The longer version is the true classic.
Thanks for Watching!
Absolutely! Great 7 minutes!
The original 6 minute version is really where it's at. I adore this song to pieces. It builds into incredibleness.
Thanks for watching R N!
Valerie Simpson who wrote it with the late Nick ashford said Diana Ross was not sure she can do the song. Valerie told her to sing and she sung. This was her first solo number one and her 13th career number one
Great story, thanks Patrick!
it must be discussed about Diana Ross herself. So many opinions have been discussed about Diana Ross as a vocalist. What I need to add is what Diana Ross creates as a total performer. She made her image extremely significant in her development of her image. Diana was visually one of the greatest singers that came out of Motown. When she became a solo artist in 1970, Her image was elevated to that of a world class performer.
This rendition of "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" built itself up from her emotional depth drawing the listener in to her. The end of the song takes time and what an ending. What I always love about Diana Ross songs is her ability to make you actually see her in your mind performing. Visually there are few other singers that have her presence.
Fantastic points and insight. Really appreciate you sharing!
Diana Ross is the best! What a great song! She just soared when she let loose at the end! What a voice!!
Agreed! Thanks Holly!
Great to hear a fresh perspective. Growing up I heard many folks say this was their theme song in the 70's. Legend.
Thanks Tom it was a fun one to discover, a true classic!
The long version was awesome ! Ross can do no wrong ! Ashford & Simpson wrote this masterpiece ! And they did Ross RIGHT on many Motown joints !
Thanks!!
Love Both Versions, but if I have to pick 1, It's DIANA ROSS ALWAYS"
Thanks Angel!
Epic! Both versions are equally awesome. Glad you picked up on the bass Trey, for me James Jamerson is THE greatest bass player ever. Such a shame he doesnt get the recognition he deserves.
Thanks Neil, it is crazy I hadn’t heard his name come up that much because his work here is extraordinary!
Hi! Great, timeless selection from Diana! The Marvin and Tami version went top 20.
Diana wasn’t that keen on recording her 1970 version because she had recently recorded Ain’t no Mountain on the “Diana Ross and the Supremes Join the Temptations” 1968 album. That album flew to number two and went gold.
I remember when Diana’s 1st solo LP was released in 1970, radio DJs kept playing the LP version of Mountain. Finally, Motown edited the song and it was number one for 3 weeks. The 1st solo album itself was a smash and went gold just like Reach Out and Touch did.
One of the best performances of Mountain is from Diana’s 1980 HBO special which you can find on RUclips. It’s the opening of the concert and it goes from Diana on film and segues to Diana live in an amazing concert opening. That special earned Diana a Cable Ace Award. At the end of the concert she reprises Mountain and we see Diana go from being live on stage back being on film all while still singing live. Truly incredible. Check it out.
We need to get HBO to to put those specials on HBOMAX. It would be so awesome
We will check that out. Thanks for all the insight and for watching, it is truly appreciated!
RN
Yes! I searched HBO Max for the 1980 award winning special but it’s not there. It was executive produced by Diana so maybe HBO needs to cut a deal with her to air it.
In the 80s the concert was available on Beta and VHS. I have those and I have the concert on laser disc and it’s quality is superb. I’ve transferred it to dvd. There is no official dvd release of this show. That’s unfortunate because so many people are being deprived of seeing and hearing Diana during one of the many peaks in her career.
Fun fact: I saw the show live 5 times. 4 times in Las Vegas and once on the tour’s opening night in Providence, Rhode Island.
@@RP-oe3uq that's incredible! I just dont understand why most of her greatest shows are not more available and perfectly packaged. I'm just not sure what that's about.-- all got was the live in central park..which is fine..but theres actually better moments of her vocally. -- you said you went to the vegas show a few times, were you able to see her in the high heel shoe? Lol.....and I'm straying here.. but I wish they released "You Were The One" as a single..it would've been a hit. What a shame... I'm not sure where Berry Gordys focus was at around this time.
Hi Trey!
Yes, please try to check it out. The opening overture is fab with stills of Diana projected onto a screen that occupies the height and width of the stage while Mountain is playing. It’s all in black and white. Then there’s a white flash of light and Diana’s face in glorious color covers the screen as she recites the opening spoken words of the song. That leads to Diana descending a staircase from heaven on film. When the filmed Diana reaches the bottom of the staircase the live Diana bursts out of the screen in perfect synchronization with the song and the Diana filmed image. Nothing had ever been done like that before; it was a first.
You and your viewers will get a kick out of it.
Try : Diana Ross - Surrender. Awesome Ashford & Simpson production ! Her first album was packed with "HITS !" Ross had an AWESOME solo career. The Supremes jump started her solo career. But she will always be a Supreme to me !
Thanks Isaiah!!
During Diana's tenure with The Supremes, they covered this song as well -- as a duet with The Temptatons -- which wasn't as successful as Marvin Gaye's & Tammi Terrell's orginal recording. The song's writers, Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, were assigned to write/produce Diana's solo album by Motown founder, Berry Gordy. They wanted to take this song in a more "epic" creative direction. The lyrics were slightly re-worded, with an extra verse being added. It was decided that Ross would speak/narrate the verses instead of singing them.
This new arrangement pushed the song past the standard 3 minute mark, with the album version clocking in at 6:19. Berry Gordy felt the song's length would harm it's chances of getting air time on raido stations, so he had an edited down 3:32 version sent out to radio stations as a promo 45rpm single. Ironically, most DJs preferred the full album version and the radio edit was rarely played.
Such awesome info! Super appreciate you taking the time to share!
1 Of the greatest voices of all time💯 🔥🔥
Agreed! Thanks Gary!
This is awesome but longer album version much better.
ok
She also did a version in the 60s with the Temptations.
Will check that out. Thanks!
"Do DIANA ROSS "TOUCH ME IN THE MORNING"...
Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching Angel Holema!
I never write engineers but this is my favorite singer meditating on the high planet and of the opposite tree as she was voted I deal or magazine now ill or magazine now I have to tell you if you've listened to this Crane and you left Diana you are a missing alchemist losing out because Diana on your own is all it's miss you really started to sing sing sing sing check out for instance Touch me in the morning and It's my turn Upside down and I'm coming out And even the ladder part of her on going career after America turned against her over that book Mary Wilson wrote. She's had an on going entrenational success and let's talk about the NEW CD THANK YOU!! A first for Miss Ross 13 new tracks that she co wrote on each one. Play anything from it if you dare shine The Boss the way she really deserves at 77 yes yet still STRONG AND TEACHING THESE DIVA WANNA BE GIRLS HOW ITS REALLY DONE TO STAND THE TEST OF TIME!!!!!
Oh yeah ,love this . JJ was McCartney's hero , played on all those Motown songs , total legend . Diana & D.Harry are my 2 fav female singers. I listened to Marvin&Tammi version the other day & it's probably just as good . Cool review ,stay in the basement Trey, dad's upstairs listening to Boston.
Hey Stuart, I love me some Debbie Harry myself. And I’ll be sure to turn the bass up to drown out the old man :-)

Thanks for watching Angel!
Actually Ain't No Mountain High Enough was recorded before Reach Out and Touch was released and Ashford and Simpson wanted it released first.
ok
You need to see a live performance. Doesn’t have to be for the channel. But a definite must see. And I love both versions. Here’s the link to one of her best performances.
