    People need to know that the bit-holder on the Roxon takes 4mm "precision" bits, not 1/4" like the SOG.

  • @Sheepleton
    @Sheepleton 4 месяца назад +5

    You can find the SOG for $38 and it's bit driver is it's saving grace. I bought extended 2 inch impact bits and some nut drivers for mine and it's freaking great. Use it every day.

  • @ravendon
    @ravendon Год назад +15

    Roxon hands down. It's $20 cheaper, has awesome scissors/shears that can easily cut paracord or a seatbelt, has a box cutter, can use bits with an adapter, has a glass breaker, and it's a lot shorter than the powerpint.

    Nice video. If I used the scissors more often, I would go with Roxon. However, I rarely use them and they are perfect for everything I use the scissors for on the powerpint. The power pint would be perfect if they switched out the serrated blade for a saw. I am not mad at the serrated blade though.

    I have both, and (after a few exchanges - SOG QC is unpredictable) the Powerpint wins easily, as long as the scissors work. That's the deal breaker for me.

  • @dobie-at-home
    @dobie-at-home 2 года назад +14

    I’d say get ‘em both! 😁
    That’s a tough comparison for budget tools, because SOG’S compound leverage pliers and that hole for bits or a driver are hard to beat, but Roxon’s scissors are one of a kind. And I realize I’ve already said this many times, so sorry for the repeats.
    You caught me off guard in a reply to another post where you said SOG has sold to another company… I was completely unaware of that. It’s kinda sad in a way, because those guys started out with a sort of dedication to the old Vietnam era MACV-SOG unit of the Army. Good tools, bad tools, or whatever, they were always a little special in their mission. Oh well… the one constant is change. 🤷🏻‍♂️

      True! I assume competition is so hard that when a large company like GSM Outdoors offers a lot of money it's seems like a smart choice to accept. But both of these are great tools!

      My bit driver holder does not hold anything in place and the bits tend to spin. It’s not a good fit. I do like it tho. I am currently evaluating two different multi tools. One being the Powerpint.

      IMO pliers are better without internal spring, it can brake and freeze the tool, after years of service.
      On scissors instead the spring is mandatory, allows proper tensions between edges for better cutting (Sog should have the scissors spring redesigned for better toughness and full scissors opening for sharpening).
      Gears are not mandatory but still cool and original, I like them.
      Both pliers work well in the end.

    The roxon has better scissors, but the SOG takes the cake for me in every other respect. I have one and have carried it daily for a couple years now. So many little design advantages: The pliers are actually usable. can't emphasize this enough. The compound leverage and head geometry is just superior. The steel is better. The ergonomics are great, it's easy to open either of the knives one handed, or flip the tool open like a fidget toy. The skeletonized awl is *solid*. And awls should not have a sharp side. They're for poking not cutting. The can opener actually works. And the hex gap is so handy. I think both tools are made in china, but SOG at least started as an independent American company. Roxon is doing a lot of interesting, innovative stuff but their tools just aren't quite there for me at this point.

    Good comparison. PowerPint is better tool, but the scissors are really awful on mine. The M2 scissors are much better but are more like mini shears than scissors. I'm going to try and put some SAK 74mm scissors in my PowerPint.

    I'm not a big Roxon fan, the rounded shape looks really dated, but to be honest ergonomically maybe its a logical choice. The price is the main issue with Roxon tools, looks like when they need to put their own R&D in to the products they not competitive enough compared with wave / gerber / other clones.

  • @user-zx2oi1co8b

    Thank you for the comparison. I have many multitools, but the powerpint has been on my belt for many years. I am a HVAC tech, too and I can't count how many trips from attic to basement this thing saved. I bought the Roxon M2, too, but it is not the same level tool. People complain about the scissors on the powerpint. It doesn't cut tough things, but it cuts my nose hair perfectly without hurting. It has the knife to cut other things. Only thing it is missing is a good flat head. I had to grind one of the stupid bottle openers to make it a flat head screw driver. Is there any better alternative of powerpint out there? I don't mind paying little more.

    • @hvacbudget8600

      If you want a new tool the same pocketable size of better quality then unfortunately the answer is no. If you don't mind spending too much on the used market the Leatherman Leap is surprisingly capable for a kid themed multi tool. And Gerber's Octane is not as tool rich but a smaller size as well. I keep waiting for someone to make a better SOG PowerPint but it hasn't happened yet.

    • @steved9060
      @steved9060 11 месяцев назад

      Can I ask why you don't just carry a couple of 1/4" bits to go in the end? For me that's the selling point of the Powerpint, especially as it sits right on the centre line, making it much easier to use.

    • @hvacbudget8600
      @hvacbudget8600  2 года назад +1

      As far as I know the company that bought out SOG is going to be doing away with lifetime warranty. They used to be on paper similar to Gerber and Leatherman from my understanding. I have heard SOG is the worst at warranty issues.

  • @smuniz9987
    @smuniz9987 2 месяца назад

    “Slightly longer screwdrivers?” I am pretty sure locking tools on the SOG is a pretty big advantage and most people would choose that over the Roxon. People will naturally give up some features for half the price which it seems like you are leaning towards the Roxon.

      @ravendon where are those at? I'm thinking about getting the M2 over Sog. Sog scissors are bad, I do like the serrated blade and file on the Sog. But I have a Swios knife that already has those features. Plus Sog doesn't need a seat belt cutter when you have a knife and scissors. Roxon comes with bits already for the price ans can't be beat.

    Cool video.
    I have both, close call, I like the design of the Sog that it is brilliant but for scissors the Roxon wins hands down.
    The SOG will need a gen2 evolution with better scissors, suggested removal of useless rescue hook to make space for longer, bigger, beefed scissors with also redesigned tough spring to allow full opening for sharpening (acute angles).
    No need for tools symmetry, it will have 4 and 5 but with far better scissors.
    Upgrade everything at 9cr at 58hrc.

    Not really feeling either one honestly. Roxon scissors are cool but my leatherman squirts scissors have been good enough for my edc uses. And for me the squirt would be my choice for a small mt. It is on the smaller side but it weighs nothing. Half the tools on these are either useless for me or I carry a larger tool that does the job better.
