I needed a small freezer so I took three dorm refrigerators home from the transfer station, town dump, and tested them for a week. The woodgrain one that's substantially heavier and uses less electricity is now my mini freezer and it is an R-12 unit like my woodgrain window AC and dehumidifier. All built in the US with US components and should last another 35-40 years. Win win win. Woodgrain is cool now. Thanks for helping me save my sister a substantial amount of money and for educating us.
I wish I saw this video ten years ago. I was stupid, and bought an early (and very expensive) LG French Door fridge with built in ice maker. The ice maker was enclosed in one of the doors, and the ice maker bin would often get ice coming out at an angle, which didn't get it close to the auger to dispense the ice. All you had to do was open the ice maker panel and just take out the bin and shake it. Not a big deal. About three years in, the stupid ice maker panel would freeze over from the inside out, so the door was stuck shut due to ice build up around the plastic latch. For eight years, every few months when the ice got stuck, I would have to pry, shave, or pick off the ice around the latch. I used hair dryer (didn't work, melted it a little bit), hair dryer without heat (took forever, but worked), but most often, screwdriver or multi-tool to carve out the ice behind the latch. If I only knew about the steamer!!! That would've made my life a lot easier, and a few less grey hairs. Great video! PS: Don't buy Korean made appliances, they suck.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Especially for taking the extra time to make demos! My steamer wasn't like yours and it took a long time BUT IT WORKED! I'm glad we put in the extra time. Because of that we avoided a bill that would have been $250 JUST FOR THE TECH TO COME TO OUR HOUSE.
Okay, I just tried it with a steamer I had. it worked perfectly, took maybe five minutes of steam . Cleaned up a bit and now back to normal. The ice build up was between bottom of housing and the tray. THASNK YOU!!!
I LOVE YOU! I am an old lady, and I understand every word you said and how to do exactly what you explained about the WHOLE ice maker! That is a big deal! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Best and most helpful video ANYWHERE!! ( ice maker is Samsung)
Thank you so much for this helpful video! My GE side by side ice maker drawer was frozen shut and after watching this video, I used my steamer to defrost it and was able to open the drawer after about 10 minutes or so. Thank you!!!!!!!!!
To defrost our chest freezer that does not defrost itself I empty it and then use my shop vac as a blower and place the hose in the freezer and shut the lid as far as it can. In about 5 minutes it's all water. As he says here the key is moving air. More specifically moving cold air out to replace it with warm air.
I really like the Korn reference. My company provides us with a pretty good Steamer, I better start using distilled water in it. I usually use the filtered water from the fridge if the dispenser is working.
I had sooo many issues with my Samsung in door ice maker. Every 2 weeks Fd, hair dryer and wooden spoon. I got frustrated and just turned it off in the UI. Didn’t realize that there were countertop ice makers, I’ll definitely be looking at those!
Had customers ruin the liner on the wall and made the ice maker almost impossible to remove when they used a hair dryer. The best way to fix these is shove the thing out the door and replace it. Stay away from bottom freezers and buy the less expensive model, will not hit as bad when you have to throw them out in 6 to 8 years. The more money you spend gets you more features but a shorter life expectancy.
Many thanks!! Model RS267TDBP side by side. Could not remove bin- stuck in door due to ice blockage which I now happens weekly. I usually try to remember to manually close the gasket (which should close on its own) after taking ice which helps a bit. Didn’t even have the nozzle type clothes steamer but a flat head one - the steam seemed to work after not even that long - maybe 1 min?
It's worth mentioning to NEVER put Samsung fridges in Energy Saver mode. That's part of the problem that leads to having to pull apart the entire insides to steam the fan that is responsible for cooling the fridge part.
Darn! I was hoping this would tell me how to take my interior ice maker out of my freezer to give me more space for food! It is an old fridge without the fancy stuff. I hate the unused ice maker that came in my fridge. I hate it. Never connected it to water. It takes up space I could use!
Get a small chest freezer fill the bottom with gal jugs or other containers with water in them, this mass of ice will make the freezer run less often if you don't have enough food to fill it up plus if the power goes out that mass of ice will act like a cooler & keep your food frozen for a long time.
Sadly, its going to vary so much from model to model, I can't answer it. Some like, say, a Frigidaire Gallery, its just a few screws. But for something like a Samsung, its going to be VERY dicey because of the refrigerant loop thats embedded in the housing.
@@bensappliancesandjunk Hi Ben, thanks for the video. A tech just removed the ice maker from our old Frigidaire and my spouse is concerned about the exposed end of the harness. Is it safe to leave it as is? Maybe cover with electrical tape? The tech assured us that that is not necessary, that it wouldn't shock you if you tried, but spouse remains unconvinced and wants to put the non-working ice maker back in. Thanks.
My husband has apparently melted ours somewhere trying to get the ice off. Is there no fix once melted? We had the ice maker replaced but it’s still not working. Should we even bother at this point?
Man I've probably installed a thousand of those ice maker kits on the Samsung fridges. Thanks for pointing out not using a hair gun and hair dryer in this video. I've seen lots of people do that then the whole ice room gets melted and you cant take the ice maker out. Steam cleaner all the way.
wait, isn't water turned to steam at 212F? won't that melt the plastic?? I use a hair drier on my POS Samsung plus keeping the ice bin clear seems to reduce frost build up and ice jamming
I have a Samsung RF268ABBP model that have a broke off freezer sensor that is in the roof of the freezer compartment. I am on a fixed income and can't afford a new one. Is there a way to get to the wires to solder the wires and seal the roof cut? or bye-pass this sensor on the board that would allow me to use the freezer to manually defrost or the defrost mode?.
Great information. I have a Samsung fridge that constantly freezes up, stops making ice & a nightmare to deal with. I’d like to know if there’s an actual fix to this or just a work around that last for a short while.
Good luck I defrosted mine several times and finally bought a whole new ice maker assembly and installed it only for it to freeze up 6 months later. We just live without an ice maker now.
Can I remove the ice maker/water dispenser- ?? I have a whirlpool french door and a drawer I can set temp for veg. And a bottom freezer. We don’t use the water/or the ice maker and it takes up space. Thanks!
Yo Ben, can you help me out.I have an icemaker that drops ice even the ice bucket, not or pulled out. I replaced the icemaker, and it still doing the same thing. It's a zline French door..
I use a hair dryer to defrost my Samsung ice maker all the time. It's never warped anything. I also use a big ol sharp knife to break up the ice, I'm just careful to avoid the refrigerant loop, never any issues doing this. Afterwards I'll get about 2 weeks of ice before it freezes up again. Samsung sent a check for the fridge a while ago since a tech wouldn't come out to repair it in my area. So I just deal with it. I just changed out the case brake/flow sensor on my Samsung dishwasher, at least it works again. I was ready to pull the trigger on a new set of appliances, however I was afraid they wouldn't last as long as these have, 8 years so far. No problems with range or microwave, just case break assembly on dishwasher after 8 years and ice maker freezing up after about 5 years. I won't do Samsung again, but as you already know they are all built to fail nowadays. At least my 8 year old Samsung appliances feel sturdier vs the new stuff I was looking at. The Midea appliances at Lowe's really stood out as the best bang for the buck. Extremely nice looking and seems very well constructed. Midea is the largest appliance parts supplier in the world. Even so I was afraid to pull the trigger ..
I am in the same situation. Samsung agreed to honor the warranty on our 2014 icemaker. The technician was unable to make the repair as the motherboard was too large to fit into the pocket. How much was Samsungs check? I want to repair it myself but finding the correct updated motherboard may be an issue
I have a samsung rf28hfedbsr that has been unplugged for about a year. I just went ahead and plugged it in but I am having some issues with it. It is getting too cold, and the thermostat for both the fridge and the freezer is stuck at 80. When I enter diagnostic mode I get error codes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14, and 15. Do you have any recommendations? Thanks
@@bensappliancesandjunk even side by side with the ice in freezer? I have the lg door in door with craft ice and both work flawlessly (normal ice in freezer door) and craft ice that falls on freezer shelf. Are you against those too?
The internal mechanism seems like it is frozen over, Whirlpool. A hairdryer will unstuck it and it starts turning again, you notice liquid coming out or forming on the front.
HELP; WHAT WOULD cause ice to build up behind the icemaker in a indoor ice maker. 5 yr old GE. We replaced the icemaker. But it still needs to be defrosted every 3-4 days. Thanks. Dan@D&P APPL.

It is easy. Show up to customers house and if icemaker is frozen, have them defrost it overnight and come back next day. I don't have time to stick around 30min to defrost icemaker.

It's likely to be just a couple of screws or possibly hex head screws which would require a socket most likely.

Too hot will damage plastic in your refrigerator
Hair dryer only
Samsung and LG both suck
I had a power outage and the ice melted in the freezer now I can’t get ice out because when the power went back on it frozen flat ice in there 🤔
Love the Samsung custom hat😂
Yep, thats how we defrost ours.
Works great.........

You rock! TY 🙏🏼💚
Mr. Freeman wants his ice NOW
Start with never buying an ice maker in a freezer model. Buy a separate counter top ice maker.
don't tell me what to do
The countertop ones suck. There’s no insulation and the maker doesn’t keep the ice frozen.
Start with not being broke and buy an new ice maker freezer model
We have been keeping ice in a separate chest freezer.
The way this video started, I thought I had clicked on a HowToBasic video.
