I'll be monitoring to ensure Josh's feelings about this show are objectively correct.
😂
Proper.
There's an interview on a great talk show where Emilia Clarke says she has crush on Matt Le Blanc, also a guest, who admits he never saw the show except for the first episode - Clarke smiles coyly and laughingly responds,
"Well you saw the important bit" (sic.)
Graham Norton?
I'm not his publicist...🙂
Pay close attention to the map during the title credits. It changes according to the houses that are relevant to the episode. Also it gives you a sense of where everyone is in relation to each other.
I’ll keep that in mind 🧐
It's possibly the first show where I never skipped through openings. Both the scenery and music, top notch.
It's also worth noting that it changes as different areas and factions are introduced.
@@targetaudience / Another recommendation for close map watching. Plus it's just a very cool TV intro.
Truly one of the best made first episodes of anything, ever
So good.
The best 4 seasons on television.
Season 1 is the best page to screen adaptation I've ever seen.
Not perfect but I thoroughly enjoyed the substories in S5
11:59 The difference of reaction of someone who has seen it and knows whats going to happen, and someone who just watched a kid pushed out a window.
Fun fact: a lot of scenes were filmed in Northern Ireland - interiors, Winterfell, Kings Road etc. The place where the Stark kids were practicing their archery in Winterfell is actually a car park.
You two have to watch Black Sails. Probably the most underrated show of the last 50 years!
it is certainly better than this show.
@@MusikCassette not really, edgy take though. Last episodes are not so great in both shows, but GoT is much more satisfying and better written. Yep, mean it. Like both though
Loved Black Sails!
Black Sails is pretty bad ass throughout.
I recently watched this for this first time and I enjoyed it far longer into its run than I expected. Hope you have a blast.
Thanks!
Winter is coming.
I also just watched it but I only like the first 4 seasons
Same for me I waited until it was on the 6th season and just watched it like crazy it was so good. Liked it more than I thought AND I was spoiler free. I made sure to protect myself.
I just put together that the only reason Drogo knew the word "No" was because that was what his victims would have been saying to him during previous rapes. Hence why he associated it with sex in general, that's the only time he'd heard it.
You have become my favorite reactors this minute! Star Trek and Game Of Thrones are my 2 most beloved worlds.
♥️
The King Robert Baratheon is played by English actor Mark Addy, who I believe did mainly theatre work until staring in the Full Monty film in the late 1990's and getting into more film and TV work, he's a great actor.
I’m really happy about this! My favorite reactors reacting to my favorite television show!!
If you're looking for a pallette cleanser, The Good Place is a fun, intelligently written comedy where you're never ahead of the characters. Or the plot. Or really the entire premise.
The Good Place is one of my favorite shows in the past 2 decades
❤
now you watch even TWO of my favourite franchises. 🎉
Spent three months in Ireland, and we did the set tour for this show in Northern Ireland. Two highlights; the exit from the ‘wall’ to the wild lands was just a doorway built into the side of a quarry. Hilarious. We also got to dress up as greyjoys, and visited the shore where they filmed several of the iron islands scenes. Really fun tour, hosted by the fellow who was the double/stand in for the Onion Knight…
In addition, i lived on the island of Gozo, where they filmed the Drogo/Targaryan wedding, at a place called Dwerja Bay. They brought in tones of sand, to cover the parking lot, and set the scene. When they failed to remove the sand, the locals were furious, and the Maltese government banned Game of Thrones from filming thereafter on their island. The filming locations had the change to Spain for later seasons. Also, the large formation, known as the Azure Window was lost in 2017, to a storm. So this is one of the few records of its amazing beauty. We missed seeing it by 4 months!!
Used to enter King's Landing at Medina, too.
Still waiting for the next book to come out. Any day now...
I blew snot out of my nose on this one. 😅
8:22 the cut of a 100% blurred image - "oh there's the nudity" is my kind of meta humor
Mark Addy, the well-know Shakespearian actor. 😉
He did great, despite not being seven feet tall like in the book.
Well if you can't get Brian Blessed...
Oh, wow. Strap yourself in, Josh. This will be quite a ride. I enjoyed it all the way to the very end. Some of the best dialog I've ever heard on the small screen, and maybe even on the big screen. You are in for a treat!
The King is played by Mark Addy, who was in A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger.
Oh HECK yeah!
This show has the most recurring characters in any show I've ever seen.
I hope you guys keep watching, not cause I love the show. But because Josh reacts more. Bigger sells from Josh
Fun fact: The scar on Jason Momoa's left eyebrow is real.
He got it in a bar fight in November 2008, shortly before he finished his run on Stargate: Atlantis.
The wound, from a broken beer glass, required 140 stitches and reconstructive surgery.
The first 4 seasons of this show are some of my favorite television ever, hope you enjoy the show while they're still working with the book material.
This show hooked me in the first five minutes.
Nonspoiler advice to Josh: If you have time and it doesn't eff up the way you like to go through a series, rewatch this first episode again (maybe even twice more) and try to mentally nail down as many names, faces and connections as possible before moving on to the rest of S1. Or double back if you've watched just a couple more already since this was loaded. For two reasons:
One: I felt like the first episode had a flood of characters, and I was somewhat overwhelmed. And you ain't seen nothing yet. There are literally two dozen "main characters," you could say, each season and then dozens of others who aren't on as much but still important. Knowing who these folks are and their relationships to each other from S1E1 can help you absorb the "tsunami" of additional characters to come. You're lucky you have Alex, who can answer questions without giving spoilers.
Two: It's really good to understand all the back history and threads they presented S1E1 going forward. This episode is foundational and resonates throughout the run of the show.
I liked this show from the start, and by S1E3 or S1E4, I was hooked. It's hard to believe, but this first episode is truly a very modest presentation of the wildly ambitious epic they'll deliver as this unfolds.
Excited y'all are doing this. I liked TNG and DS9 better, but this is pretty close. And the world building is unmatched to any show I've ever watched. And personally, I liked it all the way through. My main criticism was some of the scenes were too graphic for my tastes.
Ooh, I have very complicated feelings about this, hehe. Hopefully, Josh will enjoy it.
You and me both!
FYI, when they were casting the show, for Tyrion, if they couldn't get Peter Dinklage, then they wouldn't do the show. Bonus, with Peter Dinklage, they got Lena Headey, who was a friend & he suggested her for the part of Cersei. Glad you're enjoying it.
There's a point where the show ran out of George RR Martin's books to follow, so they took his notes of where he "thinks" he would have gone with further books. Then, there is a point where Martin's involvement dropped completely. I would be curious if Josh could figure out when each of those 2 events happened as he watches the show.
Thanks for reminding me just how old I am...😆 Hard to believe you were in MIDDLE SCHOOL when this came out.
Was glad to get two *TNG* episodes yesterday, but disappointed that that probably meant I wouldn't get one today, but . . . OMG!
*GoT!* All is forgiven my sweet summer children.
EDIT: Sweet summer *child.*
lol, we posted our new weekly schedule a couple days ago. You can see it on our community posts
strongly disagree.
as for how closely season 1 stuck to the book, "the things I do for love" is exactly 1/10 into the paperback edition
Most of season 1 is pretty much identical to the book. With the obvious exception of things it doesn't cover because of the shorter format.
@youdyed Which is where the issues with this series come creeping in, when they run out of Martin's books to reference as the first draft scripts.
Never saw this and wanted to see it, but the guy who created it wrote well for the beauty and the beast series with Linda Hamilton and Ron Pearlman
What Josh mentions at the end about not getting into fantasy media like shows or movies, I think it's b/c fantasy is a hard genre to pull off well? I mean, sure, we got a great trilogy with LoTR, but outside of that, you can probably count the number of genuinely excellent shows or movies on one, maybe two hands? I'm trying to think of anything else that even competes with LoTR for me.
True, and Josh hasn’t seen LOTR since childhood. Alex loves those as well.
This series broke my heart, but I'll watch your reactions to it in the hopes that one day you'll also have your heart broken and then decide to love again with House of the Dragon.
Here we go, This is going to be great.
Winter is coming!
Love it when new sweet summer children join the brotherhood. Looking forward to the journey.
Us too!
I also watched this show very late. But now I love it (with exceptions). So I hope you keep it up.
Super excited about this watch through!
awesome looking forward to the next episode
Love this show. New sub 😊
Let’s go!!
sooo did you watch it past season 4?
Aww man we've just waited for Yesterday's Enterprise, now we have to wait for... This is going to be harder than not spoiling Tasha, but we are strong (is that a spoiler for things that happened before this?)
As someone from Northern England, Sansa has a very effected southern accent, just like those whose parents can afford to send their children to public school (our version of private school, we are weird). Someone who's parents want better for them than they can provide, but they can afford. What we would call purposely posh.
Have you guys not seen Lord of the Rings either? If you haven't, it is hands down the greatest fantasy story and movies ever made. Sean Bean is in that as well.
This is going to be fun.
It's a great series with a slow burn quality about it, excellent ongoing story.
you are watching all my fav shows.
Yesssss! What an awesome trifecta of shows for us to enjoy! GoT is set in such a rich world with so much history and lore. After you've become a geek about it all, it's really hard not to spoil anything for a first time watcher. I think Alex did a great job of adding his thoughts without going into spoilers. It's a fine line to walk, nice job 👍 love your content, can't wait for the next one!
Zero spoilers, but this is how i explain it as someone who refused to watch "the dragon show" and now it's my favorite show ever: much like The Walking Dead isn't about zombies, or Breaking Bad about drug dealing, Game of Thrones is not about dragons and knights... It's about people and how they react to really high stress situations. Those reactions are informed by personalities, societal expectations, etc, but ultimately it's about human drama. And damn is that drama JUICY.
I also resisted for years because of dragons, etc. I liked the way they handled the fantasy elements.
The King is played by Mark Addy. He’s done lots of British TV before and after GoT. I knew him as Roland in A Knight’s Tale with Heath Ledger.
Fantasy movies ended up with a certain reputation in the 80s with all the sword and sorcery movies. Sometimes they were called boobs and beasts films. Quality was very lacking.
There were a few exceptions like "Dragonslayer," "Conan the Barbarian" and "Krull" but overall that's true. Addy has mostly done comedies but he's also done some serious work like "Red Riding: 1983."
Curious to know what shows you guys watched growing up or what you typically watch now when you’re NOT filming a reaction video?
Lol this will be fun.
First surprise "OH!" within 30 seconds.
This will be a hell-of-a journey.
welcome to "Bring the blur mask": The Show.
Aquaman? That was Ronan Dex!
I coulda sworn it was Conan.
Well the two of them can settle it as Satedans! 😅lol
Why was I so proud of Alex for saying “expository?”
because he did not say sexpository.
Season 1 was just good enough to get me to read the books..
I have a love/hate relationship with this show. But I’m going to love watching your reactions!
Watched your TOS run, joint patreon with TNG, then you started BSG (my second love after Star Trek - DS9 my favourite btw 😉) and now GoT.
I definitely need more time…
Other stuff i love (when you finished all of that in a decade 😉): Babylon 5 and for some fun „Chuck“ (full of Star Trek guest stars) or Eureka
My first impression of Game of thrones was it was a dark fantasy Soap Opera, with various families interacting with rivalries and alliances…think “The Young and the Restless” meets “Lord of the Rings”
There's an element of truth to that! And I hate to say it as a longtime "Y&R" fan, but GoT runs "Rings" around Y&R.
Yep! once you realize the Starks are the Abbotts, and the Lannisters are the Newmans, it all falls into place 😄
@@BubuBORG | MIND. BLOWN.
Woah, this whole time I was convinced Alex was playing up how he was single or looking for a gf lol.
I wanna watch it with you but I also don’t. I didn’t want to go through this again 😂 but here I am.
yay!
Game of Thrones is what happens when you start with one of the most talented fiction writers alive. He writes a series of novels that is so mind blowing, Hollywood keeps offering to buy it, and adapt it into a trilogy of movies. Martin continually says no. Then, two friends and wannabe showrunners offer to produce those books into a show, not a movie trilogy. That and because these two friends correctly answer a question that Martin asks them about a hinted at mystery in the books; Martin agrees to sell these two friends, Dan and Dave, the rights. Sounds great, right?
But there is a problem. Several actually. But there is one problem that truly damns this series, as mind blowing as for a time that it is. That problem is that Martin does not believe in humanity, on a fundamental level. He doesn't believe that people can truly grow and change. He doesn't believe in any universal truth. Martin takes postmodernism all the way to nihilism. And when your protagonists are struggling in an imagined world, where there is no Truth, no possibility of redemption, nothing to really strive for but a bigger piece of the pie, well, you get the ending that GoT had.
Many will say that it was Dan and Dave's fault, and certainly some blame can be put upon them. But they were hired to adapt a series, not write an end to one that had only been finished in as much as Martin knew what his characters end point was.
I have read all five books of ASoIaF five times each. To say that I loved the series for six seasons would be an understatement. But beginning this journey will only end in disappointment for you.
I would skip the show. The tragedy is, Martin is an incredibly talented writer. And the show's acting, directing, and production are all top notch. It is truly sad that all that talent ultimately goes nowhere.
Watch The Wire, or Deadwood instead. You'll be the happier for it.
I love ,you love King Robert! Seven Hells
A show about Shakespearian tragedies that ends in it's own Shakespearian tragedy.
Yeah, I'm not going through that again.
I watched it for awhile but I didn't finish. Eventually I was just tired.
i liked the end
Dudes... with Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and now Game of Thrones, how is a guy working from home supposed to get any work done?!
A lot of reactors to GoT have map of Westeros and other lands to better understand where someone is or where they are going. Consider...
Are you guys going to watch the lores and histories after each season?
This will probably be harder on Alex cause it will be hard not to spoil anything.
I LOVED this show... right up until they jumped the shark. and like Josh said, I play D&D, so I couldn't help but see.... possibilities. :-)
Yaaas! 👏🏾👏🏾
Whatcha grinning about there, Josh?
I started watching it after the South Park parody. Butters said something that really got my attention.
south park perfected the GoT intro
Hey Josh andalex, if you'd done any reactions to the Harry Potter series, there's a few connections on this series
I'm deeply sorry for what is in your future ... sorry.
But an excellent quick run to the top.
oh damn, nice
Winter Is Coming
Another HBO show worth watching is His Dark Materials.
So excited you are watching. Ignore the nit-pickers. Make up your own mind what you like and don’t like.
W
GoT was a good idea that GRR just failed to bring to any sort of conclusion. It died under its own weight, slowly going bad while they tried to squeeze more money out of a story that deserved to end seasons before it finally did...
There are some negative opinions about the later seasons but I wouldn't really let that affect your opinion until you get there. It doesn't mean EVERYTHING that happens is awful just some decisions by the show runners could have been handled better, enough to where people did get angry. Criticism is deserved but it's not a total shit show though I'm sure some would disagree. Heck there's plenty of hate from some folks for seasons of the show that are legitimately epic television at the peak of the genre.
Was hoping you'd watch HoTD because holy hell it's good!😊
Perhaps one day if we watch all of this first
Just so you know, there are references in some episodes of GoT that spoil pretty much all of HotD. :)
The show has the unfortunate habit of turning what was consensual sex in the books into rape scenes. It happens multiple times, and the scene with Dany and Drogo is the first one. In the book, he only knows the word "no." But his first "no" is in response to seeing her in tears. He knows she's frightened, so rather than forcing himself on her, he gently seduces her. The scene ends with him saying "No?" and her replying "Yes." It's one of the earliest expectations that gets flipped in the book, because up until that point we've only heard about how fearsome and savage the Dothraki are. That the scene was changed is probably the earliest sign of what the showrunners would eventually doom the show with. They recreate events of the books, while altering or omitting the context that gives it meaning.
Wait…. If you didn’t recognize sean bean … have you not seen LOTR
So have you guys not seen Lord Of The Rings, if you’ve only seen images of Sean Bean?
Alex loves LOTR, Josh hasn’t seen them since childhood
Add The X Files into the rotation at some point.
There’s way too many episodes of The X-Files for us to jump in at this time. Maybe select episodes?
@@targetaudienceI think it would be much better to save X-Files for a full watch, one day. Even if it's years from now. There's no rush, no need to write off a potential full watch for the sake of a few cherry picked episodes that may not even hit like they're supposed to because they got cherry picked. Just my opinion
1st BSG now GoT, you boys are becoming my new favourite reactors
Let’s goo!!!
Agreed. If they start doing Black Sails, I might just have to recommend the channel to everyone I know.
I just started rewatching GoT recently. The last two seasons left a really bad taste in my mouth, but......eh, the first seasons are just SO good, that I feel it deserves another watch anyway.
House of Dragons is also really good, so far. Despite a somewhat rough first episode (which actually made me vomit. I'm not even kidding).
Ignore the later seasons haters. There are some incredible episodes right up to the end of season 8. Just because some fans couldn’t accept the final ending doesn’t mean it was poorly done.
I think it’s widely accepted that the last seasons were quite poor in contrast to the excellent first few seasons. Check almost any article, or social media post. I’ve yet to meet someone in life who admits to liking them or that dreadful ending. There was so much promise in the show, too. It’s such a shame. Some fans love it, and that’s fine, but they are the minority.
There are some gem episodes in the later episodes though. And maybe t these guys will love the last few seasons and ending like you. Whatever, I think it’s certain they will notice the significant drop in quality.
Ever gonna go back to Quantum Leap??
Not in our plans currently
More Battlestar or Stargate SG1
BSG on Thursdays!
@@targetaudience SG1 would actually be nice.
I watch all your other reactions but I can't watch these again. 10 years ago I read all the books and watched religiously but I just don't get it anymore.
Lena Headey (Cersei) was a great Sarah Connor, but Emilia Clarke (Daenerys) was even better.
