    I had some absolutely amazing moments in Post Scriptum that no other game can ever give me. I wish others could have enjoyed them too. But without a well organised team games can become incredibly one-sided.

Its British faction is a mess, no Early War content (currently), no actual paratrooper gameplay like on the St Mere Eglise and Crete maps, and personally I don't find the gunplay as fun.

    They made no effort when it came to marketing. I remember there was hype for this game but due to some issues (i forgot what exactly) they lost that momentum and they never recovered it refusing to invest in making this game more visible especially during major updates.

  • @fludblud
    @fludblud 9 месяцев назад +217

    I've never seen a worse take than this, 'realism' was never the issue with Post Scriptum, it was the fact that the game would spend years without any updates or communication from the devs and from its persistent performance issues that kept the game's max server player count below 80 which left large parts of the map empty.
    But most of all, Post Scriptum suffered from market cannibalization from having to compete with another near identical game (Hell Let Loose) that was able to churn out far more content on a regular basis. Same goes for Beyond the Wire and the Verdun games.
    If HLL didnt exist, Post Scriptum would be the default WW2 tactical shooter game even with the idiocy from the devs.

    • @infinitekarma4949
      @infinitekarma4949 9 месяцев назад +18

      My thoughts exactly. Realism is, as he said, Post Scriptum’s greatest strength. And that’s all it was. But the game developers did not have enough communication and didn’t push out enough updates in time.
      The game became dry for most and it only got worse once there wasn’t enough servers that could stay populated. People who did want to play the game either couldn’t get in or couldn’t find a server worth staying in.
      Post Scriptum arguably could’ve done even better than Squad if it had been done right. And although it was going in the right direction, it was too slow and the game died well before it could’ve shined to its full potential.

    • @long_chin_man
      @long_chin_man 9 месяцев назад +11

      yea I was looking for an original comment like this. I physically felt ill listening to this "realism bad" drivel from this video. the constant "hell let loose.... hell let loose... uhh hell let loose you know it does the uhh" sounds like joe biden trying to formulate one single sentence from words hes randomly generated. this guy has clearly just chronically been playing hell let loose, has never had any hours in post scriptum before the dev team got sacked
      the truth? exactly what you said, plus the complete lack of answers over the sacking of the post scriptum dev team, who were handling the game perfectly before their removal.
      *OWI fired its entire post scriptum dev team and executed them by firing squad* .
      Ironically after this, they forced their own CEO into retirement. Added emotes and made a deal with the chinese megacorp "tencent"
      however OWI did not fire the beyond-the-wire team. despite their actions and development decisions being parallel to 343i's decisions with the halo franchise, abandoning simple concepts like vehicles and emplacements. something crucial to the survival of a squad mod and in a time period where vehicles were essential to the victory of a fighting force.
      overall OWI is becoming far less communicative and community-centric and far more mainstream. they are reaching for the stars to become a mainstream AAA title that gets billions of bucks or rubles or pounds or what-have-you. they dont care about the community anymore because their dreams are far higher now. you dont matter to them anymore

      The success of HLL and failure of PS has nothing to do with realism. HLL is alot more realsitic than most average FPS shooters and has a pretty steep learning curve aswell. What sets both titles apart is the presentation. You just need to take a look how great HLL maps are build and how PS maps look like. HLL doesn't just churn out more content but actually high quality content wich immerses the player into the game world.

    • @Pawniac
      @Pawniac 9 месяцев назад +17

      Adding more content without addressing the major core issues is a sure-fire way of making sure your game becomes trash, look at War Thunder for example; Issues that have plagued the game for over 5 years are still there with no fix in sight. Everyone complains about balance and things being half-broken/not working at all since the release of Ground Forces. The problem with Post Scriptum wasn't the armor overhaul, it was BreizhoO, the lead developer.
      I was the Sysop for the player-curated Post Scriptum wiki. The devteam had a meeting to discuss how to handle the wiki and how to update it. Nothing came out of it. I asked for pictures, in-game renders, information to update the wiki, etc., which took them 3 months to send some renders and they were all from Chapter II, very few things from chapter I.
      There was a clear lack of communication. For clarification, I am not blaming the devteam, I am blaming BreizhoO for doing absolutely nothing and running away with the profits instead of sitting down with the community, clearing up the air and making an effort to bring the game back. People like Snazzy and the rest of the community managers/QA and moderators are the people who truly made an effort to connect with the community and help in any way possible. What did BreizhoO do? Fire off the devteam on Christmas Eve with no advance notice and run off with the remaining of the profits.

    • @Pawniac
      @Pawniac 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@firepower01 The armor system was pretty far from fine before the overhaul. Before the overhaul you could kill tanks by repeatedly shooting their tracks, you were only rewarded for shooting ammoracks. With the introduction of the armor update, shells now do post penetration damage, have correct penetration values and no longer can you kill a tank by spamming AP shells through its cupola. APHE shells actually became meta since you could kill crewmembers by shooting center of mass.

    I don't think this game is dead mainly because of its 'high realism', although it can be a part of it.
    -Yes, the gunplay is more realistic than in HLL, but the logistics and gamemodes are simpler. In HLL you have more resources types, more numbers and requirements that you might want to learn to become better. In PS, you leave those things to the small logistics squad.
    -In HLL there are a lot more fast guns (semiautomatic rifles and submachine guns), while PS has a lot more people with slow bolt action rifles. (Yes, this does counts as realism related.)
    -HLL has upgrading and customization mechanics, that maybe keep people more addicted to the game. PS does not, but it's more equal for everyone from the start. You just play for the playing, not to upgrade.
    -In HLL you die all the time and only medics can heal people, but they also die all of the time. In PS anyone can revive people; that's unrealistic but a lot more fun and creates more teamwork.
    -PS servers have a top of only 80 players (40v40), while HLL has a top of 100 players (50v50). That's 20 less capacity of people on every server (and 1 less squad per team).
    -HLL has servers from every country; PS mainly had European and American servers. There's no place for much, let's say as an example, South American players. (This could be considered a consquence of the problem, not a cause, though.)
    -PS has more maps and had more factions, but a lot of the maps are similar, in the same kind of environment.
    -Cities (Carentan) are bigger in HLL, though in PS you can enter in every building, contrary to HLL.
    -HLL has better graphics (textures), but PS has better sound (and light, i believe).
    -HLL has more known/famous maps and scenarios, from movies and other videogames. Omaha Beach (from the most famous war film there is), as well as Utah Beach (which is the only beach in PS)... Stalingrad (Eastern Front); El Alamein (Africa); and practicaly a lot of the maps from Band of Brothers (Sainte-Mère-Église; Sainte-Marie-du-Mont; Carentan; Foy...). While PS touches only some of them and focus only in Europe.
    -PS developer team and updates don't exist anymore, and that is just terrible publicity, from a start ("the game is dead" issue). While HLL, even with its bad trailer gets a lot of publicity and gives context to speak about the game. You know PS is not gonna officialy expand anymore. While HLL is very focused on that.
    And maybe there's another point i'm not remembering now. But i would say this game is dead mainly because of its stop in development; and its bad publicity, or lack of publicity. And because the competitor has avoided this issues: it has made some more commercial choices (the maps, guns and some mechanics); it keeps expanding (more varied factions and scenarios) and gets more publicity. If you have servers from all over the world, and players that speak every languaje, that's capacity for a lot more players and more publicity.

    • @DefensiveLimestone
      @DefensiveLimestone 9 месяцев назад +24

      Yeah watching this video I immediately disaggreed. People act like PS was Arma and HLL is Battlefield so that's why it has more players. In reality, most noticable difference is HLL's unlimited stamina and time/objective based game modes. PS inherited Squad's ticket system and have limited stamina mechanic. Other than that they are not much different in regards of gameplay mechanics.
      So yeah, PS is not dead because it's "more realistic" but because it's dead, as in they failed to gather more players and hold them. Squad is much more realistic and harder but it's healthy populated. Periscope Games really failed to market their game and couldn't keep up with giving a proper live service to it. They were too slow to add content and fix problems, optimize the game etc. So people got bored and left. Game died because developers treat their game as dead. There is absolutely no reason for thousands of people not starting playing right now, it was playable and have enough content. But with the Periscope CEO purging the studio it removed all confidence among players.
      I don't know if OWI can jump in and save the day but unless they do something, it's pretty much dead.

    The issue was the people in charge half-ass the game. Very slow updates, no marketing(Ads). Of course, this game failed. And the sad part is this game could have been the top #1 ww2 game on the market. If only they took the game as seriously as they did like Squad
    The devs worked hard, armor update is 9/10
    It was not realism that killed the game, it was simply the fact that one game had more development compared to the other. ( P.S vs HLL)
    Here is the prove
    If you looked at the Steam charts for P.S. you see that in March 2020 the game had 7000 people this is because of the D-Day update. Which was trash because of very horrendous optimization issues (Not an overstatement) and because of other issues. So the majority of people were refunding the game.
    It is not because P.S is realism is too much, it is because P.S has change not so much since it release date, and devs did not fix major issues
    But the game is still fun to play for some

    Tbh that's what I hate about modern gaming. Everyone says they want something in depth and realistic, yet when it's provided nobody plays it.
    It's why we end up with so many titles that are just cookie cutter, on rails, waypoint everywhere unrewarding and unsatisfying games. I hate having to rely on mods on like 10-20 year old games like Stalker GAMMA modpack or Medieval 2 Total War mods to have a rich in depth experience in gaming, but there we go. All that dev time, studios and big budgets wasted on essentially boring games just hurts my soul.

  • @Voitilus
    @Voitilus 8 месяцев назад +1

    I think there's more to it than just that "realism" thing. Many people wanted even more realism, to the point where Post Scriptum Realism Mod was created and even semi league was established.
    But from my point of view, there were other problems with the game.
    1. Lack of communication from devs. Good to see that devs added something or even made some tests, but before that they were silent for a long time with no info whatsoever, while people asked for a roadmap or anything to know if they get mod support or not. We waited long long time to
    2. Disorganized work schedule. When French campaign chapter was released, it lacked one map and in many places it was broken, later the same was with Utah in next chapter. Before we got it, we had another chapter, some info on new chapter and then chapter 2 was finished. When working on sdk, they've been rescheduling launch many times, reason being the engine, as they've decided to upgrade the engine, more on that later, while still working something on tank update AFAIK. Supposed paid chapters after chapter three were another problem for players, as that meant that they want more for doing next to nothing from playerbases' perspective.
    3. Engine. Game was for a long time unstable and bogged. Wouldn't bat an eye on raytracing or dlss, but I remember that looking at some directions completely cut down your FPS, some people were having problems with objects not rendering, which was a bit of cheating in matches. People wrote and used scripts to remove foliage from game, for "performance purposes", but it mainly made them able to see enemies very far, because everything else was not rendering. When I played clan matches, many times we were interrupted by server breaking up due to ps issues. When we had Carentan map, many players were unable to play as the game was hogging the resources. Supposed update instead of helping, broke more in terms of stability.
    4. Lack of content. When you play Halo, you don't see a problem with playing same maps over and over as matches are fast, quick and change a bit with drops and things like that. In Post Scriptum, non-modded servers use maybe three to four maps, mostly with the same sides. With matches lasting over an hour, it's tiresome to play another hour doing the same thing and only being able to play as rifleman.
    5. This is connecting to the realism side of problem. In many games, you can play as an army of field medics and no problem it is as it would've been possible due to some accident. But here, if you hit a match, you have to take what role is available. If you want smg but not commanding, sorry, only commander can have one. You don''t want to have smg? Sorry, demoted to rifleman you are. Want to be a medic, but slots are taken? Whoops, can only spare few bandages and syringes if game allows. So if you wanted to try out smg roles or something, you had to either make a new team (many times disallowed on servers to solo the team) or just go to training. Want to make a team of anti-tank soldiers? Sorry, unavailable, because in U.S. field manual number 2137 from 1941 you can read that "game developers will not make teams that way", which connects to the lack of content, as you are forced to use that one gun provided and never use another thing. At least you could've used a pistol as a rifleman, but to "balance things", that and for a while even knives were taken out.
    6. Community. Most of the games on free weekends (oh, didn't mention, there were not too many free weekends or other ways of advertising the game) give new players a chance to be equal by balancing everything or swapping something to even the chances, for example giving access to better weapons or giving xp boost to get upgrades faster. Because PS is a different type of game, where you have to know the map in and out and everything about loadouts of every other army, you either try alone at the training field and then go and get yelled for not knowing how to do stuff or hop on the server (one of that 80/80 servers available) to get yelled or even kicked for not knowing what to do. For "more experienced players", free weekends meant free shooting range or trolling moments, because they could've just use their hours of knowledge to obliterate newbies. Of course, sweatness during these matches can only match the intensity of shower in the military base after morning exercise. Many times you can crack a joke or something, but you also can get banned for just saying hi on french or german server or for any other thing that doesn't break anything, like being kicked from team and being spotted as unteamed or being in a closed team you didn't close.
    7. Lack of advertisement. If you want to have a playerbase, you have to promote your game. Hell Let Loose can reveal something, make a simple info drop, people would at least bat an eye. When it comes to PS, you could mostly get once per year free weekend for new addon, and apart from that, no other broad info or advertisement. I have only heard more about the game when I got it on my birthday from brother, only because he heard about it while playing Hell Let Loose and some people told him there's a better game. Apart from that moments and community notes on discord, I have never heard of the game and nearly forgot it existed.

    I was playing on the german side of Arnheim against the Brits. I decided to do Squadleader and so I rally up my men, explained what each role should do and so we picked up a Sd.Kfz 251 and stormed the bridge. One Squad against their whole team. The squad used the Sd.Kfz as cover while we threw smoke and grenades always screaming. "I don't fucking care which role you got, the machine gun will not stop firing." Talking about the MG42 on top of that Sd.Kfz.

Almost nobody used mics, SLs wouldn’t communicate or lead, often the CO wouldn’t lead or use the firepower at their disposal at all and just drive around in the jeep. Being let of a tank crew was awful because you’d just have 2 other people who didn’t know what they were doing or communicate with each other about what the plan was. OWI made Squad, but they also sold the use of the engine to Periscope (Post Scriptum) and Redstone (Beyond the Wire) - while also acting as the publisher to those games as well.

    I think the problem that every high-realism World-War-era large battle shooter suffers from is that it's a niche field that's doomed to obscurity after its initial five minutes of fame.
    Verdun, Tannenberg, Isonzo, Beyond the Wire, Post Scriptum, Day of Infamy: All of these are brilliant, realistic, gritty first person games that at one point or another saw a time when they had considerable numbers of people playing. But if you hopped onto them now, the server lists will only show 2 or 3 active server's worth of people online. The diehard fans of these games continue to play it long after its glory days, but not enough people are interested in a WW1 or WW2 hardcore realism FPS.
    In other words, those who like playing games like Post Scriptum or Isonzo or DoI, have a taste for the exceptionally rare.

      to much realism kills games...
      games are meant to be fun after all and i dont want to feel like punched in the dick for playing a game and enjoying a couple of rounds with the bois.
      every gamer needs some moments of success to release dopamine. thats what keeps customers! works with gambling. :D
      now in HLL you get points, can level up and unlock things. thats motivation to keep going (works in BF since years, even worked in RO2 and RS2) and show others how "badass" and how much of a "pro" you are.
      you can build your own skins and play characters the way you want them to look.
      in PS there is only a victory or a lose and thats it. you cant even see if you killed someone or not. its only about capping points or draining tickets.
      so whats the point to jump in regularly? for the nice looks of the game and fancy effects?

      @@Godlyspameater maybe because there isnt much competition in a modern setting. Only BF or arma3 would be somewhat similar in terms of large maps and huge Battles.
      Btw. BF2042, and we know how much of an epic failure this game is, had about 34k players in the last 24 hours.
      Squad had about 15k. Not even half.
      So a good military simulation still draws less players than one of the worst BF. While CoD, as an arcade game, had about 160k Players in the Last 24h.

  • @Onobody

    Great video I agree with everything said but also wanna mention that the direction the devs were going was a mess with the last "real" (not the snow maps added in) update being the armored update which shouldn't have been a priority and basically killed its funding for the game as it drew in almost no one, and besides that nobody really plays armored as you cant have more than 3 tanks max on a faction unless you want to have a couple of one man tanks or some how to get into an armored game mode server with some other players which is VERY rare.
    The accessibility problem is really what killed the game's hype as well a horrible server admins and rules forcing the player base to only play how "they" want you to play makes experiencing the other parts of the game completely tedious or out right impossible unless you tick every box and or is willing to tolerate the crap. Even the modding scene gets ignored by its own player base and community servers and the only "real" way to play is apparently to join clans making accessibility EVEN harder. Imo not worth it, as much as i dislike HLL and want to like PS

    Sad to see a brilliant WW2 game that actually justifies the authenticity, war ambience, and teamplay, it's the almost perfect WW2 game to be honest. Unfortunately the marketing for the game was weak. And budget/staff for the game was tight that it can't surpass its competition "Hell Let Loose". HLL had the budget, marketing power, and the graphics and the huge block of Chinese consumers.
    Post Scriptum didn't stand the chance, no matter how justified they make their WW2 game. It's just sad.

    I feel like it started to die out after the much antecipated Armor update back in 2021, I feel like they made all vehicles way much OP because AT mines now can't even destroy a jeep, alongside making logi, AT kits and gammon bombs way much more frustrating since they feel totally useless. I remember that before that update I could even find some South American servers almost full of players and there was always about five well populated servers no matter the time of day, nowadays we only got 1 or 2 servers at max only between 1pm to 4pm east US time.
    Now true, PS was never had a community as big as Squad (and I thank God for that), but it was enough to make the game playable no matter when you wold feel like playing it.
