The main reason Brock Berlin's QB ranking was so inflated as a recruit was because he was at the forefront of a revolutionary new offense that went no huddle, deployed 4-5 WRs on every play, and threw the ball 40+ times a game. He played HS football in Louisiana in the late 1990s, where 95% of HS teams still ran the triple option, and passed the ball 15-20 times at most. Berlin's HS coaches attended summer football coaching seminars where college and NFL coordinators would hash out ideas with high school coaches. It was in these annual seminars where his high school coaching staff encountered groundbreaking new offensive ideas by names like Mike Leach and Urban Meyer. Consequentially, this placed Brock's HS team light years ahead of the competition for Louisiana HS football. A lot of scouts and opposing high school coaches were so overmatched at defending this new scheme that they got dazzled by the hype and numbers themselves, and proclaimed Brock Berlin the most uniquely talented QB they'd ever seen for being able to make it run. This explosive new offense was the primary reason Brock went 52-0 as a starting QB in high school. What I'm saying here is that no one ever stopped to consider the possibility that while Brock Berlin did indeed have the measurables scouts look for, they overlooked the possibility that he may also be something of a "system QB" who has inflated stats. That never really entered into anyone's mind back then. The mentality of coaches back then was that no one would attempt running such a sophisticated offense in the first place unless they had a generational blue chip QB prospect who could make it work. The offense itself was just so cutting edge that few could see past the bells and whistles to honestly evaluate Berlin. One of the few who could, though, was his first college head coach, Steve Spurrier. This is why their relationship didn't get off to a great start, and why Brock was compelled to transfer. He just thought Spurrier was being unnecessarily critical of him and was trying to tear him down in order to build him back up into the type of QB he wanted him to be instead. The reality is that Spurrier saw the shortcomings in his game, and didn't protest much when he asked to transfer. I know Florida underwent a coaching change to Ron Zook around this same time when Spurrier decided to give the NFL a try, but the damage was already done. Spurrier wasn't convinced Berlin was his next Danny Wuerffel- who won a Heisman trophy and national championship at Florida in 1996 while also coming from Louisiana. That's really the inside story on Brock Berlin. It wasn't so much that he physically peaked in high school as much as he was never honestly evaluated by talent scouts in the first place. He was running an offense so far ahead of it's time that no one knew where to look for the flaws in his game. They just saw the measurables of height and arm strength, combined with outrageous stats, and assumed that whatever few weaknesses he possessed were, his college coaches would be able to train them out of him to make him better since they'd offer the best coaching he would ever receive. They didn't consider that perhaps his unprecedented HS offense was actually instilling some bad habits that would be difficult for any coach mitigate once he ran up against superior on-field competition against equally talented defenders.
Hey Matt, you said Vince Young did not live up to the hype. You could not be more wrong! He is universally looked at as one of the greatest college football players of all time. You have to remember it was 2003 at the time with Brock Berlin. He played in a shotgun offense in high school. At Miami Larry Coker true shoehorning him into his pro style offense. He would struggle until Miami had to throw the ball in the second half. Today teams change up their offense for quarterbacks or the qb cigars a school that runs an offense that fits them.
The high school I coach at will sometimes have 20 recruiters at any given practice. We almost always have a few 4 star recruits and more than a few other D1 prospects on our team. But 40? At a single practice? That is absolutely crazy.
Sam Huard is the son of Damon Huard, who was a starter at Washington and a backup in the NFL. He was on two Patriots championship teams. Also Damon's brother Brock started at Washington. Sam didn't look great this year, but the offense was terrible all year period. With their new coach Kalen DeBoer being much more offensive-minded, there's hope for Sam to turn things around.
Nobody can be like Tebow was coming out of HS. I just moved to Jacksonville, and my freshman year was his Sr. His High school was on the outside of the city so I figured they were one of the schools in the area (in which there were several) that had money and their campus, stadium and facilities looked like a college’s, but their actual team wasn’t that good…I was quickly informed, “they got Tebow” so during a jamboree I saw Tebow take a qb draw up the middle, breaking a tackle from every single member of the defense. It looked dumb. Like it was a video game and their tackle rating was 25 and his break tackle rating was 99. I’m a Georgia fan, so knowing he was going to Florida, i knew he was going to be a problem.

Stafford is a hell of a lot better than you gave him credit for. He's the fastest quarterback ever to reach 40,000 yards passing. Actually correct that he was the fastest ever to reach 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, and 45,000 yards passing. He threw for over 5,000 yards one season. He made a pro bowl, took the lions to the playoffs several times and was named to the Lions All Time Team. I'm willing to bet that he will also make the Pro Football Hall of Fame after it's all said and done. Oh yeah I almost forgot he had the highest single season completion percentage of 67.2%. Hes a lot better than just alright.
Yea a lot people have no clue about that level. Most of the high level FCS teams are packed with guys who washed out from the P5's for whatever reason but still have the talent
We loved Sims at WSSU we had a great guy at qb already so we had a weird 2 headed monster going but it worked for us. He helped us make it to the D-2 national championship. Good times
Vince young won that championship game against USC damn near single handedly. He had 200 yards rushing and 267 yards passing with 3 rushing touchdowns. The entire team had only a little over 500 yards total.
As a notre dame fan...YES!!! Clausen was way to cocky!!! He showed up on campus in a limo, held a press conference saying he was going to win multiple national championships!!!
It’s all about when a person hits maturity. It’s why some kids peak in pop warner, some in HS, some in college… it’s the ones that shine young but havnt fully matured until later in life that typically have NfL success
Matt, (big Clausen fan and one of my profs back in the day is a Domer so he was on the Clausen train). 100% right about him playing at Oaks Christian he was on a stacked team and yes he got the “Lebron of college football” hype. Where the “cockiness” came from Charlie Weis tried to treat him the same way he did Brady Quinn, not realizing that Quinn was a legit starting QB in attitude and preparation. Clausen was a little more flash. Clausen’s first big announcement at ND was him showing up in a limo with his HS rings acting like he was just coming to take over. Also in 07 he got busted for driving someone who was drunk and transporting booze (kid’s stuff, no mention if he had drank so not a dui). He also had an incident where he got punched in south bend while out with his family. I don’t know how annoying he was, but if you’re the staring QB at Notre Dame and still get punched in the face, you probably made a bad decision.
I played against this guy all four years in HS. That 2006-2007 OCHS team was stacked with at least 11 D1 starting players. Clausen had a terrible attitude while on the field and gave no respect to anyone off the field. That team was notorious for running up the score on any teams they played too. Zero sportsmanship.
Matt I definitely appreciate your videos overall. I’m not sure if this was a mistake but when speaking on Rhett Bomar you said “No division I team wanted him and no division II team wanted him. So he had to take the last resort and sign with an FCS program”. FCS is formally Division 1-AA so Bomar signing with an FCS program would only mean that the 1-A (FBS) programs didn’t offer him but he didn’t even have to entertain Division II schools.
Matt is like a lot of these young new college youtube channels that don't really know what they are talking about and can rarely form their own opinion because it is all surface level.

Watching this older video, great stuff as always. I'm in my mid 40s and have worked as a Software Engineer for my whole career at various tech companies. Engineers get paid well, but the sales people put us to shame. Especially in anything medical or tech. That said these guys who are "normal" and in sales jobs are still probably raking it in. Especially if they have been at the same company for awhile, it means they are meeting their numbers and probably bringing home 500K-2M.
Vince Young's Texas v USC game is one of the few college games I've ever watched, including my alma mater (in the President's Athletic Conference... not exactly AAA lol). I don't even like Texas, but I became a Vince fan and was really sad at how his career turned out. But that bowl game was unforgettable. And as a Jets' fan since Heidi, thanks for reminding me about Sanchez (sigh). Ole Miss not known for great QBs?? Uh, Archie Manning? Eli Manning? (OK, same family but still...) Excellent video, thank you. Got some laughs and brought back some memories.
To be a high school star QB you need size, and maybe a good arm. To make it in the NFL, you also need a good brain. This is where it usually falls apart for these guys.
Dude…. I know I’m 2 years late, but I hope over the last 2 years you’ve learned a little bit about football. In this video it is evident that you have never watched a single football game in your entire life, nor did you attended a single one of your English classes in high school. I hope that in the last 2 years you have since learned both the English language, and football.
How you not show Vince rushing stats can’t just look at stats. Win loss record is important too and in Texas he did with adversity man he was a backup and had to work his way up and had pressure to win a championship.
Matt, thank you for this video!! I love watching/learning about old sports icons. I’d love to see a video about top college basketball recruits! (If that’s already out I apologize I haven’t looked, this was just recommended lol)
Yo Matt I hear you dude but be careful when you say some people haven’t had to deal with any adversity. VY was raised in a rough part of Houston if you are from Houston you know that Houston Madison HS aint no cake walk you have to deal with adversity every time you step outside. If you want to say living up to the hype of playing football ok but what your word some of these dude made it further than they could have ever imagine.
Great video!!! Wanna hear something weird, AND funny ? Jeff Driskel, Kyle Allen, and Davis Mills all currently play for the Houston Texans- yes, the 1-12-1 Last place in the NFL 1st round draft pick getting Houston Texans... Lol. I wonder if the person doing Houston's Hiring watched this video ? 😂
Julian Edelman, Antoine randall-el like Terrell Pryor were also college qb's that made the transition to wr. It will happen again. Also, another buckeye standout, Braxton Miller made the flip.
The next gen QBs taking over the nfl is freaking awesome, they are all so damn good. Mahomes, Lamar, tua , fields, Allen , Prescott, jalen, Trevor , soon we will have Bryce young in the league it’s just so good to be a nfl fan.
I find it so interesting that people make videos like this and speak in such a condescending manner. These guys are still elite athletes and have accomplished more then most people can even dream of
You notice that the more prominent football channels dont talk condescendingly about athletes. Usually because they're ex-athletes themselves and know what it takes and how good these guys are despite some of them not panning out
I remember Brock Berlin. Fans always keep up with the players their age. He was okay at Miami. Being a Tennessee fan, the Clausen brothers always kept my attention. Jimmy Clausen was one of the most hyped HS QBs I remember. Still can’t believe someone drafted him in the second round. Then played him most of the year. Carolina did get Cam out of all that, so it wasn’t a total disaster for them.
Vince young is a prime example for why great HC’s started building around QB’s abilities and not forcing QB’s to do what they want to do
Head coaches have been building around QB'S since long before you were born.

I like how Vince went from 6'5" 225 in football to 6'7" in basketball 🤣 come on Matt lmao
Ha, that had me scratching my head too lol
Those orthopedic insoles man
He’s just going off of whatever site he looked at and bball tends to inflate height
He grew in basketball
That's his basketball height since they're usually taller than football players.🤣
Hey Matt, you said Vince Young did not live up to the hype. You could not be more wrong! He is universally looked at as one of the greatest college football players of all time. His pro career was sabotaged by Jeff Fisher. His talent was transcendent. As a college football player he exceeded the hype.
also complete bullshit to assert he never faced adversity literally had a winning record in the nfl despite having a coach that tried to sabotage him
@@brenamal Exactly. It also doesn't help that he was on terrible titans teams.
@@yonder8287 i think this is just a case of terrible speculation because this guy sounds like a southern white guy and they love to buy into the idea of black athletes being spoiled or something. which is ironic because maybe if the op had been through some adversity in a setting different from his own he could be more empathetic

It was always interesting to me how Brock Berlin played in three conferences. SEC, Big East and ACC.
Had some great games at Miami haha and some terrible ones
I remember him saying in high school
Berlin stood 12 yds behind the center in high school and that added to his success. Didn't have to deal with a rush

Vince young didn't live up to the hype??? He was a star at every level!
@Jonathan Fitzgerald scrub compared to what did he not have a good rookie year I know I saw him in the playoffs with Tennessee atkeast once or twice start and get a team 6 wins in the nfl you ain’t no scrub! A scrub would be a guy that throws like 5 ints in his first start and never plays again! I think sone people don’t understand the level of competition in the nfl! If you have any success whatsoever if you get there there’s no way one of nobody’s on a computer are calling them scrubs! And I’m an ou fan any true ou fan knows the talent Vince young had! He was a rare athlete that comes around once every 10 years or so!
Dude was rookie of the year in the nfl! Anyone calling him a scrub don’t know a f$ck!n thing about football! Cooper rush may end his career with one start that game alone took him out of scrubdom! 300yds and a game winning td against the elite of elite is sufficient
I don't think you understand what a scrub is! You can't be rookie of the year and be a scrub maybe didn't live up to the hype but no where near a scrub! Go watch the Texas USC game he put that team on his back
@@gavster_killa4591 You can absolutely be rookie of the year if all other rookies do worse than you. VY was definitely a scrub, and that's because a) he didn't put in the work and b) Jeff Fisher
You can have 1 "good" year and still be a scrub. Happens all the time.
Loved the video, love learning so much info on all of these players. Had to give you a hard time about the "Oklahoma Raiders", the "Las Vegas Rams" 😂
“Yea I’m not crazy it is just not St. Louis it’s Las Vegas” that got me dying at 41:35. Great video man, and it is cool to see Matt have some success after being shut down by the packers during most of his career. Hope to see him and the Las Angeles Rams in the NFC championship with the packers.

“Jeff Fisher happened to Vince Young.” - end of story
This
‼️‼️
Vince Young happened to Vince Young.
Vince won a national championship. Only other thing better is winning a superbowl or getting to the hall. He made the league but can we all remember Ryan Leaf. He got lazy in the pros but he was definitely great in college. Mind you Dan Marino (my man from the burgh) Never won a Superbowl or a National championship. This analysis is college, not pro.
5000$ a week at cheesecake factory is what happened to VY! 🤦🏿♂️
Vince Young's career turns out completely different in a different situation. Jeff Fisher never wanted him and treated him like it. All young QB's need coaches to pat em on the back and help push them through the development phase. Can't name one good QB who didn't have that level of support early
Tua is a great example of this
you can name a thousand that don't have that level of support, but you see them as bad qbs because....they don't have the support
@@launchbase4944 exactlllyyy

You ever notice Matt says pacific instead of specific, it’s so funny and makes me lol.
Vince lived up to the hype....what are you talking about. Heisman trophy, national championship. NFL rookie of the year....set for life. Just because someone doesn't become a HOFer doesn't mean they failed. He is a college HOFer
Vince burned through his money.
@@graythaprince what does that have to do with what he did on the field? #1 recruit wins a national championship and a Heisman? Mission accomplished. Rookie of the year? Winning record as a NFL qb? He lived up to his recruitment level point blank no matter how his career ended.

@@graythaprince He still gets the NFL Pension - thats240k a year. He's fine
Been watching since the start keep up the good work Matt
The high school I coach at will sometimes have 20 recruiters at any given practice.
We almost always have a few 4 star recruits and more than a few other D1 prospects on our team. But 40? At a single practice? That is absolutely crazy.
You must coach at a powerhouse
Keep doing the long vids please!
I’m so happy to see this
Much respect for the long video man
Please do one on other positions this was amazing great work!
Love the long videos and the content. Stay crushing it homie
Vince Young was the real deal!
I’m a Georgia fan, so knowing he was going to Florida, i knew he was going to be a problem.
so happy tearbow failed in the nfl, makes me feel better for him kicking out ass for a few years (fsu fan)
Great video Matt. Looking forward to a What happened to every #1 NFL draft prospect video.
I can't believe you said taking a team to 11-2 on the SEC in 2013 was just okay. Wasn't sure I heard that right the first time.
Touché
Really enjoyed this one Matt. It was a GREAT VIDEO !!! I'd love to see you do one on the all time most successful Quarterbacks to go from college to NFL
@Steve Hampton That would be a video on successful NFL quarterbacks...you already know those names...they all came from college 🤪
This was Dope Matt, appreciate the history lesson! Would it be bad to ask for a video like this on all the Heisman winners starting in 2000??? 😁😁😁😁
YES
Y’all do have to take into account the early 2000s will feature a lot more recuirting busts QBs didn’t have as much support then as they do now
11:43 Joe Mauer is just an insane athlete. 73 TD thrown in 2 years as a QB, averaged 20 points per game as a SG in basketball, batted .600 and was one of the top baseball recruits in the nation. Dude probably could have picked any sport and been a stud.
#1 overall pick for the Twins in '02 I believe. Amazing
I went to a men’s conference and Brodie Croyle was speaking he’s a good guy and a good Christian guy he also shared a story about how in 2013-2015 after he retired his wife was at a gas station she didn’t even have a “honk if you sacked Brodie” bumper sticker that they was selling when he was at Alabama a guy honked his horn at her I thought the story was funny as a Auburn fan
I would like to see a series like this. Not for each position, but all the main ones. Rb, reciever, de, ect.
That championship game Texas Vs USC was historic! I watched it live and was pumped and couldn't wait for it and it lived and surpassed all expectations! That was one of the best football games I ever seen and Vince Young outplayed not one but two Heisman winners Leinart and Bush and it's not like USC played bad they all killed it including Lendale White he played lights out too! Man that game was awesome and VY was just sick in that game and really that whole season!
I started that game routing for USC, ended it a Texas\ Vince Young fan
That 2005 National Championship game was the best game I'd ever seen, at least, up to that point. I was a USC fan... who became a Texas fan... but I was still a USC fan. A true win for both teams and all fans
Don't hate him for it, when you play for the lions that's just how people look at you. Stafford deserved better then Detroit.
Stratford's definitely Hall of famer definitely Hall of famer
Thank you for covering Brock Berlin. He know he was inconsistent but I really liked him! 🙌🏻
Rhett Bomar did well at Sam Houston State, and they always play tough competition in FCS (D1-AA) level.
NCAA did Rhett so wrong
I was just going to comment this...he said D-II didn't want him so he went FCS. Ummm...FCS is a step up from D-II and is considered Division I.
This is the one..that was an awesome game
As a notre dame fan...YES!!! Clausen was way to cocky!!! He showed up on campus in a limo, held a press conference saying he was going to win multiple national championships!!!
Can you explain how Vince Young didn’t live up to the hype?
I am an USC fan and admire what a game Vince young had.
Excellent video Matt. I bet it took a lotta work to do this. Very impressive 💯💯💯
Brodie Croyle played in the smallest classification in Alabama. He had no business being the number 1 QB out of high school.
I watch a lot of football related videos yours is on my top 3 cause of all the info you provide
Also if he didn’t want to sit a year, moving to FCS was the best move… and a div II school would have loved to have him…
@@8MoneyIzmyMission8 this was the exact moment I turned the video off. I appreciate that the research was done for....stats, but obviously this guys knowledge of college football is actually extremely weak.

Jimmy Clausen was real humble as an 8th grader I met him outside the locker room at neyland during spring game

Roll Tide! Great video! Would definitely like to see the same with RB's, recievers, etc

Don't typically watch sports content anymore but this was solid. Thank you for taking the time to do it.
GREAT walk down memory lane, man. Well earned sub
Jimmy’s biggest knock wasn’t ego it was hand size. He had the smallest hands for a QB coming out that year
To be a high school star QB you need size, and maybe a good arm. To make it in the NFL, you also need a good brain. This is where it usually falls apart for these guys.
No, to make it in the NFL you need a good offensive line and good coaching staff more than you need a "good brain."
You should’ve split these into multiple videos bro lol
Yes this video had to take a good amount of time to make and you nailed it great video keep up the great work

That’s true. 💯
Probably because hoopers don't have to wait 3 years to make the NBA.Alot can happen within a few years especially in football.
How you not show Vince rushing stats can’t just look at stats. Win loss record is important too and in Texas he did with adversity man he was a backup and had to work his way up and had pressure to win a championship.
He was a beast as a runner
He doesn't mention one word about his rushing ..

I find it so interesting that people make videos like this and speak in such a condescending manner. These guys are still elite athletes and have accomplished more then most people can even dream of
You notice that the more prominent football channels dont talk condescendingly about athletes. Usually because they're ex-athletes themselves and know what it takes and how good these guys are despite some of them not panning out
If nil would of been legal back in Bomars years who would of known how it would of turned out.
