So did EVERY woman watching it. The whole movie worked it's way up to this, and Mayo's character, Lady Barbara, was no shrinking violet, and laid it on the line. He finally took her up on it, but they WERE in love. This was the first adventure heroine I could identify with as a teenager.
Hornblower - tall, dark, handsome and painfully honorable and discrete in matters of the heart - all the things that the real naval hero of the times (Nelson) was not!

LOL, This is what everyone complained about Hollywood messing up stories. Hornblower was a lonely man in Foresters series. The 8 episode A&E special is more to life. You can see from the comments I'm the only man in the house. Its so funny, if I had the $10 for the DVD, I'd buy it, just to get a good laugh at how far we came today. I bet Mr. Peck didn't even throw up as a Midshipman. And the acting here is horrible. So for my money I got a 2008 Used set of the A&E special for $13 + $4 shipping
