This is the best video you've made so far. And I've watched almost all of them. It is clear and well explained. I hope you'll do more videos on how to create automation....maybe in one of two apps you didn't use in this video. Thank you for your hard work.
What a great video! Well organized. Chapters. Awesome. And thank you so very much for no anxiety-inducing background repetitive music! I really really appreciate that!!! Thanks Shane! The best video I’ve seen in a long time for home automation! 😊
I would love to see how you setup more automations using the Home+ and also how you manage to pair them with with devices taht are not currently supported by Homekit
Dear Shane, I have been tearing my non existing hair for a week now trying to implement multiple conditions (OR) in native HomeKit/Shortcut environment. Thanks to you showing Home+ it was easily implemented. Now, at least one of five windows has to be detected open in order to execute an alarm triggered by my rain detector on the balcony. Warm nights here in Stockholm, sleeping with open windows, is now a breeze. 🙂
One thing I do to get around new scenes being created by a third-party app when creating automations is to create the automation in Apple's Home app first with just one trigger and all end states. Then I add more triggers and conditions through a third-party app. One downside to doing this is that it locks all modifications of the automation end states to the Apple Home app only, which means scrolling through dozens of automations in that app to find the one I want to modify. Since Apple now allows them to be named, this at least makes them easier to find. Overall, I find this set of tradeoffs the easiest way to create and organize automations.
Sounds great Shane, that was a great video. Very informative . Going to check these apps out and expand our family’s house abilities and automation 😃👍🏻
I just recently used the Controller app to consolidate the 3 different triggers I had for my kitchen lights to come on (2 different motion sensors and a door sensor). Doing so means that the lights no longer time out on me just because only the in-room sensor knows I'm there but a different automation is that one that triggered the light.
Your recommendation of Aqara hardware has caused me to take a second look at Home kit. I have been using Alexa for over 2 years, but would prefer using Apple. Thanks for simplifying the process. Really enjoy your videos.
Thanks Jim! I keep all of my content on RUclips focussed on HomeKit and smart home stuff, so I probably won't do a dedicated video on the security suite. Although, the suite is something that I do use and recommend, as is with every sponsor I work with. I'd be happy to answer any specific questions if you have any. Thanks for watching!
Shane, great video. I’ve mostly utilized Alexa/SmartThings in the past, reduced mostly to Alexa over the years. However my family is all App,e for all other parts of our lives. I loved the options your showing off here I’ve been reluctant to switch to HomeKit because it always seemed as if it was more limiting than Alexa, not only for devices but also integrations like the ones you gave examples for. Do you have videos or could you make one that details for an Amazon centric automation setup can move to HomeKit, hopefully in an easier way vs cold turkey and having to buy “all” new devices. Love the channel and the videos thx.
Thanks Marty. Unfortunately you'll have to redo all your automations if you move over to homekit. If you are trying to avoid buying all new devices with homekit support, you can look into HOOBS or Homebridge for integrating devices (such as ring, nest, etc) that don't have native HomeKit support. That way you can continue to use the devices you already have. I've done a few videos on each.
I love your videos! But i’m looking for a basic sunrise automation when my alarm will run at a given time… crazy that in 2023 it seems we can’t export the hue automations to homekit 😢
Perhaps it could be noted that the native home app actually does support conditions by converting an automation to a (hidden) shortcut. By doing so, you can use the Shortcuts interface to add multiple conditions and actions to an automation. It still allows only one trigger, but the executed action is more advanced, natively. The "convert to shortcut" option can be found at the bottom of the screen where you select the involved devices. @Shane, great job with the channel, good vibes. In the meanwhile I'm continuing Aqara-ing my home :D
I get those same weird scene titles with all the random #s and letters but in the home app it still let me delete that string and rename them to something recognizable without affecting the function of the automation. So you don’t need to leave them with those crazy titles. Just FYI if you didn’t know.
Hi Shane great compliment to your videos, love them they are the best HomeKit videos on the web. ❤ may I ask a question? Do you know way to trigger automations by a camera events if the cam detects just a person running through the garden during the night, to turn on lights and the Alarmsirene. To do it by camera events and not by motion sensors? Maybe with shortcuts?
This can be done in the home app by converting an automation to a shortcut. Shortcuts can be pretty dense but can do pretty much whatever you want, even run code and call out for network requests.
I agree. Shortcuts can be incredible. The one thing mentioned that you still can't do though in the Home app alone is create an automation with multiple triggers.

Have you ever had an issue when creating an automation that after clicking done, you just have an infinite loading wheel? And the automation is never created.
Great video, and I have downloaded two of the 3rd party home apps you mentioned. I just have a question for you. If you make an automation on an iPad and then take this out of the house leaving your home hub to run things (in my case a HomePod mini) will it still work? If the 3rd party app does something that the native home app doesn’t , will the HomePod still follow this routine? Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas 😎
Hey Jeremy and Merry Christmas to you! So yea, the automations still run on your HomeKit hub just as any automation created in the native Home app. As I mentioned, these app still use the HomeKit framework. It's all being done in Homekit, these apps just give you more access to that framework than the home app.

@ Shane Whatley You can get around the automatically created scenes by first starting to create the automation in the home app, then open it in the 3rd party apps and modifying it. I find it annoying and cluttery to have the auto generated scenes showing up in the home app
Yes, that true, and I agree. You could even create the scene first in the 3rd party app as well. It only happens when you create a new automation that doesn't use an existing scene. I just wanted to point it out because it can be a little confusing if you've never seen it before.
Hey Charles. I recommend any decent mesh wifi 6 system by a reputable brand. I've been using Linksys Velop for a while and have been happy with it. Others that come highly recommended by people: Eero, Netgear Orbi, UniFi, just to name a few. Any of these should be good for a smart home setup. Only a few models (some of the Linksys Velop models and the Eero models) support HomeKit Secure Networking, which is another feature completely. But that's not necessary to run a smart home. Just another feature, if it's something you are interested in.
I’m wondering… if you’re using third party apps, will the automations be run from the HomePod itself or does your iPhone need to be “present” in your home in order to be able to run those supercharged automations?
It's a good question and I should have clarified. The iPhone does not need to be present or even on. The automations run on your HomeKit hubs just as automations that are made with the native Home app. In fact, you can even see the automations in the Home app, once you create them with the 3rd party apps.

10:46 Hi Shane, hope you´re doing well! I was just wondering, can't you just remove the Scene from Favourites? That way the Scene is there but It's not shown in the Scenes section. Thank you!
Yes you can remove a scene from favorites and hide it in the favorites tab, but all scenes will still show up in the room view in the Home app. The Home+ app actually separates these types of scenes from your other scenes and you can choose to hide them in that app. Not a huge deal either way, just something to be aware of.
Created a motion detection automation "under the condtion" if the switch is on it will send notification That doesnt work. Tried to remove the under condition and it works fine. any idea?
Have you ever had apple automations lose scenes or accessories?? I have automations I created and are running but when I go back to edit them it says there are no scenes or accessories for it, and it doesn’t show the if/or/wait steps anymore, when it clearly is running the automation. It just shows the initial trigger… aggravating…
No need to leave a device home running the app. You are still creating HomeKit automations, even with the 3rd party apps, so they run just like automations created in the native Home app.
Hi Shane, I’m about to start a RUclips Channel, I was looking for a video that you gives some tips about lighting your walls with some RGB LEDs to make this gradient effect with the colors… I don’t know if I saw this video in your channel or in other RUclipsr’s channel. If you have the link to this video, help me finding it 👍🏼 thank you. awesome video btw
Maybe the conditional stuff, but it would be a little more complicated so setup. Don't think you can do a shortcut automation with multiple triggers tho like you can do with these apps.
I have troubles with connections in HomeKit many of my devices (Aqara sensors, eve thermostats, yeelight light strips, Xiaomi sensors and custom flashed sockets) are not responding. Using all devices around a year and sometimes is better or worse. Most annoying are eve thermostats on radiators, one or more from five not responding when running scene, not showing actual temperature (then I’m going to eve app and trying to refresh them). Not so happy how it work (or doesn’t). Can someone confirm are these problems are not only in my case?
My HomeKit setup, with many devices, is stable for the most part. Some products are better than others. But if you are having issues with all products, it seems like it may be something else. Perhaps it's your wifi? For the Eve Thermos are you using the older bluetooth versions or the newer thread versions (4th gen)? Bluetooth can be problematic in other ways, often slow to respond, etc.
@@ShaneCreates Only one Eve got thread, but I don’t have HomePod yet. Wi-Fi got range in whole house and got two Apple TV’s as bridges in different rooms. Wife Is annoyed that everyday she had problems with different device (can’t turn on or off light, thermo not responding) bought HomeKit compatible devices because thought that they will be stable as rock 😅

Created a motion detection automation "under the condtion" if the switch is on it will send notification
That doesnt work. Tried to remove the under condition and it works fine.
any idea?
What do you mean send a notification? How are you sending the notificaion?
If you create automation initially in Home app and then modify Triggers and/or Conditions in Home+5 should not create scene in Home app
Another great video!
Thanks for watching Peter!
do you need an apple homepod or can this all be done on your phone?
Automations need a HomeKit hub to run, like a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K

Great video Shane! I’d definitely like you to go more in depth
Thanks Michael!
@@ShaneCreates not a problem, keep it up!
I am trying to automate a sensor to activate light with Siri saying good morning when the light turns on. Any help would be appreciated
It's not very straightforward, but it is possible. Check out this video to see how I did something similar: ruclips.net/video/b2lhGIwrGDg/видео.html
@@ShaneCreates Thank you Shane. Great channel.
I haven't experienced this. Are you setting up these automations in a third party homekit app?
Do you need to leave a device home running the home + app or will automations run when the device with the app on it is away?
No need to leave a device home running the app. You are still creating HomeKit automations, even with the 3rd party apps, so they run just like automations created in the native Home app.
Hi Shane, I’m about to start a RUclips Channel, I was looking for a video that you gives some tips about lighting your walls with some RGB LEDs to make this gradient effect with the colors… I don’t know if I saw this video in your channel or in other RUclipsr’s channel. If you have the link to this video, help me finding it 👍🏼 thank you. awesome video btw
Hey Sergio. I haven't made a video on that specifically. I'm just using two LED spotlights pointed at the wall for my background lighting.
Cant you do all those things in homekit automations in shortcuts?
Maybe the conditional stuff, but it would be a little more complicated so setup. Don't think you can do a shortcut automation with multiple triggers tho like you can do with these apps.
@@ShaneCreates well im switching intensity of light strip this way with one button just stack if functions, not easy but not so hard
What kind of tattoo do you have on your right arm?
Koi fish, water, cherry blossoms
@@ShaneCreates get a homekit tat!
Wife
Is annoyed that everyday she had problems with different device (can’t turn on or off light, thermo not responding) bought HomeKit compatible devices because thought that they will be stable as rock 😅
Where did you buy that shirt LOL
Where do i get one tshirt like that?!?!? ?!?,?

@@ShaneCreates great, thanks for clearing that up.
They suck, like having to confirm an automation for garage door openers…
I like your videos and I find them informative, but you seem to give off an anti-mask anti-VAX , tRUMPTERD vibe. Which seems really odd for a tech tuber.
🤔 you got all that from a home automation video...?
