- Diff Build - The Way I do it from Start to Finish: Secrets Included is an entire process of disassembly to REM treatment to reassembly. NO, it is not by the Mazda book. It is the way I have done it hundreds of times, and it works every time!
Sure, I use homemade tools, but you can make them and follow this guide to build your Miata Differential too.

I feel your pain on that hose connector. The aircraft engine shop I used to work at up in Tulsa, we had those. Not sure if we got them from the Snap-on guy or what but periodically they would pop off like that all the time. LOL

I followed your in-depth video last winter and put in a 3.3 gear set on my Ls swapped Miata. I've been driving all summer including a track day. Changing the fluid today and there's barely a trace of metal shavings. 100% recommend this video.

Where'd you get your diff from, is it in the stock NB case?
@@gregorychedmeir4253 It was my stock 1996 torsen type 1 with both arms reinforced with aluminum plate on poly bushings.

Thanks for posting this, It really asnered many of the questions I had regarding setting up a miata diff as I am currently in process of swapping out an NB open 4.1 out and installing a stock FC clutch type diff with 84-85 GSL 3.909 R&P to go with the 6 speed trans i'm installing
I swapped my rear end a few years ago cause the Viscous finally gave out. I’ve upgraded to a 95 but still an open diff. One of my axle seals has gone bad but I keep it filled. Sadly it’s been making a high pitched sound at certain rpm’s and figured it was wearing down and would need a rebuild. This is definitely going to help me. I will be sure to follow this to a T for my rebuild.

@@jpm I notice you don't measure the towers in the diagonal fashion as mentioned in the Manual. Ever had a problem with the sidebearing preload?

I don't measure because it's never right doing it that way in my experience. Seems strange but feeling it works best for me. It's worked on the few hundred of these I've done, but to answer your question, I used to measure until I found out that the results aren't always the same.
So you tightened the pinion nut to crush the tube around 200 but after putting the seal in you only tighten to 125/130?

I have a question on the OS Giken diff you talked about.. what diff fluid do you use with that.. os giken only or did you find another that also works well?.. (the os giken fluid seems difficult to find here in sweden, so would be good to hear if you found an alternative that works with those diffs?)
Great video! I gave it a like and will be coming back to this if and when I put a 3.63 ring&pinion in my car. I will probably still buy a used OEM 3.63 torsen but I like the idea of rebuilding it and ensuring it is in nice shape. I do not intend on doing anything more than spirited driving in the mountains and maybe an HPDE day on track just for fun. Would you still recommend removing the dampener if the car will be on the street 98% of the time or is it better just to remove it? The added concern of it coming loose might not be worth the reduced NVH. Is the NVH without it that bad if the car still have rubber MazdaComp engine and differential mounts?
Did you press out the old pinion bearing races or did you reuse them? Either I missed it or you didn't show this step in the video. Great how to, I look forward to referencing this when I bastardize my torsen with 4.77 gears.
First off, thank you for making this video. Im about to install an OSG in my car and am wondering if new side bearings are necessary assuming they look/feel to be in good condition?
Since my pinion wont be coming out, this job should be as simple as transferring the ring gear over and setting backlash via the adjustment screws/wheels?

I was wondering about the carrier bearings and the preload, I may have missed it but it looks like you didn't set preload for the carrier bearings. Would love to know reasoning behind this as I'm currently on the fence about whether or not I should buy a 200mm outside micrometer. Interested to hear what you think.

Glad it was helpful! In the video, I mention that the I do this by feel, which is how I learned over time. You always need some "wiggle" room in there, and I guess I have just found the happy spot and keep doing it that way. Sorry this isn't an exact numbers kind of answer you were after!
Does the blue paint need to be cleaned off before adding differential fluid?
Could I install that speedmaster diff in my 1.8 open diff?
If I am solely doing the pinion seal, is a new washer required? and does the preload have to be measured? I read that on the forums it has to spin at 5 inch lbs, Can I just torque it to 125 and call it good so long as it spins nice and has no free play? Thanks for the info!
Hey, my 91 miata diff sometimes is making a whine noise on decel when hot, u think if i just adjust backlash might help out without replacing anything?
Thanks for this write up. I watched it last Sunday after ordering a diff.
I set my backlash to .0051 so I just need to do my axle seals, clean the mating surfaces and RTV it tomorrow.
I notice you didn’t even talk about preload, so I’m just assuming good and tight on the adjustment wheels is enough?
Because I’d rather not get an 8inch micrometer 😂
That is one of those things that I do by feel and know when tight is too tight and lose is to lose.
Which year model diff is this? I have a 93 NA that I am trying to figure out. Is this crush sleeve in the older differentials? If i don't change anything can I use the old sleeve?

Is there any downside to taking the damper off for a for a turbo street miata that occasionally sees the track ? Or is the extra vibration that noticeable daily driving ?
I'd assume it probably wont be terrible, as the auto trans ones didn't have the damper, and none of the 1.6 diffs did either

Hey, I'm in no way a mechanic so I'm having issues trying to understand one thing. I orderded a replacemente bearing and it came in 2 pieces, the bearing and kind of a shell where it sits. The thing by watching your video is that I don't see those outside shells of the bearings anywhere. Are they installed in the diff already and you did not manipulate them or do you not install them at all? also does the pinion gear bearing not sit on that and it sits directly in the crush spacer?
Is the order from pinion gear: washer, bearing, crush spacer, outer bearing thing, other outer bearing thing, bearing, washer, oil seal? or am I missing something?
One more thing, I bought my diff dissasembled so I couldn't get any reference before tearing it appart :(
What about ultrasonic cleaning instead of solvent?
I do both. Solvent tank, then rinse, then ultrasonic, then final rinse and blow dry.

Hi, thanks for the in depth rebuild information. I have an issue with my NB miata which makes a horrid noise intermittently. ruclips.net/video/_46fgQBxC48/видео.html
I took the torsen 2 diff off and took it to a local transmission specialist who though it was a good diff (took the housing off but no further disassembly). Backlash was good, no damage to the teeth no chunks of metal in the oil when changed.
Put it all back together and the issue is still there. I don't know if it's the diff, but the problem happens when driving in a straight line, there are frequent metallic sounding pings when driving along that precede the noise.
I've changed the brakes, rotors, pads and am at a loss unless it's something hidden in the torsen mechanism or maybe the gearbox. Just wondering if you have any thoughts or ideas as to what I might try? Drive shafts?

Where can I get parts to rebuild my differential? Everywhere I search I’m just bombarded with parts for GMC Yukon diffs and other bullshit nobody cares about
