Let's get this straight...Ms Ross had the most popular version of this song. Went to #1 pop. Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell had a perfectly fine Top 20 pop version of this before Ms Ross, but Ms Ross took it all the way to the top with the definitive version. Yes....and by the way Call Her Miss Ross!

Oh yo I gots to get with you. First of all her catalog spans more than 50 years so yes it’s worth it. Your gut reaction was the same as Berry Gordy Jr and Valerie Simpson told him to just wait. There is another recording of this song by the late greats Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell. There’s was a billboard top ten. Diana Ross’ version here was a billboard number one. Her first solo. Do her catalog it’s worth it. Finally your honesty is appreciated

This song is one long crescendo, gradually building up strength till it bursts free at the end. BizMatik isn't sure where it's going until 6:21 when he reaches his arm out in joyous acceptance, which was just the right move at the climax. Very nice to watch.

Yeah today the "speaking" part is so different. Back in '70 the context was different. "I'm gonna make you love me" was a #2 hit in 1968 (Diana Ross and the Supremes with the Temptations) and in it she speaks in duet with Otis Williams and her voice sparkles. After that Motown writers wanted to capitalize on it. It was unique, sexy, and sweet. There was nothing like it.

The Boss - Do You Know Where Your Going To - Home (from the movie The Wiz) - My Old Piano - Upside Down - Chain REaction - All Of You (with Julio Iglesias) - Swept Away - Every Time You Touched Me - Why Do Fools Fall In Love - It's My Turn - Last Time I Saw Him - Surrender - Touch Me In The Morning and many many more.....

During her tenure with The Supremes, they covered this song (as a duet with The Temptatons). When Berry Gordy was preparing to launch her solo career 2 years later, he hired Ashford & Simpson -- whom had written the song -- to produce the album and pretty much gave them carte blanche. Since the song was popular and had been covered by numerous artists at this point, Ashford & Simpson wanted to take it a more "epic" creative direction. The lyrics were slightly re-worded, with an extra verse being added. It was decided that Ross would speak/narrate the verses instead of singing them. This new arrangement pushed the song past the standard 3 minute mark, with the album version clocking in at 6:19. Berry Gordy felt the song's length would harm it's chances of getting air time on radio stations, so he had an edited down 3:32 version sent out to radio stations as a promo 45rpm single. Ironically, most DJs preferred the full album version and the radio edit was rarely played.

Legendary composition written by then Motown staff writers Ashley and Simpson, and recorded first, by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Diana Ross later, when just beginning her solo career, covered this, and hit it out of the park. Both version are off the charts. Watching a few of Diana Ross and the Supremes performances on the Ed Sullivan, reaffirmed what a dedicated performer Ross was, and how she worked the PR end of it like the professional she was. She is at the top of my list.

Mad respect for Diana Ross. and her place in music history, her song The Boss is my favorite. Stoned Love is so good too.

The song was massively "produced". Lots of overdubbing. Ross had recently gone solo and needed a huge hit to jumpstart her solo career. Motown pulled out all the stops. Written by some of the best: Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson

Hey Biz, hope everything's going well for you. I'm better and ready to make some suggestions, in case you're interested. Diana Ross was definitely a powerhouse among the female artists of her time. And since you've gotten so many great suggestions for more of her beautiful music, I'd like to suggest another female artist that I think you will truly enjoy giving a listen. Especially if you enjoy listening to jazz. This is a live performance "Diana Krall - I've Got You Under My Skin" (by the channel: Kehlog Albran) Now that I'm feeling much better, I'm really looking forward to your reactions. I've missed your fun breakdowns and can't wait to continue to keep great music a live 🎶💜

Marvin Gaye & Tammie Terrell recorded the original version in the 60s. And of course, Diana's version followed in the 70s. The iconic songwriting husband and wife team of Nick Ashford (Rest in Peace) and Valerie Simpson wrote and produced both versions of the song for these Motown artists. Both versions, produced almost a decade apart, hit No.1 on the charts.
