In this #metalmonday episode of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from American Nu Metal band Korn for the first time. I found their sound to be reminiscent of bands that I've heard previously like Slipknot and System of a Down. I was kept constantly 'on guard' a bit by the dissonances and overall sound design. In the end, I think this is a highly effective song. I hope you enjoy!

The energy that goes through the crowd live at that moment is breath taking
@@mw6346 Seen them 3 times and being in that crowd was nothing i ever felt before. The power and surges of the crowd was a rush ill never forget. No cell phones. Everyone in tune with the music and band. Just jacked Korn fans to see our favorite band. I remember on one show the build up on Here to Stay was so intense. i could hear dudes yelling "get ready boys!!!" to each other with huge smiles just ready to go berzerk on the breakdown. So epic
What really makes me lose it is a little later immediately when the scat ends and guitar goes into that heavy riff. It's like you were flying all over the place like a crazy person and you suddenly get slammed right down to Earth.

I can agree I've seen them live 3 times and they've played it all 3 times and me and everyone else absolutely loses it I felt like I had a concussion from the headbangs 😂
Korn sounded so different than any other band in the mid 90's. That's what drew them to me.

Spot on, that's why he has a PhD 🙂 But vice versa this should also teach all of us musicians how to make not good but great songs with a purpose. Songs that reflect the message in every part of the song and lyrics. His analysis has been eye-opening in terms of how good some arrangements are - much better than the pure superficial impression of catchy music. Plenty of examples in his playlist, obvious and less obvious ones.

Nu metal is not everyone's cup of tea, but Korn, for me, has a certain appeal. I have been a fan from their first album. Each Korn album stands on its own merit. Follow the Leader is a great album.
everything after issus was shit though. I was so disappointed of untouchables…maybe just my personal opinion. but it was the band I loved as a teenager and It really hurted me disliking :D

@@Hecto_Pascal I never got into Issues overall, I really wanted to like it but it just didn't do anything for me. I still love ST and FTL.
Untouchables was the last great album for me. Take a Look in the Mirror sounded like they were trying to copy bands that were copying them. There were a few good songs here and there after that.
Love Korn. Their groove is everything.

The real ones remember 12 tracks of silence to start this album.. this is track 14. I will always love that Nu-Metal era.. reclaim my place is one of the best songs on that album.

You got the description of Nu Metal pretty spot on, but one thing that often doesn't get brought up is the fact that it was one of the first Metal genres that completely abandoned the Blues. You'll notice in many songs that there is very little Blues pentatonic riffs and melodies, as opposed to previous Rock and Metal that had a lot of Blues influence.
I think that thrash and early black metal bands in early 80's did that first.

Death Metal often used Blues in their guitar solos but yes, a good example of the push away from the Blues. Black Metal too, not really any Blues in there.@@Xerxes1337
Interesting that Doug noticed the lack of a guitar solo. Korn’s two guitarists have deliberately stayed away from solos and have crafted a symbiotic sound - much of what Doug called a “soundscape” - that is greater than the sum of its parts. There are videos of the two of them working together, face to face, in the studio, that I find fascinating.

Korns most interesting music was on their first eponymous album. Maybe a little bit on the second. The rest is more popular. Untouchables is a powerful thing, indeed.
Agreed. I listened to the first 2 like alot (ALOT) and was very hyped for follow the leader, and it was good, but it didnt stick as much as the others, and then all the nu metal bands turned me of the genre, but still love those 2 albums.

I grew up with their Greatest Hits Vol. 1. My mom would ask me to skip some songs but I wouldn’t. Twisted Transistor is great too.

I grew up with follow the leader,..as i started to listen to them i was 12-13,. Saw video of falling away from me and freak oal..after this i felt in love,..
Great Track by Korn and Jonathan Davis is such a passionate and versatile singer. This track is an example of Davis' vocal variety and magnificence. Jonathan Davis is highly influenced by Mike Pattons (Faith No More, e.p. 'Epic', 'Midlife Crisis') vocal style.
The sequel to 'Freak On A Leash' is the song 'Falling Away From Me'. Also, highly recommended.
I was 16 when this album came out, so Korn was a feature in high school music discussions and parties.
I love this song, and “Got the Life” from the same album, but I’ve always felt they are a little “hit and miss” with their songs.
There’s a greatest hits album that’s well worth checking out, but whatever you check out next, the song “Blind” is an absolute must.
You gotta check out "Shoots and Ladders" next time you get to Korn! It's one of my overall favorite songs to see live! It's almost certainly the only time you'll see the bagpipes played at a rock show!

First time viewer. I tuned in to see a professional critique on Korn, as I really like their sound. I’ve seen a few people review Korn and I’m happy to see what a positive reaction they get. It’s also cool for someone like yourself to break down what they are doing in terms of notes and progression and distortion etc. It’s fun to learn new things about a song you’ve liked for years. ❤
Listened to this song since I was 3 years old (thanks dad!), Korn was the band that got me through the toughest times and have given me some of my best memories. Seen them 10+ times with my dad over the years. Big fan and happy to did this!
Ok, if you are tipping your toes into this genre, you have to do some Deftones. If you do "Passenger," Maynard is a guest vocalist. I really like Rosemary, Sex Tape, Knife Party, or Digital Bath.
I like song "Make me bad" . the first albums are very chaotic . The guitars usually have no sense - their chords are very chaotic though powerful. Songs are more about drum and clicky-bass groove . The vocalist still till this day is very recognisable by his creepy style of singing that some people enjoy very much and also many hate . They will be rocking these songs in their 60s , because their music is not very complicated and hard to play (like Metallica or Iron Maiden).

Took a comic book coloring college class with the illustrator of that album cover as my teacher- He also did Spawn comics. Was a good time, blew my mind when i found out he did the Korn album cover.

How does one attend college in 1998 and not hear Freak on a Leash at least once a day?
The scatting that Jon Davis is doing first started as him using it to convey what the thoughts of a strung out Methhead sounded like and how you'd hear them talk to themselves. JD himself had a hard battle with his Meth addiction. He's used it a bit on their Self-Titled album but it wasn't until their second album with the opening song, Twist, to where it became a mainstay. FYI: The only actual words in "Twist" is twist and it's only the chorus. The rest of the song, which is only 50 seconds in total, is just him scatting. The "secret" track on the second album is just the isolated Twist vocals.
If you were a mortician, you probably would end up like that too. Especially when his parents did it in their own home and bodies would back up into their kitchen. There was literally "Dead Bodies Everywhere" 😉

Korn and other bands of this subgenre are really not my thing at this point, but when I was a freshman in high school this stuff was just starting to gain traction but wasn't yet massively popular in the mainstream. It was crazy to see a band like Korn blow up on MTV when they released this album and single, considering how heavy they were for the time and their lyrical subject matter. I got into them when their first album came out a few years earlier and I was blown away by how different they sounded from everything else.

Saw Korn with Breaking Benjamin at the beginning of Covid in Minneapolis, weird seeing all the masks in the crowd, but none-the-less, awesome show!!

Korn for me is the most unique nu / alternative band. I was never a fan of nu metal, but Korn impresses me a lot, whether it is a classic or a new release. I would recommend Make Me Bad. Issues really works for me as an album with unique and very compelling atmosphere. And Make Me Bad is a go-to track from Issues, I suppose.

This song is in D standard with drop note 5 string bass guitars 7 string same tuning.
Nu-Metal - the Nu started in the recording studio meaning the Nuance of sounds which are used, means anything goes except guitar solos. They use effects instead and the technique of recording is founded by the Godfather of NuMetal Ross Robinson.

To add to the comment and feel what Jonathan Davis was saying about the record industry, give a listen to “Ya’ll want a single?” It was what I feel was his answer was to the label wanting a single that could be capitalized on, however. his answer was that song.

Make me bad and Throw me away are two of my favorites from KoRn. Also the nonsensical noises is something called Scatting that JD is well known for.

A band i feel most rockish people dont know about but ronnie james dio delivers great vocals in his younger ages. Hope youd give it a kick
Check out the more emotional epics like Daddy, Kill You and My Gift to You, from the first 3 first LPs. Daddy for example is some really heavy stuff.
I never listened to much Korn, given that I never enjoyed their music, but this really makes me go back to Matrix coming to movie theaters. Definitely that atmosphere.
I don't know where the idea came from, perhaps the album covers behind you, but I'll be hoping you listen to some Daft Punk one day. Like Discovery album, I think it's their most appreciated. And song like Aerodynamic. It also has the classic Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger. The album in general has quite interesting surroundings.

Was wondering what you are your thoughts on this type of music. This is on my desert island playlist a band you may have heard of from the 80's. It was a reformation of a band that had its origins as 'The Jam", and English quasi-Punk band that suddenly went Cool Jazz/R&B and Rock at the same time, then called themselves 'The Style Council'. The song is called 'Me ship Came In' from the album "Café Bleu". (I think you're a Jazz fan right?)

I would love you to analyse some of Unleash the Archers, particularly "The Wind that Shapes de Land". Or any of the songs in Abyss or Apex, to be honest, but that one is my particular favourite.
The lack of guitar solo was a 90s thing. Bands like Nirvana, Green Day, and Korn rose from a kind of retaliation against the glam metal of the late 80s and early 90s, and the guitar solo was one of the casualties. I actually had friends who would change a song if they heard a guitar solo. It really sucked growing up in that era of music knowing some of these musicians had to feel restrained from displaying their talents.
Guitar solos were in all kinds of Rock music in the 70's and 80's, though. Not just hair metal.

What’s up, it’s ya boy, the Fable of the Silent Son guy. I’m here to once again recommend Alter Bridges latest epic: I would like to recommend Alter Bridge’s latest epic Fable Of The Silent Son. It’s a masterpiece. From the way I understand it, the Silent Son is Myles Kennedy and the “Fable” is his battles with depression and his own inner demons that were so prevalent in his work (especially on their darkest album ABIII) and life. The song is a beautiful call to arms to fight for your own happiness and continue living with the aid of those who have walked your path before. It’s the “you’re not alone” speech without the preachyness and a dual guitar solo

btw... Saw Korn, Deftones, Pixies and The Cure last year. Korn´s short concert in Stockholm was great. The Cure full concert was the best and, amazingly enough, Deftones wasn´t too good... which was sad as it´s both mine and my son´s favorite NuMetal band. But Limp Bizkit was great at lyrics. Take A Look Around and Nookie are both songs I bet you´ll enjoy.

awhile back i went to a triple bill with life of agony and ozzy i didnt always show up for opening bands usually in parking lot but with that show i really wanted to see life of agony as we approached the venue we heard a band just killing it turned out to be korn opening up absolutely destroyed life of agony ozzy of course held his own
