** Enable network boot in bios, set the boot order for network to boot first, this is not in the video but may help other models, press ESC when booting up, then F10 to enter bios, go to “System Configuration “ then “Boot Options” then enable “Network Boot” then scroll down to “Network Adapter “ and hit F6 until it is at the top of the list, then hit F10 again to save and exit**
    You made it!
If you are here you searched the internet and found a whole lot of nothing on upgrading this laptop, and most of what you found said that it can't be done, well that is wrong, it can be done! These laptops out-of-the-box are generally not very good, the operating system takes up most of your RAM and hard drive space, and installing even a few apps will max out your hard drive and give poor performance, so we are going to bump up those numbers to give you a fairly decent laptop for about $100 (give or take current prices and tax).
[Please like and subscribe if this video helped you in any way! Maybe I'll be a youtube partner some day lol]
*** IF YOU HAVE A MODEL THAT IS NOT THE 14-CB116 THIS MAY NOT WORK FOR YOU, BUT, PLEASE CHECK THE PINNED COMMENT FOR A POSSIBLE WORKAROUND FOR OTHER MODELS. ***
    Confirmed working models:
    14-CB116
    14-CB103-CA
    14-CB164wm
    14-CB172wm
    14-CF2112nm
    14-DS0004NF
14-CB008NA (ssd useable but not bootable, network boot may be a workaround, share any feedback!)
14-DS0020DS (enable network boot, change boot order to network boot first in bios)
    14-AX005NA (see pinned post)
    14-AX0XX
    14-AX1XX
*If you tried this mod on a model not listed and it worked let me know I'll add it to the list!*
So here are the steps in a nutshell:
    1. Update bios to F.16 Rev A (Super important, won't work without it, newer versions will work too the F16 was what was available at the time of making this video)
    2. Remove old ram and install old ram (You can go up to 16 gb, I just went with 8 on this budget)
    3. Remove WAN/WLAN Card (enable network boot, set network boot first in bios boot order)
    4. Install SSD and M.2 A+E Adapter (You can go bigger than 250gb, once again, budget, see the ** below it’s important!)
    5. Install the Nano Wifi USB Adapter (This is a really cheap adapter, it works decently though)
    6. Re-Install Windows*** (Your other hardware will retain your activation, neat!)
    7. Partition the old eMMc hard drive (Use the extra space for other things!)
Total process should take about 45 minutes to an hour, please make sure to insulate the SSD part of the adapter as shown in the video or it just won't work right, it's very important.
Here is my parts list (outside of the adapter you can go bigger/better with any of these):
    1. 8GB 2400mhz DDR4 SO-DIMM www.amazon.com...
    2a. M.2 (NGFF) nVME SSD to M2 A-Key www.amazon.com...
2b. Sintech version if 2a is not available
    www.amazon.com...
2c. eBay Sintech version if 2b is not available
    www.ebay.com/i...
    3. ADATA Swordfish 250GB SSD NVMe www.amazon.com...
    4. TP-Link Nano AC600 USB Wifi Adapter www.amazon.com...
**MAKE SURE that your adapter and ssd has enough room to not be pressed on by the case, pressure on the adapter/ssd will cause it to not seat correctly and give really low read/write speeds or BSODs, I used 4 washers on the rear screws (superglued to the case not the frame) and put in some plastic spacers with 3M black/red double sided tape under the battery spacers on the frame, I also removed the battery clip points on the case next to the battery spacers like that one nub we cut off. Pictures are as follows:
    ibb.co/xLRT535
    ibb.co/wBVDQQ8
    ibb.co/ZXjW3kG
*** Heres the link to creating a windows installation USB, scroll down to "download tool now" and make sure you have decent size USB (16gb should be fine)
    www.microsoft....
**** If your model matches this videos confirmed working models and or your laptop doesn’t see the nvme adapter, unplug the battery for 15 seconds from the motherboard then hold the power button, then plug the battery back in, this resets the CMOS for hardware listing

I'm following the tutorial, and have got to the point when I'm installing from the usb drive, it goes well up until it performs the first reboot, upon doing that the install just keeps looping from the point where you select the keyboard language and it doesn't get to the point where you can select a region/country :/

@@IvanDPopov thank you, I realised that the machine I have (ax005na) isn't capable of booting from the wwan port despite making adjustments to the bios boot order and upgrading/downgrading the bios. This was painful to watch. Not because of the quality of the video or how the laptop was upgraded, the video and tutorial was incredibly good and I appreciate the easy to follow steps. Just upgraded my HP-14 with a Patriot P310 240 gig SSD. Great video. Thank you. I used Macrium Reflect, after installing the SSD, to clone the 64 gig eMMC. Worked like a charm. No need for Windows disks or install. Cheers. Just realized that you lose bluetooth as well as wifi, as both are on the card that was removed for the hard drive. I don't use bluetooth on this notebook as it is used for travelling, so no big deal for me. So just be aware of what you are losing when you do this. But gaining so much storage space was more important to me.

Worked great on my Stream 14 -CB164wm. Updated BIOS to the latest (either F.21 or 23, can't remember), swapped the 4Gb DDR4 for a 16Gb stick, installed the nvme adapter and a Intel 512Gb nvme drive, TPLink USB wifi adapter, set BIOS to boot from network, reinstalled Win 10 on the nvme (deleted the eMMC partition first) and no issues at all. Much faster with just the memory upgrade (tried it first before I did anything more) and with the nvme drive boots much faster. It'll never be a speed demon but at least it's not snail slow anymore.

This is really kool vid. I have several laptops and one of my first buys was HP Stream and was using an External SSD to run Windows 11 via the USB and was really slow, even with 8GB's Ram as well as awkward having an external SSD dangling from the USB port or stuck on the lid with double sided tape.
Already purchased an external USB WiFi adaptor, now all I gotta get is this gizmo and it''l be sweet.
Thanks so much for this info, as been looking forever for this kinda vid to help sort this out, so thanks once again.

I upgraded with these recommended parts on a AMD A-4 Stream 14DS0020DS. I opted for a 16gb RAM stick, which was recognized easily.
The processor on this model has a heat sink with a long heat pipe that extends over the space behind the battery pack, and fills up the area where the author placed his m.2 drive.
So I had to secure my m.2 drive to the battery pack, it allows enough clearance for the bottom cover and the m.2 sits right beneath the large center vent.
This model has very little tweakability in the BIOS. There is no ability to update BIOS.
I simply enabled the “network boot” option and then rearranged the boot order to have network boot be first in line.
I started with a fresh windows boot USB, and Windows found and I formatted the m.2.
So, the Stream 14 is no longer a useless brick with 32gb eprom. I now have a decent laptop for all the basics that actually has some elbow room. 16GB Ram, 256GB m.2.
Technically it has everything needed to run Win11, including the security boot on the AMD chip, but so far, the A-4 isn’t on the MS list of approved processors. Maybe that will change.
Thanks to the author for this upgrade. I was about to recycle this $200 waste of money. Now it may get a few years of useful service.

Hello Ivan - First thank you for posting this upgrade. It would have been nice to be told by HP that you were wasting your money with these laptops due to it tiny capacity. I did everything save for taking my Streamer out of S mode, which didn't concern me the extra stuff on Windows. My model is ax010ds. I verified every step. I took screen shoots of what appeared on my streamer which matched exactly what came up on your video.
When I loaded Windows From the USB I created from the Microsoft website, it loaded exactly like your video. I deleted the 32G partition and then choose the NMVe to load Windows onto. I choose NEW and it went find. It began the windows process all the way through to completion. But instead of loading the windows it rebooted back to loading Windows 10 again. I removed the USB and restarted the Streamer. What I got now was "Boot Device Not Found - Please install an operating system on your hard disk - [3F0] "
I used F2 and ran diagnostics and the storage device passed. I went to BIOS and enabled Legacy and attempted to load the system again. It came back "no boot device found." I reset BIOS to default and tried again; no dice! I reloaded windows from the USB to see if the NMVe was still showing, it was. I can see the NMVe partitions and 2 - 32g partitions. I'm at a loss what to do.
I am considering unplugging the NMVe and seeing if I can load to the 32g internal drive, to see if the BIOS will recognize it. I don't know if I should delete the 32g and see if the NMVe will work. I had ungraded the BIOS for my system to v61. It was working with no issues with the NMVe installed. There is a new BIOS just issued v62. I've downloaded it to a USB, but not sure if I should load it? If you have a Patrion account, I'm happy to remunerate you for your help to get it functioning.
There is another poster called "Tundra Time - HP Streamer Upgrade" that was able to get his functioning by using RefiNd. I don't quite get how that was accomplished. Perhaps you are aware of his post. He gave you PROPS for how to do the initial install and parts needed. However he wasn't successful loading like you did is my understanding.
I await your reply. I am a subscriber.
Thank you for reading and replying.

I looked at the original pinned comment that list the parts, etc. Is that where I find the steps necessary, or somewhere else in your post?
Maybe I need my hand held more so than others here. Like I wrote to you in my original post everything went well just like your video, until I loaded Windows OS from the USB.
It went fine till the OS loaded but after that it just kept repeating the loading sequence. After pulling out the USB all I get is that no boot drive can be found.
If you can bare with my repeated query and indulge me some more specifics I'd appreciate it.
I have subscribed as you requested, before you requested it.

Got it working on my ax0xx!
A few things: the wifi card also controls Bluetooth, so I had to get a Bluetooth adapter along with the wifi one.
I'm using Linux Mint, and for the life of me couldn't get the wifi adapter to work (1st one in your description). 8 hours later, after trying every driver I could find, I downgraded the kernel one version... And it worked. Lol
Also had a helluva time trying to boot from the nvme. I don't think the bios supports it. But I could see it as a storage device and the Linux Mint installer let me install onto it.
SO what ended up working was installing Linux Mint on the original drive, then in the GRUB menu I can choose to boot from the nvme SSD. I changed the GRUB settings to automatically boot into the new SSD.
And now I have 500gb! Thanks for the video dude!

Clone your internal drive to the new ssd. In the event, as happened to me, the clone software refuses to clone to an external drive, make an image of the eMMC to a USB STICK. Put the new ssd as a SATA DRIVE into a desktop, plug in the USB STICK and the restore the image to the SATA ssd drive. The eMMC may have been compacted so there is a possibility, as happened to me, that your clone software will be needed to convert the image, after which the drive will be properly recognised by BIOS and can be set as boot drive. I have booted from a usb2.0 installed cloned PATA DRIVE which barely had read speeds of 40MB/s but an ssd in appropriate USB 3.0 case showed read speeds about 450MB/s. Using CrystalDisk Mark.
eMMC read sspeefs were about 150MB/s.

    • @IvanDPopov
      @IvanDPopov  7 месяцев назад +1

That’s definitely a way to do it, you will get similar speeds via the internal adapter as well, minus the risk of un mounting your OS by accident. The USB ssd interfaces are a little hit or miss though with how long they perform before burning out, so I would grab an extra just in case.

Continuing my Adventure into improving this laptop
Memory is upgraded to 8GB , Currently all that I can afford. Was looking for 16GB but there don't seem to be too many and all outside of my current budget.
I now have an old but good mechanical 160GB Hitachi Drive installed externally via USB3.0 to SATA case for my boot drive
Updated Windows 10 with the exception of one 2023 update that it seems refuses to download and install. A known problem from Google searches.
I have tested, using CrystalDisk Mark, my USB connection which is quite slow.
I have tested a 512GB mSATA SSD mounted in a SATA 3 enclosure, connected by USB3.0, which is way faster than converting the wifi adapter to take an ssd. This will be my next goal, to replace the 160GB with a 512GB on USB to SATA. I borrowed the 512GB from my Aspire laptop which I upgraded recently.

I checked the specs, it’s using ddr4 2133 ram so that seems to be upgradeable, and it has an m.2 wifi slot like the other one, no bios updates available though so you’d have to try and see if it works without it but it does say the wifi is upgradeable so it’s possible it comes stock without an active FIT and could work, glad to hear you were able to help a student! Best of luck let us know how it goes!

@@IvanDPopov Update: the AMD A4 version will definitely support 16 GB of RAM, but the SSD install is not possible! This particular computer downclocked a 2400 mhz module to 1866, and I forgot to see if I could fix that in the BIOS, but at least we know it can handle 16 GB. As for the SSD, there is a heat pipe coming from the heatsink right where the SSD would go, which means there's just not enough space. Even if there were, you'd be putting an SSD right on top of a heat pipe, which would be bad news. As far as storage goes, it looks like your best bet is to configure a fast SD card as internal storage.

Did it speed up the laptop and make it functional? I bought 2 of these for school kids and they were SO SLOW and basically unusable. They now are in a box in the storage room. But if $100 will make them faster and actually function, I'll do it. Still cheaper than a chromebook. But it they still suck (they have the celeron processor) then I won't waste my time. I would appreciate it if you told me about how much performance improvement you now have. Thank you.

    • @IvanDPopov
      @IvanDPopov  2 года назад +1

It’s quite a bit of a performance boost, on average your stock emmc hard drives (if not full) will run between 150-250mbps read and write speed max, the fuller they get the slower they will run, and ram will bottleneck any heavy applications like photoshop etc. with the upgraded ram you’ll see better application handling and with the ssd hard drives over a pci-1x connection you’ll have 450mbps and above on average read and write speeds, with the added space you’ll keep those speeds too as long as the kids don’t clutter up the ssds.

Based on Ivan’s very informed (and timely) response , I thought I’d go ahead and give this a try .
I primarily use the computer for Zwift and the dropped connections were driving me nuts. Issue might have been just the 4GB RAM but since I was going to open it up and I was down to 4GB usable on the hard drive , I figured there was nothing to lose by trying since the parts are relatively cheap.
The short answer is Ivan’s awesome tutorial worked perfectly for my machine ( I see there was at least one other posting requesting info about the same machine so here you go! ).
      Notes as follows:
      1) My laptop was never in S mode so that was easy once I figured out I didn’t have to do anything!
      2) I could not find an updated BIOS but the M.2 adapter seems to be working just fine with the BIOS noted in my first comment.
      3) The biggest pain was the boot disc. You need at least 8GB free to create the disc , Windows won’t show the USB drive you want to use until the 8GB are free. Took me awhile to figure that out.
      4) The WIFI adapter I used is a bit bulky and makes using the adjacent ports difficult . I’m cycling in the basement so I wanted the best adapter possible, probably would have been okay with the less bulky one.
      5) Broke some of the back case clips using what I thought was Ivan’s method, I would probably be a bit more care and use a spunger along the back by the hinge.
      6) check your case before starting , if it's bulging , you likely need a new battery. I took the case apart three times looking for reasons why the case wouldn’t snap back together in the middle before the light went on. Battery seemed to work fine but was swollen. Add another $50 to the rebuild!
      7) Not sure if there is anything that can be added to the tutorial regarding restoring data from your old drive . I created a backup but I was unsuccessful in getting it reinstalled. I wonder if there is any way you could pull the info from the old disc before you create the scratch disc .
      8) it took some time to reload Windows ( I think I ran a total of 3 updates ) . Keep checking for updates because they don’t all appear right awayIf you can’t find hardware drivers, look under optional updates.I use an ANT++ dongle to connect my trainer and took bit to find that driver.

    Hi there Ivan,
Just wondering if that laptop of yours has 2 slots for RAM, and how much you'd recommend me to get, I have a similar HP Laptop (HP 14s-fq0020na) crucial says that I have 1 slot available and the used slot has a 4GB RAM Samsung M471A5244CB0-CTD fitted onto it, it states that I can install 32GB maximum of RAM, I'd appreciate it if you can help me as I'm not really a techy kind of guy, many thanks, and by the way, the video was amazing 👍

    • @IvanDPopov
      @IvanDPopov  2 года назад +1

So that’s a bit of a loaded question lol, but first of all thank you. Ram limits depend on the cpu ram bus controller, what it can handle per channel, if you have an 8th generation cpu in that model (which is possible for that model) you can potentially put 32gb into a single slot if you only have one slot www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1588330-REG/crucial_ct32g4s266m_32gb_ddr4_2666_mt_s.html/?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwtfqKBhBoEiwAZuesiJHse5oDcE7envDD4uG3yppqez7LZmOFlOHFEKeCh9G6uqhOUJsodxoCRj8QAvD_BwE&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=y
If you have another slot you could potentially put two of those guys in there for 64gb
The best way to figure out your maximum ram available to install on your system based on cpu, OS, motherboard etc is to follow these steps

That’s awesome that the upgrade works for you! As for the wifi adapter, ours worked a little funny at first too but not as you described, ours just dropped connections once and a while, it’s possible you got a bad wifi adapter or some bent pins inside, the device will enumerate as a cd/dvd when installing drivers automatically, so perhaps in device manager uninstall it then try to plug it in a different port (we use the SS usb slot) www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000123568/realtek-usb-3-0-ethernet-adapter-is-enumerated-as-a-cd-rom-device-after-installing-windows-when-using-mdt-or-sccm

I was able to install the SSD on a 14-cb008na, this did not allow me to boot from anything other than the eMMC even with the latest version of bios installed.
I did however install windows 10, but before it started updating I compressed the installation of windows, and turned hibernation mode off, and reduced the virtual memory, this frees up a bit more space on the eMMC, I would also advise to set up your default locations for downloads and so on to the new SSD.
you wull also need to grab the chipset drivers from HP's website, DO NOT use their detect drivers software, its just plain awful and doesn't work half of the time.
just check your windows build and chipset version and download the relevant driver.

Got one of these HP 14 with a duff EMMC 32gig ..at the moment its running on USB 3 flash drive with windows 10 (lol)
frankly its not that slow on a USB ...however ..i fancy doing this mod ..because it will speed it up anyway .
Had the thing appart twice no problem its easy to get inside ...you can also mod it to run on a micro sd card using
the key A/E slot ... that would work too ...because EMMC is not that fast anyway . Then just use a wireless dongle
which are tiny anyways ...for internet connection .

    • @IvanDPopov
      @IvanDPopov  2 года назад +1

A micro SD would work as well indeed, but your R/W speeds will be limited to about 100mbps, that in itself is fine (vs the ssd max speed on a 1xpcie lane of 500ish) if you have more space to run the OS on it, since the 32gb is the bottleneck of the emmc with a full 20gb OS installed, a solid state drive needs at least 75% free space to run at full speed, to note. Cool find though!

Set to legacy boot and secure boot off. Read the readme carefully in the software. I chose Non UEFI DUET with Optional ReFIND option. Others may work thats what I decided to go with. Once I was able to successfully get it working, I made a small 55MB partition called it Z: and cloned the USB to that drive so the USB drive is not required. Im using BIOS F.62 Make certain that or higher is installed Unless you have the other kind of BIOS...if so its V16 is the better. Setting it to Network Book will not work with our setup. You have to set it to the Internal 32MB memory for it all to work. (Yes even when Booting with the USB) You'll see :)

Hi Ivan, I have a Hp Stream 14-ax000na and have followed the tutorial but got stuck in the windows 10 installation loop. I already tried to remove the pen just before rebooting but when I do it says “Boot Device Not Found.
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
    Hard Disk (3F0)”
I also check the Boot order and settings in the BIOS and it is fine. Do you know what possibly could be?

I remember reading somewhere that we can replace the wifi card with a mini M.2 PCI-e NVME (therefore not needing an adaptor). Is this correct and if so could you suggest a compatible model?

If you can find an AE keyed nvme you definitely can
