Shane you come up with some realy creative and fun stuff. This is pretty cool and yes, please do more videos like this one showing innovative and creative ways to make your smart home setup smarter and more interesting. It took me a long time to come around to the idea of Homekit, but now I'm finding it adds a new dimension without taking away from anything I had working before...lots of things! Thank you.
Except Shane diod not come up with any of this - that was Apple and the 3rd party accessory makers. Notice the airpod case and remotes have built in airtag holders > 3rd party. Shane simply bought all this stuff and synced up the functionality that someone else progremmed and did a video on what was available. Not really seeing anything original or unique that Shane specifically "came up with" on his own.
I never realized AirTags could act as NFC tags like this! One of your best tips…I can think of tons of uses. Thanks for sharing! Could you do some more fitness related videos about specific things you automate at the gym or when you work out?
This is great Shane…I bought some NFC tags off Amazon recently, but they are a bit hit and miss. Sometimes they trigger, sometimes they don’t. Have some other ones on the way. If they don’t work AirTags may be an option. I set up one to open/close my soma blind depending on the current state of the blind. I have also set one up to control my entrance light.
This is great! Please do a Top 10 creative and fun stuff to do witch "AirTags Shorcuts", showing how to configure them. I think this could be really cool. Could be part of a series, created based on your own experience (like in this video) but also considering the recommendation and experience that other people are commenting here, for example, using the AirTag in the remote to active a Movie Scene (like changing lights by time of day, waking cup the Apple TV and TV or Movie proyector, sending a message to family about "movie is about to start", selecting the right movie app.. you know, that cool smart stuff). Anyway, this is function is great and this is just an idea ;O). Thanks!
Awesome video. I haven’t seen how far NFC shortcuts have come in years. Would be cool to have and NFC card by the fridge to open MFP or Lose It to track food.
Thanks Shane I have set this up with my AirTag on my house keys to start my music application which I always use when leaving home and more importantly it means I won’t leave the keys behind as I have done too many times in the past. 🙏🏽🇬🇧
Shane, once again, this is brilliant! I have a pocket-sized satchel that I often forgot at home, so I placed an AirTag in it so I can’t leave home without it. Knowing I can use this as an NFC tag (or several with your idea of location based programming) gives me at least twice the use! The only thing is, my Flic 2 Pro Kit just arrived last night! I might have been able to use the smaller box had I seen this 1 day earlier ha! Well, it’s not like I’ve ever had trouble going large on the SmartHome. Love that you keep coming up with unique content, Shane. Keep it up!
A welcome home scene that opens garage door unlocks door, and turns on a pathway would be nice, but I worry a little about creating something that makes my home easier to break into
Here’s an idea for an AirTag that is connected to your AirPods case. Use the “Set, playback destination to” and choose the AirPods that you have this AirTag with. This is most useful if you have multiple iOS devices and/or multiple AirTags and your AirTags don’t always connect with the right phone or iPad.
Another great tip and use of a device. I really do enjoy as you seem to find multiple uses for all of your devices. Thank you for helping us get the best value with the products you share.
.Maybe for emergencies that doesn't allow you to press buttons on your phone, or you do not want to alert others that you sense danger like in a potential stalking situation at night. Tap the tag and it will send messages to a few contacts with your location.
Shane you can disable the shortcuts notifications Settings>Screen Time>See All Activity if you scroll to the bottom, tap Shortcuts, then uncheck Allow Notifications. The only thing is every time the phone is restarted, and usually each morning, you have to manually uncheck it again. The other annoyance is the Shortcuts option isn’t always tappable, so you sometimes have to go back a day or so then back to today a few times until you get the arrow indicating it can be tapped. Hope this helps.
I always get god ideas from your video, and then there are videos like this one. I truly will be using this idea. I never knew this was possible. I bought a new Ford F150. There is a HOOBs addition to where I can ask Siri to start my truck. I can now use my truck AirTag and start my truck by scanning the Truck AirTag.
This is brilliant!! Thanks for sharing!! One quick question though I find nfc tags and even AirTags respond super slow, (have to hold it there re tap a few times) not as fast as your demonstrate in the video. Is there something I’m missing? I’m on the latest iOS with 14PM so don’t think it’s my hardware. Would love your thoughts on this, thanks in advance!
Shane, iOS 16 now has the option to disable the notification. On the automation, once you disable "Ask before running" you can also disable "Notify When Run"
Hi Shane, North Carolina native here! I have two quick questions about this amazing approach. 1.) Can you use the Apple Watch to trigger the NFC on the AirTag, or does this only work with the iPhone up to the AirTag? 2.) Can you think of any security worries if you were to say, put an AirTag at your front door on the outside and when you arrive home, hold your phone up to it to unlock your door. Kind of like a poor man's Apple HomeKey, lol. Could this be hacked or used by another phone, or is it strictly locked to the device you set it up with (ie your phone)? Thank you!!
Can’t comment on #1, but you can absolutely use an NFC tag outside to trigger an automation like that. It would be cheaper and more durable to use a weatherproof NFC tag instead of an AirTag since NFC tags don’t need a battery and are weatherproof (unlike AirTag). You can buy them on Amazon very cheap ($1/tag). They usually come with an adhesive backing so you can affix it to something. Be aware that if you plan to put one on a metal surface you’ll need to get an NFC tag specific for metal surfaces. Regular NFC tags placed on a metal surface will often have a difficult time being read by your phone, but they sell ones with a special material inside to eliminate the interference between the NFC tag and the metal surface behind it. These may cost a few cents more per tag. Great if you want to put one on your fridge, washing machine, etc. There is no security risk when using NFC tag (either standalone tags or an AirTag) since the automation will only run when your phone detects it. When a phone reads the NFC tag (standalone or one inside an AirTag) without an automation configured on that phone, nothing will happen. It is only when you configure an automation on your phone to run once a specific NFC tag is detected that something happens (like turning on a light or unlocking a door). The downside of this is that you’ll need to setup the same automation on every phone you want to be able to unlock your door. The NFC tag simply serves as the trigger for your automation to run on a given phone/device. Hope that makes sense!
Hey Blake! I spent a number of years living (off and on) in North Carolina in my youth! 1. Unfortunately we cannot use the Apple Watch to trigger NFC automations. Wish we could and I keep hoping Apple will allow it. Seems like the tech is there since the watch does use NFC for things like HomeKey and ApplePay. Maybe one day... 2. I second Mike's comment. He nailed it. To add to that, as a bonus tip.... if you DO want to setup an NFC automation on multiple phones, you can first create a regular shortcut instead of the automation. You cannot share automations, but you CAN share shortcuts. This way, you can just share the shortcut, to your spouse for example, without having to recreate the whole thing. Now for NFC, just create a new NFC automation that, when tapped, runs the shortcut ('run shortcut' action). Now you only need to setup the NFC automation, with one step (run shortcut) on each phone.
If you go to screen time, and notifications, I think you can disable the notifications from there. Had to do that when I pranked my friends to send their phone into an infinite loop between two apps. Pretty fun.
I have a HomeKit compatible deadbolt lock. Yale to be specific. Anyway to make it that you have an air tag on your key ring and use the tag and tap the HomeKit door lock and open it that way?
I believe you can turn off system notifications in the display screen usage section. You have to pick most recent notifications and then disable. Screen time/ notifications section.
Love this vid and idea, glad I found your channel! So I started building a HomeKit set up about 2 years ago, and at the time (coming from nest) the camera options were not good IMO. I still use HomeKit for automation but have a separate camera app, which I don’t love. Have you found any good cameras, particularly do you think there ever allow continuous recording?
Great video! Honestly I haven't even thought of using automation, but after watching this and seeing how easy it is and some of the really useful but also very simple automations one can use everyday I am definitely going to give this a go! Have a new 4 pack still in the package unused!
Hey Shane - I have learned so much from your channel. I had no idea about the AirTags. I set up some cool automations. I love adding HomeKit devices in my house. It’s so much fun. Thanks again! Appreciate your channel.
Settings > Screen time > See all activity. Scroll all the way down to notifications (you may have to tap “show more” to find shortcuts). Beside “shortcuts” you’ll want an arrow pointing to the right. If you don’t have an arrow, you may have to go back a day or two (tap the back arrow at the top left of your screen). Once you have an arrow pointing to the right of shortcuts, tap that and voila! You can customize or completely turn shortcut notifications off. Just note that you may need to repeat this a few times a month because for some reason, it always reverts back on (especially if you restart your phone)
Thanks for the suggestion. This is for shortcuts though, right? I don't know if that will change the "website NFC tag" notification from popping up when tapping the AirTag.
A way to disable the banner and force it to automate is to pair it to a light automation to be the trigger to automate the true intention; you cannot automate entry accessories due to apple knowing that it can be high risk of leaving your house open accidentally; so you would need to have a pseudo command to bypass the first aspect of hard locking entry based commands
Thank you for this realy nice tip. Just subscribe to your channel. Just found it. I am a realy great Apple fan. And these tips are realy very welcome! ❤❤❤❤
Hello, greetings from the Dominican Republic, I like the content of your channel, it is very useful. I want to know if I can use the AirTag with the HomeKey. I mean, just touch the AirTag to any lock that has a HomeKey. Thank you
I have a medicine cabinet with a Aqara contact sensor to tell when the door is open/closed. Do you know how I can make a automation that will notify me if I didn’t open the cabinet that day. Say run it automatically at 1p everyday. This will be used to remind me to take my medication. Thanks for your hard work!

This was cool! I have AirTags tans just got gifted 4 more from work 😁. So the nfc stuff is completely separate from the security features of the AirTag? I mean it doesn’t matter what iCloud account the AirTag is bound to?
I cool thing you can do without spending the money on an AirTag is that you can use RFID/NFC hotel keys to do the same thing. Just put a previously used hotel key into a couch cushion or near your door.
Would this be something that can be done with the airtags (NFC)? Or would I have to work up something different in shortcuts to make this happen Besides just using the motion sensor for the gate? NFC Tag automation NAME-Gate Alarm If dog AirTag triggers the hue outdoor motion sensor Sends signal (app) to living room To Hue play lights over tv So the lights flash or roll until I manually turn them off Or is there some kind of automation or shortcut that can be used for this scenario? Thank you! I really enjoy your channel and learning all the tech for home you share.
Hey, thanks for the support. Unfortunately you cannot use AirTags to trigger homekit automations based on location. The only similar thing you'd be able to do is just using standard motion as the automation trigger.
@@ShaneCreates Thanks Shane! I guess I was trying to complicate things and find another use for the airtags. Thanks for the brilliant idea! Do you know if this still works with iOS16? Because if I click on scan for NFC tags, my IPhone 11 with iOS16 does not find my AirTag. Thank you for your answer!
Afternoon, I’m interested to have my tag activate my Apple TV and change to my profile. Do you have instructions somewhere I can follow? Thanks for the great ideas 💡 🎉
Thanks for watching Emelia. I didn't post specific instructions for this but you can follow the steps shown in this video and just use the "Switch User Account" action (one of the Apple TV Remote shortcut actions)
Love these ideas Shane, my kiddos always switch up the profiles on the Apple TV so this is for sure one that I will try out! 🤯 Creative and useful content, as always!
The key ring Airtag is tricky because there could a chance of being triggered by accident whenever you place the phone and the keys in the same place. Your pockets, your drop zone, your nightstand, etc.

Hi Shane, North Carolina native here! I have two quick questions about this amazing approach.

Lol I have multiple scenarios and shortcuts utilizing the motion sensors already-just another thing to try!! I have 2 Scotties so when they set off the sensor it turns the interior lights blue or pink depending on who set off the lights!😬 Looking for fun ways to use their airtags!! Thank you so much for the reply.
Thanks, Shane it's a cool idea 😁 I have 8 airtag not used and more than 4 on my apple tv remote control So now I need to think about what automation I will create 🤩
Thanks for watching. Can't wait to hear what you come up with!
LOVE IT!!!! Thanks for this!!!
Thanks for the brilliant idea! Do you know if this still works with iOS16? Because if I click on scan for NFC tags, my IPhone 11 with iOS16 does not find my AirTag. Thank you for your answer!
This is crazy!! Didn’t know you could do this. Another great video bro. 🔥🔥
Thanks bro, appreciate it!!
Afternoon,
I’m interested to have my tag activate my Apple TV and change to my profile.
I thought this too... not sure if i would use a key ring one maybe id use one in the car, or just simply a hey siri Im home shortcut
What strap is in your apple watch?

Interesting. Can you use it to pull up the grocery app on an Apple Watch?
