not alone in that feeling. IMO floor needs to sing the verses in a lower register and add some grit to her delivery so the subject sounds ominous. As is it sounds too "happy and content" for the lyrics.
I'm with you on the Marko being missing. It's just not the same without his presence. Plus, im not a fan of Troys' vocals. He doesn't gel with Floor at all, in my opinion. It does grow on you. There are better tracks on the album.
Sorry to say, but I can't get into this song. It's the fourth time watching it listen to it but I just can't get into it. Hopefully next song is better. Love your opinion 🖖
Not a one listen banger - totally different style, IMHO the video is not good, it disturbs the song itself. Listen only the song/music few times and the song grows into you easily, only react once and it does not hit you - a challenging one this one, love that they are trying different styles and not just make songs replicated from Nemo, GLS, The Greatest Show On Earth and take an easy bucks in and satisfy many "I know NW, this is NW and this is how I want them to sound forever", because everyone would just be bored with them after a while..
I totally agree with your reaction. It's not one of their top songs for sure. Seems like they are putting more emphisis on the visuals of the video than the music.
I kinda agree with you Joel. However I do like what this track pretends to be about namely; fear mongering. Musically, it's kind of a no-man's-all, babbling on and on with no real climax. And yet it must have been quite a job to arrange all this. What I really disagree with is the Marko chapter. Marko, no matter how good he is as a singer, is finished for me. He says that the music industry is doing wrong, and that he no longer wants to be a part of it, at the same time he continues solo in that same industry. To me that smells like hypocrisy. And then I am very harsh towards such a person. “If you're so annoyed by something, quit it altogether, and go do other things that you do enjoy.”
I’m dissapointed too. The sound is much smaller than what you usually get with Nightwish (grand, cinematic, epic etc). Honestly, I think it was a bit boring even.
I think its a great song and o man i am getting tired about missing Marko pffff Marko is 4 years out off the band now. I hoop its not gonna be the same as some old nightwish fans who still saying how they mis Tarja after 19 years. Come on . If you mis Marko so mutch go listen too his solo work. I m not missing him at all. He left the band not in a good way and dissepaird just before the virtual shows in 2020 . I don t forget that. And Jukka is a better bass player.the voice off Marko and Floor togetter were great but that is over know. So get over it
Clip and music: bland & boring. Floor and Emppu underused (again). Marko's metal presence sorely missed. The poppy drums just plodding along, lacking any kind of groove. The video - in which nothing much is happening other than NW puppets falling - aptly symbolises the fall of this "band" (the Metal Mozart's solo project disguised as one). Floor should get out a.s.a.p. after their 30th anniversary. She's way better than to submit to a composer consistently underusing her stellar vocal abilities, forcing her once again to use awkward phrasing in an attempt to match lyrics to metre. Read her Aardschok interview abt missing Marko, overusing a mediocre singer like Troy and the touring hiatus. Finally, after playing nice for way too long ("Tuomas challenged me, etc" the H:N blabla), she's giving off very diplomatically phrased, yet very strong vibes that she's had enough. Good for her!
@@nicholew350 There's a H:N interview (in Finnish) in which Tuomas confirmed my initial suspicions, i.e. that he can just throw whatever lyrics he fancies at Floor because he knows that she'll make it work. For the habitual Metal Mozart drones it does, but not for everyone. You don't need another self-serving open letter when decimating a vocal giant by "killing her softly" is also an option.
Like always, never listen to a NW song without an understanding of the lyrics. In this case the music fits perfectly and gives you that special feeling only Tuomas is able to create in his songs. And yes, NW isn't "Once" anymore, but fantastic. And like Tuomas said in his latest interview. Best listening is the whole album in one turn to enjoy the complete story. I can't waiti for that experience now, but I got an idea by listening "the Day of... " and "Perfume..." in a row😂.
Doesn't really apply to Joel I think, but one of the problems people are having is misplaced expectations. Nightwish has become unapologetically prog even though they have already been for many years a contrarian album-emphasis band, just like all of the prog legends. However many new fans are stationary Floorfans first and expect a singles rock and pop-metal emphasis that will never happen. To them I suggest you more strongly support Floor's solo career and help make her inescapable to the world's attention. That guarantees you more albums and bigger solo tours. She has a unique songwriter's voice to go with her powerful physical voice and I encourage both. Meanwhile stop Karening and/or gatekeeping Nightwish, let the band continue to evolve as they have always done. The album isn't even out yet and I'd wager by mid-October most of the indignant are going to be gushing over it.
For the first time I 'm disappointed about your reaction. The evolution of Nightwish is great. Of course you may have your own meaning about a song. You like it or not. Listen to it more and you will like it more. And Marko is out of the band. I don't miss him. Jukka did a great job on the bass.
@@milton1448 I understand the sentiment. Nightwish admitted can't replace Marco but they chose to continue. Fans expect them to make every song the same. Not fair. You have to decide on your own but saying Marco is missing is not helpfull. One thing band can do but are not is play new songs life to generate more excitement. I thing we have to wait for whole album. Human Nature was very different album but became popular because of live shows .
@@jerrybk1 My problem are the so-called "gatekeepers" who try to control the narrative. Reality is bands often miss on some albums, it's not the end of the world nor a reflection on their earlier works. This new material (so far) feels derivative and too poppy for many, thus the negative reviews. Their "narrative" of Human Nature was enough in this vein IMO. I can see why they are not going to tour this material. I don't see any correlation of stating the band misses Marko as "not being helpful." It's simply the reality of the situation.
@@milton1448 ok but I don't consider it a miss but everyone has own opinion which I respect. I have not heard the whole album so reserve judgement . But I am a fan so I admit can't be real objective. I did really enjoy Perfume of Timeless. One thing important. I listen to a song at least 30 times to see if will grow on me. Listening once or twice is not good enough for Nightwish. Many did not like Elan but it became one of their most popular songs. Many prefer Tarja over Floor, but I prefer Floor but love both. Losing Marco maybe caused focus to change but I don't think it's a bad thing.
It absolutely grows on you. I've been singing it to myself all day .

LYRICS:
Take shelter, skies are humming
Harmageddon, 2nd coming
War of the worlds, the end of history
Take shelter, floods are rising
The Wrath of thunderous drumming
End of days
For mankind, and for your kin
Fill those empty moments, fear more
In this grave new world of `84
Fast death, last breath,
A.I. to kill us all
Horse waste covering London
Martians among us, Y2K
Hoard, all aboard, the end is near
We are the ill-starred kids of your junkyard
The innocent islands unscarred
The moment of our nadir
So many times passed the due date
Too late, gather up
It`s the day of
Purgatory, same old story
Cower before a caliphate glory
The Big Read of today will gallow you,
Keep you small
Here’s a million ropes for the hangman
Nightmare cavalcade for the sandman
Mind virus, fear of the well-known
Keep us safe
We are too many for our Mother
Crops will burn so why bother
A new strain sent you back into your cave
Obey, stay away, cover up
Fear the words, feeding humanity
Hide the unshot guns
And the crippled dancing
It`s a long road to a dreamworld
All the pain and suffering to feel for
It`s there, but yours is an empty sermon
Made up the sun rising
Made sense of equus flying
Time for another fear made real
A need to feel dread, gloom, awe
A lust for never-ending doom porn
A man-shaped evil walks among us
Obey, stay away, cover up
Fear the words, the feed, feed the human beast
Hide the unshot guns
The end is fear
Thanks for lyrics

Great and honest reaction! 100% agree with all you said. 🤗
I find it's got a strong ABBA feel to it, the time of the album The Visitors. Also the instrumental part reminds me a lot of Gethsemane.
This had a very dystopian feel to it. I liked it. It wasn't over the top. I think it's because it's not the typical Nightwish sound we're used to.

Yes, awkward phrasing. Toumas has done this with her on all of the albums with her. I don’t like it. It’s like he’s out of ideas.
If you expect more of the same from NW,you might be disappointed. This band dont do commercial copypaste music 🙂
Miss Marko?
Dumb thing to say.
You seemed to be in a shit mood, frankly.
Best go have coffee.
Song doesn’t need grit
For the first time I 'm disappointed about your reaction. The evolution of Nightwish is great. Of course you may have your own meaning about a song. You like it or not. Listen to it more and you will like it more. And Marko is out of the band. I don't miss him. Jukka did a great job on the bass.
NW is missing another gritty male voice. Jukka is fine on bass but doesn't fill the hole left by Marko.
Marco left. He wan not kicked out. We have to stop saying he is missing. Nightwish continuing on fine
A matter of opinion
You lost Nightwish now, so goodbye.
Haven't liked any of the stuff from the new album.
You're not alone. Glad when they move on from this phase
meh so far with these songs. They should have ended this phase with Human Nature IMO
