Hippo & Monkey Pals

This hippo-monkey duo seem to be the best of buddies at the San Diego Zoo!
Pygmy Hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis liberiensis) Mostly nocturnal in nature, this mammal is solitary and shy. Their herbivore diet calls for constant foraging through dense forests in Guinea to Nigeria. Pygmy hippos are related to river hippopotamus and were discovered as late as the 1800's due to their elusive nature. IUCN status: vulnerable
Wolf's Guenon (Cercopithecus wolfi wolfi) Home is near rivers/streams in forests and woodlands around central Africa. The illegal bushmeat trade and agricultural growth is threatening their survival. IUCN status: vulnerable
