Holy Cow!!! after two days of boring and useless tutorials I found this Golden Nugget of informational bliss..... You sir have my vote for best and most useful informational video on the subject...(Multicam Editing)... I had no idea that this was what I was looking for but you sir have shown me the light. Thank you x's 1 million.
YOU LITERALLY SAVED DAYS OFF MY LIFE! This whole time for my podcasts episodes I was manually cutting the videos between the shots and it was taking forever. Thank you 😭😭😭😭
This is amazing. I am self taught and jumped real fast into multi-angle shots. I would spend SIGNIFICANT amounts of time nudging several video clip angles to sync up my clips to main audio, and even when it “sounded” right to my ear, I’d find problems. And all this before I could start making cuts between angles. With each angle clip stacked, I’m constantly turning them off and on, or even temporarily changing transparencies, before I decided where to make a cut to switch angles. Extremely tedious and time consuming, as you can imagine. A labor of love, of course, but this will make my time lines sooooo much cleaner and easier to sync and edit between angles than I ever imagined. You have just shaved hours and hours off my multi-angle projects. Bless you, sir!
One year to the day that you made this, and I had created a vid with two cameras. Believe it or not... I didn't understand about Multicam. I was going to just place each clip in the timeline, and then manually cut them (I'm a relative beginner). I was doing that when I noticed that the audio was not synced. I did a search to find out how to sync the audio... by following links about syncing, I fell upon this video of Multicam and realized that Multicam-ing is actually what I should be doing. Using the info from this video has opened up my [editing] world, in terms of what I realize I can do now with my project. This is super easier than what I was about to do with the edit, serves my purpose better, and will save me loads of time. I subscribed. Let's see what else you've got... :P
THANK THANK THANK YOU! First off not a lot of videos recently doing this for final cut. Very easy to follow along and it’s just plain and simple love it. You just up’d my video editing for my girly niche. I’m a small growing RUclipsr and just want to always find opportunities to be better. I’m definitely subbing!!
Your videos are outstanding. This is SO helpful! I was going to say you should teach, but then I saw that you do. Your students are lucky. I wish I could take your class! THANK YOU!
This is by far the best Multicam tutorial, just one thing missed out. the way to pick the audio channel you want to have throughout the video , in your primary timeline, right click the clip and change the active audio angel
Thank you so much! I filmed my friend's TEDx talk and had no idea what I was getting into with multicam. :) I'll try not to induce too much panic amongst the viewers.
Hey Tom - cool video! Any idea if you can select compound clips for multicam editing? Create multicam clip is greyed out for me when I have one selected.. any idea of a workaround? tx
Hey Brendan! I don't think you can create multicam clips with compound clips since the compound clips still contain the original clips that were merged. You could export a compound clip and then import that file to use as a multicam clip.
ya just blew my mind... i was looking at editing go pro footage with canon footage and found this... my eyes have been opened! I'm saving this for later... thank you...
Great introduction to this amazing feature. Literally my first session on any editing software for over 15 years, and boy...! Lots has changed but got the swing of it quick thanks to Multicam and you Tom. Thanks so much.
Helped me out immensely man thank you! I just switched from Premiere on my Mac to Final Cut during a multicam shoot id done with 5 angles and over 400GB in clips and proxies! My computer was failing to move the mouse fast enough, whereas Final Cut has been a breeze! Thanks again!
oooooh your TIPS in this Tutorial = A God-Send!!! I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the ANGLES to appear in order to easily cut from one camera angle to the other -- and something you showed me in this extremely helpful video = SAVED my night!!! I've literally watched 1/2 dozen of others on editing multi-cam shots with FCPX -- but THIS was the saving Grace! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANNNNK YOU!!!!! Fan for LIFE! :D
What a great video! Tom, you are a master at explaining how to use MultiCam in Final Cut Pro. This is the first video of yours I've watched. SUBSCRIBED
This is such a great tutorial - I've been wanting to find this feature for ages and you've taken me through it step by step - perfect! Thanks so much Tom!
I keep coming back to this. This is such a helpful video! Although your video has done enough to at least point me the way, I hope someday you do another Multicam editing on FCPX with at least 2 different audio. That'd be super helpful!
6:30 THANK YOU FOR THE TIP! Editing a music video using Multicam editing for the first time but couldn't figure out where the other angles are located. 🤯😅
Thanks so much!! This video is very very helpful for my situation. I just successfully made my multicam editing in my CFX work. It's perfect now. Thanks again!
Thanks -- just watched this (twice) and it was a huge help to me (a novice with Final Cut Pro) as I try to edit a motovlog with 2 gopros. Big thumbs up, and subscribed.
I've found that multicam works pretty similarly across both apps, which is awesome. I actually learned how to do this from watching a Premiere tutorial and trying to transfer the concepts.
Awesome tutorial man, I love how simple you break it down to be and easy to follow. I'm starting to edit 2 angles for my drumming videos and this is perfect! FCPX takes a lot of time out of the editing by aligning all the clips and audio!
This is so cool. I'm currently using Final Cut Pro Trial and I would always use the vid from each individual camera and then split the frames and match the audio, but this way is much faster and easier. Too bad I only have 14 more days with the Trial and I can't afford to buy Final Cut Pro, but hopefully one day I'll be able to and I'll enjoy it more.
Oh thanks- I shoot with three but mostly two and gosh it’s overwhelming. I knew the program could do it but it but never got around to figuring it out.
3rd video I watch on Multicam and the first I understand! Thanks for making it simple! This is awesome! I'll be creating some awesome interviews in the very near future:-)
I'm so glad to hear that the video was helpful! The multicam feature is super helpful. Plus there's just something realyl satisfying about switching between the shots like you're directing a tv show 😁
I'm really grateful that you did this and hope you can help. I've watched yours and four other tutorials, read the manual, and can't get past this - I create the multi-cam angle exactly as you describe, drag it to the project, and see both camera angles in the viewer fine. However I never see the blade no matter what I do and cannot get it to change between the angles. Assuming I'm missing something simple. Can you or anyone else here help? Mahalo! (thanks)
If you’re working with two angles, you should be able to switch between them simply by pressing 1 and 2 on your keyboard. You should also be able to bring up the blade by pressing B. If that’s not working, it would be a bug in Final Cut, which sometimes is resolved by restarting the computer. If that’s STILL doesn’t work, Apple support has a live chat option that’s pretty helpful, and I’m sure they can walk you through a diagnosis. It’s time consuming, but usually effective. Good luck!
@@tombuck Thanks so much. I can select the blade manually or with "B" when the cursor is over the timeline. When I am over the two angles in the angle viewer, I just get a beep when I either click on either of the two views and same when I press 1 or 2. Restart didn't help - that's been my first "go-to" move since I got my first Mac in 86. I do appreciate the help and will try their live chat option - one thing I've never done before. Aloha!
Edit - I figured it out. The angle editor was open, and I could not figure out how to close it. Apparently what that is open you cannot do the cuts. I had to go back and double click on the project file and was then able to see the blade. Mahalo again!
I knew I was missing something. I just did my first multicam edit in Final Cut Pro, but I forgot about the Angles View at the top, and so I wound up editing the hard way..by right clicking on the clip and choosing the view from their each time. I guess I should have rewatched this episode...lol

I SPENT 8 HOURS EDITING A 4 MINUTE DRUM COVER DOING MULTI-CAM EDITING ON FINAL CUT ON MY FIRST GO.
THANK YOU SO MUCH AHHHHHHHHHH
Came here after watching two other tutorials because I failed to grasp how multicam worked and this one did the job. Thumbs up.
Nice! I’m so glad to hear it 👍
Wow, this is the first time I have truly understood how Multicam on FCPX works. THANK YOU SOOOOOO much.
You’re welcome! It can sometimes be tricky to get the footage to “merge” together properly, but after that it’s smooth sailing.
